Yes—you can usually transfer a domain without taking the website or email offline. A registrar transfer changes who sponsors the registration; it does not require moving your hosting or authoritative DNS. Keep the current nameservers, DNS zone, DNSSEC configuration, and hosting active while the transfer runs. Back up the zone, confirm the domain is eligible, unlock it, obtain the Auth-Code, start the request at the gaining registrar, approve the required messages, and verify service after completion.

The main risk is accidentally combining two separate projects: changing registrars and changing DNS. Treat them as independent operations. Move the registration first, then plan any DNS migration as a separately tested change.

What a registrar transfer changes—and what it does not

A registrar is the company that sponsors your domain registration and provides the management interface for contacts, renewal, transfer locks, and authorization codes. A transfer moves that sponsorship from the losing registrar to the gaining registrar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your website and email normally continue to use the same hosting servers because visitors follow the domain’s authoritative nameservers, not the registrar’s brand. If those nameservers remain unchanged, the existing DNS provider continues answering for the domain while the registration changes hands.

Operation What changes Downtime risk when performed alone
Registrar transfer The registrar of record, management panel, billing and renewal controls Usually low if nameservers and DNSSEC remain correct
Nameserver change The DNS service that answers for the domain Potentially high if records are missing, incorrect or not propagated
Hosting migration The servers running the website or applications Potentially high unless traffic is tested and cut over carefully
DNS-zone migration The location and contents of A, AAAA, MX, TXT and other records Potentially high for web, mail and verification services

During a simple registrar transfer, leave the second, third and fourth operations alone. A new registrar may display a DNS editor, but do not use it to recreate records unless you are deliberately moving DNS and have a separate migration plan.

Why websites sometimes appear to go down during a transfer

The transfer itself does not normally change the IP address returned for your web host. Outages usually come from an associated mistake: nameservers are replaced, a DNS zone is not copied, DNSSEC records no longer match, a hosting account expires, or a domain is allowed to expire while the transfer is pending.

  • Nameserver replacement: The new registrar may offer its own default DNS service. Accepting that default can point the domain to an empty zone.
  • Incomplete record copy: Missing MX, TXT, SPF, DKIM, DMARC or verification records can stop mail delivery or break third-party services even when the website loads.
  • DNSSEC mismatch: A changed DS record or an incorrectly re-entered DNSSEC configuration can make validating resolvers return a failure.
  • Expiration or redemption: A domain that expires during the process can enter a restricted state in which normal transfer steps no longer apply.
  • Contact-access failure: Approval messages sent to an inaccessible registered-name holder or administrative contact can leave the request waiting or rejected.

Prepare before you request the transfer

1. Inventory the domain’s current services

Record the exact domain name, current registrar, expiration date shown in the account, hosting provider, authoritative nameservers and DNSSEC status. Identify every service that depends on the name, including the main website, subdomains, APIs, VPNs, transactional mail, mailbox providers, analytics, payment callbacks and domain-verification records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Export the authoritative DNS zone if your DNS provider supports an export. Otherwise create a written copy of every record, including its type, host, value, priority, port, weight, target, TTL and any quoting or formatting requirements. At minimum capture:

  • A and AAAA records for web and application servers
  • CNAME records for aliases and hosted services
  • MX records and their priorities for inbound mail
  • TXT records, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC and ownership-verification strings
  • CAA, SRV, NS and other records used by your applications
  • DNSSEC DS, key-tag, algorithm and digest information, if DNSSEC is enabled

Confirm where authoritative DNS is hosted and keep that service paid and active. The registrar account and the DNS account may be different companies; transferring the registration does not transfer the DNS zone.

2. Check transfer eligibility

Review the current registrar’s status page for transfer locks and the registry’s rules for the relevant top-level domain. A 60-day Change of Registrant lock can block a transfer. A recent transfer, a registry-specific lock, an expiration or redemption state, or another policy restriction can also make the domain ineligible. Exact rules vary by TLD and registrar, so resolve the status shown for this specific name before paying for a transfer.

Do not wait until the final days before expiration. A pending transfer does not remove the need to renew or recover a domain that is approaching an expiration or redemption deadline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Confirm that an authorized person can approve the move

Check the registered name holder and administrative contact details in the current registrar’s account. The person who initiates or authorizes the transfer must be the holder, the administrative contact, or someone explicitly authorized by them under the applicable policy. Make sure those contacts can receive email and that messages from both registrars will not be filtered.

Auth-Code, EPP code and transfer locks

An Auth-Code—also called an Authorization Code, AuthInfo Code, EPP code or transfer code—is generated by the current registrar to help identify the domain name holder. A gTLD transfer normally requires this code.

Look in the current registrar’s domain-management panel for labels such as Transfer out, Authorization code, EPP code or Get code. Some registrars display it immediately; others send it to the holder or administrative contact. ICANN requires the current registrar to provide the Auth-Code through its panel or within five calendar days after a request. Save the code exactly as issued, respecting capitalization and punctuation, and do not post it publicly.

Remove the registrar lock before submitting the request. In a registry lookup or registrar panel, the lock is often represented by the status clientTransferProhibited. Unlocking does not move the domain or alter DNS; it only permits an eligible transfer request to proceed. You can re-enable the lock after completion.

Eight-step no-downtime transfer workflow

  1. Back up the zone and document dependencies. Export or record A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, CAA, SRV and verification records. Note the authoritative nameservers and whether DNSSEC is enabled. Keep hosting and DNS subscriptions active.
  2. Resolve eligibility issues. Check for a Change of Registrant lock, recent-transfer restriction, registry lock, expiration, redemption or other TLD-specific block. If the account shows a lock, identify its reason and the date on which it can be removed.
  3. Verify contact access. Confirm that the registered-name holder or authorized administrative contact can receive approval emails. Update an inaccessible address before starting, observing any contact-change restrictions shown by the registrar.
  4. Unlock the domain and request the Auth-Code. Turn off the transfer lock, often labelled Registrar lock or Domain lock, then request the code. If it is not displayed, use the registrar’s support channel and retain the request time; the five-calendar-day delivery requirement applies to the current registrar.
  5. Open the transfer at the gaining registrar. Use the new registrar’s transfer page, enter the exact domain and Auth-Code, and pay any transfer fee shown for that TLD. The gaining registrar is the normal starting point for the request.
  6. Complete authorization. Follow the gaining registrar’s confirmation steps and approve any message sent to the authorized contact. Some transfers can be approved in the current registrar’s panel as well. Do not click cancellation or denial links unless you intend to stop the move.
  7. Keep nameservers and DNSSEC unchanged. Do not replace the current nameservers during the pending period. In the gaining registrar’s interface, verify that the existing nameservers are retained or re-entered exactly and that the DNSSEC state is preserved correctly. If the new registrar asks whether to use its DNS service, choose the option that keeps the existing authoritative service unless a planned DNS migration is underway.
  8. Monitor, verify and document. Watch both registrar accounts and approval emails. When the transfer completes, query the authoritative nameservers, test the website over HTTPS, send and receive mail, check important subdomains and retain the completion notice. Re-enable the transfer lock if desired and save the new registrar’s renewal, recovery and contact information.

What to monitor while the request is pending

There is no single completion time that applies to every registrar and TLD. ICANN’s reviewed policy pages define authorization and lock rules but do not publish a universal duration. A request may finish after the required approvals or remain pending while a registrar or registry applies its procedures.

Check the transfer status in both accounts at least once per day during the move. Useful status wording includes pending transfer, awaiting approval, client pending, approved, rejected and completed. Capture screenshots or confirmation numbers so support can trace the request if the status changes unexpectedly.

Keep the current DNS provider, hosting account, mail service and DNSSEC configuration funded and untouched. A transfer does not suspend those services, but an unpaid DNS or hosting subscription can create an outage that looks like a registrar problem.

Verify service after the transfer completes

Verification should test the authoritative data and the applications that depend on it, not just whether the registrar dashboard says “completed.” Perform checks from more than one network or resolver where possible.

Nameserver and DNS checks

  • Use a DNS diagnostic tool or commands such as dig NS example.com or nslookup -type=NS example.com to confirm that the intended nameservers answer.
  • Query the web records with dig A example.com and dig AAAA example.com, and test important CNAMEs.
  • Query MX and TXT records to confirm mail routing, SPF, DKIM, DMARC and service-verification data remain present.
  • If DNSSEC is enabled, validate the chain with a DNSSEC-aware checker and confirm that the DS information at the registry matches the active keys at the DNS provider.

Application checks

  • Open the site at the apex domain and key subdomains over HTTPS. Confirm the certificate is valid and that redirects, login, forms and checkout or API calls work.
  • Send a test message to the domain and reply from a mailbox on the domain. Check both inbound and outbound delivery, including messages that rely on SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
  • Test integrations that use callback URLs, webhooks, verification records, custom subdomains or nonstandard ports.
  • Review monitoring, server logs and uptime alerts for resolver-specific failures rather than relying on one browser session.

Only after these checks pass should you consider a separate nameserver or hosting change. Document the verified nameservers, DNSSEC state and new registrar contacts for the next administrator.

Troubleshooting common failures

The transfer form rejects the Auth-Code

Copy the code again without extra spaces and confirm that it belongs to the exact domain, not a different name in the account. If the code has been regenerated, use the newest one. Check that the domain is unlocked and eligible, then ask the current registrar to issue a fresh code if the panel continues to reject it.

The transfer is waiting for approval

Check the authorized contact’s inbox, spam folder and forwarding rules, then inspect both registrar panels for an approval action. Verify that the message was sent to the current registered-name holder or administrative contact rather than an obsolete address. If the registrar has not supplied the code or approval path within the applicable policy window, open a support case and provide the domain, request date and account verification details.

The domain is marked locked

Read the exact status and the registrar’s explanation. A routine transfer lock can be removed in the domain panel, while a Change of Registrant lock, recent-transfer restriction, registry lock or expiration state may require waiting or a different recovery procedure. Do not repeatedly submit transfers without resolving the underlying status; each attempt can create confusion about which request is active.

The website works for some people but not others

Compare authoritative NS, A and AAAA answers from several resolvers. If the authoritative nameservers changed, restore the intended nameservers and DNS zone before investigating application code. If authoritative answers are correct, check for stale or inconsistent records at a secondary DNS provider, an incorrect IPv6 address, DNSSEC validation errors or a resolver-specific cache.

Email stopped while the website still loads

Inspect MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records at the authoritative DNS service. A registrar transfer does not require changing these records, so a missing or altered mail record usually indicates an accidental DNS edit or an expired DNS service. Restore the backed-up values and retest from an external mailbox.

DNSSEC validation fails after completion

Compare the DS record held at the registry with the active DNSSEC keys at the authoritative provider. A mismatch can cause validating resolvers to treat the domain as bogus even though unsigned lookups appear normal. Correct the DS or key configuration using the DNS provider’s documented rollover procedure; avoid disabling DNSSEC blindly if a controlled repair is possible.

How to evaluate the gaining registrar

Price alone does not determine whether a transfer is safe. Compare the following items for the exact TLD and edition of service you need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Questions to ask
Transfer and renewal pricing What transfer fee is displayed now, and what recurring renewal price will apply afterward? Are taxes or optional services shown separately?
TLD support Does the registrar support this country-code or generic TLD, and does it follow the registry’s transfer rules?
Auth-Code delivery Is the code visible in the panel, delivered through a controlled support process, and obtainable within the required five-calendar-day window?
Nameserver and DNSSEC handling Does the transfer flow retain existing nameservers and clearly show whether DNSSEC data will be preserved or must be re-entered?
Approval and lock controls Can you see pending requests, cancel an unintended transfer and re-enable the lock after completion?
Privacy and contact data How are registrant, administrative and technical contacts displayed, protected and updated for the relevant TLD?
Support quality Can support explain registry status codes, eligibility restrictions and DNSSEC issues rather than only resubmitting the form?

Do not assume that every registrar uses the same labels or offers the same approval options. The gaining registrar’s transfer page and the registry’s rules for your TLD control the actual process.

Policy rights and limits

ICANN states that transferring a domain between registrars is a registrant right when the gaining registrar’s process meets the policy’s minimum standards and no ICANN or registry policy prohibits the move. That right does not override a valid lock, an unresolved contact-change restriction, a recent-transfer rule, an expiration or redemption procedure, or requirements specific to a country-code TLD.

The ICANN Transfer Policy page identifies an update dated 21 February 2024, with implementation no later than 21 August 2025. Applicability can depend on how a particular registrar and registry implement the policy, so use the current status and instructions shown for your domain rather than assuming that every TLD behaves like a gTLD.

Aftercare checklist

  • Confirm the new registrar, expiration information and renewal settings.
  • Store the transfer confirmation and the final Auth-Code request history in your domain records.
  • Re-enable the transfer lock if you do not expect another move soon.
  • Verify recovery email addresses, multifactor authentication and delegated account users.
  • Keep the DNS provider and hosting subscription active until you intentionally migrate them.
  • Schedule a separate, documented DNS or hosting migration if one is still required; test it before changing nameservers.

Quick decision: should you transfer now?

Proceed when the domain is eligible, the authorized contact is reachable, the DNS zone is backed up, the current nameservers and DNSSEC state are documented, and both the old DNS service and hosting are paid through the expected transfer period. Delay the move if the domain is near expiration or redemption, a contact-change lock is active, DNSSEC is already failing, or you cannot obtain the Auth-Code and approval messages. Fix those conditions first; changing registrars while they are unresolved adds risk without solving the underlying problem.
