The safest order is simple: back up your information, remove the SIM and microSD cards, disconnect every account and trusted device, factory-reset the phone, then send it to a reputable trade-in program, charity, or electronics recycler. Working, intact phones can usually be reused; broken, water-damaged, swollen-battery, or obsolete phones belong with a qualified electronics or household-hazardous-waste program—not household trash or curbside recycling.

Decide whether the phone should be reused or recycled

Use the phone’s condition and your goal to choose a route before you start preparing it. A phone that powers on, charges normally, has no dangerous damage, and can pass a factory reset is generally suitable for a trade-in or donation. A phone that is dead, badly damaged, water-damaged, obsolete, or unsafe to handle should go to a manufacturer, retailer, local electronics program, or certified recycler.

Route Best fit Questions to compare
Trade-in Working phones with resale value What is the current quote? How are condition and carrier locks judged? When is payment made? Who bears shipping risk?
Donate Working phones you want reused for community benefit Is the charity reputable? Which models and accessories are accepted? Will it provide tax documentation? What is its data-handling policy?
Recycle Dead, damaged, obsolete, or ineligible phones How are batteries handled? Is the recycler R2 or e-Stewards certified? How is data destroyed? Are there fees or special drop-off and mail-in rules?

Availability, eligibility, and terms vary by country, state, phone model, condition, and carrier. Do not assume that a program accepting one phone will accept another, or that a quote shown today will remain valid after inspection.

  1. Back up and transfer everything you need. Save photos, contacts, messages, videos, notes, documents, call history, and any other files. Move authenticator accounts and two-factor methods to the replacement phone or re-enrol them with each service. The Federal Trade Commission advises backing up before setting up the replacement phone; do not begin the wipe until you can open important data on the new device.
  2. Check for app-specific data. Confirm that password-manager vaults, passkeys, travel or transit credentials, mobile-wallet cards, health data, and work profiles have transferred according to each service’s instructions. A factory reset removes local data, but it does not automatically recreate an account or restore an authentication method.
  3. Remove the physical SIM. A SIM can contain personal information and may still authenticate your mobile number. Eject it, keep it for reuse if appropriate, or destroy it if it will not be reused. If you use an eSIM, follow the device’s erase option during the reset rather than assuming that deleting a cellular plan from your carrier account removes the phone’s profile.
  4. Remove and handle the microSD card separately. Keep the card if you want its files. If you are giving it away, erase it with the card manufacturer’s or operating system’s secure erase option, or physically destroy it when it is no longer needed. A phone reset does not necessarily erase a removable card.
  5. Unlink accounts and trusted devices. Remove the phone from Apple, Google, and Microsoft account device lists and any other service that shows trusted hardware. Sign out of work or school management, messaging, cloud-storage, password-manager, and payment apps as required. Move or revoke authenticator access before the old phone is wiped.
  6. Unpair accessories. Remove the phone from watches, cars, headphones, smart-home systems, and other Bluetooth devices. This prevents the next owner from appearing as an old trusted connection and makes pairing with your replacement easier.
  7. Check the carrier status. A carrier lock can affect trade-in eligibility and resale value. Do not claim that a phone is unlocked unless you have verified its status with the carrier or in the phone’s settings.
  8. Record identifying details. Write down the IMEI or serial number for your records and photograph the phone’s condition before shipping or dropping it off. Keep the receipt, tracking number, and any confirmation of acceptance.
  9. Remove items you are not including. Take off cases, screen protectors, memory cards, SIM trays, and accessories unless the destination specifically requests them. A trade-in or charity may value an included charger, but you should not surrender a charger or accessory you intend to keep.

Factory-reset the phone and verify that it is no longer yours

The reset is the point at which local contacts, texts, photos, videos, search history, and browsing history are removed. It is not a substitute for backing up, signing out, removing cards, or disabling activation protections. When the reset finishes, the phone should show its initial setup or welcome screen, not your home screen.

iPhone steps

Apple’s support instructions dated June 12, 2026, call for a specific sequence. Back up the iPhone, sign out of Apple services, and deregister iMessage if you are moving to a non-Apple phone. Then open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the prompts, including the option to erase the eSIM profile when it appears. Apple states that erasing the device turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Remove the old iPhone from your trusted-device list as well.

After the erase, stop at the setup screen. Do not sign back in to “check” the phone; doing so would put your account on the device again. If the phone still requests your Apple Account during activation, it has not been released and is not ready for a buyer, charity, or recycler.

Android and other phones

Menu labels differ by manufacturer and operating-system version. Before resetting, sign out of the manufacturer account and Google account, remove the phone from their device-management pages, and disable any theft-protection or enterprise-management enrollment that remains. Then use the device’s Settings search for factory reset or erase all data, read the warning, and confirm the reset. If the phone uses an eSIM, choose whether to erase the cellular profile when prompted. The exact label and location can change after an update, so follow the on-screen wording for your model.

Make a final handoff check

  • The phone starts at a welcome or setup screen.
  • The physical SIM and microSD card are out.
  • Find My, Activation Lock, factory-reset protection, and other account locks are disabled.
  • Authenticator access, two-factor methods, wallets, work profiles, and trusted-device entries have moved or been revoked.
  • The IMEI or serial number, photos, receipt, and tracking information are stored safely.
  • The destination has confirmed what it accepts, including condition, carrier status, accessories, and battery condition.

Trading in a working phone

A trade-in is convenient when the phone has resale value and you want credit or payment rather than reuse through a charity. Start with a current quote from the manufacturer, carrier, retailer, or other program you are considering. A quote is not a guaranteed final value: inspection can change it if the condition, model, storage capacity, carrier lock, or included components differ from your description.

Compare the offer, not just the headline value

  • Condition rules: Ask how cracks, dead pixels, water indicators, missing buttons, battery problems, and cosmetic wear are graded.
  • Eligibility: Confirm that the exact model, storage size, region, and carrier status are accepted.
  • Payment timing: Find out whether you receive instant credit, a later payment after inspection, or a revised offer that requires your approval.
  • Shipping risk: Use the supplied packaging and tracking, photograph the packed phone, and learn what happens if the package is lost or the inspection disagrees with your description.
  • Data handling: You remain responsible for removing your information even when the program promises secure processing.

Apple documents that Apple Trade In accepts devices in stores or online. Devices that are not eligible for credit can still be recycled through Apple at no charge. Use the live eligibility flow for the current model and condition requirements; no universal trade-in price can be stated without those details.

Package and ship it safely

  1. Power the phone off after the reset and remove the SIM and microSD card.
  2. Follow the program’s battery and packaging instructions exactly. Do not improvise packaging for a damaged battery.
  3. Photograph the phone, its IMEI or serial number, and the sealed parcel.
  4. Use tracked shipping and retain the drop-off receipt until payment or acceptance is final.
  5. Check the inspection result promptly. If the value changes, compare the stated reason with the program’s condition rules before accepting or declining.

Donating a phone for reuse

Donation can extend a working phone’s useful life, but “free” does not mean that every organization can use every model. Check the charity’s reputation, accepted models, operating-system requirements, carrier restrictions, accessories policy, and data-handling process before sending anything.

  • How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
  • The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
  • Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs

Questions to ask the charity

  • Does it accept your model, country variant, and carrier status?
  • Will it refurbish the phone, give it directly to a recipient, or sell it to fund programs?
  • Does it provide a receipt or other tax documentation, and what information will that document contain?
  • Does it require a charger, case, or unlocked phone?
  • How does it erase or verify data if a donor has not completed the reset?

Even if the organization says it wipes devices, complete the backup, account removal, card removal, and factory reset yourself. Keep the donation receipt and any shipment tracking. If the phone is water-damaged, has a failing battery, or cannot be reset, disclose that condition instead of presenting it as a usable donation.

Recycling a dead, damaged, or obsolete phone

Phones contain recoverable materials and lithium-ion batteries. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, citing U.S. Geological Survey data from 2006, reports that recycling one million cell phones can recover approximately 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium. Recycling also keeps batteries and electronics out of disposal streams that are not designed for them.

Do not put a phone or loose lithium-ion battery in household garbage or curbside recycling. Municipal systems differ, and a battery can be damaged, crushed, or ignited during collection and sorting.

Find an appropriate program

Apple, the EPA, and local governments describe several ways to locate a drop-off or mail-in option. EPA-named search routes include Call2Recycle, Earth911, and Greener Gadgets; EPA notes that naming a lookup service is not an endorsement of every provider listed there. Confirm acceptance rules with the actual location before you travel or ship.

For end-of-life devices, prefer an electronics recycler certified to R2 or e-Stewards. Ask whether the certification applies to the facility receiving your phone, how data destruction is documented, whether batteries are removed or processed separately, and whether the service charges a fee. Local acceptance, shipping rules, and fees vary.

Handle swollen, hot, punctured, smoking, or otherwise damaged batteries differently

Stop using a phone if its battery is swollen, unusually hot, punctured, leaking, smoking, or otherwise damaged. Keep it away from flammable materials and do not press, puncture, bend, charge, or attempt to remove the battery yourself. Contact your local household-hazardous-waste or electronics program for handling instructions.

Do not mail a damaged battery until both the carrier and the recycler confirm the packaging and transport requirements. A standard trade-in label or ordinary drop-off bin may not be approved for a damaged lithium-ion battery. Tell the program exactly what happened so it can direct you to a safe channel.

What to do when the phone is dead or you cannot unlock it

If you cannot power on or unlock the phone, do not guess that your data is gone. Remove the SIM and microSD card if you can do so without damaging a swollen or unsafe device. Contact the manufacturer, carrier, or a qualified electronics recycler and explain that the phone is inaccessible. Ask for its documented data-destruction process and whether it accepts devices that cannot be factory-reset.

A recycler that cannot explain how it handles inaccessible storage, batteries, and downstream processing is not a suitable destination for a phone containing personal or business information. Do not send a damaged device through an ordinary mail-in trade-in route until its battery and transport requirements are confirmed.

Troubleshoot common handoff problems

The recipient says the phone is still locked to you

Use your Apple, Google, Microsoft, or manufacturer account’s device list to remove the old phone, then verify that Find My, Activation Lock, or equivalent theft protection is off. If you already shipped it, contact the recipient immediately and follow its official removal process; never share your account password.

Your replacement phone is missing an authenticator or messages

Stop the wipe on any device that still contains the only working authentication method. Transfer or re-enrol each authenticator and two-factor method, save recovery codes where appropriate, and test sign-in on the replacement before resetting the old phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-in value was reduced

Compare the inspection notes with the condition description you submitted. Check for differences in model, storage, carrier lock, screen or body damage, battery condition, and accessories. Accept the revised offer only if it remains worthwhile; otherwise follow the program’s return procedure and keep all tracking records.

A recycling location refuses the phone

Acceptance can depend on battery condition, local rules, model, and whether the site handles mail-in devices. Do not leave the phone at the site. Ask which approved program accepts that condition, and use the EPA-named lookup routes or a certified recycler’s directory to find another option.

Bottom line

Protect your data first, then match the phone to the safest destination: trade in or donate a working, intact device; recycle a dead, damaged, obsolete, or ineligible one. Remove every card and account, factory-reset and verify the welcome screen, retain handoff records, and treat any lithium-ion battery damage as a hazardous-materials issue rather than a normal shipment.
