Use NASA’s Live Space Station Tracking Map to see where the International Space Station (ISS) is now and its recent or near-term ground track. Use NASA’s Spot the Station website or app to find a visible pass over a specific location and set alerts. For cargo spacecraft, use NASA’s ISS Visiting Vehicles page for dated launch, docking, undocking, release and splashdown events. NASA does not present that page as one universal, continuously updating position map for every freighter.
The distinction matters: the live map follows the orbiting station itself; the visiting-vehicles page is an event schedule and mission-history resource for spacecraft that travel to or from it.
Choose the right NASA source
| What you need | Best source | What it shows | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISS position right now | NASA Live Space Station Tracking Map | The station’s current location plus a plotted path for 90 minutes before and 90 minutes after the present time | The plotted position changes continuously, so open the map again when you are ready to observe. |
| A visible pass over your location | NASA Spot the Station website or app | Location-specific pass windows, duration and visibility information; the app can send alerts | A predicted opportunity cannot guarantee clear weather or an unobstructed view. |
| Cargo-spacecraft mission status | NASA ISS Visiting Vehicles | Vehicle families and dated launch, capture, docking, undocking, release and splashdown milestones | It is an event chronology, not a verified live map for every individual cargo vehicle. |
These are complementary tools, not competing versions of the same tracker. Start with the question you are trying to answer: the station’s location, a viewing opportunity from your location, or the status of a particular resupply mission.

See the ISS’s current position
- Open NASA’s Live Space Station Tracking Map.
- Read the station marker’s position on the world map. NASA’s display includes the path traveled during the previous 90 minutes and the projected path for the next 90 minutes.
- Use the dark overlay as a day-and-night guide. It marks nighttime on Earth, which helps you understand whether a section of the track is passing over a dark or sunlit region.
- Refresh or reopen the map immediately before observing. The station is moving continuously, and the line you saw earlier is not a permanent position record.
The map’s 90-minute look-back and 90-minute look-ahead are display windows, not a guarantee that every plotted point can be seen from the ground. A line over your country only indicates the spacecraft’s orbital ground track. It does not tell you whether the station is above your local horizon, whether the sky is dark enough, or whether clouds are blocking it.

This map answers “Where is the station?” rather than “Can I see it from my yard right now?” A ground track can cross your region while the station is below your horizon, in daylight, hidden by clouds or outside a favorable illumination angle. Use the location-specific pass tool for an observing decision.
Find the next pass over your location
Use the website
Open NASA’s Spot the Station service and select your location. NASA calculates opportunities for thousands of locations worldwide; its sightings material has described coverage of more than 6,700 locations, but verify that the current page still displays that count when you use it. The site returns pass information for the selected place instead of a generic global forecast.
Record the local date and start time, the expected duration and the visibility information shown for that pass. Check your local weather forecast separately on the same day. Cloud, haze, nearby lighting and buildings can make a mathematically favorable pass impossible to see. A listed opportunity is therefore best treated as a window worth checking, not as a promise.
Use the optional mobile app
NASA describes the Spot the Station app as offering a real-time map, flyover schedules and alerts. Alerts can include the date, time, duration and visibility conditions for the location you selected. The app is optional: the website supplies the core map and pass information without requiring a phone installation.
- Install the official Spot the Station app from the store linked by NASA’s Spot the Station service.
- Allow location access, or enter a city manually if you prefer not to share continuous location data.
- Choose which pass alerts to receive and confirm the time zone displayed by your device.
- When an alert arrives, open the pass details, then check weather and your intended viewing site before going outside.
Alerts are reminders based on orbital predictions, not a promise that the station will be visible. If your phone changes time zones, switches to daylight-saving time or loses permission to use location data, review the app’s settings before relying on a notification. Comparing the alert with the website’s current pass details is a useful way to catch a stale location or clock setting.
How to recognize a visible ISS pass
NASA recommends looking within a few hours before or after local sunrise or sunset. At those times, the station can still be illuminated by the Sun while the observer’s sky is dark enough to provide contrast. A pass listed by the service may therefore be invisible at midday even though the station is overhead. The same geometry explains why a bright pass can fade as the station enters Earth’s shadow.
NASA describes the station as resembling an airplane or a very bright star moving across the night sky, except that it does not flash or change direction. A steady light that gradually crosses the sky is consistent with the ISS; repeated flashes, abrupt turns or aircraft-style navigation lights point to something else.

- Arrive at the viewing spot a few minutes before the listed start time.
- Choose the clearest broad view of the sky available, away from trees, walls and direct outdoor lighting.
- Use the pass duration and visibility details to know when to begin and how long to watch.
- Check clouds and haze independently. NASA’s prediction cannot account for every local obstruction or sudden weather change.
- Start with unaided eyes. NASA’s guidance is designed to help people find naked-eye opportunities; binoculars or a telescope are optional observing aids, not tracking requirements.
The station moves quickly because it circles Earth at about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour). NASA’s Spot the Station information, accessed October 13, 2026, says the ISS completes about 16 orbits each day. Those figures explain why a pass lasts minutes rather than remaining above one location for hours. Do not expect the station to sit over one town or follow the same route at the same local time every day.
Where the ISS position data comes from
NASA says flight controllers at the International Space Station Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center in Houston generate the station’s trajectory data as it passes over Earth. Controllers monitor the station’s location and course and assess potential collision risks. The public map is therefore a NASA operational-data presentation, not a crowd-sourced pin or a static illustration.
The 90-minute historical and 90-minute forward span on the map is a display window. It is not a claim that every point in the future path will be visible from the ground. Visibility still depends on local horizon geometry, sunlight, darkness and weather. Because the plotted marker is continuously changing, a screenshot is useful only as a record of when it was taken, not as a current location report.
Track visiting cargo spacecraft
Use NASA’s visiting-vehicles page for mission events
Open NASA’s ISS Visiting Vehicles page when you need to know which cargo craft are scheduled to launch, approach, dock, undock, release a payload or splash down. The page groups the station’s visiting systems and records dated events across the mission cycle.
NASA identifies resupply providers including the European Space Agency, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Roscosmos, Northrop Grumman and SpaceX. Vehicle families named on NASA’s material include Progress, Dragon, Cygnus, Japan’s HTV and HTV-X, and the former European Automated Transfer Vehicle. These names identify different spacecraft programs; they are not separate layers on the ISS live-position map.
Terms in an event list describe different operational steps. A launch sends the vehicle toward orbit. An approach or rendezvous brings it near the station. Capture or docking records how it is attached to the station. Undocking or release marks departure from the station, while splashdown describes the end of a returning vehicle’s mission when that applies. Reading the event type prevents confusing a launch date with an arrival date.
Read dates as either completed or planned
Mission pages can contain both historical milestones and future plans. Read the wording and date in context: a listed launch, docking or release may already have happened, while another entry may be a planned target that can move as operations change. NASA’s page reviewed for the current mission cycle listed a Cygnus NG-24 release on October 9, 2026, and also displayed 2026 events involving SpaceX CRS and Progress vehicles. Treat October 9, 2026 as the dated entry shown by NASA, not as a timeless or independently verified schedule.

NASA’s station overview and event listings are snapshots of a changing configuration. A vehicle can be attached on one date and gone on another, and the order or target date of later events can change. Recheck the NASA page immediately before an event. Cargo timelines can change because of launch readiness, weather, station traffic, spacecraft health and other operational constraints. If NASA revises an event, the newer page entry takes precedence over an old calendar reminder, screenshot or social-media post.
What the page cannot tell you
The visiting-vehicles chronology can tell you that a craft is expected to launch or that a docking or release milestone occurred. The reviewed NASA sources do not establish one public, real-time tracker that displays the continuously changing position of every cargo vehicle between those milestones. Do not use the ISS map’s marker as if it were a separate icon for a Dragon, Cygnus, Progress or other freighter: the map represents the station.
That limitation is especially important during rendezvous. A cargo vehicle may be close to the station but not yet attached, or it may have departed while the station continues along its normal orbit. The public tools covered here answer those situations differently: the map shows the station’s location, while the visiting-vehicles page records the mission milestone.
A practical workflow for a launch, arrival or departure
- Identify the vehicle and event. On NASA’s visiting-vehicles page, note the spacecraft family and whether the entry concerns launch, capture, docking, undocking, release or splashdown.
- Write down the date and status. Preserve the date exactly as NASA displays it and label the entry planned or completed based on the page wording.
- Check for a newer NASA update. Visit the same page again close to the event because cargo schedules and station configurations can change.
- Follow the station separately. If your goal is to know where the ISS is, use the live map. Its marker is the station, even when a cargo craft is approaching or attached.
- Confirm the milestone. After the operation, look for NASA’s updated event entry or station update rather than assuming that the original target time occurred exactly as planned.
- For a visual sighting, switch back to pass tools. A cargo event date alone does not provide a local naked-eye viewing time. Use Spot the Station for an ISS pass and check weather independently.
If you are explaining an event to someone else, include the vehicle name, the event verb and the date together. “Cygnus release on October 9, 2026” is more precise than saying simply that “Cygnus is leaving,” because the latter does not indicate whether the statement is a plan or a completed operation.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Using the ISS map to search for a freighter | The map’s position marker and track describe the station. | Use NASA’s visiting-vehicles chronology for cargo milestones. |
| Treating a pass prediction as a guarantee | Cloud, haze, local obstructions and lighting can prevent an observation. | Check the forecast and viewing site independently. |
| Looking at midday because the station is overhead | The station may not be favorably illuminated against a dark sky. | Prefer the hours around sunrise or sunset listed by NASA. |
| Expecting aircraft-style flashing lights | The ISS normally appears as a steady moving point. | Look for a bright, non-flashing object that does not abruptly change direction. |
| Assuming an old event date is still valid | Launch and docking plans can move. | Recheck NASA’s dated entry immediately before following it. |
| Buying specialist optics to use the tracker | Optics do not supply the orbital data, and NASA’s service is designed for naked-eye opportunities. | Start with the free NASA map, website or app; add binoculars only if you want an observing aid. |
| Confusing the station’s ground track with a visibility path | The track can cross a region when the station is below the horizon or in daylight. | Use the location-specific pass forecast and its visibility details. |
| Reporting a planned milestone as completed | Event pages can mix past entries with targets that later move. | Use NASA’s wording and check for a later update. |
When the map or alert seems wrong
The marker is not over my city
The station is orbiting, not hovering over a fixed point. A ground track can pass hundreds of kilometers from your location while the station remains below your local horizon. Use the location selector for an actual pass window rather than judging visibility from the world map alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The alert time conflicts with my clock
Confirm the device time zone, daylight-saving setting and the location saved in Spot the Station. Compare the alert with the pass details on NASA’s website. A manually entered city and a phone’s automatic location can produce different local results.
The pass was predicted but nothing appeared
Check whether clouds or haze covered the relevant part of the sky and whether the viewing site had a clear horizon. Also confirm that you watched during the entire listed window. The prediction describes an opportunity; it cannot remove local weather or visibility limits. An apparently empty sky does not by itself mean the station tracker failed.

A cargo event has no live icon
That is expected from the sources covered here. NASA’s visiting-vehicles page supplies dated mission events, while the live map follows the ISS. Look for a newer NASA event update instead of interpreting the absence of a cargo icon as a failed mission.
The map shows nighttime somewhere else
The dark overlay represents night on Earth across the map, not a promise that your own sky is dark. Your local sunrise, sunset, horizon and weather still control whether you can see a pass.

Do you need equipment or a paid tracker?
No. NASA’s map, website, app and mission updates provide the core tracking information without a telescope, binoculars or a paid service. The Spot the Station guidance is built around finding naked-eye opportunities. Binoculars can be an optional observing aid, but they do not improve the underlying orbital prediction, and a printed guide or model cannot show changing position or mission status.
For this topic, the most direct answer is therefore the free official NASA tools. An equipment purchase may be enjoyable for an astronomy hobby, but it is not a requirement for locating the ISS or checking a cargo mission milestone.
Keep the information current
NASA’s live map is inherently time-sensitive, and cargo-event pages are subject to operational updates. Bookmark the official map and the visiting-vehicles page rather than relying on copied screenshots. Before publishing or sharing a date, verify the page again and state whether the event is planned or completed. NASA’s overview material can also help explain the station’s current configuration and visiting-vehicle context: International Space Station overview.
For most observers, the complete reliable workflow is simple: map for the ISS position, Spot the Station for a local viewing opportunity, and the visiting-vehicles page for cargo mission milestones. Keeping those three purposes separate prevents the most common tracking errors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Can I view a live map of the International Space Station’s location?
Yes. NASA’s Live Space Station Tracking Map shows the station’s current location and a plotted path for the previous 90 minutes and next 90 minutes. Reopen it when you need a current position because the marker moves continuously.

How do I spot the International Space Station?
Use NASA Spot the Station to select your location and check the next pass, duration and visibility details. Look within a few hours of sunrise or sunset, check weather separately and watch for a bright, steady object that does not flash or abruptly change direction.
Does the ISS map track Dragon, Cygnus or Progress spacecraft?
No. The live map represents the ISS. Use NASA’s ISS Visiting Vehicles page for dated launch, capture, docking, undocking, release and splashdown events involving cargo vehicles.
Does a NASA pass alert guarantee that I will see the station?
No. An alert is an orbital prediction for your selected location. Clouds, haze, buildings, local lighting, daylight and an obstructed horizon can prevent visibility.

The NASA sources covered here provide a dated visiting-vehicles chronology rather than one universal public live map for every cargo craft. Check NASA’s latest event entry and distinguish planned milestones from completed ones.
Do I need a telescope or binoculars?
No. NASA’s Spot the Station service is designed to help people find naked-eye opportunities. Binoculars or a telescope are optional observing aids, not tracking requirements.
The Bottom Line
Use NASA’s Live Space Station Tracking Map for the ISS position, Spot the Station for a location-specific visible pass and alerts, and NASA’s ISS Visiting Vehicles page for dated cargo-mission milestones. The map tracks the station—not each freighter—and every pass or event date should be checked again because visibility and operations can change.
