Use NASA’s free Spot the Station tools for the most complete answer: its live map shows where the International Space Station (ISS) is now, its sightings tool predicts visible passes over your area, and its mobile app can send alerts. Use the European Space Agency (ESA) tracker as a second live map and for orbital context. To find the people aboard, use NASA’s current International Space Station Expeditions page and the mission updates linked from it; crew assignments and vehicle timings change, so a static roster can become outdated quickly.
Which official ISS tracker should you use?
The question you ask determines the right page. A live map answers “Where is the ISS right now?” A sightings forecast answers “When will the ISS pass over my location?” An expedition page answers “Who is currently on the ISS?” These are related but different data sets, and no single screen should be treated as a guaranteed crew or visibility schedule.
| Tool | Best for | What it provides | Notifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| NASA Spot the Station live map | Current position and ground track | The station’s present location, its track for 90 minutes into the past and 90 minutes ahead, and day/night shading over Earth | No dedicated alert function on the map itself |
| NASA Spot the Station sightings | Planning a viewing from a particular place | Location-based pass opportunities for more than 6,700 locations, calculated with data from Johnson Space Center Mission Control | Use the mobile app for alerts |
| NASA Spot the Station app | Personalized tracking while carrying a phone | Real-time tracking, flyover schedules, location personalization through phone GPS, and alerts | Yes |
| ESA ISS tracker | A second live position map and orbital explanation | Current position, a 90-minute historical path and 90-minute projected path, plus speed, altitude, orbit period and naked-eye viewing context | Not stated |
| NASA Expeditions and mission pages | Current crew and operational events | Expedition information, mission links and dated updates; use the linked pages for the latest roster and schedule | Not stated |
NASA is the strongest all-in-one choice when you need a local pass prediction and optional phone alerts. ESA is a useful independent check on the station’s position and a concise explanation of how quickly it moves. For crew names, launches, dockings and departures, the expedition index is more appropriate than either map.

Where is the ISS right now?
Read NASA’s live tracking map
- Open NASA’s Spot the Station live tracking map.
- Look for the station marker to see its current position above Earth.
- Follow the line behind the marker to see where it has traveled during the previous 90 minutes.
- Follow the line ahead of the marker to see the projected ground track for the next 90 minutes.
- Use the map’s day/night shading to determine whether the track is over the sunlit or dark side of Earth at each point.
The map is a real-time position reference, not a promise that the spacecraft is visible from the ground. A marker over your country means the ISS is passing within the broad map view; it does not establish that the station will be above your horizon at a bright enough angle for you to see it. For that, switch to the sightings forecast for your specific location.

Check the ESA tracker as a second source
ESA’s tracker also shows the station’s present position and its path 90 minutes before and 90 minutes ahead. The European Space Agency describes the ISS as moving west to east. Comparing the two maps can help if one page has not refreshed or if you want the orbital explanation displayed alongside the position.
When will the ISS pass over my location?
Use NASA’s location-based sightings page
- Open NASA’s ISS sightings feature, often labeled as sightings over your city or location.
- Choose your city from the available locations. NASA says predictions are available for more than 6,700 locations.
- Read the listed date and time for each opportunity, along with the direction in which the ISS will appear and the direction in which it will disappear.
- Plan to be outside a few minutes before the stated start time so you can face the indicated direction and let your eyes adjust.
- Return to the page close to the event. Pass predictions can change as orbital data and the station’s operations are updated.
NASA says these opportunities are calculated from data supplied by Mission Control at Johnson Space Center. The city list is convenient, but a nearby city may not produce exactly the same horizon geometry as your street. If your location is not listed, select the closest available place and treat the resulting time and direction as an approximation rather than a guarantee.
Personalize predictions in the mobile app
- Install NASA’s official Spot the Station app from your phone’s authorized app store.
- Allow location access if you want the app to use your phone’s GPS position.
- Review the next flyover opportunities generated for that position.
- Enable notifications if you want an alert before a pass.
- Open the alert and verify the viewing time and direction before going outside.
The app is optional. The website provides both the live map and location-based sightings without requiring the app. GPS personalization is useful when you travel or live outside the city centers represented in a fixed location list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Understand what a “pass” means
A pass is the interval in which the station travels across the part of the sky available from your location. It is not the same as the ISS crossing directly overhead, and it is not automatically a visible pass. Follow the forecast’s time and direction guidance instead of assuming that every line on the global map can be seen from the ground.
Why the ISS moves so quickly
ESA publishes the orbital figures that explain the short viewing window: the ISS travels at about 28,800 km/h at an altitude of roughly 400 km and circles Earth in about 92 minutes. Astronauts therefore experience 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets during a day aboard the station. The west-to-east motion shown by ESA’s tracker is the same motion that makes a visible ISS pass look like a bright, steady object crossing the sky rather than a stationary star.
| ESA-published figure | What it means for tracking |
|---|---|
| About 400 km altitude | The station is close enough to be observed from the ground but far above commercial aircraft and weather systems. |
| About 28,800 km/h | The station covers the sky quickly, so a late start can mean missing much of the pass. |
| About 92 minutes per orbit | The ISS circles Earth many times per day, but a particular location only gets occasional favorable viewing opportunities. |
| 16 sunrises and sunsets per day | Rapid day-night cycles are normal for the crew and explain why the station’s lighting conditions change frequently in orbit. |
ESA says the ISS can be seen with the naked eye at the right time. A telescope or binoculars is therefore optional, not a requirement for following its position or watching a favorable pass.

Who is currently on the ISS?
Start with NASA’s current expedition index
- Open NASA’s International Space Station Expeditions page.
- Open the expedition identified as current on that index, rather than relying on an older summary on NASA’s general ISS overview page.
- Use the crew and mission links on the expedition page to check the latest assignments, launch and docking information, and dated updates.
- For an individual astronaut, follow the mission page associated with that person’s expedition or vehicle.
NASA identifies Expedition 75 as beginning on July 26, 2026, with an expected end in spring 2027. That date range identifies the expedition, not a permanent guarantee that every person listed at its start remains aboard for the entire period. Crew rosters can change after launches, dockings, departures, or mission extensions, so consult the current expedition and mission pages when you need a present-tense answer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not treat the general ISS overview as the final roster
NASA’s broad International Space Station overview is useful for background and links to station resources, including expedition information and the daily station blog. Its expedition summary can lag behind newer updates, however. If the overview and the dated expedition index disagree, use the updated expedition index and its linked mission pages for current references.
Separate crew status from a daily activity schedule
A crew list tells you who is assigned; it does not give a minute-by-minute timetable for the station. Vehicle arrivals, departures, spacewalks, experiments, maintenance and communications events are operationally changeable. Use NASA’s dated mission updates and daily station blog for those events, and check the page date before repeating a time or activity as current.
How to combine the map, sightings and crew information
For a quick “where is it?” check
- Open NASA’s live map or ESA’s tracker.
- Read the current marker and the surrounding 90-minute path.
- Use the day/night shading to understand the lighting side of Earth beneath the track.
For planning an observation
- Use NASA’s sightings page or the app with your location.
- Record the forecast’s local date, start time, direction and end time.
- Go outside early and follow the specified direction rather than relying on the global map alone.
- Afterward, compare what you saw with the map’s track; the map explains the route, while the sightings page supplied the local opportunity.
For identifying the people aboard
- Open NASA’s expedition index.
- Read the currently designated expedition and its dated crew information.
- Open the linked mission page for recent launch, docking or departure changes.
- Use the date on each update to judge whether it is still current.
Why the ISS may not be visible during a mapped pass
A ground track crossing your region does not automatically equal a favorable visual opportunity. NASA’s local sightings forecast is the appropriate source for the time and direction to use from your location. Follow that forecast rather than inferring visibility from the marker alone.
ESA states that the station is visible without optical equipment at the right time. That means a telescope is not a prerequisite. Binoculars can be an optional aid, but buying equipment will not correct a wrong date, an incorrect location setting or a missed start time. Check the forecast again immediately before going outside, and make sure your phone or browser is using the intended city or GPS position.

NASA and ESA trackers compared
| Need | NASA Spot the Station | ESA tracker |
|---|---|---|
| Current station position | Yes, on the live tracking map | Yes |
| Historical and projected map window | 90 minutes behind and 90 minutes ahead | 90 minutes behind and 90 minutes ahead |
| Location-specific viewing opportunities | Yes; more than 6,700 locations | Not stated |

Choose NASA when you need an actionable local pass time or notification. Open ESA when you want a second current-position display or a compact explanation of the ISS orbit. Neither tracker replaces NASA’s expedition pages for a current crew roster.
Common tracking mistakes to avoid
- Using the map as a visibility forecast: The 90-minute track is global. It does not account for the exact horizon and viewing opportunity at your street. Use NASA’s city or GPS-based sightings result.
- Reading a stale crew summary: NASA’s general overview may show an older expedition description. Open the expedition index and dated mission links instead.
- Confusing local time and map time: Record the date, start time, direction and end time from the local sightings page, then verify them again shortly before going outside.
- Waiting for an overhead pass: A pass can cross the visible portion of your sky without going directly overhead. Follow the stated appearance and disappearance directions.
- Assuming equipment is necessary: ESA says the ISS can be seen with the naked eye at the right time. A paid tracker, telescope or binoculars is not required to locate it.
- Forgetting location permissions: If the app uses GPS, confirm that location access is enabled and that it has selected the place where you actually plan to watch.
These checks also make explanations easier to share. Give someone the official local time and direction, not only a screenshot of a moving dot over a continent.
Keeping your answer accurate as conditions change
- Location: The station’s position changes continuously, so refresh the live map when answering “right now.”
- Pass time: Use the sightings forecast close to the planned observation and verify the selected location.
- Crew: Use the current expedition index and dated mission pages, not an undated copied roster.
- Vehicle schedule: Treat launch, docking and departure times as operational information that can move.
- Page freshness: Prefer NASA pages with a recent update date when two official pages present different expedition information.
NASA’s live map and sightings service are the right references for location and local viewing. NASA’s expedition and mission pages are the right references for crew and operations. Keeping those functions separate prevents a stale overview paragraph or a global map marker from being mistaken for a current local or crew schedule.
A practical checklist
- For “Where is the ISS right now?”, open NASA’s live map or ESA’s tracker.
- For “When will it pass over my location?”, use NASA’s sightings page or GPS-enabled app.
- For alerts, enable notifications in the official NASA app.
- For “Who is currently on the ISS?”, open NASA’s current expedition page and its mission links.
- For a planned viewing, record the local time and direction, then go outside early.
- Do not assume a map crossing is visible or that optical equipment is required.
- Recheck dates because position, pass predictions, crew assignments and vehicle activities are not static.
Quick answers to common ISS tracking questions
Can I track the ISS without installing an app? Yes. NASA’s Spot the Station website provides the live map and location-based sightings. The app adds GPS personalization and alerts but is optional.
How far back and forward does the live map show? NASA’s map shows the station’s path for 90 minutes before the current position and 90 minutes ahead. ESA’s tracker presents the same 90-minute-before and 90-minute-ahead window.
Why does NASA ask me to choose a city? The sightings page calculates opportunities for more than 6,700 locations using data from Johnson Space Center Mission Control. Selecting a city supplies the geographic reference used for the local time and direction. A nearby city is useful when yours is not listed, but it is still an approximation.

Will every pass listed on the map be visible? No. A mapped ground track only shows the orbital route. Use NASA’s local sightings forecast for the viewing opportunity, and follow its start time and direction. ESA confirms that the ISS is visible to the naked eye at the right time, not that every pass is visible from every place.
How often does the ISS go around Earth? ESA gives an orbit period of about 92 minutes. The crew consequently sees 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets each day. Your location will not necessarily have a favorable sighting on every orbit.
Where can I verify who is aboard today? NASA’s International Space Station Expeditions index is the starting point. Open the current expedition and its dated mission links. Use those pages rather than copying names from an undated overview, because launches, dockings and departures can change the roster.
Does the expedition number tell me exactly who is in orbit? No. It identifies the expedition period. NASA lists Expedition 75 as beginning July 26, 2026 and expected to run until spring 2027, but individual crew members can arrive or leave during that interval. Check the current mission updates for a present-tense roster.
Can the trackers tell me what the crew is doing at a particular minute? Not by themselves. Maps answer position questions. For experiments, maintenance, spacewalks, communications events and vehicle operations, use NASA’s dated mission updates and daily station blog, and check the publication date.

Bottom line
Use NASA Spot the Station for the practical workflow: the live map answers where the ISS is, the sightings page or app answers when it may be visible from your location, and the app can alert you. Use ESA’s tracker to cross-check the position and understand the station’s roughly 400-kilometer altitude, 28,800-kilometer-per-hour speed and 92-minute orbit. For “Who is currently on the ISS?” and for launches, dockings or departures, rely on NASA’s current expedition index and dated mission pages. Refresh each source because the station’s position, viewing opportunities, crew roster and operational schedule all change.
