The most reliable way to track India’s private capital expenditure (capex) is to combine three views rather than search for one definitive number: MoSPI’s national-accounts measure of gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), MoSPI’s large-enterprise CAPEX survey, and a consistent panel of company annual reports and MCA/Registrar of Companies filings. Use GFCF to benchmark the private non-financial-corporate economy, the survey to see reported and planned spending by large enterprises, and filings to verify what individual companies actually added to their asset base and paid for in cash.
Keep actual, provisional and intended spending in separate columns; distinguish gross additions from net fixed assets; preserve fiscal-year and price-basis information; and never add intentions to realized investment. The workflow below gives you a repeatable panel, reconciliation checks and the caveats needed to compare corporate data with India’s GDP statistics.
What “private capex” means in India’s data
“Private capex” is not a single accounting line. At the macro level, the closest benchmark is gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) by institutional sector in MoSPI’s national accounts. For this exercise, the most relevant series is private non-financial-corporation GFCF. It is a macroeconomic estimate, not a sum of the capex lines in every listed company’s annual report.
Recommended Free Tools
At the enterprise level, capex normally means spending that creates or improves long-lived assets: property, plant and equipment (PPE), capital work in progress (CWIP), eligible intangible assets, right-of-use assets from leases, and assets acquired through business combinations. Companies may disclose these items in different notes, use different fiscal year-ends and classify acquisitions or leases differently. A useful tracker therefore records the underlying components and their definitions instead of relying on one “capital expenditure” label.

India’s national accounts also include investment outside the set of companies you can easily observe. Coverage can differ by institutional sector, company size, unincorporated businesses, infrastructure vehicles, foreign subsidiaries, leases and timing. Those boundaries explain why a company panel will not exactly equal GFCF.
The three data layers to combine
1. MoSPI national accounts: the macro benchmark
Download the MoSPI national-accounts tables for GFCF by institutional sector. Keep current-price and constant-price series in separate fields and record the base year printed in the table. Current prices show rupee values in the prices of each year; constant prices are intended to show volume changes after removing price effects. Mixing the two creates a misleading growth rate.
An 11 August 2025 Lok Sabha answer reported that private non-financial-corporation GFCF at current prices increased from ₹19.01 lakh crore in 2018–19 to ₹29.68 lakh crore in 2023–24, an increase of about 56%. That is a national-accounts benchmark, not a forecast and not a direct total of listed-company additions.
2. MoSPI’s corporate CAPEX survey
MoSPI’s first corporate CAPEX survey covered actual CAPEX in 2021–22, 2022–23 and 2023–24 and intentions for 2024–25 and 2025–26. It used an MCA-based frame of large enterprises and collected asset, industry, objective and financing details. The survey is useful for seeing the direction and composition of investment among large firms, but its frame does not represent every private enterprise.
The inaugural release reported a 58.3% response rate and cautioned that respondents could be conservative when reporting plans. Some infrastructure special-purpose vehicles were outside the frame. The 2026 survey continues to target selected large MCA-registered enterprises meeting turnover criteria and collects past, current and future CAPEX. Because selection and response can change, use the survey as a distinct layer rather than silently blending it into a company-panel total.
3. Company filings: the auditable micro data
Build a fixed panel from audited annual reports and MCA/Registrar of Companies filings. RBI describes its company-finance studies this way: “The source of data for CF studies is the audited annual accounts of companies.” RBI supplements those accounts with directors’ reports, notes and statutory disclosures. Filings let you inspect each company’s asset roll-forward, cash payments, acquisitions and disposals, then aggregate companies on a consistent basis.
Set up a source and provenance register
Before extracting numbers, create one record for every observation. This prevents a revised national-accounts table or a restated annual report from being mistaken for a new economic movement.

Choose and freeze a company panel
Define the universe
Start with a written inclusion rule, such as private non-financial companies above a chosen size threshold, and apply it in every year. Classify each company by principal activity or NIC code. Keep financial companies separate unless your question explicitly includes them; their balance sheets and investment concepts are not comparable with industrial or service firms.
Do not add companies only in years when their capex rises. If a company enters or leaves the panel, flag the event and maintain two outputs: a fixed-company growth panel and a changing-universe level series. RBI notes that absolute aggregates from company-finance studies are not strictly comparable when the selected-company sample changes; common-company panels restore comparability for growth analysis.
Preserve fiscal-year timing
A company whose year ends in December does not line up perfectly with a March year-end national-accounts year. Keep the original dates and, if you create a calendar-year estimate, document the allocation rule. Never relabel a nine-month or 15-month reporting period as a normal year.

Record coverage gaps
Mark companies with missing annual reports, non-consolidated accounts, discontinued operations, foreign subsidiaries or major acquisitions. A consolidated statement may include assets outside India, while a national-accounts comparison may be intended to describe domestic production. Do not quietly treat the two perimeters as identical.
Extract capex fields from each filing
Use a structured extraction sheet rather than copying one headline number. The following fields cover the disclosures most often needed for reconciliation.
| Field | What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Gross PPE additions | Additions to buildings, plant, machinery, equipment and other tangible assets before depreciation | Closest filing-based measure of new tangible capacity |
| Capital work in progress | Opening balance, additions, transfers to PPE and closing balance | Shows projects under construction and prevents double counting after commissioning |
| Intangible-asset additions | Software, development costs and other capitalized intangibles, with the company’s definition | Captures non-physical investment that may be excluded from a narrow PPE total |
| Right-of-use or lease additions | New right-of-use assets recognized under the applicable lease standard | Separates lease recognition from cash purchases and avoids inconsistent totals |
| Acquisitions | Assets or businesses acquired, including amounts recognized in a business combination | Distinguishes purchased capacity from internally built assets |
| Disposals | Cost and accumulated depreciation removed, plus proceeds where disclosed | Explains why the closing asset balance can fall despite new additions |
| Depreciation and impairment | Current-period depreciation, amortization and impairment charges | Needed to reconcile gross additions with net fixed assets |
| Cash purchases | Cash-flow statement payments for PPE and, separately, intangibles or acquisitions when shown | Tests whether accounting additions were paid for in the period |
Read the PPE note, CWIP note, intangible-assets note, lease note, acquisition note, cash-flow statement, directors’ report and capex commentary together. A directors’ report may describe a project as “capex” even when the balance-sheet note records a lease or an acquisition. Keep the company’s wording in an extraction note and map it to your standardized field only after reviewing the accounting treatment.
Reconcile the balance sheet to cash flow
For each company and year, perform a roll-forward check. A simplified tangible-asset reconciliation is:

Then compare the additions and acquisition movements with the cash-flow statement’s purchases of property, plant and equipment. The figures will not always match: non-cash acquisitions, foreign-exchange translation, asset transfers, reclassifications, lease recognition and deferred consideration can create differences. Record the reason instead of forcing the numbers to tie.
For net fixed assets, use a separate check:
Closing net fixed assets = opening net fixed assets + gross additions − depreciation − impairment − disposals at carrying amount ± other movements
Do not call net fixed-asset growth “capex.” Net growth is the result after depreciation, impairment and disposals. A company can have substantial gross investment while its net fixed assets grow slowly, or even decline.

Keep actual, provisional and intended CAPEX separate
Actual
Actual CAPEX is spending or asset recognition for a completed reporting period, supported by audited accounts or a finalized survey response. Use the company’s fiscal period and retain the accounting basis.
Provisional
Provisional figures are estimates that the publisher or company identifies as subject to revision. Keep the provisional flag even if the number appears precise. Replace it with the revised observation rather than overwriting the history.
Intended
Intended CAPEX is a plan, budget or announced project amount. It is not realized investment. MoSPI’s survey estimated provisional 2024–25 CAPEX per enterprise for acquiring new assets at ₹172.2 crore. That figure belongs in an intentions or provisional-plans column, not in an aggregate of realized 2024–25 spending.
The survey’s historical and planned per-enterprise figures illustrate why status labels matter:
| Measure | 2021–22 | 2022–23 | 2023–24 | 2024–25 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Average gross fixed assets per private-corporate enterprise | ₹3,151.9 crore | ₹3,279.4 crore | ₹4,183.3 crore | not stated in MoSPI’s 2025 figures |
| Estimated CAPEX per enterprise | ₹109.2 crore | ₹148.8 crore | ₹107.6 crore | ₹172.2 crore provisional estimate for acquiring new assets |
The 2021–22 through 2023–24 CAPEX values are reported historical estimates; the 2024–25 value is explicitly provisional and limited to acquiring new assets. Do not infer a five-year trend by placing these columns on the same footing without their status and definition.

Compare company data with GFCF without forcing a match
Build a comparison table with one row per fiscal year and separate columns for:
- MoSPI private non-financial-corporation GFCF at current prices.
- MoSPI private non-financial-corporation GFCF at constant prices, with the table’s base year.
- MoSPI corporate-survey actual or provisional CAPEX, with its large-enterprise coverage.
- Fixed-panel company gross additions and cash purchases.
- Fixed-panel net fixed-asset growth.
- Intended CAPEX, shown separately and excluded from realized totals.
Use the comparison to explain direction and composition, not to claim that one column should equal another. Differences commonly arise from:
- Coverage: the survey targets selected large MCA-registered enterprises, while GFCF covers a wider institutional-sector concept.
- Institutional boundaries: GFCF may include investment by entities not present in your private-company panel, while consolidated companies may include foreign operations.
- Leases and acquisitions: accounting recognition can create assets without the same-period cash purchase of domestic machinery.
- Disposals and depreciation: net assets remove these items; gross GFCF and gross additions do not represent the same net concept.
- Prices: a current-price rupee increase can reflect inflation as well as more physical investment.
- Timing: differing year-ends, project commissioning dates and survey reference periods shift spending between years.
- Non-response and omissions: the inaugural survey’s 58.3% response rate and excluded infrastructure special-purpose vehicles limit direct extrapolation.
When you present a ratio such as panel capex divided by GFCF, describe it as a coverage-dependent indicator. It is not a national private-capex share unless the perimeters, prices and periods have been harmonized.
Use net fixed assets as a separate health check
The 11 August 2025 parliamentary answer cited RBI data showing net fixed-asset growth of private limited companies of 7.6% in 2021–22, 10.3% in 2022–23 and 10.2% in 2023–24. These are net fixed-asset growth rates, not gross capex rates. Compare them with your panel’s net roll-forward only after checking whether the company sample, consolidation basis and accounting periods match.
A divergence can be informative. Rising gross additions with slower net growth may indicate heavy depreciation, impairments or disposals. Strong net growth with modest cash purchases may reflect acquisitions, lease recognition, revaluations or consolidation changes. Investigate the notes before assigning an economic explanation.
Standardize and aggregate the panel
- Freeze the membership list. Save the inclusion rule, company identifiers and entry or exit dates.
- Normalize units. Convert rupees, thousands, lakhs and crores into one analysis unit while retaining the source unit.
- Map fields. Assign each disclosure to gross PPE, CWIP, intangibles, right-of-use assets, acquisitions, disposals or another documented category.
- Separate bases. Keep consolidated and standalone accounts in different series unless your stated question requires one and every company is treated consistently.
- Align periods. Aggregate only comparable fiscal periods; flag short, long or non-March years.
- Calculate growth. For a fixed panel, use
(current-year total ÷ prior-year total − 1) × 100. Do not compute growth for a changing universe without labeling the composition effect. - Run reconciliation checks. Compare PPE-note movements with cash-flow purchases and investigate material differences.
- Aggregate by sector. Use principal activity or NIC categories and publish both sector totals and the all-panel total.
- Attach provenance. Carry source, date, status, price basis and extraction notes into every aggregate.
Interpretation framework: five comparisons that prevent mistakes
| Comparison | What it answers | Common error |
|---|---|---|
| Actual versus intended CAPEX | What firms spent versus what they planned | Adding announcements to realized investment |
| Gross additions versus net fixed assets | How much new capacity was added versus how the asset stock changed after depreciation and disposals | Calling net growth “capex” |
| Fixed-panel growth versus changing-universe totals | Underlying investment growth versus changes in companies covered | Attributing acquisitions or exits to economic growth |
| Current-price versus constant-price GFCF | Rupee spending versus volume movement | Reading inflation as real investment growth |
| Large-enterprise survey versus full private economy | Investment behavior of selected large firms versus the broader institutional sector | Extrapolating survey totals to every private business |
Common failure modes and fixes
Using a single annual-report “capex” number
Problem: the number may exclude CWIP, leases or acquisitions, or may be a management plan rather than an accounting amount.
Fix: extract the asset notes and cash-flow purchases, then document the definition used.
Mixing standalone and consolidated accounts
Problem: the same group can appear to invest very different amounts depending on whether subsidiaries are included.

Fix: choose one basis for the panel and keep the other as a separately labeled series.
Comparing nominal company data with real GFCF
Problem: price effects contaminate the comparison.
Fix: compare nominal with current-price GFCF, or deflate company data using a documented method before comparing with constant-price GFCF. Do not imply that a deflator is provided by the filing.
Ignoring restatements
Problem: a prior year can change after an accounting-policy revision or error correction.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A practical refresh schedule
Refresh the tracker when MoSPI releases a new national-accounts year or revision, when a new corporate CAPEX survey is published, and when annual reports or MCA filings for the panel become available. For each refresh:
- download and archive the new source document;
- check whether historical years were revised;
- run the fixed-panel and changing-universe aggregates separately;
- recalculate current-price and constant-price growth without crossing the two bases;
- review companies with major acquisitions, disposals, impairments or lease changes;
- update the response, coverage and status notes for survey data;
- publish a change log identifying additions, removals, restatements and methodology changes.
What a defensible published result looks like
A reader should be able to see, for every reported number, who measured it, what period it covers, which entities are included, whether it is actual or intended, which price basis applies and how it was reconciled. A concise result might state that MoSPI’s current-price private non-financial-corporation GFCF rose from ₹19.01 lakh crore in 2018–19 to ₹29.68 lakh crore in 2023–24, then show how a fixed panel of audited company accounts moved over the same periods, with coverage and accounting differences clearly disclosed.
This layered approach answers different questions without pretending they are the same question: GFCF describes the macro investment benchmark, the survey describes selected large enterprises and their plans, and filings show the accounting and cash evidence for named companies. Keeping those layers distinct is what makes India’s private-capex tracking reproducible.
