To move a Pokémon game between emulator apps without restarting, transfer the game’s ordinary in-game save (usually called a battery save), not an emulator savestate. Make a separate backup first, export or locate the save in the source app, then import or copy it into the destination app using that app’s expected filename, extension, folder and core. Launch the game and confirm the trainer, party and progress before touching the backup.
What you are actually transferring
Emulators commonly create two different kinds of progress files. Confusing them is the main reason a transfer appears to fail.
Battery save (the in-game save)
A battery save is produced by the Pokémon game itself when you choose its Save command. It contains the trainer profile, party, boxes, items, badges, story flags and other data the cartridge would retain. This is the file to use for a move between emulator apps whenever possible.
Different emulators and cores may give this file different extensions. Libretro’s mGBA documentation, for example, identifies *.srm as a cartridge battery save in that frontend/core context. Another emulator may use .sav, .dsv or a different name. The extension is a clue, not proof that two files are interchangeable.

Savestate (an emulator snapshot)
A savestate is a snapshot of the emulator and game at a particular instant. It can include CPU registers, memory, video and audio state, timing information and core-specific data. mGBA’s API exposes separate operations for loading save data and loading state files or state slots, which reflects the technical difference.
States are normally tied to the emulator, core, version and sometimes the exact ROM image. A state that loads perfectly in the source app may be unreadable in another app, even when both run the same Pokémon title. Libretro’s mGBA documentation lists *.state# separately from *.srm; melonDS migration notes also state that legacy-core savestates cannot be migrated to melonDS DS. Use a battery save for portability and keep a state only as a fallback for the original setup.
| File type | Created by | Best use | Cross-app reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery save | The game’s Save command | Moving a Pokémon game to another emulator or device | Usually the most portable, provided the destination accepts the format |
| Savestate | The emulator’s Save State command | Quickly resuming an exact moment in the same emulator/core | Often core- and version-dependent; do not assume it can migrate |
Check compatibility before you copy anything
Write down the source and destination details before opening a file manager. Compatibility depends on more than the Pokémon title.
Recommended Free Tools
- System: Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS or another platform.
- Emulator and core: Two apps can use different cores, and one app can offer several cores for the same system.
- ROM and region: Use the same game release and region where possible. A save made for one variant may not be recognized by another.
- Save kind: Confirm that you are handling the in-game battery save rather than a state slot.
- Expected extension: Find out whether the destination expects
.sav,.srm,.dsvor another format. - Expected directory: Some apps import through a menu; others scan a particular save folder beside the ROM or in an app-specific data directory.
- Version and platform: iOS, Android, Windows, Linux and handheld distributions can expose different folders and menu labels.
Do not overwrite the destination’s existing file until you have preserved it. If the destination already contains progress, copy that file to a separate backup folder and give the copy a descriptive name such as Pokemon-White-destination-before-transfer.sav.

The safe, universal transfer procedure
The following sequence works whether the apps provide an export button or require manual file copying. Replace the generic labels with the names shown by your emulator.
- Finish a normal in-game save. Open Pokémon’s own menu, choose Save and wait for the game to confirm completion. Avoid relying on a recent savestate as the only copy of your progress.
- Close the game cleanly. Exit to the emulator’s game list and, if the app has a Quit or Close command, use it. This gives the emulator a chance to flush the battery-save data to storage.
- Make an untouched backup. Use the source app’s export or share function, or copy the documented save file from its storage directory. Keep the original unchanged and make a second working copy for any rename or conversion.
- Identify the real battery-save file. Look for the file associated with the ROM and the extension documented by the source app or core. A file named for a state slot, or one ending in a state-number pattern, is not the ordinary game save.
- Use the destination’s import function when available. In a save-management screen, choose Import, Restore, Load save or the equivalent, then select the backed-up working copy. An explicit importer may perform required placement or conversion.
- If there is no importer, copy to the destination folder. Put the file in the directory the destination core scans. Match the destination’s expected base filename; some apps require the save and ROM to share the same name before their extensions. Do not change an extension merely because it looks familiar.
- Convert only when the format requires it. If the destination documents a different container or the file is rejected, use a converter appropriate to that system and keep both the original and converted outputs. Renaming
.dsvto.sav, for example, is not automatically a conversion. - Launch and verify before deleting anything. Start the exact game in the destination app. Confirm the trainer name, badges, party, box contents, money and a recent story location. Save again from inside Pokémon, close the app, reopen it and confirm that the new save persists. Only then should you consider replacing an older destination copy.
If the game starts at “New Game,” stop and close it without saving. A new save can overwrite the file you are trying to diagnose. Restore the backup, then check the filename, directory, core and format.
Example: moving a save from Delta on iOS to RetroArch
“How do I move my save from Delta to RetroArch?” is usually a battery-save question. The exact Delta menu names and export behavior can change, and current official Delta import/export documentation was not established here, so treat any iOS menu path as version-dependent rather than universal.
On the Delta side
- Open the Pokémon game in Delta and use Pokémon’s own Save command.
- Exit the game rather than leaving it suspended in a state.
- Use Delta’s documented file-management, Files or share workflow to export the game’s ordinary save, if your installed version exposes one. If Delta presents both a save and a state, select the ordinary save.
- Save the exported file in a location where you can make an untouched copy. Record its original filename and extension before changing anything.
A community Pokémon-save repository describes a Delta-to-RetroArch DS workflow and warns about .dsv versus .sav handling. That is an example rather than official Delta documentation, and some of its instructions are explicitly untested. Use it to understand the type of issue you may encounter, not as a guarantee that every Delta release uses the same path.

In RetroArch
- Install or select the core that will run the game. Record the core name; a save can be recognized by one core and ignored by another.
- Open RetroArch’s save-directory settings or the core’s documented storage location. RetroArch may keep saves in a central directory, a content-specific folder or a folder configured by the user.
- Back up any existing file with the same game name in that directory.
- Place the Delta battery save in the required location and use the filename and extension expected by the selected core. If the core expects a different format, convert the file rather than merely renaming it.
- Start the game, load through the Pokémon title screen and verify the trainer and progress. Save in-game, quit, relaunch and verify again.
For Nintendo DS migrations, the core matters especially. Libretro’s melonDS DS notes say the save-data format is unchanged from the legacy core but instruct users to rename the save directory and .sav files to .srm. The same notes say legacy-core savestates cannot be migrated to melonDS DS. Follow the instructions for the exact core and version you selected; do not apply the .srm rule to every RetroArch system.
Extensions, filenames and folders: what they mean
| Situation | What to check | Safe action |
|---|---|---|
Source and destination both show .sav |
Whether the cores use the same internal format and filename convention | Copy a backup first, then test the file; identical extensions do not prove compatibility |
Destination expects .srm |
The selected Libretro core’s documented save directory and naming rule | Place or rename a working copy only after confirming that core’s requirement |
DS source exports .dsv, destination requests .sav |
Whether the destination needs a real container conversion | Use a format-aware converter or the destination’s importer; do not rely on a filename change |
| Save is beside the ROM but is ignored | Exact base filename, capitalization, extension and configured save directory | Match the destination’s documented naming pattern and verify its directory setting |
| Several similarly named files exist | Modification time, extension and whether each is a state, backup or battery save | Keep all copies; test one working copy at a time and never delete the originals |
Some frontends derive a save filename from the ROM filename, while others use an internal game identifier. A rename can therefore be necessary even when the data itself is valid. Conversely, a rename cannot repair an incompatible internal format.
When a converter is necessary
Conversion is indicated when the destination rejects the file, shows no save after the filename and folder are correct, or documents a different container. Keep a three-file chain: the untouched source, a working source copy and the converted output. Never run a destructive conversion over the only copy.
mGBA’s 0.9.0 release announcement described a converter that can move between incompatible save formats and extract a battery save from an mGBA savestate. That announcement is historical release evidence; it does not establish how the utility is packaged or launched in current versions. Check the converter’s documentation for the version you actually install.

Extracting a battery save from a savestate is a recovery option, not the preferred workflow. The resulting battery save may represent the game state captured when the snapshot was made, not progress made afterward. If you have both a recent in-game save and a state, test the in-game save first.
Cloud sync does not equal cross-app compatibility
RetroArch’s cloud-sync guide includes save files and states among the data it can synchronize when enabled. This can move RetroArch data between devices, but it does not guarantee that another emulator app can read the files unchanged. Sync also introduces a risk of propagating an older or empty file over a good one.
- Complete and verify the in-game save before syncing.
- Keep a dated local copy outside the synchronized folder.
- Confirm which device supplied the newest file before allowing a conflict resolution.
- Use the destination emulator’s format and directory rules after synchronization, just as you would for a cable or Files transfer.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The destination shows “New Game”
- Close the game without saving.
- Check that the file is a battery save, not a state slot.
- Confirm the core and game version match the source.
- Verify the save’s base filename, extension and directory.
- Try the destination’s explicit import command if one exists.
- If the format differs, restore the untouched backup and convert a copy.
The save appears, but progress is old
You may have copied an older backup, or the source emulator may not have flushed its latest in-game save before it was closed. Reopen the source app, make a new Pokémon save, exit cleanly, check the file’s modification time and repeat the export. Do not overwrite the known-good destination copy until the newer trainer and location are visible.
The emulator reports an invalid or corrupt save
Stop testing on the only file. Restore the original backup, confirm that the ROM and core are correct, and check whether the source used a container that needs conversion. A state file renamed as a battery save will not become valid game data. If a converter is required, use a tool that specifically supports the source and destination formats.

The game loads, but saving fails afterward
This points to a write-permission, read-only-directory or format problem rather than a successful transfer. Check that the destination directory is writable, that the app is allowed to access its storage and that the core is configured to save there. Make a test in-game save, quit, relaunch and confirm that the file’s timestamp changes.
Only a savestate is available
Keep the state in the original emulator and search for a way to create a normal in-game save from it. If mGBA or another tool supports extracting a battery save from that state, work from a copy and expect the extracted save to reflect the snapshot’s moment. There is no general guarantee that a state from one app or core can be opened by another.
A backup routine that prevents irreversible mistakes
Use a simple versioned folder rather than repeatedly replacing one file:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Pokemon-source-original.sav— never edit this copy.Pokemon-before-conversion.sav— working copy before a format change.Pokemon-converted-for-destination.srm— output supplied to the destination.Pokemon-destination-verified.srm— copy made after the destination saves and reloads successfully.
Include the game title, core, platform and date in the filename or a nearby note. Keep at least one copy outside the emulator’s managed folder so an uninstall, cloud conflict or automatic cleanup cannot remove every version.
Final verification checklist
- The source game was saved through Pokémon’s own Save command.
- An untouched source backup still exists.
- The transferred file is a battery save, not a savestate.
- The destination core, ROM variant, directory, filename and extension are documented for that setup.
- Any conversion was performed on a copy, with the original retained.
- The destination loads the intended trainer, party, badges, boxes and recent location.
- A new in-game save survives closing and reopening the destination app.
Following that sequence preserves the part that matters: the game’s own save data, independent of the emulator snapshot that created it. When a transfer fails, treat it first as a format, naming, directory or core mismatch—not as proof that the Pokémon progress has vanished.
