You can restore supported settings on a new Fire tablet, redownload Amazon purchases, and move photos and personal files through their own routes. There is no documented one-step transfer that copies every app, login, download, and file. Keep the old tablet until you have checked the new one.
What transfers—and what needs a separate step
Amazon’s Backup and Restore feature covers supported settings and some Amazon account and device information. It is distinct from photo and file storage. Amazon-purchased content saved to your account’s Cloud can generally be downloaded again, but that does not guarantee an app’s private data, sign-in state, or offline downloads will return.
Photos already uploaded to Amazon Photos can be accessed by signing into the same account. Local files, contacts, and calendars may need a separate copy or export. For apps, whether private data is backed up depends on Fire OS eligibility and the app’s configuration.

- Connect the old Fire tablet to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > Device Options > Backup & Restore and turn on Backup & Restore if it is off. The menu location or wording can vary by model and Fire OS.
- Leave the tablet idle and connected to Wi-Fi long enough for a backup cycle. Amazon says Backup and Restore runs under those conditions; seeing the setting enabled does not by itself confirm a recent backup has completed. Amazon’s Backup and Restore FAQ explains the feature and its scope.
Set up the new tablet and restore supported settings
- During setup, sign in with the same Amazon account used on the old tablet.
- If a restore option is offered, select the relevant backup. Amazon says backup data can help set up a new device, but it does not document one universal screen-by-screen flow for every Fire model.
- After setup, review the settings and account information you care about rather than assuming the new tablet is an exact copy.
Redownload apps and Amazon purchases
Open the Appstore or your library on the new tablet and download the apps you want. Check inside each app for a sign-in, sync, or restore option; app installation and app-private data are separate things.

Amazon-purchased content saved to the account Cloud can be downloaded again. Archiving an item removes it from the device, not from the Amazon account. See Amazon’s storage guidance for the distinction between archived content and device storage. Redownloading does not establish that an app’s login state, downloaded offline files, or internal data will be restored.
Why app data may not come back
Amazon’s developer documentation describes automatic app backup on Fire OS 7 and later for qualifying apps targeting API 23 or higher. Backup settings and developer configuration also matter, and Amazon states a limit of 25 MB per application per device. This is a conditional app-backup quota, not a guarantee that every app’s data will transfer. For details, see Amazon’s Fire OS 7 documentation.

Move photos and videos
If the photos are already in Amazon Photos
Sign into Amazon Photos with the same account on the new tablet to access media that was uploaded. If files remain only on the old tablet, Amazon’s instructions describe uploading them manually in the Amazon Photos app: open its profile or settings area, choose manual upload, select the files, and upload them. Labels can change between app versions. Amazon’s upload instructions cover the app workflow.

If the photos and videos are stored locally
A portable microSD card is another option when both tablets support it. Amazon says Fire tablets from the 5th Generation onward support microSD cards, but availability and setup depend on the model. Set the card up as portable storage to move files, photos, and videos between devices; Amazon describes portable storage as “Best for transferring content such as files, photos, and videos between devices.” Its help page, Tips for Using a microSD Card with Your Fire Tablet, also notes that Fire tablets support FAT32.

Portable storage does not make every app’s content transferable. Some copyrighted movies or music stored by apps may not move. Kindle books on the card are accessible on another device only when it uses the same Amazon account. Kindle and Prime Video apps support only portable storage, not internal storage set up through the tablet.
Export contacts and calendars when needed
If contacts or calendar entries are not syncing through their respective services, export them from the old tablet as files and then use the destination app’s import function. Amazon documents calendar export to an .ics file and contact export to a .vcf file; the steps differ between Fire OS 5-or-earlier and Fire OS 6-or-later. The export instructions do not establish one universal import procedure for every destination app. Follow the relevant app’s import guidance after creating the files. Choose the right route for each item

Verify the new tablet before retiring the old one
- Open essential apps and confirm you can sign in or restore their content.
- Check that the photos and videos you need are accessible on the new tablet.
- Confirm important contacts and calendar entries are present.
- Open downloaded purchases and any files moved by card or export.
Only erase, trade in, or otherwise give up the old tablet after those checks are complete. Amazon’s Backup and Restore FAQ says it intends to make backup data available for at least a year after the last device use, but that is not a substitute for confirming your own content has arrived.
