Track shipbuilding as three separate datasets: new contracts and orders (future work), actual vessel deliveries (yard output), and the fleet in service (the existing stock). Add a fourth, carefully defined layer for shipyard capacity. A contract is not a delivery, a yard count is not a capacity measure, and vessel counts cannot be compared directly with gross tonnage (GT), compensated gross tonnage (CGT), or deadweight tonnage (DWT).

The most reproducible public starting point is UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) maritime data and its metadata. For named vessels, individual yards, order status and more frequent commercial updates, a specialist register such as Clarksons Research’s World Fleet Register or Shipping Intelligence Network can supplement the public series. Build an audit trail containing the source, definition, observation date and status for every figure.

What you are actually measuring

Contracts and orders: future workload

An order record represents a signed contract, an announced order or another status defined by the data provider. It belongs in a forward-looking ledger. Capture the order date, builder, vessel type, number of hulls, ordering party when reported, measurement unit and expected delivery date. Keep options, provisional agreements and firm contracts in distinct status fields; do not add them together unless the source explicitly defines them as one series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expected delivery is an estimate, not output. Preserve each previous estimate so you can measure postponements, cancellations and schedule slippage instead of overwriting the history.

Deliveries: completed yard output

A delivery is a vessel completed and handed over according to the source’s definition. Record the actual completion or delivery date, yard, vessel type and delivered measure. A vessel should enter the output ledger only when the delivery event has occurred. Comparing deliveries with orders is meaningful only when the periods, vessel classes, geography and units match.

Fleet in service: the stock already operating

Fleet statistics describe vessels existing at a specified reference date. They are neither orders nor annual production. State the population and cutoff, such as commercial ships of at least 100 GT at the start of 2026, and distinguish total fleet, merchant fleet, ownership fleet and flag fleet. A fleet total can rise through deliveries, decline through scrapping, or change when vessels move between classifications.

Capacity: productive ability, not a headcount

Capacity describes what a facility can produce under stated physical and operating constraints. A list of yards, an orderbook or a count of yards that were active during a year does not establish standardized capacity. UN Trade and Development states: “Assessing the number of shipyards and their capacity depends on wide-ranging factors, including the size and range of ships.”

Set the scope before collecting numbers

Write a one-sentence measurement specification before opening a dataset. It should identify:

  • Purpose: global trend, country comparison, vessel-type outlook, named-yard workload or an individual vessel’s status.
  • Period: calendar year, beginning-of-year snapshot, end-of-year snapshot or an in-period observation.
  • Geography: builder country, yard location, flag, owner domicile or another explicit basis.
  • Population: commercial ships only or commercial and naval vessels; minimum size threshold; vessel types included.
  • Unit: vessel count, GT, CGT, DWT or another source-defined measure.
  • Status rules: how firm orders, options, cancellations, postponements and estimated deliveries are treated.

UNCTAD shipbuilding and recycling statistics cover commercial ships of 100 GT and above. Some ownership comparisons use ships of 1,000 GT and above. Those thresholds are not interchangeable, so put the threshold in every chart title, table heading and exported filename.

Build three ledgers and a separate capacity file

Do not force orders, deliveries and fleet stock into one table. Use a common vessel or project identifier where available, but keep event dates and definitions separate.

Order ledger

Field What to record
Project or hull identifier Provider identifier, yard hull number or another stable key
Order date Date the order was reported or confirmed, with the source’s date precision
Status Confirmed order, option, announced agreement, postponed, cancelled or other provider label
Builder and facility Legal yard name and physical facility when separately identified
Vessel type and size class Keep the source classification; do not silently map unlike types
Quantity Number of vessels covered by that status
Measure GT, CGT, DWT or vessel count, with the unit attached
Expected delivery Month, quarter or year as reported; retain prior estimates
Source and snapshot Provider, publication/update date and your extraction date

Delivery ledger

Use the same identity and classification fields, but replace order date and expected delivery with actual completion or handover date. Record whether the source calls the event “delivered,” “completed,” “launched” or another term. Launching alone is not necessarily delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fleet-stock ledger

Record the reference date, flag or ownership basis, vessel type, size threshold, vessel count and capacity measure. Keep stock observations separate from annual additions and removals. A figure such as 2.5 billion DWT on 1 January 2026 is a fleet-capacity stock, not the tonnage built during 2025.

Capacity evidence file

For each yard or facility, store only stated or documented evidence: dry-dock and berth dimensions, building positions, production lines, workforce, cranes, block throughput, annualized output, vessel-size range, financing or operating status and the date of the evidence. Mark whether a value is designed capacity, practical capacity, current utilization or an observed orderbook. Never infer a national capacity figure from the number of yards.

Use layered sources for different questions

UNCTADstat and the maritime data hub

UNCTAD’s public hub links datasets on ships built by country and merchant fleets by flag, type and ownership, together with metadata. It is useful for repeatable country and global context because the population, units and reference dates are documented. Its aggregate series do not by themselves constitute a complete, live yard-level orderbook.

The hub reported an update date of 18 June 2026 for the 2026 maritime statistics. Treat those values as dated snapshots, not a real-time contract feed. The Review of Maritime Transport 2025 contains figures based on 2024 activity and the start of 2025, so label those reference periods rather than presenting them as current-year observations.

Specialist vessel registers

Clarksons Research describes its World Fleet Register and Shipping Intelligence Network as covering vessel and fleet information, including shipbuilding-related details. These systems can support ship-by-ship and named-yard monitoring. Coverage, order-status fields, update frequency and subscription entitlements may differ by product and user level; confirm the provider’s definitions before using a field in a published comparison.

When combining a commercial register with UNCTAD, retain both original values and classifications. Do not assume that “orderbook,” “on order,” “contracted” or “expected delivery” have the same inclusion rules across providers.

Step-by-step tracking workflow

  1. Write the measurement specification. Fix the geography, commercial or naval scope, vessel-size threshold, vessel types, period and unit. Decide whether the question concerns orders, deliveries, stock or physical capacity.
  2. Create stable identifiers. Use an IMO number for an existing vessel when available, and a provider or yard hull identifier for a vessel under construction. Keep a separate project identifier for multi-vessel contracts.
  3. Load aggregate baselines. Import the relevant UNCTAD series with its reference date, update date, unit and population. Save the original download or table extract so later revisions can be audited.
  4. Load vessel-level records. Add specialist-register records for the yards, vessels and contracts that require detail. Store the provider’s status label exactly as supplied before creating any normalized status.
  5. Separate events. Place each contract in the order ledger, each verified handover in the delivery ledger and each reference-date fleet observation in the stock ledger. Do not convert an expected delivery into an actual delivery.
  6. Version estimates. When an expected delivery changes, append a new observation with the new date and retain the old estimate. This makes slippage measurable and prevents a schedule change from looking like a new order.
  7. Reconcile identities. Match vessel name changes, hull numbers and IMO numbers carefully. Flag one-to-many and many-to-one matches for manual review rather than automatically merging them.
  8. Apply unit checks. Reject rows missing GT, CGT, DWT or vessel-count labels. Keep the source unit even if you calculate a secondary metric; never overwrite the original.
  9. Publish an audit trail. Put the observation date, source publication or update date, geography, vessel scope, threshold, unit and status definition next to every chart or table.

Keep GT, CGT, DWT and vessel counts distinct

Measure What it represents Typical use in this workflow
Vessel count Number of ships or contracts Counting units, yards or projects; highly sensitive to vessel-size mix
GT (gross tonnage) A measure of a ship’s enclosed internal volume UNCTAD shipbuilding and recycling populations and gross-tonnage comparisons
CGT (compensated gross tonnage) An industry productivity measure that adjusts gross tonnage for vessel type and complexity Industry comparisons where the source explicitly reports CGT
DWT (deadweight tonnage) Cargo-carrying capacity, including the weight a vessel can safely carry Fleet carrying-capacity stock and cargo-capacity comparisons

Do not add GT and CGT, convert vessel counts to DWT without a documented method, or describe DWT as shipyard output. If two sources report different units, show them in separate columns and explain why a direct ranking would mislead. A country can lead by vessel count while another leads by gross tonnage because their vessel-size mixes differ.

How to evaluate shipyard capacity

Facility constraints

Capture the dimensions and number of dry docks, building berths, covered halls, cranes, launch systems and block-assembly lines when documented. A yard that can build many small vessels may not be able to build a single very large ship, and a large dock does not prove that the yard is staffed or equipped for continuous production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Workforce and throughput

Record workforce size, shifts, subcontractor dependence, block throughput and recent completed output only when the source states the measurement date and method. Distinguish theoretical design capacity from practical capacity under current labor, financing, material and equipment constraints.

Orderbook as utilization evidence

An orderbook indicates booked work, not maximum capability. Compare booked hulls with the yard’s vessel-size range, delivery slots and historical completion rate. A long orderbook may reflect multi-year construction times rather than an expansion of physical capacity.

Activity-based yard counts

UNCTAD reported that about 348 operational shipyards worldwide secured new contracts or completed deliveries in 2024. This is an activity-based count: it includes yards meeting either condition and is not a standardized inventory of productive capacity. Ship size and range affect both the count and its interpretation.

Reconcile orders with deliveries without creating false trends

Shipbuilding lead times mean that contracts signed in one year can be delivered several years later. Compare an order cohort with deliveries in subsequent periods, not only within the same calendar year. For each cohort, calculate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • contracts by vessel count and by the reported tonnage measure;
  • deliveries linked to that cohort;
  • cancellations and conversions;
  • the share still scheduled and the latest expected delivery window;
  • median or average schedule movement only when the underlying dates are sufficiently complete.

Use explicit status transitions such as ordered → scheduled → laid down → launched → delivered, but only map a provider’s labels when the provider’s definitions support that mapping. “Launched” is a construction milestone; it should not be counted as delivery unless the source defines it that way.

Useful benchmark figures and how to label them

Figure Correct interpretation
91% of ships completed in 2025 by gross tonnage were built in China, the Republic of Korea or Japan UNCTAD, updated 18 June 2026; a 2025 completed-ship output share measured by GT, not a vessel-count share or current orderbook share
China held 63.7% of the global orderbook by gross tonnage at the start of 2025 UNCTAD’s Review of Maritime Transport 2025, based on Clarksons Research; a start-of-2025 orderbook snapshot measured by GT
About 348 operational shipyards secured new contracts or completed deliveries in 2024 UNCTAD’s 2025 review; an activity count, not a capacity inventory
Around 116,000 merchant-fleet vessels of at least 100 GT at the start of 2026 UNCTAD’s 2026 statistics; a fleet-stock count at a stated size threshold
Around 62,000 vessels over 1,000 GT at the same start-of-2026 reference A different size subset from the 100-GT population; do not combine the two counts
2.5 billion DWT on 1 January 2026, up 85 million DWT from the prior year Fleet carrying-capacity stock measured in DWT; not shipyard output or annual deliveries

Quality controls and common failure modes

“Orders equal production”

Why it fails: contracts precede construction and delivery by years. Fix: maintain separate event dates and link cohorts across time.

“More yards means more capacity”

Why it fails: a yard count ignores ship-size range, docks, workforce, equipment and utilization. Fix: publish yard counts as activity indicators and maintain facility-level evidence separately.

“The largest fleet is the most productive shipbuilding nation”

Why it fails: fleet ownership or flag is a stock measure and may involve vessels built elsewhere. Fix: compare builder location, deliveries, orderbook and fleet stock as separate dimensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“GT, CGT and DWT are interchangeable”

Why it fails: they measure different physical or productivity concepts. Fix: keep units in every field and use a conversion only when a documented methodology is available.

“A current database row is the whole history”

Why it fails: delivery estimates, cancellations and vessel identities change. Fix: retain dated snapshots and append status events.

“A public aggregate series is a live orderbook”

Why it fails: UNCTAD’s public statistics are dated snapshots and do not provide every yard-level contract. Fix: use the aggregate series for context and a specialist register for vessel-level monitoring, with definitions checked for each product.

Design a monitoring dashboard

A useful dashboard has separate panels rather than one blended index:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Orders: new contracts by month or quarter, vessel type, builder country and source unit; show confirmed orders and options separately.
  • Deliveries: completed vessels by period, builder and type; offer vessel count and the source’s tonnage measure in separate views.
  • Orderbook: open contracts by expected delivery year, with cancellations and postponements visible.
  • Fleet stock: vessels and DWT at the same reference date, with the minimum-size threshold shown.
  • Yard evidence: facility constraints, stated capacity, workforce and utilization indicators, each carrying its own source date.

Every visualization should display a “data as of” date and a “published or updated” date. Those dates can differ: a table updated in June 2026 may describe the fleet on 1 January 2026.

How to compare two shipbuilding markets fairly

  1. Match the reference period and snapshot date.
  2. Match the vessel population, minimum GT threshold and commercial or naval scope.
  3. Compare the same unit: vessels with vessels, GT with GT, CGT with CGT and DWT with DWT.
  4. Separate contracts from completed deliveries and fleet stock.
  5. Break results down by vessel type and size class to expose mix effects.
  6. Distinguish yard-level orderbook from national output.
  7. Check update frequency and whether options, cancellations and delayed contracts are included.
  8. State whether the source measures physical productive capacity or only observed orders and deliveries.

Following these rules prevents a high-orderbook country from being described as the highest-output country, and prevents an active-yard count from being presented as a capacity ranking.
