Reliable tracking starts by treating every sealed product as its own market and separating completed transactions from unsold asking prices. Identify the exact set and pack format, capture sold-price data and live offers independently, normalize the full delivered cost, then judge the result by recency and sales activity.
Define exactly what you are tracking
A Magic: The Gathering single booster pack is not interchangeable with a booster box, bundle, draft product, collector product, or an individual card. Set name matters just as much: a price for one expansion does not establish the value of a pack from another expansion. Record the product identity before recording any number.
Use a precise product label
A useful search pattern is Magic: The Gathering [set name] booster pack. On the resulting marketplace page, confirm all of the following:
- The complete set name, including any edition or special release wording.
- That the item is one sealed booster pack rather than a box, case, bundle, or loose assortment.
- Whether the listing describes a particular language, region, or packaging variation.
- The marketplace and currency shown for every figure.
TCGplayer maintains individual booster-pack product pages, including pages with product-level Market Price History. Its Core Set 2021 booster-pack page is an example of this category, not a current price quotation or a universal benchmark.

Keep pack formats in separate series
Create a separate tracking series for each combination of set and sealed format. A single draft booster, a set booster, and a collector booster can have different supply, demand, and intended uses. Combining them produces an average that describes none of them. The same rule applies to a single pack versus a sealed box: a box price may be divided by the number of packs for a rough calculation, but it is not a completed single-pack sale and should not be entered as one.
Separate sold prices from asking prices
The most important distinction in a price log is whether money actually changed hands. TCGplayer defines Market Price as a figure compiled from recent sales completed on TCGplayer.com. Its Listed Median describes current listings instead. An active listing shows what a seller wants, not what a buyer has paid.
What each number answers

A large gap between a sold metric and live asks is information, not an error. It can indicate that sellers have not adjusted, buyers are resisting the asks, or the product has too few transactions for either figure to be stable.
A repeatable tracking workflow
- Open the exact product page. Start with the set-specific single-pack page and verify the sealed format. Save the page name in your log so a later visit does not silently switch to a box or a different product.
- Capture the sold-market fields. Record Market Price, Most Recent Sale, the displayed observation period, and any filters applied. Do not copy a number without its marketplace and currency.
- Capture active offers separately. Record Listed Median or selected listing prices in a different column from completed-sale figures. Note whether each offer is for one pack and whether the listing has unusual quantity or condition wording.
- Normalize the delivered cost. For every offer you compare, add the item price and shipping. TCGplayer explains that listing order uses item price plus shipping. Record separately whether tax or another checkout charge is included, excluded, or unknown.
- Log recency and activity. Write down the date you observed the page, the date or age of the latest sale if displayed, and the number or density of sales shown. A single old transaction should not be treated like a repeated current pattern.
- Cross-check a second venue. Use eBay’s Price Guide or completed-sale results when a genuinely comparable sealed-pack match is available. Keep that observation in a separate marketplace column rather than blending it into the TCGplayer series.
- Archive each observation. Keep the original figures and the observation date instead of overwriting them. This lets you distinguish a real movement from a changed filter, a removed listing, or a revised marketplace display.
Choose a consistent review routine
The value of a tracker comes from comparable snapshots, not from checking random pages at random times. Use the same product page, currency, filters, and definition of a pack each time. Record the observation date even when the marketplace displays a sale date, because the displayed page can change between visits.
For a recurring log, add a new row rather than replacing the old one. A row can contain the current Market Price, Most Recent Sale, Listed Median, shipping-inclusive offer examples, and a note about sales activity. If a platform changes its page layout or a filter, note that change so a break in the series is not mistaken for a price move.
Reading TCGplayer data correctly
Market Price
TCGplayer’s official definition is: “Market Price: This price point is compiled from recent sales completed on TCGplayer.com.” It is therefore a transaction-based reference for that marketplace, not a claim about every Magic sale or the entire secondary market. Keep the product page, filters, currency, and observation date with the value.
Most Recent Sale
Most Recent Sale identifies the latest transaction for the product and selected filters. It is useful for answering whether the market has traded recently, but it is not automatically a trend. A latest sale can be an outlier, a stale event, or the only observation in a long period.
Listed Median
Listed Median summarizes current listing prices. Because listings can remain unsold, it is best used as an availability and seller-expectation signal. When you compare it with Market Price, label the two as ask and sold rather than calling both market value.

Market Price Volatility
TCGplayer describes a 30-day Market Price Volatility measure. Use the displayed time window and the same product filters each time you record it. The measure can be indeterminate when there are not enough sales in the 30-day period. Treat that state as a data-sufficiency warning, not as zero volatility or proof that the price is stable.
Compare two observations without mixing unlike data
When a price appears to rise or fall, compare the observations on five axes before drawing a conclusion:
- Identity: Is the set, sealed format, language, variant, and quantity the same?
- Transaction status: Are both figures completed sales, or are you comparing a sale with a live ask?
- Total cost: Do both offer comparisons include shipping, with tax treatment stated?
- Time scale: Do the observations use the same displayed period, or is one a 30-day measure and the other a much longer history?
- Data sufficiency: How many qualifying sales support each figure, and how long ago was the latest one?
If any axis differs, preserve both numbers but describe the difference explicitly. A lower sold price alongside higher asks may reflect seller expectations rather than a completed-market increase. Likewise, an apparent jump may simply come from switching from a single pack to a lot or from changing the selected product filter.

Using eBay as a cross-check
eBay says its Price Guide uses completed sales, includes accepted Best Offer prices, updates every 24 hours, and can show up to two years of sales history. Those features make it useful for checking whether a recent transaction pattern exists outside TCGplayer.
Matching is the critical limitation. The Price Guide is oriented toward identifying trading-card products, so verify that a result is actually a sealed booster pack of the same set and format. Exclude individual cards, opened products, boxes, lots, and mixed listings unless your tracking series is explicitly for that format. Keep eBay figures labeled as eBay sales; do not average them with TCGplayer figures without noting the different venues and matching rules.
Compare offers on a delivered-cost basis
Two listings with identical item prices can have different real costs once shipping is added. TCGplayer states that marketplace listing order uses item price plus shipping. Apply that convention when deciding which offer is cheaper or when comparing a live ask with a recent sale.

Do not silently divide a multi-pack listing by quantity and call the result a sale of one pack. You may record a per-pack calculation in a separate derived column, but retain the original lot size and total cost.

What to do when sales data is thin
No recent sale is not the same as a zero-dollar market. If TCGplayer shows an indeterminate volatility result, very few transactions, or a long gap since the latest sale, write “insufficient recent sales” in the activity note and avoid presenting a precise trend. A Listed Median can still describe what is currently offered, but it cannot fill the missing sold data.

Few active listings create a similar problem. One unusually high or low listing can dominate the visible range, while a removed listing can make the next snapshot look artificially different. Keep the observation, identify the limitation, and wait for additional comparable sales before treating the movement as durable.
Judge how strong a price signal is
A number becomes more useful when you know how recent it is, how often the product traded, and whether several observations point in the same direction. Use a simple confidence note alongside every observation.
Strong repeated pattern
Several comparable completed sales appear within the displayed window, the latest sale is recent, and the sold values cluster reasonably closely. A matching second-venue result can add context, provided the product identity is confirmed.

Only one or very few sales appear, the latest transaction is old, or active listings are scarce. In this situation, describe the figure as a limited observation rather than a dependable trend. TCGplayer’s indeterminate volatility result is an explicit example of insufficient activity.
Conflicting signals
Market Price, Most Recent Sale, Listed Median, and cross-market completed sales point in different directions. Check filters, format, quantity, shipping treatment, and sale dates before interpreting the difference. If the records still disagree, report the range and the separate sources instead of manufacturing one blended price.
Build a tracking spreadsheet that preserves context
A useful log stores the facts needed to reproduce a comparison later. One row should represent one observation of one product on one marketplace.

Store sold and asking metrics in different fields rather than one generic price column. If you calculate delivered cost, label it as a calculation and retain the underlying item and shipping values.
Interpret changes without overclaiming
Check the product before calling it a price move
A sudden change can result from switching from a single pack to a box, selecting a different set, changing language, or viewing a different filter. Reconfirm identity before comparing two dates.

Check the observation window
A 30-day volatility measure and a two-year eBay history answer different time-scale questions. Align the windows when possible, and state the window when they cannot be aligned.
Check whether the latest sale is representative
Compare the latest transaction with the other completed sales in the same series. If it is the only sale or sits far outside the surrounding values, flag it as an outlier rather than extending it into a market-wide claim.
Do not turn asks into forecasts
Rising Listed Median values may show that sellers are asking more, but they do not establish that buyers are accepting those prices. A forecast requires repeated completed-sale evidence, not a row of unsold offers.
Common tracking mistakes and their fixes
- Mixing products: Separate set, format, language, and quantity before entering a value.
- Calling an ask a sale: Put live listings in ask fields and completed transactions in sold fields.
- Ignoring shipping: Compare item price plus shipping and identify any tax or checkout exclusion.
- Using one venue as the whole market: Describe TCGplayer figures as TCGplayer activity and eBay figures as eBay activity.
- Overreading sparse data: Mark low sales volume, an old latest transaction, or indeterminate volatility as a confidence limitation.
- Combining pack lots with singles: Preserve the listing quantity and keep any per-pack arithmetic visibly derived.
- Overwriting history: Append new observations with dates so revisions and market movement remain distinguishable.
What a defensible price report should say
A concise report should identify the set and sealed format first, then name the marketplace and currency. State whether each figure comes from completed sales or current listings, include shipping treatment for offers, and give the observation window. Add a qualification when activity is sparse or the latest sale is old. If you cite a second venue, explain that its matching scope and sales history are separate from the first marketplace.
For example, a sound entry would describe a single sealed pack from one named set, give TCGplayer Market Price and Most Recent Sale with the selected filters, list the current Listed Median separately, and note whether eBay showed a comparable completed sale. It would not substitute a box price, an individual-card sale, or an unsold ask.
Limits of the method
Marketplace metrics are not a census of every Magic transaction. TCGplayer’s definitions describe activity on TCGplayer.com, while eBay’s guide describes eBay sales and its own matching system. Listings and transaction values can change, and the cited product pages are examples rather than guaranteed current quotes. Check the live, set-specific page whenever you publish or make a purchase decision.
No defensible market-wide annual statistic is established by these metrics alone. The method is strongest when used as a transparent record of matched products, completed transactions, delivered offer costs, and data sufficiency.

Is TCGplayer Listed Median the price a pack actually sold for?
No. Listed Median summarizes current asking prices. TCGplayer Market Price is the metric based on recent completed TCGplayer sales, so keep asks and sold figures in separate fields.

Can I use a booster-box price as a single-pack sale?
No. A box divided by its pack count can be recorded as a rough per-pack calculation, but it is not a completed sale of one loose pack. Keep box and single-pack series separate.
Should shipping be included when comparing listings?
Yes. Add the item price and shipping to create a delivered subtotal, then note whether tax or another checkout charge is included, excluded, or unknown.
What does an indeterminate 30-day volatility result mean?
TCGplayer indicates that there are not enough sales in the 30-day period to calculate the measure reliably. Treat it as a data-sufficiency warning, not as zero volatility or proof of a stable price.

How current is eBay Price Guide data?
eBay says the guide updates every 24 hours, includes accepted Best Offer prices, and can show up to two years of sales history. Verify that each result is actually a sealed pack of the same set and format.
Can I average TCGplayer and eBay prices?
Keep the venues separate unless you clearly explain the different matching rules, currencies, time windows, and transaction costs. A cross-check can add context, but it is not automatically a single combined market price.
What should I report when there are no recent sales?
State that recent completed-sale evidence is insufficient, record the latest sale if one exists, and present current listings only as asking-price information. Do not convert a lack of sales into a zero value or a confident trend.
