There is no universally safe leverage setting for crypto perpetual futures. The safer method is to choose the loss you can afford first, size the position around that loss, use the lowest leverage that achieves the trade’s objective, and keep a substantial buffer between your planned exit and the venue’s estimated liquidation price.
Perpetual futures have no ordinary expiry, can be traded around the clock, and use leverage. Their funding mechanism periodically transfers value between longs and shorts to keep the contract close to an index or spot reference. Those features make them flexible, but they also mean that maintenance margin, mark price, funding, fees, contract tiers and venue rules can close a position before the chart appears to reach the displayed liquidation level.
What a crypto perpetual future is
A perpetual future is a derivative contract designed to track an underlying asset without a normal expiration date. Coinbase describes perpetual-style futures as combining “no expiration, leverage, and 24/7 access.” You do not own the underlying coin merely by opening a perpetual position; you hold a long or short contract whose profit and loss is settled according to the venue’s rules.
Because the contract has no scheduled expiry to pull its price toward spot, venues use periodic funding payments. Depending on the funding rate and your position direction, you pay the opposite side or receive a payment from it. Funding is therefore a continuing holding cost or credit, not a one-time opening fee.

How leverage changes the risk
The basic relationship
Leverage is the notional value of a position divided by the initial margin posted to open it:
Leverage = position notional value ÷ initial margin.
A $10,000 position opened with $500 of initial margin has 20× leverage. The position’s market exposure is still $10,000, so a small percentage move in the underlying produces a much larger percentage change in the posted margin.
Why a 20× position can disappear after a 5% move
Ignoring fees, funding and maintenance-margin effects, a 20× position can lose approximately all of its initial margin after a 5% adverse move. A 5% fall against a 20× long, or a 5% rise against a 20× short, represents roughly 100% of the original margin. In practice, liquidation normally occurs earlier or at a different price because the venue must preserve maintenance margin and may deduct fees and funding.
Leverage amplifies gains and losses. The CFTC warns that “Entering into futures contracts through leveraged accounts can amplify the risks of trading the product.” Its customer guidance also warns that a trader may have to provide additional margin or close a position and can lose more than the initial amount deposited.

Maximum leverage is not a target
The largest multiplier shown in an order panel is a product limit, not a risk recommendation. Higher leverage leaves less room for ordinary volatility, funding deductions, spread, slippage and mark-price movement. A low-leverage position can still be dangerous if its notional size is too large for your account; a high-leverage setting can be less immediately risky only when the actual position size and loss limit are kept correspondingly small. Judge the trade by potential account loss, not by the headline multiplier.

Initial margin, maintenance margin and margin ratio
Initial margin opens the trade
Initial margin is the collateral required to establish a position. It is not necessarily the maximum amount you can lose. Losses, trading fees, funding and other deductions reduce your equity after entry.
Maintenance margin keeps it open
Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires to keep a position open. As your unrealized loss grows, your equity approaches that requirement. Crossing the venue’s liquidation threshold can start forced reduction or closure.
Margin ratio is venue-specific
Coinbase defines margin ratio as maintenance margin required divided by total equity. Its US derivatives risk table uses 100% as the liquidation threshold. That figure is an example of one venue’s framework, not a universal crypto rule. Other venues can use different formulas, warning bands, maintenance tiers, collateral haircuts and liquidation triggers.
Maintenance requirements can change with position size. A larger notional position may move into a higher maintenance-margin tier, increasing the equity required to keep it open. Coinbase also notes that margin requirements can rise during overnight or weekend windows. A trade that looked comfortably funded at entry can therefore become closer to liquidation without a matching price move.

Liquidation is a risk-engine event
Liquidation begins when the venue’s risk engine determines that your equity no longer covers the required maintenance margin under its contract rules. The venue may cancel orders, reduce the position in stages, close it at market, use an insurance fund or apply a loss-sharing process. The exact sequence belongs to the contract specification.

The displayed price is an estimate
The liquidation price shown in an interface is calculated from inputs such as entry price, position direction and size, collateral, maintenance tier, fees, funding, mark price and the venue’s formula. It can change when you add or remove collateral, increase or reduce the position, pay funding, cross a tier or receive a fee adjustment. Treat it as a moving estimate, not a guaranteed stop level.
A planned stop should be placed well before the estimated liquidation price. A stop order is an attempt to exit under your instructions; liquidation is a venue-enforced action after the account breaches its risk conditions. They are not interchangeable.
Why the chart did not touch your liquidation price
Most venues use a mark price for liquidation rather than the last traded price. The mark price is generally derived from an index or fair-price methodology. CFTC comment materials explain that venues use mark price to reduce the influence of unusually volatile or potentially manipulable last trades and liquidate when the position falls below maintenance margin.
Consequently, the last-price chart may never display the number you remember while the mark price briefly reaches the risk threshold. Differences can also arise from chart selection, candle resolution, index constituents, a rapid move between displayed ticks, fees, funding, maintenance-tier changes or partial liquidation. When investigating, compare the venue’s historical mark price and index data with the liquidation record, not only the last-trade chart.
Isolated margin versus cross margin
Isolated margin
In isolated mode, collateral is assigned to a particular position according to the venue’s definition. Losses are generally confined to that position’s allocated collateral, although the contract may permit you to add more. This makes the maximum planned collateral exposure easier to document and prevents an unrelated position from automatically supplying the trade with the rest of the account.
Isolated mode does not make a position safe. The allocated margin can still be liquidated, funding can still reduce it, and adding collateral increases the capital at risk. Check whether the venue treats unrealized profits, additional margin and shared balances in the way you expect.

Cross margin
Cross mode uses eligible account collateral to support positions under the venue’s risk engine. A losing trade can draw on funds that would otherwise support other positions or remain available for withdrawal. Cross margin can delay liquidation of one position, but it can also expose much more of the account to a correlated move.

How to choose
- Use isolated margin when you want a position’s collateral risk separated from other trades and can define its maximum allocation.
- Use cross margin only when you understand which balances are shared, how unrealized profit is credited, and how one position can affect the rest of the account.
- Read the venue’s exact definitions before switching modes; the labels are not sufficient to establish identical behavior across platforms.
How funding rates affect an open position
Funding is a recurring transfer
Funding helps keep a perpetual contract aligned with its index. When the funding rate is positive, the exact payer and receiver depend on the venue’s convention, commonly with longs paying shorts; when it is negative, the direction reverses. Confirm the sign convention and schedule in the contract specification.
Funding is calculated according to the venue’s formula, often using position notional at a funding timestamp. A position held through several intervals can accumulate a meaningful debit or credit even if the underlying price is unchanged.
Funding can move liquidation closer
Binance explains that, when the account balance is insufficient, funding can be deducted from position margin and change the liquidation price. That means a position can become riskier during a flat market. Estimate funding for the expected holding period and reserve collateral for adverse funding rather than assuming the posted initial margin is untouched.
Questions to answer before holding through funding
- What is the next funding timestamp and how often does funding occur?
- Is the displayed rate an estimate, a capped rate or a final rate?
- Is funding taken from available balance first, then position margin, or handled differently?
- What happens if the account lacks enough collateral at the timestamp?
A safer process for opening and managing a trade
- Confirm jurisdiction and product eligibility. Verify that the venue and the specific perpetual contract are legally available to you. Read the current customer agreement, risk disclosure and contract specification. Rules differ by jurisdiction and venue. A CFTC announcement dated May 29, 2026 categorized certain crypto perpetuals as foreign futures under specified conditions; that does not make every perpetual available or suitable in every country.
- Define the maximum loss before choosing leverage. Set a monetary loss limit for the trade. Include expected entry and exit fees, a funding allowance, spread and possible slippage. Do not start with “How much leverage can I use?” Start with “How much can this trade lose before I exit?”
- Calculate position size from the loss limit. Estimate the distance from entry to your planned stop or invalidation price. Position notional should be small enough that that price move, plus costs, stays within the predetermined loss. If the required size is too small for the contract minimum, skip the trade rather than moving the stop closer to liquidation.
- Select the lowest practical leverage. Use only enough leverage to make the intended notional possible while preserving a wide distance to liquidation. Lowering the interface multiplier does not reduce risk if you increase the position to keep the same notional; size and stop distance determine the loss.
- Choose the margin mode deliberately. Prefer isolated margin when you want a clearly bounded collateral allocation. If using cross margin, list every balance and position that can be drawn into the risk calculation.
- Check the mark-price and maintenance rules. Record the contract’s index sources, mark-price method, maintenance tiers, liquidation threshold, partial-liquidation sequence and fee treatment. Compare your planned exit with the mark-price-based estimate, not just a last-price chart.
- Place the trade with a buffer. Keep substantial room between the planned exit and displayed liquidation price. Avoid placing a stop where ordinary spread or a brief mark-price move can trigger it. Confirm whether the stop uses last price, mark price or index price.
- Monitor the risk variables. During the trade, watch mark price, index price, margin ratio, maintenance tier, funding charges, open orders, available collateral and changes to the contract rules. Do not rely on a notification arriving before liquidation.
- Reduce risk before forced liquidation. Close part or all of the position, lower notional or add collateral only after considering the resulting total exposure. Adding collateral can lower the immediate margin ratio but increases capital at risk and is not a substitute for a loss limit.
- Recheck after changes. Recalculate liquidation, funding and withdrawal conditions after changing size, margin mode, collateral, leverage or orders, and after a venue updates its contract or risk system.
Worked risk example
Suppose a trader has a $2,000 account and chooses a $40 maximum loss for one trade. The trader estimates a 2% adverse move from entry to the planned exit and reserves $4 for fees and funding. The maximum notional is approximately $1,800 because a 2% move on $1,800 is $36, leaving the $4 cost allowance inside the $40 limit.
If the interface permits 20× leverage, the initial margin for that $1,800 notional could be about $90 before venue-specific requirements. The trade is not “a $90 risk”: the planned loss is $40, while liquidation risk can involve the allocated collateral and, in cross mode, more of the account. If funding rises, the mark price moves differently from the last price, or maintenance requirements increase, the estimate must be recalculated.

This example is a sizing illustration, not a promise about any venue’s margin formula or execution price. Contract minimums, tiered maintenance, fees, funding and slippage can make the actual figures different.
What to compare before choosing a venue or contract
| Risk area | Questions to verify |
|---|---|
| Legal availability | Is the venue and product permitted for residents of your jurisdiction, and what customer recourse applies? |
| Leverage and margin tiers | What are the maximum and effective leverage limits, initial-margin requirements and maintenance tiers at your intended size? |
| Collateral model | Is margin isolated or shared, which assets are eligible, and are collateral haircuts applied? |
| Pricing reference | How are index price and mark price constructed, and which price triggers stops and liquidation? |
| Funding | What formula, cap, interval and payer convention apply, and can funding be deducted from position margin? |
| Liquidation process | Does the venue partially liquidate, cancel orders, close at market, use an insurance fund or apply loss sharing? |
| Trading costs | What are maker and taker fees, spreads, expected slippage and minimum order sizes? |
| Custody and access | What withdrawal controls, security protections, downtime procedures and account-recovery options exist? |
Common failure modes and what to do
“I used the maximum leverage because the position was small.”
A small initial margin does not make the notional exposure small. Recalculate the dollar loss at the planned exit and reduce notional until it fits the account-level limit.
“My stop was below liquidation, so it should have protected me.”
A stop can fail to fill at its trigger because of gaps, thin liquidity, a wrong trigger-price setting or system interruption. A stop placed only slightly before liquidation leaves no practical execution buffer. Use a wider planned exit, smaller size and enough available collateral to withstand ordinary movement.

Check mark price, index data, timestamp precision and the venue’s liquidation record. The liquidation engine may use mark price, and the displayed estimate may have changed because of funding, fees or a maintenance-tier transition.
“I added collateral and the ratio improved.”
Adding collateral can reduce the immediate margin ratio, but it increases the amount that can be lost. Treat it as a new risk decision: reassess the position, stop, funding exposure and total account concentration rather than repeatedly rescuing a losing trade.
“Funding looked tiny, so I ignored it.”
A single funding payment may be small, while repeated payments over a long hold materially reduce equity. Record the expected number of intervals and the source of each estimate before entering.
Operational checklist
- Jurisdiction, venue terms and contract specification checked.
- Maximum dollar loss written down before entry.
- Fees, funding, spread and slippage included in the estimate.
- Notional size calculated from stop distance, not from maximum leverage.
- Margin mode and collateral that can be lost understood.
- Mark price, index methodology and trigger-price settings confirmed.
- Maintenance tiers and liquidation process reviewed.
- Planned exit is comfortably before estimated liquidation.
- Available collateral is not needed for rent, debt service or other essential obligations.
- Funding, margin ratio, maintenance tier and open orders monitored while the position is open.
- Rules rechecked after venue, contract or account updates.
Bottom line: what “safe” can mean here
Crypto perpetual futures cannot be made safe by selecting a particular leverage number. A safer trade has a defined maximum loss, modest notional exposure, a wide mark-price buffer, understood maintenance requirements, deliberate margin mode, funding capacity and a plan to reduce risk before forced liquidation. Because venues and jurisdictions differ, verify the current contract rules every time you trade rather than treating another platform’s liquidation price, warning band or leverage limit as a universal standard.
