Track SEC leadership and crypto policy with four official records: the current commissioners page, Commission Votes, Speeches and Statements, and the Crypto Newsroom. Log each item’s date, document type, procedural status, docket identifiers, deadlines, and effective date. Because membership and rulemaking status can change quickly, verify the live pages on the day you publish or make a decision.
The official-page system to use
No single SEC page provides a complete monitoring picture. Use each source for the record it is designed to establish, then reconcile the dates and status in your own log.
- Current commissioners page: Use this for the people currently listed as serving. The page path reviewed for this guide redirected to a Hester Peirce resignation-letter PDF, so the current roster and vacancy count must be confirmed on the live page rather than inferred from that redirect.
- Commission Votes: Use this page to establish what the Commission formally voted on. Inspect the live page for its current filters, date range, and historical coverage before relying on an old result.
- Speeches and Statements: This archive lists dated remarks by the Chair, commissioners, and staff. It supports speaker and date filtering and provides an RSS feed. Its October 2026 entries included material on Hester Peirce’s departure and crypto custody.
- Crypto Newsroom: This is a date-and-title index of SEC crypto statements, speeches, and press releases. It listed the October 1, 2026 departure statement and proposed crypto-custody framework, September innovation-exemption items, and the August Regulation Crypto Assets proposal.
Bookmark all four pages. Treat an index entry as a lead to the underlying release, docket, fact sheet, or Federal Register document—not as a substitute for that primary record.
How do I track SEC commissioner vacancies?
Verify the roster before counting seats
Open the SEC’s current commissioners page directly and confirm that it loads a roster rather than a document or redirect. Record every listed commissioner, the Chair designation, and the date you checked it. Do not publish a vacancy number based solely on a resignation statement, a news item, or a search-result snippet.

The reviewed landing path redirected to a resignation-letter PDF associated with Hester Peirce. That document is evidence of a departure statement, not a complete statement of who occupies every seat. A seat should be marked vacant only after the current roster and any appointment or confirmation record support that conclusion.
Maintain a vacancy event log
For each change, create one dated entry with these fields:
- Person and role: Record the commissioner’s name, whether the person was Chair or commissioner, and the seat if the SEC identifies one.
- Event date: Keep the date on the statement, resignation letter, nomination, confirmation, swearing-in, or other primary document.
- Record type: Label the item as a statement, appointment announcement, confirmation, oath, or roster update.
- Operational status: Use precise terms such as announced, resigned, effective departure, nominated, confirmed, serving, or vacancy shown on the current roster.
- Source trail: Save the SEC page title and the underlying document or docket reference.
- Last checked: Add the date you revisited the roster, because a later appointment can change the answer without changing an older statement.
The Speeches and Statements archive is useful for finding an individual’s explanation or announcement. It does not, by itself, prove the Commission’s current membership. Reconcile it with the live roster and, where relevant, the official appointment or confirmation record.

A commissioner can announce a departure before the effective date, and a seat can remain listed until the SEC updates its roster. Keep separate columns for the announcement date and the date the seat is actually shown as unoccupied. If those dates cannot yet be established, describe the situation as an announced or reported departure and state that occupancy is awaiting confirmation.

Where can I find SEC commissioner votes?
Start with the Commission Votes page
Use the Commission Votes page for the formal action record. The page’s existence is confirmed, but its detailed filters and historical coverage should be checked on the live version before you describe how far back its records extend or how it can be searched.
- Open the page and use its available date, subject, or document controls.
- Open the individual vote record, not just the index line.
- Capture the meeting or action date, matter title, file or release number, and the result.
- Note whether the record concerns an adoption, proposal, exemption, appointment, enforcement action, or another Commission matter.
- Follow the linked release or order and compare its language with the vote record.
- Store the page’s retrieval date in your log.
Do not convert a commissioner’s view into Commission action
A commissioner’s speech, dissent, concurrence, or other statement explains an individual position. It does not establish that the Commission adopted the position. For an action claim, require both the Commission vote record and the associated order, release, or rule publication. If you have only a speech, write that the commissioner advocated, criticized, or described an approach; do not write that the SEC adopted it.
Record procedural status precisely
Use the status that appears in the primary document: announced, proposed, comment period open, comment period closed, adopted, published, or effective. “The SEC discussed” and “the Commission voted to adopt” are materially different statements. Keep the vote date separate from the Federal Register publication date and the effective date.
How do I follow SEC crypto policy changes?
Use the Crypto Newsroom as the crypto index
The Crypto Newsroom provides a dated title index for crypto-related statements, speeches, and press releases. Review it by date, then open the full document. On October 1, 2026, it listed a departure statement and a proposed crypto-custody framework. Earlier entries included September innovation-exemption items and the August Regulation Crypto Assets proposal.

For an individual policy view, cross-check the Speeches and Statements archive and use its speaker and date filters. Its RSS feed can provide ongoing notifications, but an RSS item still needs to be opened and logged as the underlying document.
Follow the docket, not just the headline
When the newsroom points to a proposed rule or interpretation, follow the links to the proposing release, fact sheet, docket, and Federal Register version. Those documents establish the legal text, comment process, publication date, and effective date. A press release can announce an action without supplying the final calendar deadline.
Three developments that show how to classify crypto policy
March 17, 2026: SEC–CFTC crypto interpretation
The SEC and CFTC issued an interpretation on March 17, 2026 concerning federal securities laws and certain crypto assets and transactions. The SEC docket gives March 23, 2026 as both the Federal Register publication date and the effective date. This is an interpretive action, not a proposed rule awaiting comments.
The SEC describes coverage of digital commodities, collectibles, tools, stablecoins, and digital securities. It also addresses how a crypto asset that is not itself a security can become, or cease to be, subject to an investment contract, along with airdrops, protocol mining, protocol staking, and wrapping. The CFTC supplied related guidance; the SEC announcement describes the agencies as providing consistent administration of the Commodity Exchange Act and federal securities laws.

SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins said in the March 17 announcement: “This is what regulatory agencies are supposed to do: draw clear lines in clear terms,”
When logging this item, mark it as an interpretation with a March 23 effective date. Do not label it a final rule or imply that every crypto asset falls into one category described in the release.
August 18, 2026: proposed Regulation Crypto Assets framework
The SEC issued the Regulation Crypto Assets proposal on August 18, 2026. Its docket identifies File No. S7-2026-27 and Release Nos. 33-11434 and 34-106150. The docket lists Federal Register publication on August 21, 2026 and a comment deadline of October 20, 2026.

The proposal described two offering exemptions:

These are proposed ceilings, not amounts authorized under an effective final rule. The October 20 date is the deadline listed on the SEC docket as of the stated update; verify the live docket before relying on it, because a notice, extension, or later Commission action can change the procedural status.

October 1, 2026: proposed crypto-custody framework
On October 1, 2026, the SEC announced proposed amendments concerning crypto custody by registered investment advisers and regulated funds. The proposal describes allowing self-custody in certain circumstances and using state trust companies as custodians.
The comment period is 60 days after publication of the proposing release in the Federal Register. The press release alone does not establish the calendar deadline. To calculate it, locate the Federal Register publication date in the release docket, count the stated period under the applicable notice, and check the docket for corrections, extensions, or a subsequent Commission action.

- Exact document title.
- File number, release number, docket number, or other identifier.
- Record type: roster update, vote, statement, press release, interpretation, proposed rule, final rule, or effective action.
- Procedural status at the time you checked it.
- Subject and affected group, such as offering issuers, registered investment advisers, or regulated funds.
- Comment deadline, if one exists, with the source of the date.
- Federal Register publication date and effective date, keeping them in separate fields.
- Source page and date last checked.
For a proposal, add a field for whether comments are open, closed, extended, or superseded. For an interpretation or final rule, add the effective date and any implementation language. For a vacancy, add both the announcement date and the date the roster reflects the change.
How to monitor changes without missing a deadline
Set a weekly review cycle
Read the Crypto Newsroom and Commission Votes page at least weekly during an active rulemaking period. Review the Speeches and Statements RSS feed for new remarks, then open the source document and update your ledger. A feed alert is a discovery mechanism, not a legal-status determination.
Use a short freshness window
Add a visible “last checked” date to every guide, spreadsheet, or internal memo. The records reviewed for this guide were checked on October 13, 2026, with a seven-day freshness window that reaches October 20, 2026. Recheck on or before that date, and recheck immediately before publication if the item involves a deadline, vacancy, or proposal status.

Common tracking mistakes and fixes
- Counting a resignation as a vacancy immediately: Separate the announcement from the effective departure and verify the current roster.
- Treating a speech as a vote: Use the Commission Votes record and primary action document before claiming adoption.
- Calling a proposal a rule: Label Regulation Crypto Assets and the custody framework as proposed unless a later record shows adoption and effectiveness.
- Using the press-release date as the comment deadline: For the custody proposal, calculate the period from Federal Register publication, not October 1 alone.
- Combining issue, publication, comment, and effective dates: Keep each date in its own field.
- Ignoring agency coordination: For joint crypto matters, read both the SEC interpretation and the related CFTC guidance.
- Relying on an old page capture: Preserve historical entries, but always add a current last-checked date and inspect the live docket.
A practical publication checklist
- Does the current commissioners page load, and does your roster statement reflect the date checked?
- Have you identified the formal vote record for every claim that says the Commission acted?
- Is each crypto item labeled as a statement, interpretation, proposed rule, final rule, or effective action?
- Are issue date, Federal Register date, comment deadline, and effective date shown separately?
- For Regulation Crypto Assets, are File No. S7-2026-27 and Release Nos. 33-11434 and 34-106150 recorded correctly?
- For the custody proposal, did you verify the Federal Register publication date before stating a calendar deadline?
- Did you record the source title, source page, and last-checked date?
- Have you removed any vacancy count or procedural claim that the live records do not establish?
