On an Analogue Pocket, playing a GBA game file is a separate workflow from inserting a cartridge: update the Pocket, install a third-party openFPGA GBA core, copy the required BIOS and a game file to the core’s SD-card folder, then launch the core. The steps below use the Spiritualized GBA core because its maintainer documents the filenames and paths. Core packages, firmware menus and directory layouts can change, so check the current instructions before copying anything.

What this setup actually does

The Analogue Pocket supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges through its cartridge slot. Analogue’s product page also states: “Analogue Pocket does not play copyrighted rom files, it plays legacy game cartridges via the cartridge slot.” File-based GBA play described here uses the Pocket’s separate openFPGA ecosystem and a third-party core; it should not be read as an Analogue endorsement of particular ROM files or as a statement that copying or using a file is lawful everywhere.

openFPGA lets compatible third-party FPGA cores and their assets load from a package of folders on the Pocket’s microSD card. The core supplies the GBA hardware implementation; the BIOS and game file are separate assets that you provide. This guide does not generalize the paths to every FPGA handheld. Other devices and other cores may require different archives, BIOS names, folders or launch menus.

Use only game files you are entitled to use. The sources for this setup do not resolve jurisdiction-specific rules about backups, format shifting or downloading, so check the law that applies where you live.

What you need before copying files

Requirement What is established What is not specified
Analogue Pocket A Pocket with an operating microSD slot and openFPGA support. No other FPGA handheld follows these exact paths automatically.
microSD card Required for the documented core-and-assets workflow. The cited documentation does not set a capacity, speed class or brand.
Current Pocket firmware Check Analogue Pocket Support and follow its current update instructions. The page listed firmware v2.7, dated September 4, 2026, when checked. That version may no longer be current when you follow the guide.
GBA openFPGA core The Spiritualized GBA core repository provides the package and its installation directions: openFPGA-GBA. Core releases and folder contents can change.
GBA BIOS A file named gba_bios.bin, placed at /assets/gba/common/ for this core. This guide does not provide or link to BIOS downloads.
Your game file The core README says to place ROM files in the same /assets/gba/common/ folder. Use files you are legally entitled to use; format support should be confirmed in the current README.
Computer or phone for copying A card reader is a convenient way to copy the package and files. A USB microSD reader is optional, not a documented requirement.

Step 1: Check and update Pocket firmware

  1. Open Analogue’s Pocket Support page before preparing the card.
  2. Read the current firmware version, release date and update notes. At the time of the cited listing, the available entry was firmware v2.7 from 2026-09-04.
  3. Follow Analogue’s current update procedure exactly. Do not assume a menu label, file name or update method from an older guide is still valid.
  4. Power the Pocket off and back on after the update, then verify that it reaches the normal home screen before installing the core.

Updating first avoids diagnosing a missing-core problem that is actually caused by an outdated system. Firmware and third-party cores are maintained separately, so a core’s README remains the authority for that core’s current requirements.

Step 2: Install the GBA openFPGA core on the SD card

Analogue describes openFPGA core packages as ZIP files containing the directory structure that should be extracted to an SD card. The Spiritualized README likewise instructs users to unzip the contents onto the root of the Pocket SD card in the appropriate folders.

  1. Download the current release or installation package from the maintainer’s openFPGA-GBA repository. Read the release notes or README for any change that post-dates this guide.
  2. Turn off the Pocket and remove its microSD card, or use a card reader while the card is unmounted from the Pocket.
  3. Open the downloaded archive on your computer. Copy the archive’s contents to the top level, or root, of the microSD card. The goal is for the package’s folders to sit directly on the card, not inside a newly created folder named after the ZIP file.
  4. Keep existing Pocket folders unless the core’s current instructions explicitly say otherwise. Allow the operating system to merge the package’s assets, cores or related directories with existing directories rather than nesting them under an extra parent folder.
  5. Eject the card safely, reinstall it in the Pocket and power on.

A common structural mistake is extracting openFPGA-GBA-main (or a release-folder equivalent) as one directory and leaving the actual package one level below the SD-card root. If the core does not appear later, inspect the card visually and compare its top-level folders with the README rather than repeatedly copying the same archive.

Step 3: Add the required GBA BIOS

For the Spiritualized core, create or use this exact directory:

/assets/gba/common/

Put the required BIOS file in that folder with this exact name:

/assets/gba/common/gba_bios.bin

The filename and location are case-sensitive in practice on some computers and are part of the core’s documented requirement. Do not rename a different file casually, add a second extension such as .bin.bin, or leave the BIOS inside the downloaded ZIP. This guide establishes where the core expects the file; it does not provide a BIOS source or grant permission to obtain one.

If you are using another GBA core, stop here and read that core’s instructions. A different core may use another BIOS filename, may package a BIOS differently, or may document a different directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Copy your GBA game file

The Spiritualized README says: “Place rom files in the assets/gba/common folder.” In the Pocket’s SD-card layout, that is:

/assets/gba/common/
  1. Copy the GBA file you are entitled to use into /assets/gba/common/, alongside gba_bios.bin.
  2. Keep the game file’s extension and filename unchanged unless the current core documentation says a rename is required. Avoid putting it in /assets/gba/ itself, a personal subfolder, or the core’s installation folder.
  3. Safely eject the microSD card before inserting it into the Pocket.

The documented path is intentionally simple: BIOS and game files share the common folder. Do not treat that path as a universal openFPGA convention; it is the path specified for this core.

Step 5: Launch the core and select the game

  1. Insert the prepared microSD card and power on the Pocket.
  2. Open the Pocket’s openFPGA area from the home interface.
  3. Select the installed GBA core. The exact presentation can change with Pocket firmware and core releases.
  4. Use the core’s file browser or launch screen to choose the game file in assets/gba/common.
  5. Start the game and confirm that it reaches the expected GBA software screen.

If the core launches but the game list is empty, return to the card rather than changing unrelated Pocket settings. Check the directory, spelling and archive extraction first.

Ways to transfer files to the Pocket

Use a computer and microSD card reader

This is the straightforward method for installing a core and copying a BIOS or game file: remove the card, mount it on the computer, copy the files, safely eject it, and return it to the Pocket. A USB microSD reader can make that process easier on a desktop or laptop, but the cited documentation does not require a particular reader.

Use the Pocket’s USB SD Access debugging feature

Analogue’s Debugging Aids documentation describes a USB-C debugging feature called USB SD Access. When enabled, it mounts the Pocket’s SD card to a computer or phone. The documentation quotes an approximate transfer speed of 700 KB/s and says the method is not recommended for large files.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

USB SD Access is therefore a developer/debugging option, not the standard workflow to assume for every Pocket owner. Its 700 KB/s figure applies to that option specifically; it is not a measurement of all microSD cards, readers or ordinary card transfers. If you use it, follow the debugging documentation’s enablement and unmount instructions and do not disconnect the cable while the card is being written.

Troubleshooting missing cores, BIOS errors and empty game lists

The GBA core does not appear in openFPGA

  • Power off and reinsert the card, then check that the archive was extracted to the SD-card root rather than left as a ZIP file.
  • Look for an unintended extra directory level, such as /openFPGA-GBA-main/cores/... when the package expects /cores/... at the root.
  • Compare the installed folders with the current README and confirm that the package matches your Pocket firmware.
  • If you copied over USB SD Access, safely unmount the card and restart the Pocket before judging the installation.

The core launches but reports a missing BIOS

  • Confirm that the file is named exactly gba_bios.bin.
  • Confirm that it is directly inside /assets/gba/common/, not in a download folder, ZIP archive or nested folder.
  • Check for hidden duplicate extensions. Some desktop systems hide known extensions, so a displayed name of gba_bios.bin can actually be gba_bios.bin.bin.
  • Use the current core README to verify that its BIOS requirement has not changed.

The game file does not appear

  • Move the file directly into /assets/gba/common/ beside the BIOS.
  • Check that the card was safely ejected after copying and that the Pocket is reading the intended card.
  • Do not assume a renamed or unusual file extension is supported; consult the current core instructions.
  • Try one entitled game file at a time while diagnosing the folder layout, then add other files after the first appears.

The game starts incorrectly or fails after a firmware update

Record the Pocket firmware version and core release, then consult the maintainer’s current issue notes and README. Firmware updates can change the surrounding platform while the core has its own release schedule. Avoid mixing files from an old core archive with a new one unless the maintainer explicitly documents that combination.

Playing a file versus making a cartridge backup

These are different goals. If you already have an entitled GBA file, the openFPGA workflow above is about placing it on the card and launching it. If you have a physical cartridge and want to create a file, you need a cartridge-dumping tool or hardware in addition to the Pocket core.

The openFPGA Library lists kroy.CartTools version 0.9999.20260920.1, dated September 20, 2026, as a third-party utility intended to identify and dump GB, GBC and GBA cartridges through the Pocket cartridge slot. Its listing says save restoration is alpha and that GBA saves are not restored. It documents verified save restoration only for several named GB/GBC cases and says other cases remain untested; those claims should not be extended to GBA.

That utility’s availability and behavior may change. Treat it as an optional cartridge-backup route, not as a prerequisite for playing a file and not as a guarantee that a GBA cartridge save can be restored.

Choosing the right workflow

Situation Best-fit path Files or hardware involved Important limitation
You already have an entitled GBA file Install the Spiritualized GBA openFPGA core and copy the file to the documented folder. Pocket, microSD card, core package, gba_bios.bin, game file. Folder names and BIOS requirements belong to this core and may differ elsewhere.
You own a cartridge and want to play it as supplied Use the Pocket’s cartridge slot. Compatible GBA cartridge; no ROM-file copy is needed. This is the ordinary cartridge workflow, distinct from SD-card file loading.
You own a cartridge and want a personal dump Consider a current third-party cartridge utility such as the documented tool, after checking its status. Pocket cartridge slot and the utility’s supported setup. The listing says save restore is alpha and GBA saves are not restored.
You want to transfer a large collection quickly Use a card reader rather than USB SD Access. Computer and microSD card reader are convenient. USB SD Access is documented at about 700 KB/s and is not recommended for large files.

Keeping the setup maintainable

  • Bookmark Pocket Support and check firmware notes before a major update.
  • Keep a copy of the core’s README with your setup notes, including the expected BIOS filename and path.
  • When replacing a core, remove obsolete files only when its maintainer’s instructions say they are no longer needed; otherwise merge the new package carefully.
  • Back up your own configuration and legally obtained files on your computer before reorganizing the card.
  • Label the card or maintain a text note with the firmware version, core version and folder layout. That makes a future “missing file” problem much easier to isolate.

The practical checklist is: current firmware, current core package, correct extraction at the SD-card root, /assets/gba/common/gba_bios.bin, your entitled game file in the same folder, safe ejection, and launch through openFPGA. If any one of those elements is missing, fix that element before changing unrelated settings.

Compatibility and legal boundaries

Analogue’s product documentation covers cartridge compatibility, while the openFPGA documentation and the Spiritualized README describe a third-party core and its file-loading procedure. Those statements describe different paths on the same device. They do not turn an SD-card file into an officially supported copyrighted-ROM feature, and they do not establish a universal right to make or use a backup. Keep the technical instructions and your local legal obligations separate when deciding which files to copy.
