The official way to move a Minecraft world between Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC is Minecraft Bedrock Edition with Realms. Upload the world from the device that stores it, then download a copy on the destination device using the same Microsoft account (or an account that has access to the Realm). The downloaded copy appears in the destination device’s Worlds list and can be renamed.
Before you begin, confirm that the world is a Bedrock world, both devices run the latest available Minecraft version, and the Realm has an active trial or paid subscription. Java Edition worlds follow a different process and cannot be transferred through this Bedrock console workflow.

Realms is Minecraft’s cloud-based transfer route for Bedrock worlds. It temporarily stores the world in a Realm slot so another supported Bedrock device can download it. You do not need a USB drive or a physical cable.
- A Bedrock Edition world: Bedrock is the edition used on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10 and Windows 11, and mobile devices.
- An active Realm: Use a Realms trial or a paid Realms subscription. The account managing the Realm must be able to upload the source world and the destination account must be able to access it.
- Current game versions: Update Minecraft on both devices before uploading or downloading. Version differences can prevent a device from joining or opening the transferred world.
- A Microsoft account: Sign in on each device with the Microsoft account that owns or can access the Realm. Console platform accounts remain important for playing, but Realm access is controlled through Microsoft account permissions.
- A protected source copy: Keep the original world on the source device until you have opened and checked the downloaded copy.
Realms does not convert a Java world to Bedrock. Edition compatibility is the first decision: a Bedrock world can use this workflow, while a Java world needs Java’s own local-file or Realm procedures.

Bedrock and Java: why the edition matters
Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different world formats and have separate multiplayer and Realm systems. A world saved in Java on a PC is not automatically readable by the Bedrock game on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch. Likewise, a Bedrock world from a console is not made into a Java world by downloading it to a PC.
How to identify the edition
- On Windows, the cross-device version is usually labeled Minecraft for Windows in the launcher or store. That is Bedrock Edition.
- The Java game is labeled Minecraft: Java Edition and uses Java-specific world files and procedures.
- Xbox, PlayStation and Switch console saves used for this guide are Bedrock saves, except for older Nintendo Switch Edition saves that still need conversion.
If the PC world is Java, stop before creating a Realm for this procedure. Look for Java-compatible export, import or Realm instructions instead; the Bedrock download will not open it.

The menu names below describe the Bedrock Realms workflow. Some screens vary slightly by platform or game update, but the actions are the same: upload the source world to a Realm slot, then download it from that slot on the destination device.
1. Update both devices and verify the source world
- Install the latest Minecraft update offered for the source device.
- Install the latest Minecraft update on the destination device as well. Do this even if you will not play there until later.
- Open the source device’s Worlds list and verify that the world is present and opens normally.
- Confirm that it is a Bedrock world rather than a Java save or an unconverted legacy Switch save.
Updating first reduces the chance that the upload or download is rejected because the two installations use incompatible versions.
2. Start or use a Realm
- Sign in to Minecraft with the Microsoft account that will manage the Realm.
- Start an active Realms trial or paid Realms subscription if you do not already have one.
- On the source device, select Play, then open the Realms area.
The Realm is a temporary cloud location for the transfer. The subscription is the required service in the official cross-device procedure; no physical storage accessory is required.

3. Open Realms Hub and choose a slot
- From Play, choose the Realm you will use.
- Open Realms Hub.
- Select the Realm world slot you intend to use.
- Choose Edit World.
An empty slot is the safest choice because it leaves any existing Realm world untouched. If every slot contains a world, preserve the current slot first before replacing it.

4. Upload the source world
For an empty slot, select Upload World. Choose the local world you verified in step 1, then confirm the upload. Wait for Minecraft to finish before closing the game or putting the device to sleep.
The upload places a cloud copy in the selected Realm slot. It does not remove the original world from the source device.
5. Replace an occupied slot only after making a backup
If the chosen slot already contains a world, the command is Replace World rather than Upload World. Before confirming, download or otherwise preserve a backup of the current Realm world. Minecraft’s Realms documentation describes Replace World as removing the current world from the active slot before the selected world takes its place.
- Open the occupied slot through Realms Hub and Edit World.
- Use the available backup or download option to preserve the existing Realm world.
- Select Replace World.
- Choose the source world and confirm the replacement.
Do not use Replace World as a way to make a second copy unless you have protected the world that is currently in the slot.

6. Sign in on the destination device
- Launch the Bedrock version of Minecraft on the destination Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or Windows PC.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the Realm or has been invited to it.
- Open Play, then select Realms.
- Choose the Realm and the slot containing the uploaded world.
If the Realm is missing, check the account first. Being signed in to a different Microsoft account is the most common reason a Realm does not appear on another device.
7. Download a local copy
- With the correct Realm selected, choose Edit World.
- Select Download World.
- Wait for the download to complete.
- Return to the normal Worlds tab.
Minecraft creates a local copy named World name – Copy. Open that copy to verify terrain, inventory, builds, farms, permissions and other progress. Rename it from the world settings if you want a shorter or more descriptive name.
Platform-by-platform examples

Moving an old Nintendo Switch Edition world
Some Switch saves were created in the older Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, not the current Bedrock game. Those saves do not immediately appear as ordinary Bedrock worlds.
- Launch the current Bedrock version of Minecraft on the Switch.
- Open the Worlds list.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Sync Old Worlds.
- Choose the legacy world Minecraft discovers.
- Let Minecraft convert it.
- Return to the regular Worlds list and confirm that the converted copy appears.
After conversion, use the normal Realms upload procedure. Keep the original legacy save until you have checked the converted world; conversion creates a Bedrock version but does not make the old format part of the Realm automatically.
Backups, copies and recovery
A transfer is safer when the source and Realm versions are treated as separate copies. The download operation creates a local copy on the destination, while Replace World can remove the world currently occupying a Realm slot.

Before uploading
- Open the source world and verify that recent builds and progress are present.
- Keep the source device’s world untouched until the destination copy has been tested.
- If the world is especially valuable, create an additional backup using the backup options available for that platform.
Before replacing a Realm slot
- Download or otherwise preserve the current Realm world.
- Record which slot contains the existing world.
- Only then choose Replace World and select the new source world.
If the downloaded world is damaged or outdated
- Do not delete the source world or the Realm backup.
- Check the Realm’s available backups and restore an earlier state if one contains the missing progress.
- Update both game installations and retry the download if the issue appears to be version-related.
- For Windows local worlds, use the manual Windows backup and restore process available in Minecraft’s backup documentation.
A seed can recreate the same map layout, but it does not restore your inventory, buildings, achievements, farms or other progress. A seed is therefore not a substitute for a world backup.
Windows local imports and exports
Windows Bedrock also supports local world export and import. Minecraft’s transfer guidance points Windows users to its Bedrock world export and import instructions, while separate backup guidance covers restoring manual Windows world backups.
This gives Windows players another way to keep a local copy after downloading a Realm world. It does not create an officially documented USB workflow for moving console saves directly to a PC. For a console-to-PC transfer, Realms remains the documented cross-device route.

The official instructions reviewed for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC document Realms, cloud or Realm backups, and Windows local-file import. They do not provide a supported direct USB or external-drive procedure for copying a world between these consoles and a PC.
Third-party file extraction, console-storage hacks and unofficial converters may depend on a particular game version, operating system or account setup. They can also expose or damage save data. If you need a supported process, use Realms for the cross-device handoff and keep local or Realm backups for recovery.

Troubleshooting common transfer problems
The Realm is not listed on the destination
- Sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that owns or was invited to the Realm.
- Confirm that the Realm subscription or trial is still active.
- Check that you opened the Bedrock game, not Java Edition.
- Update Minecraft on the destination device.
Upload World or Replace World is unavailable
- Open the Realm through Play > Realms and then Realms Hub.
- Choose a specific slot and select Edit World.
- Use Upload World for an empty slot; use Replace World only for an occupied slot.
- Verify that the account has permission to manage the Realm.
The destination cannot open the downloaded copy
- Update both devices to the most recent Minecraft version.
- Confirm that the destination supports Bedrock Edition.
- Check that the download completed before leaving the Realm screen.
- Try downloading the slot again without deleting the original source world.
The Switch world is missing
If it came from Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, use Sync Old Worlds at the bottom of the Bedrock Worlds list. Only after conversion will it appear as a normal Bedrock world ready for upload.

Progress is missing
Check that you downloaded the correct Realm slot and opened the file named World name – Copy. If the Realm was replaced, inspect its backups and restore the appropriate earlier version. Recreating a world from its seed restores terrain generation only, not player progress.
What happens to the original world?
Uploading does not erase the source device’s local world. Downloading creates another local copy on the destination. You can therefore keep playing the original and the downloaded copy independently, although later changes will not synchronize between them unless you continue using the Realm as the shared active world.
Decide which copy should become the ongoing master before making new builds on both devices. Otherwise, you can end up with two different versions of the same world and no automatic way to merge their changes.
Transfer checklist
- Confirm the source is Bedrock Edition.
- Convert an old Switch Edition save with Sync Old Worlds if necessary.
- Update Minecraft on both devices.
- Start or verify an active Realms trial or paid subscription.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that manages or can access the Realm.
- Open Play > Realms > Realms Hub on the source device.
- Choose an empty slot and Upload World, or back up the slot before using Replace World.
- Sign in on the destination device.
- Open Play > Realms, choose the Realm and slot, then select Edit World > Download World.
- Open the Worlds tab, test the file named World name – Copy, and rename it if desired.
- Keep the source and Realm backups until the destination has been verified.
The Bottom Line
For Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and Windows PC, use Bedrock Edition and Minecraft Realms: upload the source world to a Realm slot, then download it on the destination device. Keep backups, convert legacy Switch saves first, and do not expect a Java world or an unsupported USB method to work with this procedure.
