To track investments in Quicken, connect an eligible account and update its transactions and holdings, or enter activity manually. Then review the transaction register and update security prices separately when needed. The steps below are for Quicken Classic; Windows menu paths are labeled, and Mac uses different views. Quicken Simplifi follows a different model.

Choose connected or manual tracking

Quicken Classic can download investment data from participating financial institutions, or you can maintain records by entering transactions yourself. Whether an account can connect—and which connection method is available—depends on the institution and account type. Some institutions use Web Connect, which involves downloading a file from the institution and importing it into Quicken. See Quicken’s guide to updating investment transactions, balances, and holdings.

Choose a connection if your institution supports the account and you want downloads of activity and balances. Manual entry is an alternative when the needed connection is unavailable or you prefer to maintain the records yourself. Quicken Mac documents both automatic updates from participating institutions and manual transaction entry in its investment overview.

Update a connected investment account in Quicken Classic for Windows

  1. Enable online services: Set up online services for the investment account before attempting to download data. Available connection methods vary by institution and account type.
  2. Run an update: To update one account, open it, select Account Actions, then choose Update Now. To update multiple online-enabled accounts, select Tools > One Step Update. The update settings let you choose which accounts and services to include.
  3. Check the result: Review the One Step Update Summary, then inspect the investment account’s transaction list for downloaded activity.

Quicken’s Windows update instructions cover account updates and connection methods. An update retrieves data; it does not remove the need to check that the downloaded activity matches your records.

Review investment transactions before accepting downloads

In Quicken Classic, an investment transaction list works like a register: it records activity such as buys, sells, dividends, reinvestments, and stock splits. Quicken describes the list as “essentially a register” for investment transactions in its transaction-list help.

If you already entered transactions manually and that register is accurate, review downloaded items individually rather than accepting everything at once. Accepting all can create duplicate entries. A downloaded sale may also prompt you to identify the tax lots sold. If the holdings shown in Quicken do not match the brokerage’s records, an adjustment may be needed. Quicken explains the review process in Accept and Review Downloaded Investment Transactions.

Update security prices separately in Windows

Transaction and balance downloads are not the only updates that affect what you see in a portfolio. Security quotes have a separate update path. In Quicken Classic for Windows, go to Investing > Go to Investing, open the Portfolio tab, and click Update. You can also include quotes in One Step Update. Updating prices from the Portfolio view requires an internet connection.

Check that each security has the correct ticker symbol. Quicken says its price update does not cover money-market securities or securities whose ticker ends in XX. These instructions and limitations are in Quicken’s security-price guide, updated June 9, 2026.

Read the register and portfolio views together

The transaction list is the activity history; the portfolio view is the holdings overview. In Windows, an account’s transaction list can show securities value, cash balance, and total market value together. The cash balance is calculated for today, so it does not include future-dated transactions. See Quicken’s explanation of investment-account balances.

On Mac, Quicken’s documented investment views include Transactions for recorded activity and Portfolio for holdings. Its Mac investing overview describes investment accounts including brokerage, IRA, 401(k), and 529 accounts, and notes that data can be updated automatically from participating institutions or entered manually. Menu paths can differ by platform, so use the Windows sequence above only in Quicken Classic for Windows.

Do not apply Quicken Classic steps to Simplifi

Quicken Simplifi handles investment records differently from Quicken Classic. In Simplifi, holdings and cash drive the account’s holdings and portfolio value; investment transaction records do not themselves change holdings, account balance, or portfolio value. Follow the separate Simplifi investment guidance rather than assuming that entering or downloading a transaction will update the portfolio the same way it does in Classic.
