ToolJet MCP connects an MCP-compatible AI coding agent to a ToolJet workspace so it can create or modify a structured internal app. ToolJet’s merchandising example brings channel prices, margin, inventory risk, repricing approvals and purchase-request drafts into one command centre. The workflow is a vendor-published example, not an independently tested deployment; treat its prompt as a starting specification and validate calculations, permissions and data before relying on it.
What the command centre is designed to do
ToolJet’s example is aimed at a consumer-electronics seller operating its own store, Amazon and two regional marketplaces. Rather than treating price and stock as separate reports, it organizes the work around a shared catalogue, actionable alerts and a per-product history.
Catalogue: compare channels and reprice with context
The catalogue places one product on each row and shows channel prices, weekly units sold, margin after fees, stock on hand, reserved stock, available stock, stock cover against supplier lead time and the most recent price change. A Reprice action opens a modal with the stored price band, floor price, proposed new margin and estimated weekly impact. The prompt makes the reason for a price change required.
Alerts: prioritize stock and margin risks
The Alerts view covers stock-out risks ranked by revenue exposed over supplier lead time, listings below their margin threshold and pending price approvals. The example’s purchase-request workflow estimates demand from sell-through and lead time, subtracts available stock, rounds to case packs and respects the supplier’s minimum order quantity. It drafts a supplier email for a person to review and send; it is not described as automatically placing an order.

Product detail: retain the decision trail
A product view brings together price history by channel, stock history and projection, current channel prices, purchase requests and the price-change trail. This helps a merchandiser or approver inspect how a proposed change relates to previous pricing and stock decisions.
How do I build an inventory and pricing command centre?
Start by defining the data and decision rules before asking an agent to generate screens. ToolJet’s consolidated example prompt specifies ToolJet DB tables for channels, categories, suppliers, products, channel prices, weekly sales, weekly stock history, audit events, purchase requests and roles. It seeds data in USD and describes role concepts: merchandisers may change in-band prices, category heads approve out-of-band changes, and finance may view but not change records. These are requirements in the example prompt, not verified guarantees that a generated app will enforce them correctly.

1. Prepare the workspace and MCP client
ToolJet’s MCP overview lists a personal access token, Node.js 20 or newer available to the AI client, and an MCP-compatible client as prerequisites. MCP can target ToolJet Cloud or a self-hosted instance. The setup steps and client support can change, so follow the current ToolJet MCP setup documentation for the client you use. The token is scoped to a workspace and acts with its owner’s permissions, so use an account whose access is appropriate for the build.

2. Specify the workflow, not just the screens
Describe the fields, calculations, roles and state transitions that users need. For example, specify how available stock is calculated from on-hand and reserved quantities; which fee inputs determine post-fee margin; how a price band and floor are stored; what happens when a proposed price falls outside the band; and which supplier rules govern case-pack rounding and minimum order quantity. Include the required reason and audit trail for price changes, and state which groups can write or approve.

ToolJet’s example asks for server-side band enforcement and write queries restricted to the appropriate groups. Include those as explicit acceptance criteria, then verify them in the generated app. A visual control that hides a button is not, by itself, evidence that a write is protected.
3. Generate and inspect the app in development
ToolJet’s app-generation documentation says the agent inspects configured data sources, creates the app and queries, binds components and returns links for editing and testing. The documented default is the development environment, which may use different data sources from staging or production. Confirm the active environment and the target data source before testing or releasing changes. ToolJet says its MCP flow can create apps with pages, data-source queries and components, modify existing apps, inspect connected data, create ToolJet DB tables and queries, and manage page or query permissions (ToolJet MCP overview; App Generation documentation).
Rank #4
4. Test business rules with representative cases
Use sample products that exercise boundary cases, not only ordinary records. Check an in-band price change, an out-of-band proposal, a price below the floor, a product with reserved stock, and a supplier with a case pack and minimum order quantity. Verify the margin and weekly-impact calculations against values approved by merchandising and finance, and confirm that each purchase-request quantity follows the intended lead-time and availability assumptions.
Test each role directly, including attempted writes through the app’s actual queries. Confirm that a merchandiser cannot approve an out-of-band change, that an unauthorized user cannot change prices through an alternate route, and that finance’s view-only requirement applies to writes rather than merely the visible interface. Review generated queries and permissions before connecting production data.

Can I use ToolJet MCP to build an inventory app?
Yes: ToolJet documents MCP as a way for an MCP-compatible AI coding agent to work with a ToolJet instance and create or modify apps. Its description includes connected-data inspection, app pages and components, queries, ToolJet DB tables, and page or query permissions. ToolJet also says that apps created through MCP are native and visually editable, and describes a dry-run, apply and check sequence on its ToolJet MCP product page. Those are ToolJet’s product claims; they do not establish that a particular generated app is production-ready or that its security and calculations are correct.
ToolJet says its platform audit log records activity such as actor, action, timestamp, location and relevant application or permission events (ToolJet MCP overview). Treat that platform log as one part of operational traceability: the app’s own price-change and purchase-request records still need to capture the business context your team requires.
How can I track stock-outs and channel margins in one place?
Use the channel catalogue as the shared operating view, but define its metrics precisely. The example places margin after fees and channel-specific prices alongside available stock and supplier lead time, while ranking stock-out alerts by revenue exposed over that lead time. That ranking is not automatically the best fit for every retailer: revenue exposure, days of cover, margin, lead-time variability and service-level targets can point to different priorities.
Recommended Free Tools
- Agree on which fees and costs are included in each channel’s margin calculation.
- Distinguish stock on hand, reserved stock and available stock so users do not mistake committed units for sellable inventory.
- Confirm whether sales rates and supplier lead times are measured over periods that make sense for the products involved.
- Have the business owner validate stock projections, alert ranking and reorder quantities against actual data before using them for purchasing decisions.
- Make the price floor, permitted band, approval path and required change reason explicit and reviewable.
What to verify before release
The build article is a concrete vendor example, not a hands-on deployment review or independent security assessment. Before release, review the generated app against your data, roles and operating rules rather than assuming that a successful generation step proves correctness.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the app points to the intended environment and that development, staging and production sources are not confused.
- Inspect query permissions and test writes with each role, including unauthorized attempts.
- Validate the price-band and floor checks on the server side, plus the approval queue and audit events.
- Reconcile channel prices, fees, stock, lead times, case packs and minimum order quantities with authoritative business data.
- Have merchandising, operations and finance approve the metric definitions and exception handling before users act on alerts.
