You can move most of the useful setup to a new Apple TV 4K, but Apple does not provide a complete clone of every tvOS preference, third-party password, or app-specific save. During setup, use Set Up with iPhone or iPad to add your Apple Account and Wi-Fi details, then enable One Home Screen with the same Apple Account. Apps can be synchronized or downloaded again, while many services may require a fresh sign-in. Keep the old Apple TV connected until you have tested everything you use.
What transfers automatically—and what does not
The new Apple TV 4K uses a combination of account setup, Home screen synchronization, and App Store downloads rather than a one-click device image. The table below separates what Apple documents from the items you should plan to handle yourself.

Prepare before connecting the replacement Apple TV
Use the right display connection
Connect the new Apple TV 4K to a compatible television with an HDMI cable, plug in its power, and select the HDMI input used by the box. Apple specifies HDMI 2.0 or later for 4K HDR. HDMI 2.1 is required to access all Apple TV features. If the television, receiver, or switch in the chain is older, connect the Apple TV directly to the television for initial setup so an incompatible intermediary does not prevent a picture.

Have a network and account ready
Use Wi-Fi or Ethernet during setup. Keep the old Apple TV on the network while you compare the two devices. You will need the Apple Account used on the old Apple TV if you want One Home Screen synchronization and iCloud Home data. If you plan to use an iPhone or iPad for setup, charge it, unlock it, and keep it close to the new Apple TV.

Make a short verification list
Before unplugging the old unit, note the services and settings that matter to you. Include streaming profiles, purchased or subscribed content, audio output, picture mode, subtitles, accessibility options, Home scenes, Bluetooth accessories, and any app whose local state is important. This is not a backup export; it is a checklist for detecting items that still need attention.
Transfer setup step by step
1. Connect and start the new Apple TV 4K
- Insert the HDMI cable into the Apple TV 4K and the television or compatible receiver. For 4K HDR, use an HDMI 2.0-or-later connection; HDMI 2.1 gives access to all Apple TV features.
- Connect power and turn on the television.
- Switch the television to the correct HDMI input.
- Connect the Apple TV to Wi-Fi or Ethernet when the setup assistant asks.
If you see no image, verify the selected input, reseat both HDMI ends, and temporarily bypass an AV receiver or HDMI switch. Once the setup screen is visible, continue with the account-transfer choice.
2. Choose Set Up with iPhone or iPad
- At the setup prompt, select Set Up with iPhone or iPad.
- Unlock the nearby iPhone or iPad and keep it close to the Apple TV.
- Follow the on-screen prompts on both devices.
- Approve the transfer of the Apple Account and Wi-Fi settings when asked.
Apple describes this route as a way to automatically add your Apple Account and Wi-Fi settings. It does not mean that every app password, local preference, or app database is copied. If the nearby device uses the wrong Apple Account, stop and choose manual setup instead of binding the new Apple TV to an unintended account.

3. Turn on One Home Screen
- On the new Apple TV, open Settings.
- Go to Profiles and Accounts.
- Select the default profile.
- Choose One Home Screen and turn it on.
- Sign in with the same Apple Account used on the old Apple TV if prompted.
One Home Screen keeps the Home screen appearance and app arrangement synchronized across Apple TV devices using that account. Apple limits this feature to the default profile, so other profiles should be checked separately. Give the new device time to receive the synchronized list before judging that an app is absent.
4. Let downloads finish, then install missing apps
Open the App Store after the initial synchronization settles. Search for any app that is not shown, select its download option, and wait for installation to finish. The Apple TV can download common streaming apps, but availability varies by country, region, tvOS compatibility, and the app publisher. A slow or interrupted network can leave the Home screen synchronized while binaries are still waiting to download.
Open each important app once. A service may display its sign-in screen even though the app itself has been restored. Complete the sign-in using the service’s approved method, then check the active profile and any downloads or preferences exposed inside that app.

5. Restore iCloud Home features
- Open Settings on the Apple TV 4K.
- Go to Users and Accounts and select your account.
- Open iCloud.
- Confirm that you are signed in with the same Apple Account used for your Home setup.
Apple says the same Apple Account is required for iCloud Home. When it is enabled, Home accessories and scenes configured on your other devices can be available on the new Apple TV. If a scene is missing, first confirm the account, network connection, and iCloud status before changing the accessory itself.

Compare the new Apple TV with the old one in the areas you recorded before setup. Check video format and dynamic-range behavior, audio output, subtitle and caption preferences, accessibility controls, privacy choices, screen-saver behavior, Bluetooth devices, and any restrictions. Use the old device as a reference rather than assuming that a matching Home screen means matching system settings.
7. Test before erasing the old device
Play a title in every service you rely on, switch profiles, invoke a Home scene, test the remote, and confirm that audio reaches the intended device. Check both Wi-Fi and Ethernet behavior if you use both, and verify that the television changes inputs or wakes as expected. Keep the old Apple TV available until these checks succeed; erasing it first removes your easiest reference for settings and account details.

Set Up with iPhone versus manual setup
Both methods lead to the same follow-up work: enable One Home Screen, check apps, confirm iCloud Home, and test service logins. The choice mainly affects how much information you enter during the first minutes.

Verification checklist after setup
Account and profiles
- Confirm the Apple Account shown on the new Apple TV is the one intended for purchases, subscriptions, One Home Screen, and iCloud Home.
- Switch through every profile you use and verify its visible apps and service accounts.
- Check that One Home Screen is enabled for the default profile rather than assuming it applies to every profile.
Apps and services
- Scan the Home screen for missing icons and use the App Store to download them.
- Launch high-priority services and complete any sign-in or device-authorization flow.
- Confirm the correct household or viewer profile inside each service.
- Check app-specific downloads, watchlists, parental controls, and saved preferences where those features matter.
Home and accessories
- Open the Home controls and test at least one accessory and one scene.
- If controls are unavailable, revisit Settings > Users and Accounts > your account > iCloud and verify the account.
- Reconnect or re-pair Bluetooth accessories only after confirming that they are not simply still associated with the old Apple TV.
Picture, sound, and control
- Play both standard and high-dynamic-range content if your television supports them.
- Confirm the selected audio output, receiver or speaker control, volume behavior, and lip-sync performance.
- Test the Siri Remote’s navigation, charging response, and television power or volume controls.
- Review subtitles, captions, VoiceOver, Zoom, color filters, and other accessibility features you depend on.
Troubleshooting common transfer problems
The iPhone setup option does not appear
Make sure the iPhone or iPad is unlocked, nearby, connected to Wi-Fi, and using the Apple Account you intend to use. If the prompt still does not appear, select manual setup and enter the details on the Apple TV. Manual setup is a fallback for the connection method, not a different migration system, so you should still perform the One Home Screen, app, iCloud Home, and verification steps.
The Home screen is not matching
Open Settings > Profiles and Accounts > default profile > One Home Screen and confirm that it is on. Check that both Apple TVs use the same Apple Account and give the new device time to synchronize. If the mismatch affects a non-default profile, remember that Apple’s One Home Screen setting is limited to the default profile; review that profile’s apps separately.

An app icon is present but the app will not open
Wait for its download to finish and check the network connection. If the app is unavailable in your region or no longer supports the Apple TV’s tvOS version, the App Store may not offer a working installation. For an app that opens to a login screen, use the service’s sign-in or activation process; Home screen synchronization does not establish every third-party session.
Home accessories or scenes are missing
Verify that the new Apple TV is online, that the intended Apple Account is signed in, and that iCloud Home is enabled under the account’s iCloud settings. Test again after those checks. If the accessory itself is offline, resolve that device’s network or power problem separately rather than repeatedly changing the Apple TV account.
Picture or sound is wrong after the move
Check the HDMI path first. Use an HDMI 2.0-or-later connection for 4K HDR and remove an older receiver or switch temporarily if it may not pass the required signal. Then review the new Apple TV’s video format, dynamic-range matching, audio output, and television input. These preferences are not covered by a complete Apple-documented export/import process, so copying the old values manually is expected.
You already erased the old Apple TV
Continue with the account, App Store, iCloud Home, and service checks on the new device. Reinstall missing apps and use each provider’s account-recovery or activation flow for credentials. If a setting or local app state was stored only on the old device, Apple does not document a universal method to recover it through this setup process.
When it is safe to retire the old Apple TV
Erase or sell the old unit only after the new Apple TV has passed your checklist: the intended Apple Account is present, the default profile has the expected Home screen, required apps are installed, important services play content, Home scenes respond, and picture, sound, accessibility, and remote controls behave correctly. Keeping the old device until then gives you a working comparison point and avoids turning an incomplete download or forgotten login into a preventable outage.
