The safest way to move most of your old phone to an Oppo Reno 17 is to use OPPO Clone Phone, then handle WhatsApp separately before registering it on the Reno 17. Clone Phone can copy common phone content over a direct Wi‑Fi connection; Android’s built-in setup transfer is a useful alternative, especially when a cable is available. WhatsApp has its own chat-transfer requirements, and an iPhone-to-Reno migration uses a USB-C-to-Lightning cable during Android setup.
Back up anything already stored on the Reno 17 before starting. OPPO warns that Clone Phone can overwrite existing apps and app data on the destination device.
Before you start: protect the Reno 17 and prepare both phones
Migration is easiest when both phones are charged, unlocked and beside one another. Keep Wi‑Fi enabled, because Clone Phone and the Android setup transfer create or use a direct wireless connection. A cable may be preferable for Android setup or required for an iPhone-to-Android WhatsApp transfer.
Back up data already on the Reno 17
If the Reno 17 has photos, messages, apps or other files that matter, copy them somewhere safe before opening Clone Phone. OPPO Support states that existing apps and app data on the new phone can be overwritten by information from the old phone. A backup is also sensible before retrying a failed transfer, because repeated attempts can create duplicate files or replace a partially configured app.

Check storage and accessories
- Check available storage in the Reno 17’s Settings app. Google’s Android setup flow can let you select less content when the destination does not have enough space.
- For Android phones with different connectors, have a compatible USB-C data cable or a cable adapter available.
- For an iPhone-to-Reno WhatsApp migration, use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. Google specifically documents this cable for the setup transfer.
- A SIM ejector tool is optional but useful if you are moving a physical SIM while setting up the Reno 17.
Keep the old phone usable until you verify the result
Do not erase, trade in or factory-reset the old phone immediately. Open the transferred photo folders, check contacts and messages, and confirm that WhatsApp chats and media are present before deleting the source data. Apps that do not support transferable backup data may need to be installed and restored individually.
Method 1: use OPPO Clone Phone for a broad Android-to-Reno migration
Clone Phone is OPPO’s general migration tool. Its app listing describes a direct Wi‑Fi transfer for contacts, messages, call history, photos, videos, audio, files, system application data, installed apps and app data without consuming mobile-data allowance. OPPO’s migration guidance also lists calendar events, notes, alarms, wallpapers and system settings for Android-to-OPPO transfers.
Step-by-step Clone Phone transfer
- Install or open Clone Phone on both devices. Use the version supplied with the Reno 17 and install the app on the old phone if it is not already present. The exact menu wording can vary slightly with the Reno 17’s regional software and ColorOS version.
- Choose the device roles. On the Reno 17, select This is the new device. On the old phone, select the option indicating that it is the old or source device.
- Identify the old phone type. Select the source platform when Clone Phone asks whether the old device is Android or iPhone. Follow the on-screen permission requests so the app can read the categories you choose.
- Pair the phones. A QR code appears on the Reno 17. Scan it with Clone Phone on the old phone. Keep the phones close together and leave Wi‑Fi enabled while the connection is established.
- Select the content categories. Review the list rather than selecting everything automatically. You can choose contacts, messages, call records, pictures, videos, audio, files, applications, app data and the other categories shown by the app. Deselect large folders if the Reno 17 does not have enough free space.
- Start the migration. Tap the start or transfer control and keep both screens awake if the app requests it. Do not disconnect either phone or switch off Wi‑Fi until Clone Phone reports completion.
- Check the result. Open Gallery or Photos, Contacts, Messages, the file manager and several transferred apps. Confirm that the number of items and the most important recent files are present before resetting the old phone.
What Clone Phone is good at
Clone Phone is the most convenient first choice when the old phone is Android and you want one guided operation for personal content and installed applications. It can move local photos and videos, call history, text messages, contacts and many system preferences without using your cellular data. It can also bring over app packages and app data when the source and destination versions are compatible.
Why an app may arrive without its data
OPPO warns that incompatible apps or app data may not migrate. Android also excludes data from apps that do not use Android backup. An app can therefore appear on the Reno 17 while its internal account, downloads or settings are missing. Reinstall that app from the appropriate store and use the app’s own backup and restore process or sign in again. Do not assume that a successful Clone Phone completion means every app has a portable data set.

Method 2: use Android setup’s “Copy apps & data” flow
Android’s built-in transfer is an alternative to Clone Phone and is especially useful during the Reno 17’s initial setup. Google supports both cable and wireless transfer. A compatible cable or adapter can be needed when the two phones use different connectors.
Transfer during first setup
- Turn on the Reno 17 and begin setup. Continue until Android displays the option to copy apps and data from an old device.
- Choose “Copy apps & data.” Select cable or wireless transfer according to the accessories you have and follow the pairing instructions on both phones.
- Approve the connection on the old phone. Unlock it and accept the prompts that allow Android to read the selected content.
- Review the selectable categories. Choose the apps, photos, videos, contacts, text messages, settings and call history you want. Google’s flow can also copy music, multimedia in text messages and wallpaper when those items are supported.
- Start copying and leave the phones connected. A cable transfer should remain physically connected; a wireless transfer requires both phones to stay near each other with Wi‑Fi enabled.
- Finish setup and inspect important apps. Open the Reno 17’s Gallery, Contacts and Messages apps, then check the apps whose data matters most.
Android setup’s documented limits
Google says the setup flow may not copy downloads, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, data belonging to apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google-account data, some synchronized contacts or calendars, ringtones and some settings. These are content limitations rather than signs that the cable or Wi‑Fi connection failed.
If the Reno 17 runs out of space, Android can let you reduce the selection and continue with a smaller transfer. Move large videos or downloads separately after setup instead of repeatedly restarting the complete migration.
Transfer WhatsApp chats separately before normal use
WhatsApp should be treated as a separate migration. Do not open and register WhatsApp on the Reno 17 ahead of the transfer when using WhatsApp’s Chat Transfer flow. The new phone must remain unregistered until the migration process reaches the point at which WhatsApp asks you to verify and connect it.

Android phone to Reno 17: WhatsApp Chat Transfer
This route is for two Android phones. WhatsApp requires Android 6 or later on both devices, the same phone number on both phones, nearby devices and Wi‑Fi enabled. Keep the old phone available until the new phone confirms that chats and media are restored.
- Prepare the account. Keep WhatsApp working on the old Android phone and confirm that the Reno 17 has enough free storage for the chat media you intend to keep.
- Install WhatsApp on the Reno 17 but do not complete an ordinary registration first. Starting the app too early and registering it before Chat Transfer can interrupt the intended sequence.
- Start the transfer from WhatsApp’s prompts. The current screens can vary by app version. WhatsApp’s documented sequence installs the app, verifies the same phone number, displays a QR code and uses the old phone to scan it.
- Scan the QR code with the old phone. Keep WhatsApp open and follow the prompts on both screens. Leave the phones close together with Wi‑Fi enabled while the history moves directly between them.
- Complete verification and setup. Wait for WhatsApp to report that the chats have been restored before leaving the app or resetting the old phone.
- Check representative conversations and media. Open older and recent chats, group conversations and several media items. WhatsApp states that the chat and media history is transferred when the prerequisites are met.
WhatsApp excludes payment messages and media received through WhatsApp Channels from this Chat Transfer. Those exclusions apply even when the rest of the chat history arrives successfully.
If you are changing your phone number
Change the number inside WhatsApp on the old phone before transferring to the Reno 17. WhatsApp cautions that registering a new number first can result in lost chat history. Complete the number-change procedure on the source phone, then use that updated account and number in the transfer sequence.

For an iPhone source, Google documents a direct transfer during Android setup using a USB-C-to-Lightning cable and a QR-code scan. This path moves WhatsApp conversations and media directly between the two phones. It is distinct from ordinary photo and contact migration, so follow the WhatsApp prompt even if Clone Phone has already copied other iPhone content.

Step-by-step iPhone WhatsApp transfer
- Keep WhatsApp on the iPhone. Do not erase the iPhone or remove its WhatsApp account before the transfer is confirmed.
- Start or restart the Reno 17’s Android setup. At the copy-data stage, connect the iPhone to the Reno 17 with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable.
- Choose the WhatsApp transfer option. Android setup displays a QR code or asks you to scan one. Use the iPhone’s camera or the instructed WhatsApp action to scan it.
- Authorize the move on the iPhone. Keep both phones connected and follow the on-screen prompts while the conversations and media are copied.
- Finish Android setup, then open WhatsApp on the Reno 17. Verify the same account information when prompted and allow WhatsApp to complete the restoration.
- Inspect the result before deleting the iPhone’s data. Confirm that essential conversations, attachments and recent media are visible.
OPPO’s cross-platform guidance lists contacts, calendar events, photos and videos as transferable from an iPhone, but it cautions that some app data cannot cross from iOS to Android. Do not expect an iOS app’s private database or every app setting to become an equivalent Android app installation.

Restore from a cloud backup when the old phone is unavailable
If the old phone is lost, damaged or already wiped, Android can restore a previous backup from your Google Account during the Reno 17’s setup. Sign in to the same account used for the backup and choose the available backup when Android offers the restore option.
What Google backup can provide
Google’s Android guidance supports restoring apps and certain app data, contacts, text messages, settings and other backed-up content. OPPO also documents Google-server backup for app data, Wi‑Fi settings and preferences. The exact result depends on what was backed up and whether an individual app supports Android backup.
WhatsApp and cloud restoration
Google states that, when WhatsApp is installed, chats and data are restored from the cloud after you sign in to the new Android device and open WhatsApp. Use the same account and phone number associated with the available backup, then allow WhatsApp to complete its own restore prompt. A cloud restore cannot recover content that was never included in the backup, and WhatsApp’s stated exclusions still apply to the relevant transfer path.

Troubleshooting a Reno 17 migration
Clone Phone cannot find or pair the phones
- Move the phones close together and keep both unlocked.
- Turn Wi‑Fi on and follow the QR-code pairing flow again.
- Close Clone Phone on both devices, reopen it and reselect the new-device and old-device roles.
- Keep both phones charged so the transfer is not interrupted by power-saving shutdown.
The transfer stops or the Reno 17 is full
Check the destination’s free storage and repeat the selection with large videos, downloads or duplicate folders removed. Android’s setup flow can let you choose a smaller set of data. For Clone Phone, restart with a narrower category selection rather than deleting the old phone’s originals.
An app transferred but opens without its old data
This is expected when the app is incompatible or does not use Android backup. Reinstall the app on the Reno 17 and use its own backup and restore mechanism or sign-in process. OPPO and Google both document that unsupported app data is not guaranteed to migrate.
WhatsApp says there is no backup or no history
- Confirm that you used the same phone number required by the transfer route.
- For Android Chat Transfer, ensure both devices run Android 6 or later, remain nearby and have Wi‑Fi enabled.
- Make sure WhatsApp was not registered on the Reno 17 before the Chat Transfer flow began.
- If the phone number changed, change it within WhatsApp on the old phone before starting the migration.
- For iPhone-to-Reno transfer, reconnect the USB-C-to-Lightning cable and repeat the Android setup QR-code step.
Photos or files are missing
Search the Reno 17’s Gallery and file manager, including folders that may not appear in the main photo timeline. Google specifically warns that hidden-folder media and downloads may not be included in Android setup transfer. Copy those items separately from the old phone or restore them from the service where they were stored.
Which method should you choose?
Use Clone Phone first when both devices are available and the source is Android: it offers the broadest single migration of phone content and installed apps. Use Android’s “Copy apps & data” flow when you are still in initial setup, have a suitable cable or want Google’s account-based restore behavior. For WhatsApp, always follow WhatsApp’s own transfer sequence rather than assuming a general phone clone handled the chats. If the source is an iPhone, use Android setup with the USB-C-to-Lightning cable for WhatsApp and treat contacts, calendar, photos, videos and app data as separate categories with different cross-platform limits.
