The most reliable method is to transfer data during the new tablet’s first setup. Connect both tablets to Wi‑Fi, choose Copy apps and data when the new tablet asks, pair the devices, and select what to copy. Android supports either a compatible data cable or a wireless connection; Google says both methods support the same data. If the old tablet is unavailable, restore a Google Account backup, then manually copy anything the setup process excludes. Do not erase the old tablet until you have checked apps, photos, videos, downloads, documents, contacts, and account access on the new one.
Which transfer method should you use?
Your choice depends mainly on whether the old tablet still works and whether you need individual files that Android’s setup transfer may skip.
| Method | Best when | Connection | What it covers | Timing and limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct transfer during setup | You have the old tablet, can unlock it, and are setting up the new tablet now | Compatible cable or wireless pairing | Supported apps and app data, photos, videos, contacts, messages, many settings, wallpaper, music, and call history, depending on device and Android version | Google says it can take from a few minutes to more than an hour. Downloads such as PDFs, hidden-folder media, unsupported app data, and some accounts or settings may be left behind. |
| Google Account backup restore | The old tablet is lost, damaged, unavailable, or was already backed up | Internet connection during setup | Backed-up apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS where supported; photos and videos if backed up through Google Photos | Google says the restore can take up to 24 hours to finish completely. App support varies, and restoring to an older Android version can be incomplete. |
| Manual file copying | You need downloads, documents, media folders, or other items omitted by setup | Drive, Photos, or a computer; external storage only if both models support it | Specific folders and files you select | Requires access to the old files or an existing cloud copy. It does not recreate private app data or app logins by itself. |
Most people should use direct setup transfer first, restore a backup when direct transfer is impossible, and then perform a manual pass for Downloads and other folders. None of these methods guarantees that every app’s private data will return.

The exact categories shown on your screens depend on the tablet manufacturer, Android release, and the apps installed. Google’s general Android setup guidance identifies these items as commonly copyable:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Apps installed from Google Play and supported app data
- Contacts saved on the tablet or SIM card
- Text messages, including supported multimedia content
- Photos, videos, and music stored in locations recognized by the transfer process
- Most device settings, wallpaper, and call history where the tablet supports them
Android’s setup flow may not copy the following:
- Downloaded files such as PDF documents
- Photos, videos, or music hidden in folders the transfer process does not scan
- Apps installed outside Google Play
- Data from apps that do not use Android backup
- Non-Google accounts and their locally stored data
- Contacts or calendars synchronized with services other than Google
- Ringtones and certain device settings
App data is especially unpredictable. An app can appear on the new tablet while its game saves, offline files, authentication tokens, or custom settings are absent. Open important apps, sign in again when required, and use each app’s own cloud-sync or export feature where available.
Prepare both tablets before copying
- Charge both devices. Keep them connected to power if the transfer is large. A shutdown during copying can leave the process incomplete.
- Unlock the old tablet. You need its screen PIN, pattern, or password to approve pairing and access protected files.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi. Use a stable network on the new tablet. Wireless transfer and backup restoration depend on network access.
- Confirm the Google Account. On the old tablet, identify the account used for backups and make sure you know its password and verification method.
- Check backup status. Open the tablet’s backup settings, turn backup on if appropriate, tap Back up now, and review the backup details. Photo and video backup is managed separately through Google Photos, so check its backup status as well.
- Check available storage. Compare the space used on the old tablet with the free space on the new one. If the new tablet is smaller, the setup flow may let you select categories rather than copy everything.
- Inventory irreplaceable items. Note important downloads, documents, recordings, offline media, game progress, authentication apps, work files, and accounts that may not be covered by Android backup.
- Inspect the cable option if you plan to use one. Both tablets need compatible ports, and the cable must carry data rather than only charge. Use an adapter only when the connectors on the two specific tablets differ.
Transfer directly during the new tablet’s setup
This is the fullest single-pass option when the old tablet is available. Google Android Help describes both cable and wireless transfer and states: “You can use the cable or wireless option to transfer data. Both methods support the same data.” Labels can differ by manufacturer and Android version, so follow the wording shown on your devices.
Start the new tablet
- Turn on the new tablet.
- Choose your language and region, then connect it to Wi‑Fi.
- When setup asks whether you want to copy apps and data, choose the option to copy from an Android device. Do not skip this screen if you want the direct setup path.
Pair the tablets wirelessly
- Keep the old tablet powered on, unlocked, and near the new tablet.
- Follow the pairing instruction on the new tablet. You may be asked to confirm a shape, number, or prompt on both screens.
- Approve the connection on the old tablet and sign in or verify your identity if requested.
- Review the categories available for copying. Select the apps, photos, videos, messages, contacts, settings, and other supported items you want.
- Start the transfer and leave both tablets near each other, connected to power and Wi‑Fi. Do not disconnect or restart either device until setup reports completion.
Pair the tablets with a cable
- Connect the tablets using a compatible data-transfer cable. Add an adapter only when the two tablet ports require different connectors.
- Unlock the old tablet and approve every permission or trust prompt.
- On the new tablet, select the content to copy and begin the transfer.
- Keep the cable attached until the new tablet says copying is complete. A cable can be faster or more stable for a large local library, but the result still depends on the categories each device supports.
The copy duration varies with the amount of data and the connection. Google describes a range from a few minutes to more than an hour; a large photo or video library can take longer than a small app-only transfer.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Restore from a Google Account backup
Use this route when the old tablet cannot be used or when you already created a backup. It is also a useful fallback if direct pairing repeatedly fails.
Create or verify the backup on the old tablet
- Open the tablet’s system backup settings.
- Turn backup on if appropriate for your account and situation.
- Tap Back up now, then inspect the backup details and timestamp.
- Open Google Photos and confirm that required photos and videos have finished backing up. A device backup does not automatically prove that every photo is in Photos.
Restore during setup
- Start the new tablet and connect it to Wi‑Fi.
- Sign in with the same Google Account that contains the backup.
- When setup offers a backup to restore, choose the relevant old-tablet backup and review the categories.
- Accept the restore and leave the tablet online. Apps may continue installing after the initial setup screens disappear.
- Return later to check progress and open important apps. Google says a restore can take up to 24 hours to complete fully.
Google warns that not every app can back up or restore all settings and data. A new tablet running an older Android version than the old tablet can also receive an incomplete restore. Install available system updates before judging the result, provided the tablet supports them.
Copy downloads, documents, and other files manually
Manual copying is the recovery step for items that setup does not include. Google’s general switching guidance points to Drive or Photos for internet-based copying and to a computer for copying folders. An external USB drive is optional, not a universal requirement: support for external storage varies by tablet.

Use Drive or another cloud copy
- On the old tablet, upload missing documents, PDFs, recordings, and selected folders to Drive or another cloud service you already use.
- Wait for uploads to finish and verify that the files open from the cloud.
- On the new tablet, install or open the same service, sign in, and download files for offline use if needed.
- Check the destination folder in the tablet’s file manager rather than assuming a cloud preview is a local copy.
Use a computer
- Connect the old tablet to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- Unlock the tablet and choose the USB mode that permits file transfer when prompted.
- Copy the folders you need, paying particular attention to Download, Documents, DCIM, Pictures, Movies, Music, and any app-specific export folder.
- Eject the old tablet safely, connect the new tablet, and copy the files into suitable folders.
- Open several files on the new tablet to verify that the copies are complete before deleting anything from the old one.
Do not assume that a gallery view contains every image. Check the old tablet’s file manager for hidden folders, screenshots, messaging-app media, voice recordings, and files stored outside the standard camera directory.

Manufacturer-specific transfer tools
Google points owners of Samsung tablets to Smart Switch as an additional transfer option. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact tablet models, ports, and Android versions involved; a brand name alone does not prove that every model combination is compatible. Manufacturer tools can expose extra choices, but they still cannot restore private data from an app that does not provide a transferable backup.
If you skipped transfer during setup
Some tablets offer a later Finish setting up prompt or a Settings option to copy data from another device. Availability depends on the manufacturer and Android version. Look in Settings for a setup, backup, or data-transfer entry and follow the on-screen path.

If some data has already been transferred, Google says additional data must come from the same old device. If the later-copy option is absent, use the Google Account backup route or manually copy the missing files. Avoid resetting the new tablet until you have identified exactly what is missing and preserved anything already created on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common transfer failures
The old tablet does not appear
- Confirm that both tablets have internet access when using wireless setup.
- Unlock the old tablet and keep its screen awake while pairing.
- Check that the confirmation prompts or pairing code match on both screens.
- Move the tablets closer together and retry.
- If setup offers both methods, switch from wireless to a compatible data cable or from cable to wireless.
The transfer stopped, froze, or was skipped
- Keep both tablets charging and restart the transfer only after noting what has already copied.
- Use a different known data-capable cable or the alternative method offered by setup.
- Check free storage on the new tablet and select fewer categories if necessary.
- Look for Finish setting up or a Settings option to copy from another device.
- If the transfer cannot resume, restore the latest backup and manually copy folders that setup omitted.
An app installed but its data is missing
- Sign in to the same account used by the app.
- Check the app’s own cloud-sync, export, or backup controls.
- Look for an in-app restore option or contact the developer if the data is not synchronized.
- For games, authenticators, password managers, and financial apps, follow their dedicated migration procedure before wiping the old tablet.
The new tablet has an older Android version
Update the new tablet if updates are available and supported. Google warns that restoring from a newer Android device to one running an older Android version may be incomplete. If an update is impossible, treat the restore as partial and perform a manual audit of files and app data.
The tablet is managed by work or school
Management policies can block transfer, backup, or access to organization-owned apps and files. Ask the administrator which managed apps, accounts, and documents may be moved and whether a formal enrollment process is required.

Verify everything before erasing the old tablet
Keep the old tablet intact until the new one passes a deliberate check. On the new tablet:
- Open every important app and confirm that required accounts are signed in.
- Review recent and older photos, videos, screenshots, and messaging-app media.
- Open representative files from Downloads, Documents, recordings, and other folders.
- Check contacts, calendars, messages, and call history that you rely on.
- Test app-specific items such as game saves, authenticator codes, offline maps, notes, and work files.
- Confirm that cloud services show the expected sync status and that offline copies open without a network connection when needed.
- Check the new tablet’s storage so a delayed restore or pending app installation has room to finish.
Only after this inspection should you factory-reset, trade in, recycle, or give away the old tablet. A reset permanently removes local files, so preserve anything still missing first.
Bottom line
Start with the new tablet’s built-in Copy apps and data flow, using wireless pairing or a compatible data cable. Restore a Google Account backup when the old tablet is unavailable, then manually copy Downloads and other folders that Android excludes. Because app support and device menus vary, the transfer is complete only after you verify the new tablet—not when the setup wizard reaches its final screen.
