Track at least two reference points: Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI), and record whether each quote is a spot price or a named futures contract. Then explain every significant move through four checks: expected supply, expected demand, inventory direction, and disruptions or financial positioning. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) Markets & Finance hub and the International Energy Agency (IEA) Oil Market Report provide dated market data and context; use the release date and frequency shown for each series rather than treating a changing quote as a permanent fact.
There is no single universal “oil price.” A useful record always identifies the benchmark, crude grade and location, delivery timing, currency, unit, and whether the number is observed, estimated, or forecast.
What to track first
Brent for the global seaborne market
Brent is the benchmark most often used for internationally traded crude and for prices in markets connected to seaborne cargoes. It is a reference, not a claim that every barrel has Brent’s quality or delivery location. Quality differences, freight costs and regional availability create premiums and discounts around the benchmark.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is a major U.S. benchmark. Its delivery location and the infrastructure serving that location matter, so WTI can diverge from Brent when pipelines, storage or regional production conditions change. Both benchmarks usually respond to the same broad global forces, but they will not move by identical amounts at every moment.

Spot prices versus futures prices
A spot quote describes conditions for a prompt physical purchase. A futures quote is the price of a standardized contract for delivery in a specified future month. Futures also incorporate what traders expect about supply, demand, inventories, interest rates, storage and risk, so a futures move can precede a visible change in today’s physical flows.
Label a quote with its contract month. “Oil is at $X” is incomplete if the figure could refer to a spot assessment, the nearest futures contract or a contract several months out. Nearby contracts can expire and roll, producing an apparent jump that is partly a change in the contract being displayed rather than a change in the underlying market.
Where to see reliable prices and market context
EIA Markets & Finance
The EIA Markets & Finance hub brings together current data series, weekly petroleum reporting and the Short-Term Energy Outlook. Use it to find the definition, unit, geography, update schedule and publication date for a series before comparing it with another quote. A weekly inventory number and a daily futures settlement are different observations and should not be treated as interchangeable.
IEA Oil Market Report
The IEA Oil Market Report supplies international analysis covering supply, demand, inventories, prices, refining and trade. Its monthly release is useful for checking whether a price story is local or part of a wider market pattern. Note the report month and publication date: a later release may revise earlier estimates.
A personal tracking sheet
A simple spreadsheet or note is enough. Create one row per observation and record:
- date and time, including the time zone;
- benchmark and crude grade (Brent, WTI or another explicitly named series);
- spot or futures, plus the futures delivery month;
- currency and unit (for example, dollars per barrel, if that is how the source reports it);
- price type, such as intraday quote, closing settlement, estimate or forecast;
- source, release date and update frequency; and
- your explanation of the day’s move, marked as an interpretation rather than an observed fact.
Keeping the metadata prevents a common error: comparing a real-time quote with a prior-day settlement, or a forecast with an observed price, and calling the difference a market move.

A repeatable routine for tracking oil
- Choose the question. For a global price signal, start with Brent; for a U.S. inland exposure, include WTI. If you are evaluating fuel costs in another region, add the local crude or product reference used there.
- Write down the exact series. Record spot or futures, contract month, currency, unit, timestamp and whether the figure is a bid, last trade, settlement, estimate or forecast.
- Check the change in context. Compare with the previous observation and, where useful, the same weekday or period in prior years. Do not mix a percentage change in a futures contract with a dollar change in a spot series.
- Look at supply expectations. Check reported production, OPEC decisions and compliance, non-OPEC output, outages, sanctions or transport constraints. A production target is a plan; actual output can differ.
- Look at demand expectations. Economic activity in OECD and non-OECD economies, transport use, industrial activity and refining demand can alter expected consumption. Forecasts are estimates and may be revised.
- Check inventories. Determine whether crude and petroleum-product stocks rose or fell, where the stocks are located and which period the report covers. Compare with the same calendar quarter in earlier years when seasonality is strong.
- Check disruptions and positioning. Weather, geopolitical events, refinery outages and pipeline problems can change current flows or the perceived risk of future flows. Financial-market activity can amplify a move even before physical data confirm it.
- Separate evidence from expectation. Mark which observations are published data and which are forecasts, futures-implied expectations or your own explanation. EIA cautions that oil-price projections are uncertain; none is a guaranteed outcome.
How supply and demand set the direction
The physical-balance chain
When demand grows faster than available supply, buyers compete for limited barrels and prices tend to rise. When supply exceeds consumption at prevailing prices, unsold barrels move into storage, inventories build and prices can face downward pressure. This is a tendency, not a mechanical one-day rule: expectations about future availability can move futures prices before current production or consumption changes.
Why small disruptions can cause large moves
In the short run, both sides of the market adjust slowly. Bringing new production capacity online takes time, and households and businesses cannot immediately replace petroleum-using vehicles, machinery or infrastructure. If a disruption removes supply while inventories and spare production capacity cannot compensate, prices may react sharply. The same inelasticity can magnify a demand surprise.
OPEC and non-OPEC supply
OPEC announcements influence expectations, but a stated production target is not the same as barrels actually delivered. Compliance, infrastructure limits and demand conditions determine realized output. Non-OPEC production responds to investment, geology, operating conditions and price incentives, with different projects taking different lengths of time to develop.
Economic activity and petroleum demand
Growth can increase transport and industrial fuel use, while a slowdown can reduce consumption. OECD and non-OECD demand can move at different rates, so a strong signal from one region does not automatically describe the whole world. Refinery utilization and product demand also matter because crude is processed into products rather than consumed directly.
How to read inventories without overreacting
What a build or draw can mean
An inventory build can indicate that current supply is running ahead of consumption at prevailing prices. A draw can indicate stronger consumption, lost production, export timing, refinery demand or a deliberate reduction in stocks. Neither sign identifies the cause by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSeasonality and the right comparison
Stocks normally follow seasonal patterns. Compare a release with the same calendar quarter in prior years when possible, rather than assuming that every increase is bearish or every decrease is bullish. Examine crude and products separately: a crude build alongside a product draw can reflect refinery timing rather than a simple global surplus.

Geography and data limits
A national weekly report is not a complete real-time inventory count for the world. Coverage can be less timely or incomplete in some countries. Treat one location’s number as evidence about that location and period, then use international reporting to test whether the pattern appears broader.
Storage economics and futures spreads
The relationship between futures months affects the incentive to store oil. When a later futures price is sufficiently higher than the current price, the spread can help cover storage and financing costs, making storage more attractive. Storage decisions in turn affect available prompt supply. A spread is a market signal, not proof that tanks are full or empty; check physical inventory data and costs before drawing that conclusion.
Events that move prices before the data arrive
Geopolitical risk
Conflict, sanctions or threats to a major producing or transit region can raise the perceived risk of future supply loss. Prices may rise on the possibility alone and later fall if flows continue. Distinguish a risk premium from a confirmed reduction in production or exports.

Weather
Storms can interrupt offshore production, ports, pipelines, refineries or electricity supply. Cold or hot weather can change fuel demand. The market may react to a forecast path before the weather event occurs, then reverse as the forecast changes.
Refinery outages and maintenance
A refinery outage can reduce crude demand while tightening supplies of particular products. This can push crude and product prices in different directions. Check whether the reported outage affects crude production, refining capacity, product inventories or transport routes.
Pipelines, ports and other logistics
Physical oil can exist but be unavailable to a buyer if a pipeline, port, storage site or shipping route is constrained. Location-specific prices can therefore diverge from a global benchmark. When Brent and WTI separate, investigate transport and regional inventory conditions rather than assuming one quote is wrong.

Understanding the financial side
Futures markets aggregate views about future physical conditions, storage economics, interest rates and risk. Traders can reprice contracts when new information changes those expectations. Financial flows may amplify a move, but they do not replace the physical balance: sustained prices ultimately have to be consistent with production, consumption, storage and delivery conditions.

A futures quote is the tradable price of a contract at a particular time; an outlook is an analytical projection with assumptions. Both can be wrong, and neither guarantees the price that will occur in the delivery month. EIA’s outlooks and market data should be read with their publication dates because later information can change the path.
Comparing two oil-price series or data sources
Use the following checklist before deciding that two sources disagree:
| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it changes the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark | Brent, WTI or another named grade | Quality, location and logistics create differentials. |
| Price type | Spot, intraday futures, closing settlement, estimate or forecast | Observed conditions and expectations are not the same measurement. |
| Contract month | Exact futures delivery month and whether the series rolled | Different months can price different expected supply and storage conditions. |
| Geography | Delivery point, inventory region and market covered | A local constraint may not affect the global benchmark equally. |
| Timing | Timestamp, time zone and release frequency | A daily settlement cannot be compared directly with a later intraday quote. |
| History | Length of historical coverage and revisions | Short or revised series can change a trend or seasonal comparison. |
| Data status | Observed, estimated, modeled or forecast | Uncertainty and update rules differ by status. |
A worked interpretation of a sudden price move
Suppose a nearby Brent futures contract rises sharply while a weekly inventory report shows a crude build. Do not conclude immediately that the inventory report is irrelevant or erroneous. First confirm that the futures contract and inventory period overlap. Then test several explanations:
- the build may be seasonal or concentrated in a location that cannot easily supply the market that set the benchmark;
- a refinery outage may have reduced crude intake while a geopolitical risk increased the value of future supply security;
- the futures move may reflect a change in expected future production or exports that is not yet visible in the current inventory number; or
- the displayed futures series may have rolled from one contract month to another.
Next compare WTI, relevant product inventories, the futures spread and dated commentary from EIA or IEA. Record each as evidence or interpretation. If later releases show that production, exports or demand did not change, revise the explanation instead of treating the initial narrative as fact.

Reading one weekly number as a global verdict
Fix: add seasonal comparisons, product stocks, other regions and the report’s coverage limitations.
Treating OPEC targets as guaranteed supply
Fix: compare targets with measured output and note compliance or operational constraints.
Confusing a forecast with an observation
Fix: label outlooks and futures-implied expectations separately and keep their publication dates.
Ignoring contract rolls
Fix: check the delivery month and roll methodology before calculating a long-term percentage change.
Explaining every move with a single headline
Fix: connect the event to a mechanism: which barrels, products, inventories or expectations changed, and over what time horizon?
What a useful oil-price dashboard contains
A compact dashboard should show more than a large headline number:
- Brent and WTI with the exact series labels and timestamps;
- the nearby futures contract and at least one later month, with the roll date noted;
- recent crude and product inventory changes with seasonal comparison;
- production information for OPEC and non-OPEC sources, including the difference between targets and actual output;
- demand or economic indicators for relevant OECD and non-OECD markets;
- active disruptions affecting production, refining, pipelines, ports or shipping; and
- links or references to the dated EIA release, EIA outlook and IEA Oil Market Report used for context.
Update the dashboard at the source’s stated frequency. Do not imply minute-by-minute precision for a monthly outlook or weekly inventory series.
Bottom-line method
For each meaningful move, write one sentence that identifies the exact quote, one sentence about expected supply and demand, one sentence about inventories and seasonality, and one sentence about disruptions or financial expectations. If the evidence does not establish a cause, say that the cause remains uncertain. This disciplined approach is more reliable than following a single headline or a supposedly universal oil price.
