To track a flight, open a live aircraft map such as Flightradar24, FlightAware, or ADS-B Exchange, then search for the flight number, aircraft registration, or a nearby location. Select the aircraft marker to see its reported position, altitude, speed, route and other available details. A flight path is built from surveillance reports and supporting data, so treat the marker as the service’s latest processed position—not a guaranteed view of the aircraft at this exact second.

This guide explains which search method to use, how the map gets its data, why a path can lag or disappear, and what you need if you want to receive ADS-B broadcasts yourself.

Start tracking in under a minute

Most people need only a browser or phone. You do not need an aviation receiver, an account or specialist knowledge to look up a scheduled flight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open a live map. Choose Flightradar24, FlightAware or ADS-B Exchange. Their coverage, data sources and delay policies differ, so a result on one map may not match another.
  2. Search with the most specific identifier you have. Enter the airline flight number for a scheduled passenger flight. If you are watching a particular aircraft, use its registration (the tail-number identifier). If you do not know either, use the map around your location.
  3. Select the aircraft marker. The information panel normally shows the latest reported or calculated position, altitude, ground speed, heading, callsign or flight number when available, and a line representing the observed or reconstructed track.
  4. Check the timestamp and status. Look for the service’s “last seen,” update time, departure and arrival fields, or any delay notice. A moving icon does not prove that the position is instantaneous.
  5. Read the path as a data trail. A line can contain gaps, straight segments between reports, or a change from a predicted route to an observed route. Do not assume every point is a direct GPS recording.

Choose a map for the question you are asking

There is no single universally best tracker. Choose according to whether you need schedule context, a broad public map, or a receiver-network view of aircraft near you.

Service What its own documentation says it uses Useful when Timing or coverage qualification
Flightradar24 A global ADS-B receiver network supplemented by MLAT, satellite ADS-B, radar in North America and Australia, and other data used to enrich aircraft details. You want a general-purpose map with flight and aircraft context. The exact mix varies by region and aircraft. A displayed position is not necessarily an instantaneous GPS view.
FlightAware Government, airline, commercial-provider and receiver-network information, with multiple surveillance and schedule feeds. You want a flight lookup combined with operational status and route information. FlightAware says website data is typically delayed 30 seconds from real time and that a map position can lag by 1–2 minutes.
ADS-B Exchange Reports from its global feeder network displayed on a live web and mobile map. You are watching aircraft around a location and value a feeder-network display. It says the map can refresh as often as every 250 milliseconds. That refresh rate does not mean every aircraft report is only 250 milliseconds old; feed age and coverage still control freshness.

These are provider descriptions, not an independent feature test. Compare the maps by checking your area, the aircraft you care about, the details shown and the stated delay. A service may have excellent coverage at one airport and limited visibility a few kilometres away.

Use the right search method

Search by flight number

For a scheduled airline flight, the flight number is usually the fastest starting point. Enter the airline designator and number exactly as shown on your itinerary or airport display. Several flights can reuse a number on different dates, so select the entry with the correct departure airport, destination and date or time.

If the search returns a schedule but no aircraft marker, the flight may not have departed, may be operating under a different callsign, or may be outside the service’s current coverage. Confirm the operational status in the details panel rather than assuming that a schedule entry represents a live position.

Search by aircraft registration

A registration identifies the airframe rather than a particular trip. It is useful for tracking a charter, private aircraft or a plane whose commercial flight number is unknown. Registration formats differ by country, and the map may display the identifier with or without punctuation. Check the aircraft type and recent route to ensure you selected the intended airframe.

Search the map around you

For “How can I see planes flying overhead?”, pan and zoom to your location, then select nearby markers. Enable an altitude, aircraft-type or callsign filter if the service provides one. A location view is also the best method for helicopters, general aviation, military aircraft and other traffic that may not have a publicly searchable airline flight number.

Your phone’s location permission can center the map, but it does not improve the service’s aircraft reception. If you are indoors or near tall buildings, use the map as an approximate local view and verify the marker’s timestamp.

What the marker and path actually mean

The marker is the latest available report

Trackers receive reports at intervals, process them and then deliver a map update. The marker therefore represents the service’s latest usable position, which may already be tens of seconds or minutes old. A smooth animation between points is a display technique; it does not create new measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The line can combine observed and supporting information

A path may include directly received positions, positions calculated from signal timing, and route or schedule information. Some services draw a line between the last two reports; others may show a planned route or an estimated continuation when reports are temporarily unavailable. Look for a legend, timestamp or “estimated” indicator before treating every segment as observed.

Altitude, speed and heading need context

Altitude may be pressure altitude reported by the transponder rather than a surveyed height above the ground. Ground speed is different from airspeed and changes with wind. A heading arrow can lag during a turn because the display waits for a new report. These values are useful for situational awareness, not for precise navigation.

How a flight gets from the aircraft to the map

ADS-B broadcasts the core position data

ADS-B Out-equipped aircraft broadcast GPS-derived location, altitude, ground speed and other information to ground stations and nearby aircraft. Receivers collect those transmissions and forward them to tracking services. The Federal Aviation Administration describes ADS-B as providing “Real-time precision, shared situational awareness, advanced applications for pilots and controllers alike – these are the hallmarks of ADS-B NextGen surveillance.”

ADS-B is a major source, but it is not a universal window into every aircraft. The aircraft must be equipped and transmitting, and a receiver must be able to hear the signal.

MLAT calculates a position from several receivers

Some transponder transmissions do not contain a directly usable position. Multilateration (MLAT) estimates the position by comparing the time a signal reaches multiple receivers. FlightAware says its MLAT calculation requires the aircraft to be within line of sight of four or more receivers. That requirement explains why MLAT coverage can be strong near a dense receiver network and absent over a remote or obstructed area.

Satellite, radar and operational feeds fill gaps

Flightradar24 says it supplements its terrestrial ADS-B network with satellite ADS-B, MLAT, radar in North America and Australia, and additional data used to enrich aircraft details. FlightAware says its display aggregates government, airline, commercial-provider and receiver-network information. The sources and processing order vary by service and region, so two maps can show different timestamps, labels or paths for the same aircraft.

Why a “live” map can be late

Service processing adds delay

Every handoff—aircraft transmission, receiver forwarding, provider processing and browser delivery—can add time. FlightAware explicitly reports a typical 30-second website delay and says a map position may lag by 1–2 minutes. That is a provider-reported operating characteristic, not a guarantee for every flight or location.

A fast interface refresh is not the same as a fresh aircraft measurement. ADS-B Exchange’s statement that its map refreshes as often as every 250 milliseconds describes how often the display can request or render updates; it does not promise that each aircraft report was generated 250 milliseconds earlier.

Coverage is uneven

Terrestrial receivers need a usable radio path. Mountains, buildings, curvature of the Earth, weather-related signal conditions and gaps between receivers can interrupt reports. Satellite reception and radar can extend coverage, but they are not available in identical areas and may have their own processing delays.

The aircraft may not be visible to that service

An aircraft can be absent because it lacks the relevant transmitter, is not within a receiver network, is below the network’s line of sight, or is represented by a source the service does not use. Some operators or authorities may also limit the public display of identifying information. Do not infer an emergency or route change solely from a missing marker.

Why a plane is not showing: a troubleshooting checklist

When you ask, “Why isn’t a plane showing on the flight tracker?”, work through these checks in order:

  • Confirm the identifier. Recheck the airline code, flight number, date and departure airport. A codeshare can have more than one commercial number.
  • Check whether it has departed. A scheduled listing can exist before the aircraft is moving. Look for an actual departure time and a current status.
  • Search by registration. If the flight number produces no marker, the airframe’s registration may be visible under a different callsign.
  • Zoom out and inspect the region. A marker can appear outside the airport boundary after takeoff, or the map may be centered on the wrong city with a similar name.
  • Try another service. Different receiver networks and feeds have different geographic coverage. A second map can distinguish a coverage gap from a flight-status issue.
  • Read the last-update time. A stale marker or broken line indicates missing recent reports, not necessarily that the aircraft landed or changed course.
  • Check filters and browser state. Turn off aircraft-type, altitude or airline filters, refresh the page, and verify that the map is not in a paused or playback mode.

If all services lack the aircraft, use the airline or airport’s operational status for schedule information. A public tracker cannot prove the position of an aircraft it cannot receive or identify.

Track aircraft overhead more effectively

Set a useful map view

  1. Center the map on your town or observation point.
  2. Choose a zoom level that shows the surrounding approach and departure corridors rather than only your street.
  3. Use the service’s aircraft filters to remove ground vehicles, distant traffic or types you do not need.
  4. Select a marker and note altitude, heading and last update before looking up at the sky.
  5. Refresh or let the map update naturally; avoid treating a marker that has not changed for several minutes as current.

Match the marker to what you see

Aircraft can be difficult to identify visually, especially at cruising altitude. Use heading and altitude as clues, then compare the displayed aircraft type and callsign. The map’s location is approximate at the time you view it, so a plane may pass overhead before the marker reaches your screen.

Optional project: receive ADS-B yourself

Most readers should simply use a browser or phone. An aviation hobbyist who wants to see local broadcasts independently or contribute data to a feeder network can build a terrestrial ADS-B receiver.

Typical components

  • A compatible USB ADS-B receiver.
  • An antenna designed for the ADS-B frequency range, placed where it has a clear view of the sky.
  • A computer or small single-board computer running the selected feeder software.
  • A reliable network connection and a power supply suitable for the computer and receiver.

FlightAware describes free PiAware and FlightFeeder software for contributing to its terrestrial receiver network. The reviewed information does not establish a particular current hardware model or universal compatibility. Check the feeder software’s supported operating systems, receiver requirements and regional radio rules before buying equipment.

What a home receiver can and cannot do

A receiver can provide a low-latency local view when aircraft are transmitting and within radio line of sight. It will not reveal every aircraft, replace a certified aviation surveillance system or guarantee a position when the signal is blocked. Antenna height and placement often matter more than adding a second display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and identification limits

Aircraft position and identification can raise privacy concerns. The FAA offers a Privacy ICAO Address (PIA) program for eligible U.S.-registered aircraft, subject to stated equipment, callsign and airspace conditions. PIA is a limited FAA program; it is not a universal way to hide an aircraft from every tracker or every data source.

A map may show an aircraft identifier, type, route or approximate position, but that does not identify the people on board. Avoid treating a public label as proof of ownership, passenger identity or operational intent.

Use flight maps responsibly

  • Use the timestamp and service notice whenever making a time-sensitive decision.
  • Do not use a public tracker as a substitute for instructions from an airline, airport, pilot or air-traffic authority.
  • Expect differences between services because they combine different feeds and apply different processing.
  • Consider a missing or stale path an information limit first, not evidence of an unusual event.
  • For a flight you are taking, rely on the airline or airport for gate, cancellation and boarding information; use the map for situational context.

The practical answer to “Where is my flight right now?” is therefore: find it by flight number or registration, select the marker, and interpret the displayed path together with its timestamp and data-source limitations.
