You can follow oil prices and energy news with one bookmarked dashboard, one carefully chosen feed, and a review schedule that fits your needs. Start with the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) petroleum spot-price dashboard for daily Cushing, Oklahoma WTI and Europe Brent series. Add an EIA RSS feed or petroleum-release email only if you want headlines or release notices. Use CME Group’s exchange pages and alert tools only when you need futures-market detail, product watchlists, or exchange-oriented monitoring.
Decide what you actually want to track
“Oil prices” can mean several different things. A government spot-price series, an exchange-traded futures quote, and a news-release feed answer different questions and update on different schedules. Choosing the object first prevents a quiet information routine from turning into a stream of irrelevant alerts.
Spot prices
A spot price describes the value associated with physical oil for a specified location and period. EIA’s petroleum spot-price dashboard includes daily series for Cushing, Oklahoma WTI and Europe Brent. These series are useful for checking broad price direction and historical context without watching every intraday move. The dashboard is dynamic, so the latest date and values change as EIA publishes new observations.

Futures-market information concerns contracts traded on an exchange. A futures quote can differ from a spot series because contract delivery month, storage expectations, interest rates, risk premiums, and market positioning affect its value. CME Group’s energy-market pages cover products and benchmarks including WTI, Brent, Henry Hub natural gas, and RBOB gasoline. Depending on the product and access arrangement, the page describes real-time, delayed, end-of-day, and historical data categories.

Energy-market news and release notices
News feeds tell you when analysis, announcements, or data products are published. They do not replace a price series. EIA offers RSS feeds for items such as Today in Energy, What’s New, press releases, and gasoline and diesel updates. Its information-release page also offers email updates for petroleum data notices. Select these only when the subject matches a question you are already following.
The calmest starting setup: one EIA dashboard
For most readers, a saved dashboard and a calendar reminder are enough to begin. You do not need a trading account, streaming quote screen, or paid data package to see the daily EIA spot-price series.
- Open EIA’s petroleum spot-price dashboard. Confirm that the page shows the Cushing, Oklahoma WTI and Europe Brent series you want. Because the dashboard is updated over time, note the observation date as well as the value.
- Save the page. Add a browser bookmark, a home-screen shortcut, or a folder named “Energy check.” Saving the dashboard avoids searching for a new page each time.
- Choose a review interval. A weekly check works for a general economic-news habit; a daily check is reasonable if fuel costs, budgeting, or a work project makes recent movement relevant. This is a practical routine choice, not a published test result.
- Read the series labels before interpreting a move. Verify whether you are looking at Cushing WTI or Europe Brent, the observation date, and the unit shown by EIA. Do not treat one location’s daily spot series as a universal price for every crude grade or region.
- Record only what you need. If you are monitoring a project, write the date, series, and value in a small note or spreadsheet. Keeping a short history makes it easier to distinguish a one-day change from a sustained pattern without opening a live quote page repeatedly.
The dashboard is deliberately low-interruption: it updates when EIA publishes data, but it does not require a push notification for every change. You decide when to look.
Add news with one RSS feed, not a bundle of alerts
RSS is a subscription method rather than a particular app. EIA’s RSS guidance explains that an RSS reader can notify subscribers when a site publishes new content. The reader or application controls how those notifications appear, so a feed itself does not guarantee a pop-up, sound, or email.
Pick a feed that answers a real question
| Interest | EIA feed type to consider | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Policy, markets, and energy explanations | Today in Energy | New EIA analysis and explanatory articles |
| Changes to EIA products or data | What’s New | Notices about new or updated EIA material |
| Official announcements | Press releases | Formal EIA communications |
| Retail-fuel monitoring | Gasoline and diesel updates | Updates focused on gasoline or diesel information |
The feed names and availability can change. Check EIA’s current RSS page before subscribing, and choose one feed first. Adding every available feed usually increases volume without improving your answer to a specific question.
Configure the reader for low noise
- Open the RSS reader or news application you already use and add the selected EIA feed.
- Set the feed to appear in a folder such as “Weekly energy,” rather than in an urgent or breaking-news folder.
- Disable sound, vibration, lock-screen banners, or push delivery for that folder unless immediate publication matters to you.
- Use the reader’s unread count as a queue for your chosen review time. Read the headline and date first, then open only items relevant to your question.
- Unsubscribe when the project or interest ends. A temporary feed is easier to manage than a permanent stream of topics you no longer follow.
Because notification behavior depends on the application and its settings, troubleshoot the reader before assuming EIA’s feed is malfunctioning. A feed can be working normally while your app batches updates, suppresses background refresh, or has alerts disabled.

Use EIA email for petroleum release notices
If you care about official petroleum data announcements but do not want general energy articles, EIA’s time-critical information-release page is a better fit than a broad news feed. It offers email updates related to petroleum data notices.
Understand the Weekly Petroleum Status Report timing
EIA identifies the Weekly Petroleum Status Report as usually released on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. “Usually” matters: holiday schedules and other changes can move the release. Treat the stated time as a planning reference, not a guaranteed publication deadline.
Set up a release-only routine
- On EIA’s information-release page, select the petroleum data email option that matches your interest.
- Use an email label such as “Petroleum releases” so notices do not mix with personal or urgent mail.
- Turn off phone push notifications for the label if you only need to review releases at a set time.
- On a normal week, check the label after the expected Wednesday release window. During a holiday week, look for EIA’s revised schedule rather than assuming the usual time applies.
- Open the underlying release when you need details; do not infer inventory, production, or demand conclusions from the subject line alone.
Email is useful when the event itself matters. It is unnecessary for someone who only wants a monthly sense of oil-price direction.
When exchange-level information adds value
CME Group’s energy-market pages are appropriate when your question concerns exchange products rather than only daily government spot series. The pages list WTI and Brent crude benchmarks, Henry Hub natural gas, and RBOB gasoline, and describe several data-frequency categories:
- Real-time: information intended to reflect current market activity when available for the relevant product and access arrangement.
- Delayed: a quote delivered after a delay rather than as the market changes.
- End-of-day: a daily summary or closing data view.
- Historical: past observations used for analysis and comparison.
The page’s categories do not establish that every quote is available in every frequency, nor do they establish one universal price or access rule. Availability, delay, and any applicable terms depend on the specific product and data offering. Check the product page before relying on a frequency for a decision.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchSituations that justify looking at CME pages
- You need to distinguish a particular futures contract or benchmark from a daily spot series.
- You follow natural gas or gasoline markets as well as crude oil.
- You need historical exchange data for a documented analysis.
- You are responsible for monitoring market products during defined business hours.
- You want product-specific watchlists, reports, or alerts rather than a general energy-news feed.
Situations that do not require exchange tools
- You only want a periodic view of WTI or Brent direction.
- You are reading energy news for background, not making a time-sensitive market decision.
- You do not need a particular futures contract, intraday update, or exchange report.
- You are trying to reduce interruptions and would find a live quote screen distracting.
Exchange pages can add precision, but precision is not the same as usefulness. If a daily EIA series answers your question, adding a faster feed may only create more checking.

Optional CME account features: alerts, watchlists, and reports
CME describes account features for market alerts, product watchlists, and reports. These tools are optional layers for readers who need exchange-level monitoring. They are not prerequisites for casually following oil prices, and the available terms or cost of each data offering are not established by the information here.
Use a watchlist to narrow the scope
If you create a CME watchlist, include only the products tied to your work: for example, one crude benchmark, a natural-gas contract, or RBOB gasoline. A short list keeps the page useful and makes it easier to notice a relevant change without scanning every energy product.
Use alerts only for a decision rule
An alert should correspond to an action or review question, such as checking a procurement plan when a monitored contract reaches a level your organization has defined. Avoid alerts whose only purpose is to report that the market moved. Before enabling one, decide which product, condition, delivery method, and quiet hours apply. Confirm the alert’s actual frequency and trigger behavior in the account interface.
Use reports for scheduled review
Reports can support a weekly or monthly review when you need a record of exchange information. Download or read them at the same time as your EIA dashboard check, then keep the two data types labeled separately. Do not merge a futures observation into a spot-price history without recording the contract and date.
Keep spot, futures, and news in separate notes
A simple labeling system prevents the most common interpretation error: treating unlike data as if it were one series.
| Label | Source type | Record with each observation |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | EIA petroleum dashboard | Series name (Cushing WTI or Europe Brent), date, value, and displayed unit |
| Exchange | CME energy-market page or account tool | Benchmark or contract, data frequency, date/time, and any stated delay |
| News | EIA RSS item or release email | Feed name, publication date, headline, and the underlying document |
This separation matters when a headline refers to futures while your spreadsheet contains a spot series. The two can move differently without either source being wrong.

Choose a review cadence that stays quiet
There is no single correct interval. Match the cadence to the consequence of missing an update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOccasional personal or educational interest
Bookmark the EIA dashboard and review it weekly or monthly. Subscribe to no feed unless a specific EIA topic becomes useful. This setup gives context without creating a daily task.
Household fuel or budgeting decisions
Check the relevant EIA spot series weekly, then read one gasoline or diesel update when retail-fuel context matters. Keep notifications off and use a calendar reminder instead.
Work requiring current energy context
Use a daily EIA dashboard check and one focused RSS feed. Add the petroleum-release email if the Weekly Petroleum Status Report or related notices affect your work. Review at a defined time rather than reacting to every unread item.
Time-sensitive market or risk monitoring
Evaluate whether CME’s product-specific data frequency, watchlists, alerts, or reports are necessary. Define the decisions first, then enable only the products and conditions that support them. A higher-detail setup should be justified by a real operational requirement.

The RSS reader is too noisy
Remove feeds that do not answer your question, move the remaining feed out of the urgent folder, and disable push notifications for it. If the reader supports filters or folders, use them to separate petroleum releases from general energy articles.
You receive no RSS notifications
Check that the feed is still subscribed, background refresh is enabled for the reader, and notifications are allowed for that app. Remember that EIA describes RSS as a way for a reader to notify subscribers; delivery timing and notification style are controlled by the application.
The petroleum email arrives at a different time
Look for a holiday or revised schedule on EIA’s information-release page. The Weekly Petroleum Status Report is usually released Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, but the schedule can vary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You cannot tell whether a CME quote is live
Read the product page’s data-frequency label and any stated delay. Do not assume that the presence of an energy-market page means every instrument is real-time or that one access arrangement applies to all users.
Your notes mix incompatible prices
Add the source type, series or contract, date, and frequency to every entry. Separate EIA spot observations from CME futures information and from news headlines before drawing a trend.
A 10-minute low-interruption routine
- Open the saved EIA petroleum spot-price dashboard.
- Check the latest dates for Cushing WTI and Europe Brent, recording only the series relevant to you.
- Open your single EIA RSS folder or petroleum-release label.
- Read only items connected to your stated question; archive the rest without opening every headline.
- If you use CME tools, review the small watchlist or scheduled report rather than browsing unrelated products.
- Close the pages and leave notifications disabled until the next planned review.
This routine keeps the information available while making attention the scarce resource. Move to a faster or more detailed setup only when a specific decision cannot be served by the daily dashboard and scheduled updates.
