Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
Use Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 with Forge 1.18.2. Install Forge and launch it once, then place the Isle of Berk mod and the matching Forge build of GeckoLib in a clean mods folder. Test a new creative world before opening a survival save. If you add Archipelago Additions, install its exact dependencies and modified configuration files at the required point in the first-load process; it will not work with OptiFine.
What the Isle of Berk modpack is
Isle of Berk is a How to Train Your Dragon-themed Minecraft Java experience built around survival, exploration and dragon riding. The documented baseline is Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 and Forge 1.18.2. The core pack presents Berk as a survival world where you gather resources, hunt, follow a guided questline and work toward finding and taming a first dragon. It is a Java-only project; Bedrock Edition and a Fabric installation are not supported by the installation guide.

Two commonly encountered expansions take the pack in different directions. Archipelago Additions concentrates on a very large collection of franchise dragons, variants, items and world content. Isle of Berk Expanded adds a broader adventure framework with terrain generation, villages, ships, merchants, dungeons, quests and multiplayer-oriented features. Both still center on the 1.18.2 Forge ecosystem, so installing them as if they were modern 1.20 or Fabric mods will produce an unusable profile.
Requirements and a safe starting point
Software and edition
- A legally purchased, launchable copy of Minecraft Java Edition for PC.
- Minecraft 1.18.2 selected in the launcher.
- Forge for Minecraft 1.18.2. The archive guide identifies Forge, not Fabric, as the expected loader.
- Java 17. Minecraft 1.18.2 expects this runtime according to the installation guide.
- The Isle of Berk jar and the Forge 1.18.2 build of GeckoLib.
Use a separate launcher profile and, preferably, a separate game directory while you are diagnosing problems. This prevents unrelated mods, old configuration files and existing worlds from hiding a load-order mistake. Keep a backup of any survival world before changing the mod list or its configuration.

Hardware planning
Dragon models, animated entities, custom terrain and large structure lists can make this pack heavier than an ordinary vanilla 1.18.2 world. Do not allocate all of your computer’s memory to Minecraft; leave enough for the operating system and graphics software. Expanded publishes the following minimum and recommended allocations:
| Use case | Minimum RAM listed by Expanded | Recommended RAM listed by Expanded |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | 5 GB | 8 GB |
| Client connecting to a server | 4 GB | 6 GB |
| Dedicated server | 4 GB | 10 GB |
These figures are the pack’s published guidance in 2026, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate. World-generation spikes, view distance, other installed mods and the number of loaded dragons all affect actual usage.
Install the core Isle of Berk pack
- Confirm the edition and version. In the official launcher, create or select a profile for Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 and launch it once. Close the game at the title screen. This confirms that the account can run Java 1.18.2 and creates the required directory structure.
- Install Forge 1.18.2. Run the Forge installer, select the client installation and point it at the same game directory used by the 1.18.2 profile. Launch the new Forge profile once, wait for the main menu, then exit. A first launch creates the Forge folders and default files.
- Open the top-level mods folder. In the game directory, use
modsat the same level asconfigandsaves. Create it if Forge did not create it automatically. - Copy the two required jars. Put the Isle of Berk mod jar and the GeckoLib jar built for Forge 1.18.2 directly in
mods. Do not unzip either file, put a jar inside another archive, or create an extra nestedmodsfolder. - Launch and inspect the Mods screen. Start the Forge profile and open the in-game Mods list. Both Isle of Berk and GeckoLib should appear, with version strings matching the 1.18.2 environment. A missing GeckoLib entry or a dependency warning means the library is absent, for the wrong loader or for another Minecraft version.
- Run a disposable test world. Create a fresh creative world. Check that textures load, entities animate, the world reaches the game without a Forge error banner and the basic blocks and items are visible. Only after this test should you copy or open a survival save.
The clean-world test is important because a profile can reach the title screen while still failing when a structure, entity model or world-generation feature is first used. Keep the test world separate from your long-term save.

Adding Archipelago Additions
Archipelago Additions is an expansion for Isle of Berk that adds 48 new dragon species and more than 1,000 dragon variants, along with franchise items, armor, weapons, blocks, plants, entities, structures, dragon abilities and an Isle of Berk-themed resource pack. Its CurseForge listing showed 1,606,801 downloads in 2026; that total is time-sensitive and may change.
Required versions
The expansion’s published dependency set is exact. Use Forge 40.2.10 or newer, GeckoLib 1.18.2-3.0.46, Isle of Berk 1.18.2-1.2.0, Isle of Berk Variant Loader 1.18.2-2.5.6 and Isle of Berk Addons 1.18.2-1.1d. A different Minecraft major version, loader or dependency build can fail during Forge’s scanning phase even if the jar names look similar.
Correct load order for the modified configs
- Finish the clean Forge and core-mod installation described above.
- Install Archipelago Additions and every required dependency in the same top-level
modsfolder. Follow any file-specific instructions supplied with the expansion. - Launch the profile once and allow the pack to reach the title screen. This first load creates the configuration files and confirms that the dependency graph is recognized.
- Exit the game. Install the modified configuration files supplied for Archipelago Additions, replacing the corresponding generated files when instructed.
- Launch again and create the world only after those configs are in place. The new dragons will not spawn in a world made before the required configs were installed.
Archipelago Additions is incompatible with OptiFine. Remove OptiFine from this profile rather than trying to force it alongside the expansion. If you need a performance change, adjust Minecraft’s render distance and other in-game settings first, then test one change at a time.

What Isle of Berk Expanded adds
Isle of Berk Expanded uses rugged Terralith terrain and combines dragon raising with a larger adventure loop. Its feature list includes ruins, Viking villages, dragon eggs and growth from hatchlings to mature dragons, elemental abilities, building, ships, merchants, dungeons, quests and multiplayer support. The listing states more than 50 dragon species and more than 200 dragon variations. CurseForge showed 32,405 downloads in 2026, another figure that can change as the project receives updates.
Expanded also supplies a server pack, which is useful when the client and server need the same world-generation and gameplay files. Treat the server as a matching installation rather than assuming that a client-only jar list will be sufficient. The server should run Forge 1.18.2, use the same mod and dependency versions as the connecting clients, and have its own backup and test world.
Archipelago Additions or Expanded?
| Decision factor | Archipelago Additions | Isle of Berk Expanded |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Expansion for the core Isle of Berk mod | Broader adventure and progression pack |
| Documented version family | Minecraft Java 1.18.2 with Forge; requires the listed dependency builds | Minecraft Java 1.18.2 with Forge; use its supplied client/server files |
| Dragon content | 48 new species and over 1,000 variants across the pack | Over 50 species and over 200 variations |
| Other content | Franchise items, armor, weapons, blocks, plants, entities, structures, abilities and themed resources | Terralith terrain, ruins, villages, eggs, growth, building, ships, merchants, dungeons and quests |
| Progression emphasis | Expands the collection and variety of dragons and related content | Exploration, construction, quests, raising dragons and multiplayer adventures |
| Memory guidance | No separate RAM figures are stated in the listing summarized here | 5 GB minimum/8 GB recommended single-player; 4 GB/6 GB client; 4 GB/10 GB server |
| Important compatibility note | Modified configs must be installed after first load and before world creation; OptiFine is incompatible | Use the matching Forge server and client files when hosting multiplayer |
Choose Archipelago Additions if the priority is the largest documented dragon roster and an extensive set of franchise-themed additions. Choose Expanded if you want terrain variety, ships, settlements, dungeons, a quest-driven adventure and a documented server pack. Do not combine both automatically: first check their dependency and version requirements in a disposable profile, because the two projects can add overlapping entities, registries or configuration entries.

Finding, taming and riding dragons
Follow the intended progression
The core pack is designed to guide a new player through survival tasks before the first dragon is tamed. Start in a fresh world, gather basic resources and use the questline as an onboarding checklist. Quests are the safest way to discover which materials and actions the installed version expects, especially when an expansion changes available eggs, structures or equipment.
Locate a dragon or egg
World generation and the installed expansion determine where dragons, nests and eggs appear. Explore the generated terrain and structures rather than assuming that a dragon will spawn near the initial position. Expanded specifically includes dragon eggs and growth stages; Archipelago changes the available species and variants. If a species you expect is absent, verify that its mod and configuration loaded before rebuilding the world.
Raise and tame
When you find an egg or a wild dragon, use the interaction prompts and quest instructions supplied by your installed pack. Expanded describes raising dragons from hatchlings to mature “sky lords” and mastering elemental abilities. The exact items, feeding rules and interaction keys can vary with the pack version and configuration, so do not substitute a vanilla Minecraft taming recipe unless the in-game guide calls for it.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Riding and abilities
After a dragon accepts you, check its entity screen and the pack’s controls before flying into a dangerous area. Practice mounting, dismounting and ability activation in a fenced or otherwise safe location. Animated models, variant abilities and resource-pack assets are among the features that should be validated in the creative test world. If the model is invisible or the animation is frozen, stop and resolve the GeckoLib or resource-loading problem instead of saving the affected world.

- Choose one exact pack and version set. Record the Minecraft, Forge, Isle of Berk, GeckoLib and expansion versions.
- Install the matching Forge server files in a dedicated server directory. Expanded supplies a server pack; use it rather than assembling an unrelated client-only collection.
- Start the server once, accept the required Minecraft EULA in the generated file, then stop it cleanly. This creates the configuration and world folders.
- Apply the same mod jars and configuration files to the server that the pack requires. For Archipelago, complete the first-load and modified-config sequence before creating the permanent world.
- Allocate memory appropriate to the player count and world size. Expanded lists 4 GB as a server minimum and 10 GB as a recommendation; leave additional system memory available.
- Have every player install the same client-side versions and test with a new account or temporary world before importing a valuable save.
- Back up the server’s world,
configdirectory and mod list before updates. Never update one side of a multiplayer installation while leaving the other on an old registry set.
When a player is rejected for a missing mod or receives mismatched registry errors, compare the actual filenames and version strings on the server and client rather than reinstalling Java blindly.
Troubleshoot crashes and missing content
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Forge refuses to load a dependency | GeckoLib is missing, for Fabric, or for a different Minecraft version | Remove the incorrect jar and install the Forge 1.18.2 build. For Archipelago, use GeckoLib 1.18.2-3.0.46. |
| The profile reaches the menu but crashes when a world opens | Conflicting mods, stale configs or a world made before required configs were installed | Use a dedicated profile, move unrelated jars out, regenerate only the affected configs and test a new world. Archipelago worlds require its modified configs before creation. |
| New Archipelago dragons never appear | The supplied modified configuration files were not installed at the correct time | Exit the game, apply the supplied configs after the first successful load, then create a new test world. |
| OptiFine causes a crash or broken rendering | Archipelago Additions is incompatible with OptiFine | Remove OptiFine from the Archipelago profile and retest with standard Forge rendering settings. |
| Forge shows no Isle of Berk entry | Jars were nested, unzipped, placed in the wrong directory or copied to another game instance | Put the untouched jars directly in the active profile’s top-level mods folder and verify the launcher game directory. |
| Textures, models or animations are missing | Wrong GeckoLib build, incomplete resource files or a client/server version mismatch | Confirm the version strings in the Mods screen, remove duplicate jars and retest in a clean creative world. |
| Out-of-memory errors or severe stutter | Insufficient allocation for terrain, entities or server load | Use Expanded’s RAM guidance as a starting point, lower render and simulation distance, close other applications and test before adding further mods. |
| Players cannot join a server | Forge, mod or config versions differ between client and server | Compare the complete mod filenames and configuration set; do not assume that two similarly named files are interchangeable. |
| Java errors appear before Forge starts | The launcher is using a Java runtime other than the Java 17 expected by 1.18.2 | Configure the 1.18.2 profile to use Java 17, restart the launcher and test the clean Forge profile again. |
Use logs without guessing
When a crash persists, reproduce it in the dedicated profile and note whether it occurs during startup, world creation or entity interaction. That timing narrows the search: startup failures usually indicate loader or dependency problems, world-creation failures often involve generation or config state, and a crash near a particular dragon points to an entity, model or resource conflict. Keep the first error and the listed mod name from the crash report; removing random jars without recording each change makes the cause harder to isolate.
Performance and world-safety practices
- Generate and explore a test world before committing to a long-term seed. Large terrain and structure systems can create heavy one-time generation work.
- Start with moderate render and simulation distances. Increase them only after the pack remains stable while flying or visiting villages and dungeons.
- Change one variable at a time: memory allocation, view distance, resource pack or an additional mod. This keeps improvements measurable and makes rollback possible.
- Keep a zipped backup of the world before adding an expansion, changing configs or updating Forge.
- Never copy a world from one mod list to another without a backup. Removing registered blocks, entities or dimensions can make saved chunks unloadable.
- For multiplayer, schedule backups while no one is editing the world and preserve the server’s exact mod and config manifest with each backup.
Version and download-count caveat
The figures above reflect project listings available in 2026. CurseForge download totals, file revisions, dependency requirements, RAM recommendations and hosting details can change. Before installing, read the current file page for the exact Minecraft and Forge build, then update the versions in your client and server as one controlled change. The 1.18.2 baseline remains the documented compatibility target for the installation workflow described here.
