The reliable way to find profitable World of Warcraft crafts is to combine four observations: the correct market scope, a timestamped price, available quantity, and enough history to show whether the price is normal. Then compare the output’s realistic selling price with the exact reagent cost and treat the result as a screening estimate—not guaranteed profit.
This workflow is designed for current Retail data. The documented Undermine Exchange coverage discussed here is for the latest Retail version, not Classic, and separates region-wide commodity data from realm or connected-realm item data.
What an Auction House price actually represents
An Auction House tool may show a current listing snapshot, a historical observation, an addon-uploaded scan, or a verified sale metric. Those are different things. A listed price tells you what a seller is asking at the time of the snapshot; it does not prove that a buyer completed the purchase.

Conversely, a low listing can be bought out quickly and fail to represent the price available to someone who needs a larger quantity.

- Price: the unit or item amount shown by the data provider.
- Quantity: how many units are available at or near that price.
- Timestamp: when the game snapshot was taken and when the service processed it.
- History: prior observations that reveal recurring levels, spikes and shortages.
- Sales evidence: a separate measure, if the chosen tool documents completed sales or sell-through.
Use all five where available. Do not label the lowest listing as the “market price” without stating that it is a listing snapshot.
Step 1: Define the market before collecting numbers
Commodity materials use regional pricing
Raw materials and other commodities are traded through a regional market. Compare the unit price shown for your region rather than assuming that the realm name alone defines the market. A regional commodity price can be useful to every character in that region, but it can also move quickly when a new raid, profession change or farming route changes supply.
Non-commodity items depend on realm or connected-realm scope
Most crafted equipment, recipes, pets and other non-commodity items are tied to a realm or connected-realm auction context. Select the exact realm or connected realm before recording a price. A price from another realm can be directionally interesting but is not a valid input for your own cost calculation.
Confirm Retail versus Classic
The Undermine Exchange API documentation identifies the coverage described here as the latest Retail version, not Classic. If you play Classic, use a data source that explicitly supports your Classic phase and region; do not silently transfer Retail prices, recipe IDs or history to a Classic calculation.
Step 2: Choose a data source and understand its limits
No single service answers every question. Compare providers on the fields they actually document, not on a refresh label that sounds current.

Step 3: Capture a timestamped snapshot
Never write down a number without its time. Auction data can be stale even when a page opens successfully.

- Select the region and realm context. For a commodity, select the regional market. For a non-commodity, select the realm or connected realm where you will sell.
- Record the game snapshot time. This is when the Blizzard auction snapshot was taken, not necessarily when you viewed the page.
- Record the provider update time. Undermine Exchange distinguishes the Blizzard snapshot from its own
lastUpdatedvalue. - Check the item’s observation age. A delayed or zero-quantity item can retain an older
lastSeenvalue. Treat it as stale evidence rather than a live quote. - Save the quantity with the price. A one-unit listing and a 10,000-unit supply at the same unit price lead to very different purchasing decisions.
- Store the observation. Keep the item ID or exact item name, market scope, price, quantity, snapshot time, provider update time and source view in a spreadsheet.
A practical spreadsheet row might contain: date/time UTC | region | realm/connected realm | item | unit price | available quantity | snapshot time | lastUpdated | lastSeen | source | notes. UTC avoids confusion when comparing scans made in different time zones.
Step 4: Compare commodities by unit price
Commodity listings are not comparable by stack total. Divide every stack cost by its number of units, or use the unit-price field supplied by the interface.

Because buyers choose a quantity, the interface can select the lowest-priced units needed for that purchase. For your own analysis, use the same basis:

- Unit cost: total listing price divided by units in the listing.
- Recipe reagent cost: each required quantity multiplied by its unit price, added across all reagents.
- Crafted output price: the unit or item price at the same market scope and observation time.
Example: if a recipe needs 12 units of a reagent at 4 gold each and 8 units of another at 7 gold each, the reagent bill is 48 + 56 = 104 gold. Do not compare that 104-gold input with a single stack’s displayed total unless both figures describe the same number of units.

Step 5: Build enough history to recognize a normal price
A single scan can reveal an opportunity, but history tells you whether it is repeatable. The documented Undermine Exchange hourly commodity endpoint covers roughly the preceding 14 days, with daily history also available. The cadence is described as approximately hourly and is not guaranteed, so gaps are possible.
What to calculate
- Median unit price: a better baseline than the absolute lowest listing when occasional undercuts distort the minimum.
- Typical available quantity: the middle range of supply, not just the largest restock.
- Price range: the observed low and high, with dates attached.
- Persistence: how many separate observations stayed above your target margin.
- Co-movement: whether reagent prices and the crafted output rise or fall together.
Use a consistent interval. If you compare hourly observations for one item with a once-daily value for another, label the difference; otherwise you may mistake a sampling difference for a market difference.
Read timestamps and gaps correctly
An old lastSeen value means the service has not observed a newer listing for that item. It does not mean the old price is still available. A zero-quantity snapshot can still carry a previous price, which should be recorded as historical context but excluded from a “buy now” decision.
Step 6: Screen a recipe for potential margin
Start with a recipe whose output you can actually craft and list. You need the recipe’s reagent quantities, current reagent prices, the output’s observed price and a realistic view of demand.
- Confirm recipe access and rank. Include the recipe version, quality requirements and any specialization effect that changes the output.
- List every reagent. Include optional reagents and alternative inputs separately; do not assume the cheapest substitute has identical results.
- Price each reagent. Use unit prices from the same timestamp and market scope.
- Calculate material cost. Multiply each unit price by the quantity required, then add the lines.
- Record the output observation. Save the lowest practical listing, the broader price range and available quantity.
- Subtract costs and allowances. Gross margin is output price minus reagent cost. If you model a posting fee, failed crafts, quality loss or a sale discount, show each assumption separately.
- Apply a liquidity test. Require more than one favorable observation and enough visible quantity to support your planned production.

TheWoWDB describes its recipe and reagent inputs as coming from current game-client data and its prices as coming from Blizzard auction data. Its calculation excludes the value of your time and the crafting-orders market. Therefore, a positive displayed margin is an initial screen, not a guaranteed profit.
Step 7: Test liquidity before committing gold
Margin matters only if the output can sell at the assumed price. Check three separate signals:

- Depth: how many units are listed near the price you used.
- Competition: how many sellers and alternative qualities are undercutting you.
- Evidence of sales: whether the chosen tool documents completed sales, sell-through or sales volume.
The cited listing and snapshot descriptions establish asking prices and quantities, not completed transactions. Do not call a price “realized” or “selling” unless your data source documents that measure. If no sales evidence exists, reduce the batch size, list a test quantity and treat the outcome as an experiment rather than scaling immediately.
How to find materials worth investigating
Look for stable demand, not just a sudden spike
Materials used by several popular recipes are usually better candidates for investigation than a reagent needed by one obscure craft. History should show repeated purchases or sustained price levels, but the available data may not prove sell-through. Phrase your conclusion as “worth investigating” until you have observed your own sales.
Compare raw-material and crafted-output paths
For each candidate, calculate two alternatives: selling the material directly and converting it into a craft. Crafting is attractive only when the output’s risk-adjusted margin compensates for your time, listing friction and the possibility of an unsold item.
Account for quality and specialization
If quality tiers, concentration, skill or optional reagents change the output, maintain separate rows. Combining all qualities into one average can create a margin that no single craft actually achieves.
Use a minimum evidence rule
Before buying a large stock, require a documented current snapshot, at least several historical observations, sufficient visible quantity for your intended batch and a margin that remains positive when you use a conservative output price rather than the top listing.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the wrong market
Symptom: the price looks excellent, but your character cannot buy or sell at that market level.
Fix: separate regional commodity rows from realm or connected-realm item rows and verify the game version.

Calling an old observation live
Symptom: a page shows a favorable price but the snapshot or lastSeen is old.
Fix: reject the quote for immediate purchasing and wait for a fresh observation.
Comparing stack totals
Symptom: a larger stack appears cheaper or more expensive only because it contains a different number of units.
Fix: normalize every commodity to unit price.
Ignoring quantity
Symptom: the margin exists for one unit, but your planned batch cannot be purchased or listed at that price.
Fix: record depth at each price level and recalculate for the actual quantity.

Symptom: repeated listings remain visible while the spreadsheet assumes they sold.
Fix: look for a documented sales-volume or sell-through field; otherwise label the result as listing-based and reduce confidence.
Counting your time as free
Symptom: a small gross spread consumes hours of farming, crafting and relisting.
Fix: add an explicit time allowance to your private decision model, even though the cited TheWoWDB method does not include player time.
A repeatable tracking routine
- At the same time each day: capture fresh prices, quantities and timestamps for your watchlist.
- After a major patch, raid release or profession change: create a new baseline instead of mixing it with older history.
- Once per week: review median prices, quantity changes and the number of observations that met your margin rule.
- Before buying inventory: rescan the exact reagents and output, then recalculate with the current quantity available.
- After listing: record what sold, how long it took and the achieved price. Keep this personal sales log separate from provider listing data.
- When evidence deteriorates: pause the craft if timestamps grow old, quantity disappears or the margin depends on one outlier listing.
What this method can and cannot promise
This process can identify candidates whose observed output prices exceed observed reagent costs under a defined market scope and time. It cannot guarantee that the output sells, that a listing remains available, or that a provider’s snapshot cadence captures every market change. No general data set can name a permanently profitable material for every realm: a valid claim requires the game version, region or realm, your recipe access, fresh item-level inputs and evidence of demand.
Use the result to decide what to investigate next, not to replace a fresh scan and a small real-world test. The strongest signal is a conservative margin that persists across multiple observations, has enough quantity to support your batch and survives comparison with your own completed sales.
