Yes, you can often move Microsoft Office to a new computer, but the correct method depends on the license. Microsoft 365 is reinstalled by signing in to the account that owns the subscription. Office 2024 and Office 2021 one-time purchases can generally move to another computer you own, subject to Microsoft’s transfer terms and removal from the old computer. Older perpetual editions, work or school licenses, volume installations, and unredeemed product keys follow different procedures.
Identify your Office license before doing anything
Do not start by searching for the product key. A key that has already been redeemed is normally tied to a Microsoft account, so the account—not the printed key—is what you use to reinstall Office. First determine which entitlement is installed on the old computer and who controls it.
| License or edition | Where the entitlement is managed | Transfer or reinstall approach | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal or similar consumer subscription | Personal Microsoft account | Sign in to that account on the new computer and install Office from the account’s services or subscription page. | Subscription rules apply, not the one-time-purchase transfer interval. |
| Microsoft 365 Family | Subscription owner’s Microsoft account and any shared member accounts | Install using the account that owns or received the shared entitlement. | Sharing and device-use limits are controlled by the subscription owner. |
| Office Home, Home & Student, or Home & Business 2024 or 2021 | Microsoft account used at redemption or purchase | Install from that account on the replacement computer, then activate. | Microsoft’s stated transfer interval is no more than once every 90 days, except when hardware failure permits an earlier move; remove the old installation. |
| Older one-time-purchase Office | Microsoft account, product key, or the original license documentation | Follow the terms for that exact edition and use Microsoft’s activation flow. | Terms differ by version; a transfer can require uninstalling the first copy and phone activation. |
| Microsoft 365 work or school account | Organization-managed identity | Sign in with the assigned work or school account and install the applications offered by the organization. | Your administrator must assign a license that includes desktop apps. |
| Volume or centrally managed Office | Organization’s licensing and deployment system | Use the company’s deployment instructions or contact IT. | A personal product key or consumer installer may not activate this edition. |
| Product key never redeemed | The key and the Microsoft account you choose during setup | Redeem it through Microsoft’s setup flow on the intended account, then install from that account. | Choose the account carefully; redemption normally associates the entitlement permanently with it. |
Microsoft describes one-time-purchase editions such as Office Home & Business, Office Home & Student, and Office Home as licensed for one PC or Mac. That is different from a Microsoft 365 subscription, which is an ongoing service entitlement.

Check the old computer and account
Before disconnecting or wiping the old computer, record the information that determines which branch applies.

- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.

- Open an Office application such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Go to File > Account (or Office Account in some versions) and note the product name, edition, and account shown under the signed-in user.
- Look for wording such as Microsoft 365, Office Home & Business 2021, Office Home & Student 2024, or an organization name. Do not infer the edition from the computer’s operating system.
- Determine whether the account is a personal Microsoft account or an address supplied by an employer or school. Organization accounts are governed by the administrator’s assignments.
- If the product was bought as a boxed copy or digital key and has never been redeemed, keep the key available. If it was redeemed previously, expect to install from the associated account instead of entering the key again.
- Save documents separately. Moving a license does not move locally stored Word, Excel, Outlook, or OneNote files, templates, macros, or custom dictionaries.
Move Microsoft 365 to the new computer
For Microsoft 365, the practical transfer is a new installation authenticated with the account that holds the subscription. You are not transferring a perpetual product key between machines.
- On the new computer, open a browser and sign in to the personal Microsoft account that owns the subscription. For a work or school subscription, use the assigned organizational account instead.
- Open the account’s subscriptions, services, or Microsoft 365 installation area. Select the option to install the desktop applications offered by your plan.
- Run the downloaded installer and allow it to finish. Keep the computer connected to the internet while the applications are installed.
- Start Word or another installed application. When prompted, sign in with the same account. The application should display the subscription as activated.
- Open File > Account and verify the product name and activation status before deleting Office from the old computer.
Microsoft states that subscription users can install Microsoft 365 on all of their devices and remain signed in on up to five devices at once. “All devices” does not mean unlimited simultaneous active sessions; if you reach the sign-in limit, sign out of an unused device from the account page. Family subscriptions have separate sharing provisions, so a person using a shared seat should sign in with the account to which the owner assigned access.

Move Office 2024 or Office 2021 one-time purchases
Office 2024 and Office 2021 perpetual licenses have a defined transfer rule. Microsoft allows a move to another computer that belongs to the license holder no more than once every 90 days, with an exception when the original hardware fails. The old installation must be removed, and you must not retain a copy on the first computer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On the old computer, confirm the exact edition and the Microsoft account associated with it.
- On the new computer, sign in to that account and open its Office products or services page.
- Choose the listed Office product and install the desktop applications. If the product is not listed, stop and verify that you are using the account used at redemption or purchase.
- Open an Office application and complete the sign-in or activation prompts.
- After the new installation is working, uninstall Office from the old computer through the operating system’s installed-apps settings. Remove any remaining Office copy that belongs to the transferred license.
- Keep evidence of the transfer, such as the purchase receipt and the account used, in case activation support asks you to verify the license.
The 90-day condition is a licensing rule, not a promise that an activation server will accept repeated moves automatically. If the computer was replaced because of a hardware failure, use Microsoft’s activation support path and explain that exception rather than repeatedly submitting the same product key.

Handle an older one-time-purchase edition
Do not apply the Office 2024 or Office 2021 wording automatically to Office 2019, Office 2016, Office 2013, or earlier products. The license terms for the exact edition control whether a move is permitted and how often it can occur.
- Identify the version and edition in File > Account, or from the original purchase record.
- Read the license terms for that specific product. Look for provisions about transferring the license to another device you own and whether the first installation must be removed.
- Install the edition using the account associated with the purchase or the original installation media and key, following Microsoft’s current setup flow for that version.
- Open an Office application and follow the activation wizard. Some older transfers require phone activation after the online method declines the move.
- Uninstall the old copy when the license terms require it. Keep no working copy on the original computer if the license allows only one active installation.
If the old computer no longer works, retain its hard drive or proof of failure if available. Microsoft’s activation team can determine whether the circumstances meet the edition’s transfer exception; guessing based on a newer edition’s policy can produce an avoidable activation block.

Move a work, school, or volume-license installation
An organization-managed license is controlled by the employer or school, not by a personal product key. The new computer must be assigned a license that includes the desktop Office applications.

- Sign in to the organization’s Microsoft 365 portal or approved software center with that identity.
- Install only the package offered by the organization. A consumer Office installer may be the wrong edition for a volume deployment.
- Open Word or another application and sign in when prompted. If the organization uses device management, wait for its policies to finish applying.
- If the install button is missing, activation reports that no license exists, or the account is rejected, contact IT. The administrator may need to assign the license, remove the old device record, or deploy Office through a management tool.
Do not try to convert a volume-license installation into a personal subscription by entering a consumer key. The licensing channels and activation services are different.

Redeem a product key that has never been used
A never-redeemed key is handled differently from a key that is already attached to an account.
- Use Microsoft’s official setup and redemption flow on the new computer or another trusted device.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account you intend to keep using. If you create or select the wrong account, the license may be difficult to locate later.
- Enter the key exactly as printed and complete redemption.
- After redemption, install Office from the account’s product list. Do not attempt to redeem the same key again if the installer asks you to authenticate.
- Open an Office application and finish activation.
If the key is reported as already used, treat that message as an account-identification problem first. Search the Microsoft accounts you may have used at purchase or redemption and check each account’s services list. Repeatedly entering a redeemed key will not create a second entitlement.
Activation after installation
Activation links the installation on the new computer to the entitlement. The exact screens vary by Office version, but the normal sequence is consistent: open an Office app, sign in or follow the activation wizard, then confirm the status under File > Account.
- Account sign-in prompt: Use the account that owns the subscription or redeemed product. A different personal account can install Office but will not activate someone else’s entitlement.
- Product-key prompt: For a previously redeemed home product, look for a sign-in or account-recovery option instead of entering the old key again.
- Phone-activation option: Older one-time-purchase transfers may present a telephone method. Follow the wizard for that edition and provide the installation information it requests.
- Organization sign-in prompt: Use the work or school identity assigned by IT. Personal accounts cannot satisfy an organization’s license assignment.
Troubleshoot the most common transfer failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Office product is missing from the account page. | You signed in with a different account, or the key was redeemed elsewhere. | Sign out, try the accounts used at purchase or redemption, and check the product name in each services list. For a work or school product, ask the administrator to confirm the assignment. |
| The installer works but Office says “Unlicensed Product.” | The installed edition does not match the entitlement, or activation used the wrong account. | Open File > Account, sign out of the incorrect identity, then sign in with the licensed account. Remove conflicting Office editions if the installer placed more than one. |
| Activation says the license is already in use. | The old computer still has the installation, or the edition has reached a device or transfer condition. | Uninstall Office from the old computer, use the account’s device-management options where available, and review the edition’s transfer terms. Do not keep a copy on both computers when the license permits only one. |
| A 2024 or 2021 move is refused before the normal interval. | The license records a recent transfer. | Wait until the permitted interval has elapsed, unless the original computer suffered hardware failure. For a hardware exception, use Microsoft’s activation support process. |
| An older edition asks for telephone activation. | The edition’s activation system does not complete the transfer online. | Use the phone option in the activation wizard and follow the prompts for that version. Have the installation ID and purchase information available. |
| A work or school account has no install option. | No desktop-app license was assigned, or IT controls deployment. | Contact the organization’s administrator. Ask whether the license includes desktop apps and whether the new device must be enrolled or approved. |
| The old computer is dead and cannot be uninstalled. | Hardware failure prevented normal removal. | Install on the replacement computer, then use Microsoft’s activation support flow and explain the failure. Do not claim a hardware exception unless the original device actually failed. |
What not to do
- Do not assume every Office product follows the same transfer policy.
- Do not buy a replacement license before checking the account that owns the existing product.
- Do not enter a redeemed key repeatedly; locate the associated account instead.
- Do not leave a one-time-purchase installation on the old computer after a permitted transfer.
- Do not use a personal installer for a volume or organization-managed deployment without IT’s approval.
- Do not confuse moving Office with moving your files. Copy or restore documents, Outlook data, templates, and add-ins separately.
When purchasing a new license is actually necessary
A new Office Home 2024 purchase is a fallback, not the normal solution for an eligible transfer. It may be necessary when the original license was never transferable, the product belongs to a former employer or school, the account holding the entitlement cannot be recovered, or the old key is not valid and no purchase record can establish ownership. Before buying, verify the account, edition, and license terms; many apparent “lost license” cases are simply installations signed in with the wrong Microsoft account.
Quick Recap
Final transfer checklist
- Identify whether the product is Microsoft 365, Office 2024 or 2021, an older perpetual edition, or an organization-managed license.
- Find the personal or work/school account that owns or was assigned the entitlement.
- Check the edition-specific transfer terms before uninstalling or installing.
- Install Office on the new computer from the account or deployment channel that lists the product.
- Open an Office application and complete activation with the correct identity.
- Verify the activation status under File > Account.
- Remove the old installation when the license requires a single active copy.
- Use Microsoft’s activation support flow—or your organization’s IT team—when the account, transfer interval, hardware failure, or phone-activation path prevents completion.
