Yes, a survivor can move between two ARK servers that are not part of an official-style cluster, but the method depends on what “unclustered” means in your setup. For a reliable, persistent multi-server network, configure both servers with the same -clusterid and a shared -ClusterDirOverride directory. If the servers must remain without a cluster ID, use ARK’s terminal upload/download system only when transfer filtering and prevention settings allow it; sharing the SavedArks directory can create a “fake cluster” that exposes those buttons.
The important distinction is that a matching cluster ID by itself is not enough. Servers may appear to recognize one another while still being unable to exchange uploaded survivors, items, or tames if they use different cluster directories.

Choose the transfer method before changing anything
ARK supports two practical workflows. The first is live cross-server travel, where a player chooses Travel to another server from a terminal and selects a destination. The second is manual upload/download, where the survivor is uploaded at a terminal, the player joins another server, and then selects Download Survivor at the character screen.
Use the following decision guide:

“Unclustered” is often used for two different configurations. Some administrators mean “not using an automatically managed cluster,” while still being willing to set the two command-line options that make a private cluster. Others mean that no -clusterid is configured at all. Confirm which case applies before troubleshooting a missing button.

Configure a persistent multi-server setup
For a long-term setup, the ARK Official Community Wiki’s launch pattern uses the same cluster name and the same shared directory on every server. The map name and session name can differ.
Example launch commands

Keep the spelling, capitalization, and path consistent. The map can be The Island on one server and Scorched Earth on the other; the cluster options are what establish the relationship.
Why both options are required
The -clusterid value tells ARK which servers are allowed to see one another for Cross-ARK travel. The -ClusterDirOverride value identifies where tribute data and related transfer files are stored. If the IDs match but the directories differ, the servers can appear in a travel list without sharing the uploaded data. A player can then be offered a destination that cannot actually provide the survivor download.
Shared storage on separate machines
When both servers run on one host, the same local directory can be supplied to both launch commands. When they run on separate hosts, the path must resolve to shared storage that both machines can access. A path that exists only on server A is not shared merely because it has the same text on server B. Verify that both game-server accounts have permission to create and modify files there.
Keep the cluster identifier private and unique
Do not use a generic value such as a map name or a word that many administrators may choose. Unrelated servers using the same ID can pollute the server list and create confusing or unsafe transfer targets. Generate an identifier specific to your server network and document it for administrators.

Keep servers unclustered and use upload/download
ARK’s configuration documentation describes a second arrangement for servers that have no cluster ID. Upload/download can remain possible when transfer filtering is not disabled and the relevant prevention settings are not blocking the operation. The same documentation describes sharing the SavedArks directory as a “fake cluster”: terminals can then expose upload and download buttons even though the servers are not configured with a conventional cluster ID.

- No setting should disable the survivor upload or download operation you intend to use.
- Filtering must remain compatible with transfer behavior; do not enable
-NoTransferFromFilteringif your design relies on filtering-based upload/download controls. - The servers must be able to access the same transfer data. For the fake-cluster approach, that means a shared
SavedArkslocation rather than two unrelated local folders. - Any item and dinosaur transfer restrictions must be reviewed separately from survivor transfer. A survivor may be transferable while an item or tame is rejected.
Because host panels expose these options under different names, check the actual generated command line and configuration files rather than relying only on a panel toggle. The effective launch arguments determine what ARK can display in-game.
Upload and download a survivor
The terminal flow is available at an obelisk, a supply crate, a terminal, or a Tek Transmitter. The exact labels can vary with the map and game mode, but the sequence is the same.
Before uploading
- Confirm with the administrator whether inventory items are allowed to move. If the policy is unknown, remove the survivor’s inventory before opening the transfer screen. This avoids losing items that the destination refuses to accept.
- Move to an obelisk, supply crate, terminal, or Tek Transmitter and open its Cross-ARK transfer interface.
- Check that you are uploading the intended survivor and that no server restart or maintenance is underway.
Upload on the source server
- Choose the option to upload the survivor. In a travel-enabled cluster this may be presented as Travel to another server; in upload/download mode it is the survivor-upload control.
- Complete the confirmation prompt. Treat the survivor as stored in transfer data, not as an active character on the source map.
- Leave the source server without creating a replacement character. Creating a new survivor can make it unclear which character is being managed and can lead to accidental overwrites later.
Download on the destination server
- Join the destination server after the upload has completed.
- At the character-selection screen, choose Download Survivor when using upload/download mode.
- If the servers are configured for live Cross-ARK travel, select Travel to another server and choose the destination from the available list instead.
- Spawn into the destination and verify the survivor’s level, engrams, appearance, and location before transferring additional items or tames.
Only one survivor can be uploaded at a time. Finish the current transfer and confirm its result before another player begins a migration.
Protect the destination survivor and save data
Downloading a survivor overwrites that player’s existing survivor data on the destination. This is not a merge operation: the destination character is not combined with the uploaded character’s levels, engrams, or appearance. If the destination already contains a valuable survivor, stop and decide which character should remain before downloading.

Backups to take
- Back up each server’s save files immediately before the first transfer.
- Back up the shared cluster directory, including the transfer data that ARK writes there.
- Keep a dated copy outside the live game-server directory so a failed transfer or mistaken overwrite can be rolled back.
For a hosted server, use the provider’s snapshot or download facility if it offers one, and verify that the backup can actually be restored. A backup that was never tested is not a reliable recovery plan.
Administrator configuration checklist
Work through these checks in order before asking a player to attempt a transfer:
- Identify the intended model. Decide whether the servers will use matching cluster options and live travel, or remain without a cluster ID and use upload/download.
- Match the cluster ID when clustering. Both launch commands must contain the identical
-clusteridvalue. - Match the transfer directory. Both commands must point to the same shared
-ClusterDirOverridelocation. On separate machines, confirm that the storage is genuinely shared and writable. - Inspect prevention flags. Check
noTributeDownloads,PreventDownloadSurvivors, andPreventUploadSurvivors. Any enabled flag that blocks the operation will remove or disable the corresponding control. - Inspect item and dinosaur restrictions. Review the corresponding item and dino upload/download flags if players are expected to move those assets with the survivor.
- Review filtering behavior. Do not enable
-NoTransferFromFilteringwhen filtering-based transfer controls are part of the design. - Use a private identifier. Avoid a generic cluster ID that could associate unrelated servers.
- Back up before testing. Preserve both save files and cluster data before the first live migration.
- Perform a test with a disposable or low-value survivor. Confirm that the destination can see and download the character before moving valuable inventories or tames.
Fix “Download Survivor” missing or unavailable
The server has a matching ID but no download data
This usually indicates different cluster directories. Compare the complete -ClusterDirOverride paths, confirm that both servers can reach the same storage, and check write permissions. Restart the servers after correcting the launch arguments, then upload a test survivor again. A visible server list does not prove that the transfer files are shared.
A prevention setting is hiding the control
Inspect noTributeDownloads, PreventDownloadSurvivors, and PreventUploadSurvivors. Remove or change only the setting that conflicts with the intended policy, restart the affected server, and verify the generated startup command. Host control panels sometimes retain an old value in a custom launch field even after a graphical switch is changed.
Upload/download is expected on a no-ID server
Check that filtering has not been disabled in a way that removes the intended transfer behavior, and confirm that the SavedArks directory is shared if you are using the fake-cluster arrangement. Two independent SavedArks folders cannot expose the same uploaded survivor.

The player created a new character on the source
Stop before making another upload. Creating a replacement survivor can make the account’s active character and stored character difficult to distinguish. Restore the last backup if the wrong character was overwritten, then repeat the migration with a documented survivor name and a single upload attempt.
The survivor downloads but items or tames do not
Survivor transfer and item or dinosaur transfer are separate policy decisions. Check the corresponding item and dino prevention flags and any filtering rules. Emptying the survivor’s inventory before upload is the safest default when administrators have not confirmed what is permitted.

Live travel is convenient when both servers are administered as one coherent network: the player selects a destination during the transfer process and does not need to manage a separate character-screen download. It also depends on the cluster relationship being correct at the moment of travel.
Manual upload/download is useful for a no-ID or fake-cluster design and makes the migration point explicit. It requires the player to leave the source, join the destination, and select the download command. In either mode, the same storage and prevention rules determine whether the data is available.

Operational practices for a multi-server network
Document the effective configuration
Keep a short administrator record listing each server’s map, session name, cluster ID, cluster directory, filtering options, and survivor, item, and dino transfer policies. Record the date of every change. This makes a missing button diagnosable instead of turning it into trial and error.

Test after updates and migrations
After changing a host, moving storage, or altering launch arguments, perform a controlled transfer with a test survivor. Verify the source upload, destination visibility, successful spawn, and restoration of the backup. Do not infer success from the server appearing in a list.
Separate player instructions from administrator controls
Players can perform the terminal steps, but they cannot correct a mismatched shared path or a prevention flag. Publish the allowed maps, whether inventory and tames may move, and whom to contact when Download Survivor is absent. This prevents repeated uploads that administrators later have to recover.
What a hosting provider can and cannot simplify
A dedicated-server host can make it easier to run two compatible ARK instances and expose cluster settings through a control panel. It does not remove the need to verify the actual command-line values, shared-storage behavior, transfer restrictions, backup coverage, or the provider’s current terms. Before committing to a host, confirm that it supports a common cluster directory or an equivalent Cross-ARK configuration and that you can retrieve and restore save and cluster backups.
For a self-managed setup, the essential requirement remains the same: both servers must be configured to read and write the same transfer data, or the no-ID upload/download design must deliberately share the relevant SavedArks data. Without that common data location, there is no reliable path for a survivor uploaded on one server to appear on the other.
