In Lionhead Studios’ original 2001 PC game Black & White, your Creature learns from consequences rather than a fixed command list. Watch what it does, decide whether you want that behavior repeated, then use praise to reinforce it or punishment to discourage it. Food and sleep are part of the same care loop: establish the habits you want, provide opportunities to practice them, and respond consistently.
This guide covers the original game, not Black & White 2 or the Creature Isle expansion as a separate ruleset. The advice describes game mechanics and is not real-animal training or veterinary guidance.
What your Creature is actually learning
The Creature is a semi-autonomous game character. It can act without waiting for a perfectly scripted order, and its tendencies develop in response to what you repeatedly do around it. Historical coverage of the game describes training across practical and spectacular tasks, including carrying supplies, impressing villagers, dancing, fighting and casting miracles. You do not teach all of these by entering a permanent command queue. You shape a preference through repeated situations and feedback.
The most useful mental model is a three-part loop:
- Observe: notice the exact action you want to change, including what happened immediately before it.
- Create or recognize an opportunity: let the Creature encounter the food, task, villager or situation in which the behavior can occur.
- Respond consistently: praise the action you want more often, or punish the action you want less often.
Timing and consistency matter more than dramatic one-off reactions. If you punish a behavior on one occasion and reward it on another, the Creature receives a mixed signal and may keep experimenting instead of settling into the habit you intended.

Establish a manageable training routine
Training works better when you can tell which action caused your response. Start with one target behavior, keep distractions low, and watch the Creature long enough to see a pattern. A short, repeatable routine is more useful than trying to correct every mistake at once.
Choose one target at a time
Decide whether your immediate goal is a care habit, such as eating a preferred food or sleeping, or a more complex task, such as carrying supplies. State the goal in observable terms: “eat this food when hungry” is clearer than “be good.” A specific goal lets you identify the moment that deserves praise or discouragement.
Make the desired action possible
Place the relevant opportunity in the Creature’s environment. For feeding, that means making the food you want it to learn about available. For a work task, allow the Creature to encounter the object or situation rather than expecting a behavior it has never had a chance to perform. The Creature cannot learn a preference from an action it never gets to attempt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMark success immediately
When the Creature performs the desired action, use the game’s praise interaction promptly. The closer your response is to the action, the easier it is to associate the consequence with the behavior you mean to shape. Continue praising successful repetitions instead of assuming one response permanently teaches the habit.
Discourage the specific unwanted action
If the Creature performs an action you want to reduce, use punishment for that action and then return to observation. Do not punish an unrelated behavior that happened nearby. Broad, unpredictable punishment can make it difficult to tell what the Creature is supposed to change.
Repeat across ordinary play
Once a behavior appears reliable in one situation, watch for it elsewhere. A learned tendency may need reinforcement when the context changes. The game’s Creature is developing in response to your conduct, not merely memorizing a single isolated scene.

Care basics: food, sleep and observation
An archived 2001 walkthrough treats feeding and sleeping as core Creature routines. They are not optional cosmetic details; they are part of looking after the character while you teach more advanced behaviors.

Begin by deciding which available food you want the Creature to prefer. Offer that food when the Creature is in a situation where eating is likely, then praise the correct choice as soon as it happens. If it chooses a different food, respond to that specific choice rather than punishing the Creature for being hungry.
Repeat the same pattern over normal play. A single feeding does not establish a universal rule, and the historical sources do not provide a guaranteed schedule, quantity or numerical threshold that applies to every game state. Treat the habit as something you are reinforcing over time.
Correcting an unwanted food habit
- Watch which food the Creature selects without intervening so you can identify the actual habit.
- Make the preferred alternative available in a comparable situation.
- Praise selection of the preferred food.
- Discourage the unwanted selection only when it occurs, then give the Creature another opportunity to choose.
- Keep the response consistent; alternating approval and punishment for the same choice weakens the lesson.
Do not infer that a food preference is permanently fixed because the Creature chooses correctly once. Continue monitoring, especially after a change in surroundings or routine.
How to teach sleeping
Sleep is learned through the same feedback principle. Observe when the Creature settles into sleep, praise the behavior you want to encourage, and avoid rewarding wakeful or disruptive behavior if your goal is a calmer rest habit. Because the available walkthrough does not establish a universal sleep timetable or exact duration, use the Creature’s observed behavior rather than an invented clock.
If the Creature does not sleep when you expect, first check whether you are responding to the wrong action. “Not asleep yet” is not itself a behavior to punish; identify what the Creature is doing instead, then decide whether that alternative is the one you want to discourage. Give it repeated opportunities to settle and reinforce the moment it does so.

What to teach first
New players usually get better results by establishing care habits before attempting complicated performance tasks. The following order is a practical progression, not a mandatory sequence imposed by the game.
| Priority | Behavior | Why start here | Training response |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eat the food you prefer | Feeding is a recurring care decision and gives you frequent, easy-to-observe practice. | Provide the preferred food, praise the correct choice, and discourage the unwanted choice only when it occurs. |
| 2 | Sleep and settle | Sleep is another basic routine identified in the 2001 walkthrough. | Observe the settling behavior and praise it consistently; do not invent a universal timetable. |
| 3 | Carry supplies | The historical review presents carrying as an example of a useful teachable task. | Create a carrying opportunity, praise successful attempts, and repeat before adding another objective. |
| 4 | Impress villagers or dance | These examples show that training can shape social and expressive behavior as well as chores. | Allow the action to occur in the relevant situation and respond immediately to the performance you want. |
| 5 | Fight or cast miracles | These are more consequential behaviors and can be harder to evaluate while you are still learning the feedback system. | Use the same observe–opportunity–feedback loop, but change one behavior at a time so the result is readable. |
The table is a learning strategy, not a promise that the Creature will master each behavior in a fixed number of attempts. The sources describe responsiveness and development, not a published threshold for success.
Direct guidance versus learned preference
Two kinds of influence are easy to confuse. A direct interaction can prompt an activity in the moment; praise and punishment shape what the Creature is more likely to do in the future. Use the distinction when a behavior seems to work once but does not become a habit.
| Approach | What it does | Best use | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct guidance | Gets the Creature moving toward an immediate activity or situation. | Showing the Creature what to interact with or creating the first opportunity to perform a task. | Assuming an action prompted once will become an automatic preference. |
| Learned preference | Uses repeated praise or punishment to alter future tendencies. | Teaching food choice, sleep behavior and recurring work or social actions. | Changing the feedback from one attempt to the next, which produces an unclear lesson. |
This is why simply making a Creature perform an action is not the same as teaching it to choose that action later. Prompt the first attempt when necessary, then reinforce the behavior you want to see without the prompt.
How to read a semi-autonomous Creature
Because the Creature can act independently, observation is part of care rather than a final check after training. Spend time watching before you intervene. Note what happened immediately before the behavior, the behavior itself, and the consequence you supplied. This three-part record helps separate a genuine preference from a one-time coincidence.
A practical monitoring loop
- Scan the situation: identify available food, nearby objects, villagers and the Creature’s current activity.
- Wait for a complete action: do not react to an intention or partial movement if the behavior has not occurred.
- Give one clear consequence: praise or punish the action you just observed.
- Watch the next opportunity: see whether the Creature repeats, abandons or modifies the behavior.
- Adjust one variable: if the result is unclear, change the opportunity or your timing, not every part of the routine at once.
Avoid constant intervention. If you interrupt every action, you may prevent the Creature from revealing what it would choose on its own, making it harder to know which habits are actually established.

Disposition and development: what the evidence supports
Academic discussion of the original game characterizes the Creature as developing in response to player behavior. Your conduct therefore matters beyond an individual meal or task: repeated treatment contributes to the kind of Creature the game presents over time.
That principle should be stated cautiously. The available historical sources do not establish a precise neglect timer, a guaranteed moral-alignment threshold or a formula that predicts the Creature’s final disposition from a fixed number of praises and punishments. Treat disposition as a responsive game outcome, not as a meter you can calculate from an online chart.
For practical play, this means using a stable standard. If you want a helpful, restrained Creature, consistently reinforce helpful and restrained actions and discourage harmful or disruptive ones. If you change your standard, expect the Creature’s tendencies to reflect the new pattern gradually rather than immediately.

The Creature repeats an unwanted action
First verify that you are punishing the exact action, not an event that merely happened nearby. Then check whether you have ever rewarded the same behavior accidentally. Remove the mixed signal, create another opportunity, and respond consistently to the next occurrence.
Praise does not seem to work
Check timing. If praise arrives long after the behavior, the Creature may associate it with something else. Also confirm that the action actually completed and that you are praising the behavior you intend, rather than a movement that preceded it. Continue with several clear repetitions before deciding that the habit has failed to change.

The Creature will not sleep
Watch what it does instead of treating wakefulness as a single, punishable act. If it is performing another behavior, decide whether that behavior is the actual target. Then offer repeated chances to settle and praise the completed sleep behavior. There is no source-supported universal sleep timer to use as a test.
A learned behavior appears to have disappeared
Recheck the context. A tendency learned around one object or situation may not appear identically elsewhere, and the game’s semi-autonomous design allows behavior to vary. Recreate the original opportunity, reinforce the behavior again, and then test it in the new setting.
Training feels unpredictable after many corrections
Stop adding new goals temporarily. Return to one simple behavior, use one consistent consequence, and observe several attempts without changing the rule. Overcorrection can make the feedback pattern harder to interpret than the Creature’s original behavior.

Version note for the original PC release
A community-hosted copy of Lionhead’s historical patch 1.1 readme documents a fix for a learned-information retention bug. If a Creature appears to lose information it previously learned, confirm which version of the original PC game you are running and consult the patch documentation that matches that release. Do not apply sequel-specific instructions to this guide: Black & White 2 uses different systems, including role-focused mechanics that are not authority for the 2001 game.
The original game is legacy software, and the historical material does not establish a current official support route. Version-specific troubleshooting should therefore be conservative: identify the installed release first, preserve saved games, and avoid assuming that a fix documented for another edition applies to yours.
Optional further reading
If you want a period reference, Black & White Prima’s Official Strategy Guide is documented as an optional guide for the game. GameFAQs also catalogs guides for the original PC release and the Creature Isle expansion. These references can provide historical context, but you do not need a physical book to apply the core training loop in this article, and current stock, price and edition details are not established here.
Quick in-game checklist
- Confirm that you are playing the original 2001 PC Black & White.
- Pick one observable behavior instead of trying to reshape everything at once.
- Create a clear opportunity for that behavior.
- Praise the completed action immediately when you want more of it.
- Punish only the specific completed action you want less of.
- Use the same response across repeated opportunities.
- Include food and sleep in the routine, not just dramatic tasks.
- Observe the Creature’s independent choices before intervening.
- Expect development to respond to your conduct without relying on an unsupported numerical threshold.
- If learned information seems to vanish, check the historical 1.1 patch documentation for your game version.
The most reliable way to care for and train the Creature is therefore deliberately simple: provide the right opportunity, watch the complete behavior, and make your response consistent. Over time, those repeated consequences—not a hidden command script—are what shape the Creature you live with in the original Black & White.
