Transfer your 360-degree camera’s original files to a phone or computer using a method documented for your camera, then make and verify a second copy before deleting or formatting the card. Phone apps, USB connections, card readers, file types, and cloud options vary by model, so check the manufacturer’s current instructions rather than assuming one workflow fits every camera.
Choose a transfer method your camera supports
Start with the camera model and the device you want to copy footage to. Official instructions for the Insta360 X4 and DJI Osmo 360 document several routes, but those examples do not establish compatibility for every 360-degree camera.
| Method | What it does | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Phone app | Insta360 documents downloading X4 files to a phone for editing or export in its app. DJI describes connecting the Osmo 360 through DJI Mimo and saving video to a smartphone. Insta360 X4 transfer guide; DJI Osmo 360 FAQ. | Available storage and app behavior depend on the camera and phone. A phone copy is not automatically a second backup. |
| USB to computer | Insta360’s X4 instructions describe connecting to a Mac or Windows computer and selecting USB Drive Mode. DJI also documents USB transfer for the Osmo 360. Insta360 X4 transfer guide; DJI Osmo 360 support. | Use the cable, connection mode, and computer port specified for your model; labels and requirements can differ. |
| Card reader | For Osmo 360 footage on a microSD card, DJI recommends a reader to export content to a computer or smartphone. DJI Osmo 360 FAQ. | This applies only when the camera uses removable media and the reader works with both the card and destination device. Check the camera’s card requirements and the reader’s interface. |
| Supported cloud backup | Insta360 recommends exporting important media to a phone system album or backing it up to a cloud drive. Its Insta360+ guide describes manual or automatic backup after pairing the camera with an account and adding Wi-Fi. Insta360 X4 transfer guide; Insta360+ setup guide. | Cloud backup is a product-specific option, not a universal camera feature. Availability and setup can depend on the product and region. |
There is no universal fastest method: transfer time depends on the camera, card, cable, reader, computer, and connection. Choose based on compatibility, convenience, whether you need to remove the card, and whether the process leaves you with a separate copy.

Transfer the original files
To a phone
Follow the camera maker’s pairing and download steps in its app. For example, DJI’s Osmo 360 FAQ describes using DJI Mimo to connect and save video to a smartphone. Insta360 says X4 files can be downloaded to a phone and then edited or exported with its app. Keep enough free space on the phone for the files you intend to copy.

To a computer over USB
Use the model-specific instructions for connecting the camera and selecting its computer-transfer mode. Insta360’s X4 guide calls this USB Drive Mode; do not assume another camera uses the same label or steps. After connecting, follow the manufacturer’s directions to locate and copy the footage.
With a card reader
If your camera records to a removable microSD card, remove it only as the manufacturer directs, then connect it through a reader compatible with the card and your computer or phone. DJI explicitly documents this route for Osmo 360 content. A reader is not a universal solution for cameras without removable storage or devices that lack a compatible connection.

Locate and preserve related files
Insta360’s general computer-transfer guide directs users to open DCIM > Camera01 and copy the files. It gives .insv and .lrv as examples from certain models; other cameras can use different file types and folder structures. Keep the related originals together, and avoid moving or renaming them until you know the camera’s editing software can still find them. Preserve the camera originals even if you also export an edited or reframed video. Insta360 computer transfer guide.
Make and verify a second copy before clearing the camera
A transfer is not a complete backup if the only copy is still on the camera or if the copied files have not been checked. Use this sequence before formatting or deleting anything:

- Identify the exact camera model. Open its current official instructions and choose a documented transfer route. The Insta360 X4 guide and DJI Osmo 360 support page illustrate why the steps are model-specific.
- Copy the originals to a computer or compatible phone. Keep associated camera files together and leave them in place until you know the camera’s software can locate them.
- Create a separate second copy. Copy the footage from the first destination to external storage, or use a cloud destination supported by your camera and service. An external drive can serve as a local second copy after transfer to a computer; the cited manufacturer instructions do not establish a universal direct camera-to-drive workflow.
- Verify the copies. Confirm the files are present at the destinations and open in the relevant camera software or player. Check that the footage you need is represented before removing the camera’s copy.
- Clear camera storage only after verification. When practical, keep the second copy somewhere separate from the camera so one loss or damage event is less likely to affect both.
Check card and storage compatibility
Before relying on a removable card or reader, confirm that the card meets the camera’s requirements and that the reader connects to your destination device. A card reader can make copying more direct, but it does not itself create a backup: the footage still needs to be copied to another storage location and checked. For camera-specific card guidance, consult the relevant manufacturer instructions, such as the Insta360 X4 transfer guide or DJI Osmo 360 support.
