The safest way to move data to a new Motorola phone is to use the copy-data step built into its initial Android setup. Turn on the new phone, keep the old phone available, and follow the transfer instructions shown on screen. Motorola says this process can copy many common items from an Android phone, but it is not a complete clone: downloads, sideloaded apps, non-Google accounts, some non-Google contacts and calendars, and ringtones are specifically excluded.

If the source is an iPhone, Motorola documents a separate iPhone-and-iCloud route that uses Google Drive. If you skipped migration, Motorola’s guide says you can reopen it from Android Setup > Continue Setup Wizard, provided both phones are on, charged, and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

What to do before turning on the new Motorola

A few preparations prevent the most common transfer failures and make it easier to find anything that did not move.

  • Keep both phones powered on. Charge them before starting and leave them connected to power if the setup warns that the process may take time.
  • Keep the old phone unlocked and nearby. The new phone’s setup screens determine which connection method is available; do not disconnect the old phone until the copy has finished.
  • Connect both phones to the same Wi-Fi network. Motorola’s recovery instructions specifically call for this when continuing a transfer after setup.
  • Know which source you are using. Android-to-Motorola and iPhone/iCloud transfers are different workflows. Choose the instructions that match the phone holding your data.
  • Make a short list of irreplaceable items. Check important photos, contacts, messages, documents, authenticator data, and files after setup instead of assuming that a completed wizard means every item moved.
  • Do not erase or trade in the old phone yet. Keep it available until you have verified the new phone and recovered anything that requires a separate sign-in or export.

Motorola’s new-phone setup tutorial and its copy-data guidance are the authoritative references for the labels and prompts shown on a particular model. Menus can differ by model, Android version, language, and region, so use the wording on your phone when it differs from the examples below.

Transfer data during initial setup

Motorola’s user guide describes the migration point this way: “During phone set up, you were asked if you wanted to copy data from your old phone to your new phone.” When that offer appears, choose the copy-data option and follow every instruction displayed on the new Motorola. The setup wizard, rather than a separate migration app, controls the initial transfer.

Android phone to new Motorola

  1. Turn on the new Motorola and begin its setup.
  2. When setup offers to copy data from an old phone, choose that option.
  3. On the old Android phone, approve the connection or instructions shown by the new phone.
  4. Follow the displayed prompts for the available connection method. Do not assume a cable is required; the model and setup path determine what is offered.
  5. Review the categories selected for copying, start the transfer, and leave both phones alone until the wizard reports that it is complete.
  6. Finish the remaining setup screens, then verify important information on the new phone before resetting the old one.

Motorola says the Android copy process can include the following categories:

Category What Motorola says can copy Qualification
Applications Apps and app data Coverage is not universal; apps outside the supported store path are listed as an exclusion.
Media Music, photos, and videos Check the new phone for the specific albums and files you need.
Accounts Google accounts Other account types are listed among the exclusions.
Contacts Contacts stored on the phone or SIM Contacts belonging to other services may require their own sign-in or export.
Messages Text messages and multimedia attachments Verify important conversations after the copy.
Settings and appearance Most phone settings and wallpaper “Most” does not mean every setting or customization.
Calling history Call history Confirm the history you need is present on the new device.

Motorola explicitly lists several things the Android route does not promise to copy:

Motorola Moto G 2025, 128GB + 4GB RAM, Forest Gray - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.
  • Downloads, including PDFs.
  • Apps that were not installed through the supported Play Store path.
  • Accounts other than Google accounts.
  • Contacts and calendars belonging to services other than Google; Motorola gives WhatsApp as an example of a service that needs separate handling.
  • Ringtones.

Those exclusions are why “transfer everything” should be understood as “copy the supported categories,” not as a byte-for-byte clone of the old phone. Open the relevant app or account on the new Motorola and complete its own sign-in, restore, export, or download process where necessary.

iPhone or iCloud to new Motorola

Motorola describes iPhone migration separately from Android-to-Android copying. Its route for an iPhone and iCloud source uses Google Drive to copy files to the new phone and to a Google account. It does not establish that every iPhone app, app state, setting, message, or service will move.

  1. Start the new Motorola’s setup and choose the transfer or copy-data option when it appears.
  2. Select the iPhone or iCloud pathway if that is the source shown by the setup screen.
  3. On the iPhone, follow the instructions to use Google Drive and the requested Google account. Install or open Google Drive only when the setup instructions direct you to do so.
  4. Allow the requested access to the files or information you intend to copy, and wait for the upload or preparation step to finish.
  5. Return to the Motorola setup screen and continue with the displayed import instructions.
  6. After setup, sign in to services that do not use Google accounts and check your photos, contacts, calendars, messages, and documents individually.

The exact screens, available categories, and app equivalents depend on the iPhone, the Motorola model, and the services holding your data. Treat the iPhone route as a supported file-and-account migration path, not a guarantee that an iOS installation becomes an identical Android installation.

If you skipped the transfer during setup

You may be able to resume the setup wizard instead of wiping the new phone. Motorola’s user guide gives this recovery path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make sure both phones are fully charged and turned on.
  2. Connect both phones to the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. On the new Motorola, swipe down from the home screen to open the notification panel.
  4. Tap Android Setup.
  5. Tap Continue Setup Wizard.
  6. Follow the transfer steps shown on the phone.

The documented label is Continue Setup Wizard. If you do not see an Android Setup notification, first confirm that the new phone has completed enough setup to reach the home screen, that both devices are powered on, and that they share Wi-Fi. Then use the model-specific instructions in Motorola’s user guide. Do not substitute Smart Connect for this recovery path: Motorola presents Smart Connect as a tool for pairing devices and sharing files, not as the initial phone-migration wizard.

Do you need a cable?

No universal cable requirement is established for every Motorola model or transfer route. The setup wizard determines whether it offers a wireless connection, a cable connection, or another method. If it asks for a cable, use one that supports data and has connectors compatible with both phones; a cable that only supplies power cannot carry the transfer.

A connected cable can still appear not to work because USB connections have modes. Motorola’s USB documentation says a supported device can default to No data transfer, with separate choices for file transfer and other tasks. See the Motorola USB preferences guide for the behavior on the relevant device.

  • Use the cable and adapters requested by the setup screen, not a random charging lead.
  • Unlock the phone if the USB notification or permission prompt requires it.
  • If the connection is visible but no files or transfer option appears, inspect the USB notification and choose the data-transfer mode only when the phone and setup instructions call for it.
  • Try the other compatible port or adapter if the phones disconnect repeatedly.
  • Do not conclude that the phone is defective until you have checked cable data support, connector compatibility, USB mode, battery level, and the on-screen transfer method.

What to verify after the copy finishes

The completion screen confirms that the wizard reached its endpoint; it does not prove that every account or file was included. Use this verification sequence before retiring the old phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Contacts: Open the contacts app, search for several known people, and check whether contacts stored on the phone or SIM are present. Sign in to any separate contact service that was not part of the Google transfer.
  2. Messages: Open recent conversations and inspect a thread containing an image or other attachment. Motorola lists text messages and multimedia attachments as supported Android categories, but verification catches an interrupted or partial copy.
  3. Photos and videos: Check recent media, older albums, and any folders that matter to you. If a file was only a download, do not assume it was included.
  4. Apps: Open the applications you use most. A copied app may still require its account sign-in, and an app installed outside the supported store path may need to be obtained from its original source.
  5. Google account: Confirm that the expected Google account is signed in and that its synchronized data is available.
  6. Settings and appearance: Check essential network, display, notification, and wallpaper choices. Motorola says most settings and wallpaper can copy, not every setting.
  7. Call history: Review recent calls if that record is important.
  8. Documents and downloads: Look for PDFs and other downloaded files separately. Motorola lists downloads as an exclusion from the Android copy process.
  9. Special services: Open calendars, messaging services, password managers, work profiles, and authenticators that use accounts other than Google. Complete each service’s own recovery process.
  10. Ringtones: Re-select or restore custom tones if you used them on the old phone.

Common problems and the safest fixes

The copy option never appeared

Restart the process from the new phone’s setup prompts if you are still in the wizard. If setup has already finished, use the documented Android Setup > Continue Setup Wizard path from the home screen. Keep both phones on, charged, and on the same Wi-Fi network while you try again. If the notification is unavailable, consult the guide for the exact Motorola model rather than guessing at a different menu.

The transfer stopped partway through

Keep both phones connected to power, bring them close together, and confirm that the Wi-Fi connection has not changed. Re-enter the setup wizard and follow the method it offers. Before retrying, note which categories are already present so you can focus your verification on missing items rather than deleting data unnecessarily.

A cable is connected but nothing copies

Check that the cable is data-capable, fits both ports, and is supported by the transfer method displayed on the Motorola. Then inspect the USB connection mode; Motorola documents No data transfer as a possible default. Select a file-transfer mode only if the prompt requires it. If the setup wizard expects a wireless process, a cable may not be relevant to that path.

Some apps or accounts are missing

Compare the missing item with Motorola’s stated exclusions. Apps installed outside the supported Play Store route, non-Google accounts, and data owned by other services require separate recovery. Sign in through the service’s own app or website, or use that service’s documented export and restore process. Do not keep repeating the phone-to-phone copy expecting an excluded account to appear.

The source is an iPhone and the result is incomplete

Use Motorola’s iPhone/iCloud workflow through Google Drive rather than the Android-to-Android assumptions. Review the iPhone’s files and accounts individually after setup. The documented route does not promise that every iOS app or item has an Android equivalent or will be imported automatically.

Smart Connect is not the same as initial migration

Motorola’s Smart Connect information describes installing the app, pairing devices, and sharing files. That is useful for ongoing connectivity or selected file exchange, but the material does not present Smart Connect as the initial setup wizard for moving a phone’s supported data categories. Start with the new Motorola’s built-in setup transfer; use Smart Connect only for a separate task that its instructions explicitly support.

Android versus iPhone transfer at a glance

Source phone Primary Motorola path What is established What to treat cautiously
Android Copy-data step in the new phone’s setup Apps and app data, music, photos, videos, Google accounts, phone or SIM contacts, text messages with multimedia attachments, most settings, wallpaper, and call history may copy. Downloads, PDFs, non-Play Store apps, non-Google accounts, non-Google contacts and calendars, and ringtones are listed as exclusions.
iPhone or iCloud Separate setup route using Google Drive and a Google account Motorola documents copying files to the new phone and Google account through the transfer instructions. No promise is made that every iPhone app, iOS setting, message, or service will move.

A practical handover checklist

  • Both phones are charged, powered on, and available.
  • The source platform—Android or iPhone/iCloud—matches the pathway selected in setup.
  • Both phones use the same Wi-Fi network when continuing a skipped transfer.
  • The new Motorola’s setup wizard has completed the copy step without interruption.
  • Contacts, messages, attachments, photos, videos, apps, Google account data, settings, wallpaper, and call history have been checked where relevant.
  • Downloads, PDFs, sideloaded apps, non-Google accounts, non-Google contacts and calendars, service-specific data, and ringtones have been handled separately when needed.
  • Any requested cable is data-capable, physically compatible, and using the USB mode required by the setup screen.
  • The old phone has not been erased until the new phone passes your personal checks.

The reliable decision is simple: begin with Motorola’s built-in setup transfer, choose the route matching the source phone, and verify the exclusions deliberately. If you skipped the wizard, reopen Android Setup > Continue Setup Wizard under the conditions Motorola specifies. Use a cable only when the actual setup path calls for a compatible data connection, and use separate account or service recovery for anything outside Motorola’s supported copy categories.
