There is no single “oil price.” To track crude accurately, first choose the benchmark that matches the market you mean—usually WTI at Cushing for U.S. crude, Brent for much of the Atlantic and international market, or Dubai/Oman for Middle Eastern crude sold into Asia. Then identify whether the number is a spot price, a futures quote, or a settlement index, and check its timestamp, contract month, units and currency.
What “oil price” means
News reports often say that oil rose or fell without naming the actual instrument. The figure may be a daily spot assessment, the price of a futures contract expiring in a particular month, or a settlement index calculated under a specific methodology. Those numbers can differ at the same moment without any of them being wrong.
A benchmark is a reference price for a defined crude grade, location and trading market. Other crudes are commonly quoted as a benchmark plus or minus a differential. The differential can reflect density (API gravity), sulfur content, transport costs, regional or global supply and demand, and refinery utilization, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

How do I track oil prices for free?
Use EIA’s public spot-price table
The EIA “Spot Prices for Crude Oil and Petroleum Products” table is a transparent baseline for readers who need historical spot prices rather than a trading terminal. It lists WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma and Brent for Europe, in dollars per barrel, and provides links to historical series.
The table is not a live-tick feed. EIA explains that its weekly, monthly and annual values are unweighted averages of daily closing spot prices. A weekly value therefore summarizes the reporting period; it is not necessarily the latest quote available during that week. When citing one, include the period and the table’s release date.
The page viewed for this guide showed reporting dates through October 2, 2026, a release date of October 7, 2026, and a next scheduled release of October 15, 2026. Those dates are page-specific and can change, so verify the current table before publication or analysis. Do not describe a dated EIA weekly, monthly or annual figure as a real-time price.
Read the table without confusing averages and closes
- Choose the row for WTI at Cushing or Brent for Europe.
- Check whether the column is daily, weekly, monthly or annual.
- Read the reporting date or date range attached to the value.
- Record that the unit is dollars per barrel.
- For repeat analysis, use the linked historical series and preserve the download date in your notes.
EIA is especially useful for charting, comparing years and building a reproducible baseline. It does not replace an exchange quote when you need an intraday futures price.
Where can I find futures and exchange-market quotes?
CME energy futures data
CME’s energy pages identify WTI and Brent futures products and describe several data frequencies: real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical. The availability, fees and account requirements depend on the product and access method. Check the actual quote screen rather than assuming that a page labeled “market data” is free or real time.
A futures quote must include its expiry month. “WTI” alone is incomplete because the front month changes as contracts approach expiration. A later contract can trade above or below the nearby contract as the market prices storage, financing, expected production and demand.
ICE oil-market data
Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) describes an oil benchmark complex that includes Brent-related products and states on its oil page that displayed market data is delayed by at least 15 minutes. Treat that as a delay notice, not as a guarantee that every ICE service has identical terms. Confirm the timestamp, instrument and access conditions on the specific screen you use.

For a professional workflow, save the exchange name, symbol, contract month, quote currency, timestamp and whether the value is a bid, ask, last trade or settlement. A historical download should also retain the exchange’s definition of the field; “close” and “settlement” are not automatically interchangeable.
What is the difference between Brent and WTI?
| Benchmark | Crude and price point | Markets commonly associated with it | When it is the better reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| WTI | Light, sweet crude priced at the Cushing, Oklahoma trading hub | U.S. crude; also used as a reference for some imports from Canada, Mexico and South America | Analysing U.S. production, inland logistics, Cushing inventories or U.S.-linked contracts |
| Brent | Light, sweet North Sea benchmark | Crude produced and traded in Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa, plus Australia and some Asian markets | Analysing seaborne international crude or markets that price against Brent |
| Dubai/Oman | Medium, sour crude benchmark built from Dubai and Oman references | Middle Eastern crude exported to Asian markets | Analysing Persian Gulf supply and Asian crude pricing |
These are not interchangeable measurements of one identical barrel. They represent different grades, delivery locations and market structures. EIA’s benchmark explainer describes WTI as a U.S.-produced light, sweet crude and Brent as a North Sea light, sweet crude. It describes Dubai and Oman as medium, sour crudes whose prices are often averaged into a benchmark for Middle Eastern exports to Asia.
ICE characterizes Brent as a global price barometer for approximately 80% of global crude. That is ICE’s characterization, not a universally verified statistic for every definition of “global crude.” Use it as context for Brent’s market reach, not as a precise current market-share measurement.
Why are Brent and WTI prices different?
Different locations and transport economics
WTI is priced at Cushing, an inland Oklahoma hub. Brent reflects a seaborne North Sea market. Moving a barrel between regions costs money and takes time, so local inventories, pipeline capacity, shipping rates and disruptions can widen or narrow the spread.
Different crude qualities
Both WTI and Brent are generally classified as light and sweet, but they are not chemically identical streams. Refiners value each grade according to density, sulfur and other properties. Dubai/Oman is typically medium and sour, so its differential reflects a different refining challenge and product yield.
Different supply, demand and refinery conditions
A refinery outage, a pipeline bottleneck, a change in export availability or a regional demand surge can affect one benchmark more than another. The benchmark spread is therefore an economic signal, not a simple error to be corrected.
Different instruments and dates
Comparing a Brent front-month future with a WTI spot assessment mixes both benchmark and quote type. Comparing different futures expiries adds a second timing difference. Align the benchmark, instrument, contract month and timestamp before interpreting the spread.

What is the ICE Brent Index?
The ICE Brent Index is a settlement measure, not a continuously changing front-month futures quote. ICE says the index represents an average of prevailing North Sea cash or forward-market trading for the relevant delivery month. Its calculation uses published full-cargo trades and assessments; the current methodology page states that the full-cargo size considered is 700,000 barrels.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallICE publishes the index on the day after expiry of the front-month ICE Brent futures contract and uses it as the final cash-settlement price. Do not generalize the Brent Index methodology to every quote labeled “Brent.”
How to compare two oil-price quotes correctly
- Name the benchmark and price point. Write “WTI at Cushing,” “Brent for Europe,” “Dubai/Oman” or the exact alternative shown by the provider. Geography changes the meaning of the number.
- Identify the instrument. Mark the quote as spot, futures, or settlement index. A spot assessment and a futures trade answer different questions.
- Record the contract month. For futures, include the expiry month and year. Replace “front month” with the actual contract when saving data because the front month rolls over.
- Capture the timestamp and delay. Label the value real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical. CME lists all of these data categories; ICE’s oil page states a delay of at least 15 minutes for its displayed market data.
- Confirm units and currency. The EIA table cited here uses U.S. dollars per barrel. Other services may use another currency, a different volume unit or a converted value.
- Explain the differential. If the values differ, check grade quality, transport, regional supply and demand, and refinery utilization before concluding that one source is wrong.
| Field to save | Example of a complete description | Why it prevents mistakes |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark/location | WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma | Separates a U.S. hub price from Brent or another regional marker |
| Instrument | Daily closing spot price | Prevents comparison with a futures last trade as if they were identical |
| Contract | ICE Brent front-month future, expiry stated explicitly | Shows which delivery month is being priced |
| Time status | Delayed at least 15 minutes, or end-of-day | Stops a delayed quote being presented as live |
| Unit/currency | U.S. dollars per barrel | Prevents silent currency or volume conversions |
| Observation date | Reporting date or settlement date | Distinguishes a historical value from the latest available quote |
How to build a historical crude-price series
For spot-price analysis
Start with the EIA historical links attached to its spot-price table. Select the benchmark, choose the required frequency and retain the original date field. Weekly, monthly and annual observations are averages of daily closing spot prices, so they are appropriate for period comparisons but not for reconstructing an intraday path.
Document the extraction date, table title, benchmark row, unit and frequency. If a chart combines WTI and Brent, use the same frequency and date convention for both series. A monthly WTI average compared with a daily Brent close can create a visual difference that comes from methodology rather than the market.
For futures analysis
Use the historical-data function offered by the exchange or licensed provider and specify whether you need daily settlement, official close, or trade-level data. Preserve the contract symbol and expiry. If you create a continuous front-month series, document the roll rule; otherwise, a price jump at rollover can be mistaken for a market move.

Use the index’s published methodology and observation date. An index designed for final cash settlement should not be merged blindly with a tradable futures last price. Keep the index in its own field and explain the settlement event that produced it.
How to answer “What is the current price of Brent crude?”
First clarify what “current” means. A reader may want a live Brent futures quote, the latest delayed exchange price, the latest daily settlement, or the most recently released EIA spot value. These can all have different timestamps.

For a public spot reference, open the EIA table and read the Brent-for-Europe row with its reporting date. For a futures-market answer, use an exchange quote and state the contract month, timestamp and delay. For a settlement answer, identify the relevant settlement field and date. Never give an undated Brent number as though it were universally current.
A publication-ready caption might read: “Brent for Europe, EIA daily closing spot price, U.S. dollars per barrel, reporting date [date shown on the table].” A futures caption should add the exchange, contract expiry and whether the quote is real-time, delayed or end-of-day.
Historical context for Dubai/Oman and Brent volumes
EIA reported that Brent loadings averaged 0.86 million barrels per day in 2013, about 1% of world crude production of 76 million barrels per day. It also reported 2013 production of approximately 34,000 barrels per day for Dubai and 0.94 million barrels per day for Oman. These figures explain why Oman has an important role in a Dubai/Oman reference, but they are historical data from 2013, not current production estimates.
Use those figures only as background when explaining benchmark formation. They should not be used to estimate today’s supply, market share or price without newer data.

Mistake: treating “oil” as one quote
Fix: Put the benchmark and location in the column name or chart title. “Oil price” is not specific enough for a reproducible dataset.

Mistake: omitting the futures expiry
Fix: Save the contract month and year. Replace a generic “front month” label with the actual contract when publishing or archiving a quote.
Mistake: comparing different time states
Fix: Align timestamps and mark whether each value is real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical. ICE’s stated minimum delay of 15 minutes means an ICE display should not be described as live unless the specific service says otherwise.
Mistake: assuming Brent Index equals Brent futures
Fix: Treat the ICE Brent Index as a methodology-defined settlement measure tied to the relevant delivery month and published after front-month expiry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMistake: ignoring currency or units
Fix: Show dollars per barrel, or state the conversion rate and volume unit used by another source.
Mistake: explaining every spread as a quality difference
Fix: Check transport bottlenecks, inventories, regional demand, refinery outages and contract timing as well as crude chemistry.
A practical tracking workflow
- Define the question. Decide whether you need U.S. crude, international seaborne crude, Asian-import pricing, a spot history or a tradable futures quote.
- Select the benchmark. Use WTI at Cushing for a U.S.-focused question, Brent for many international and Atlantic-market questions, or Dubai/Oman for Middle Eastern crude into Asia.
- Select the quote type. Choose EIA spot data for a public historical baseline, exchange futures data for market quotes, or a published settlement index for settlement analysis.
- Capture metadata with every value. Store benchmark, location, instrument, contract month, timestamp, delay, units, currency and source page title.
- Align observations before calculating spreads. Match dates, frequencies and quote types. Do not subtract a monthly average from a real-time futures quote.
- Explain unusual differences. Investigate grade, transport, regional supply and demand, refinery utilization and contract roll timing.
- Recheck volatile pages before publication. EIA release dates and exchange display terms change, and a page that was current on one date may not be current later.
Bottom line for tracking crude prices
Use EIA’s WTI-at-Cushing and Brent-for-Europe table when you need a free, documented spot-price baseline and historical series. Use CME or ICE data when you need futures-market observations, but state the expiry and delay. Use the ICE Brent Index only in the context of its delivery-month methodology and final cash-settlement role. The reliable comparison is never just two numbers: it is two fully identified observations with the benchmark, location, instrument, date, timing, units and currency made explicit.
