Losing a job in Finland does not normally cancel a work-based residence permit immediately. Depending on your permit category and how long you held it, the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) generally gives you three or six months to find qualifying new employment. That protection period does not renew or extend your permit: if the card or decision expires first, you must leave Finland by the expiry date unless you have another lawful basis to stay.
You may be able to start with a new employer without applying for a new permit when the job remains in the same field under a valid employed-person permit (TTOL). A move to a different field usually requires a new permit before work starts, although an annually updated national labour-shortage exception can apply. The exact answer depends on the permit decision, end date of employment, proposed duties, and expiry date.
What “transferring” your Finnish permit actually means
Finland does not use one universal transfer procedure for every work-based residence permit. In practice, three separate questions determine what you can do:
- How long may you remain in Finland after the employment ends?
- Can your existing permit cover the proposed job with another employer?
- Do you need to submit a new residence-permit application before beginning that job?
Migri’s official end-of-employment guidance, checked on 13 October 2026, calls the post-termination allowance a protection period: “when the employment relationship that was the basis for your residence permit ends, you will have either 3 or 6 months to find a new job.” The period protects you from withdrawal proceedings based solely on the job ending; it is not an extension of the residence permit.

How long can you stay after the job ends?
First identify the exact permit category printed in your decision or card. The following summary reflects Migri’s category guidance; unusual permit conditions can change the result.

The table is not a substitute for reading your permit decision. Seasonal-work permits, permits tied to a specific task or employer, older permits issued before 23 February 2023, family-based permits, student permits and other categories can follow different rules.
Protection period versus permit validity
Use the earlier of two dates: the end of your applicable three- or six-month protection period, or the expiry date of your residence permit. For example, if a three-month protection period would end in September but your permit expires in July, you cannot remain until September on that permit. Migri says you must leave Finland at the latest when the permit expires if you have not found qualifying work and have no other legal residence ground.

Step 1: Read your permit decision and record the critical dates
- Find the category. Use the wording in the residence-permit decision, not a job title or an informal description such as “work visa.” Determine whether it is TTOL, specialist, EU Blue Card, intra-corporate transfer, seasonal, family-based or another category.
- Record the expiry date. The date on the card or decision is the outer limit for staying under that permit.
- Record when employment actually ended. Use the final day of the employment relationship, including any notice period that legally kept the contract active. Do not automatically use the day you stopped attending the workplace.
- Check special conditions. Look for an employer, occupation, task, sector or other restriction in the decision. A permit limited to a named employer or task may not allow the same flexibility as a general TTOL permit.
Keep the termination letter, employment contract, payslips and communications about the final working day. They can help establish the dates if Migri asks for evidence.
Step 2: Determine whether the new job is covered
Same field under a valid TTOL permit
Migri generally allows a person with a valid employed-person permit to change employers without a new permit when the new job remains in the same field. “Same field” concerns the work and occupational area, not merely whether the employer operates in the same city or has a similar-sounding company name. Compare the actual duties, required qualifications and sector with the work described in your permit decision.

Do not start simply because the new employer uses a similar job title. If the duties move outside the permitted field, obtain confirmation of the applicable rule before working.
A different field
A different field generally requires a new residence permit before you begin that work. The protection period lets you look for employment; it does not itself authorize work in an unrelated occupation. Apply under the permit category that matches the new job and wait for the required approval unless a specific exception applies.

Migri identifies an exception for fields on Finland’s national labour-shortage list. The list is updated yearly, so a field that qualified in one year may not qualify later. Verify the current list at the time of the job change and retain evidence of which occupation or field is listed. Do not treat a general labour shortage in a company or region as proof that your occupation qualifies.
Permits with narrower conditions
A permit tied to a named employer, a particular assignment or a specific task can impose stricter limits. Seasonal permits and some permits issued before 23 February 2023 may also have additional restrictions. For an intra-corporate transfer, the key question may be whether the new assignment remains within the approved transfer arrangement rather than whether it is merely in the same broad industry.
Step 3: Choose the correct route for the new employment

If you cannot clearly classify the new role, ask Migri or a qualified Finnish immigration lawyer before the first working day. Starting unauthorized work can create problems for the new application and future residence status.

Step 4: Check the former employer’s notification duty
For qualifying non-EU/EEA employment, the employer generally must notify Migri when the work-based employment ends prematurely. Migri’s employer guidance states that the notification is due within two weeks. A fixed-term employment relationship ending on the date originally agreed is an exception described by Migri, along with other stated exceptions.

A notification does not itself cancel your permit automatically. Migri may consider withdrawal after receiving information that the employment ended, but the applicable three- or six-month protection period prevents withdrawal proceedings on that basis during the protected period.
Ask the former employer whether it submitted the notification and when. Keep the answer in writing, but do not delay your own job search while waiting for confirmation. If you believe the employer reported an incorrect end date or described a normal fixed-term ending as an early termination, gather the contract and termination documents and contact Migri.
Step 5: Apply when a new permit is required
The exact application type depends on the new role: an employed-person permit, specialist permit, EU Blue Card, seasonal permit or another category may apply. The following workflow avoids the most common timing mistakes:
- Match the job to a permit category. Compare duties, salary, qualifications, working hours and employer details with the category requirements.
- Submit the application before the current permit expires. An application does not automatically make an otherwise unauthorized job lawful, so follow the work-right instructions for that category.
- Provide complete evidence. Include the new employment contract or binding offer, job description, salary information, passport and any documents requested for the category.
- State the employment timeline accurately. Include the former job’s end date and explain whether the new job is in the same field, a labour-shortage field or a different occupation.
- Wait for the decision when prior authorization is required. Do not rely on the fact that you were previously allowed to work in Finland; work rights attach to the current permit conditions.
Because processing requirements and labour-shortage classifications can change, check the current Migri instructions immediately before filing.

What happens if you do not find work in time?
If the applicable protection period ends without qualifying new employment, and no other lawful residence ground applies, Migri may consider withdrawing the work-based permit. Migri’s general residence-permit FAQ also describes a possible withdrawal process after three months of unemployment when work-based grounds no longer exist. Read that general statement together with the category-specific protection-period rules: the precise timing depends on your permit type and circumstances.
In every case, the permit expiry date remains decisive. If it arrives first, you must leave Finland at the latest on that date unless another lawful basis permits you to stay. Remaining while an application is pending is not something to infer from the former work permit; confirm the effect of the specific application and your status with Migri.
Could another residence basis let you stay?
Loss of employment does not necessarily eliminate every possible basis for residence. Migri gives family ties and studies as examples of independent grounds. Other possibilities may exist under Finnish law, but each has its own eligibility rules and application procedure.
- Identify the independent basis before the work permit expires.
- Check whether a new application is required and whether you may remain in Finland while it is processed.
- Do not work under the old permit beyond its conditions while waiting for a decision on another basis.
- Keep evidence supporting the relationship, study place or other qualifying circumstance.
A family or study connection does not automatically convert a work permit. Treat it as a separate residence question and obtain category-specific instructions.

Example 1: TTOL held for 18 months, same field
An employee’s TTOL permit has been valid for 18 months when the job ends. Migri’s listed protection period for an employed-person permit held less than two years is three months. The employee finds a role with another employer in the same field while the permit is still valid. The usual route is to document that the duties remain in the authorized field and continue under the existing permit, subject to its expiry date and any special conditions.

Example 2: TTOL held for 18 months, different field
The same employee receives an offer in a different occupation. The three-month period provides time to search, but it does not generally authorize the new occupation. A new permit is normally needed before that work begins unless the occupation is covered by the current national labour-shortage exception.
Example 3: Six-month category, permit expiring sooner
A specialist’s job ends and the category qualifies for six months of protection, but the residence card expires in four months. The person cannot use the full six months under that card. The expiry date arrives first, so the person must secure another lawful basis or leave by then.
Example 4: Fixed-term contract ends as agreed
A fixed-term contract reaches its agreed end date. Migri describes this situation as an exception to the employer’s premature-termination notification duty. The worker should still calculate the applicable protection period, verify the permit conditions and begin searching immediately; the exception does not extend the permit expiry date.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming cancellation is immediate. The job ending is not, by itself, automatic same-day cancellation. Calculate the applicable protection period and expiry date.
- Treating protection as an extension. It is time to find qualifying employment, not extra validity after the card expires.
- Confusing employer change with field change. A new employer in the same field may be covered; a new occupation generally is not.
- Using an old labour-shortage list. The national list is updated yearly. Verify the current version.
- Ignoring permit-specific restrictions. Seasonal, task-specific, employer-specific, older and transfer permits can differ from ordinary TTOL rules.
- Starting before approval. If the new field requires a permit, wait for the decision before beginning work.
- Waiting until expiry. A job search, new application or alternative residence basis should be assessed well before the expiry date.
- Assuming an application guarantees a right to stay. Confirm the legal effect of the particular application with Migri.
Decision checklist
Use this checklist on the day your employment ends:
- Write down the final employment date and permit expiry date.
- Read the permit decision and identify the exact category.
- Calculate whether the category gives three or six months of protection.
- Compare the proposed job’s actual duties with the current authorized field.
- Check the current national labour-shortage list if the role is different.
- Ask whether the former employer filed any required premature-termination notification within two weeks.
- Apply for a new permit before starting work if the current permit does not cover the role.
- Check family, study or another independent residence basis if employment may not be found in time.
- Contact Migri or qualified Finnish immigration counsel when the category, dates or work rights are uncertain.
When to get individual advice
Official guidance cannot resolve every fact pattern from a job title alone. Obtain individual advice promptly if your permit names an employer or task, the employment ended during a dispute or notice period, your new role crosses occupational fields, your permit was issued before 23 February 2023, you hold a seasonal or intra-corporate-transfer permit, or withdrawal correspondence has arrived.
Use Migri’s current instructions as the controlling source. Immigration rules, application requirements and the labour-shortage list can change, so re-check them before accepting work or relying on a protection-period calculation.
