Use Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition in Google Analytics 4 (GA4). Start with Session source / medium, then add Session source, Session medium, Landing page + query string, and key-event metrics. Google News visits are normally identified through an HTTP referrer, while GA4 can classify some AI referrals in its native AI Assistant channel. Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode may instead appear as google / organic, and visits whose attribution signals are lost can appear as (direct) / (none).
The report can show measurable referral clicks and their outcomes; it cannot prove that an AI summary influenced a visit when no identifiable click signal survives.
What GA4 can—and cannot—identify
GA4 traffic-source dimensions describe where a visit originated and how the user arrived. Source is the platform or site directing traffic; medium describes the type of acquisition, such as referral, organic search, or a manually tagged campaign. The source/medium combination is the practical starting point for separating Google News, search, AI assistants, and unattributed sessions.
There are three different measurement situations:
- Identifiable referral: a browser passes an HTTP referrer, so GA4 can record the referring platform or site.
- Explicit campaign attribution: a URL contains UTM parameters, which populate source, medium, campaign, and related dimensions.
- Inferred or missing attribution: the visit is grouped as ordinary organic search or direct because no distinct referrer or campaign signal is available.
These categories matter because a row in GA4 is evidence of the signal that reached Analytics, not a complete record of every influence on the user’s decision to click.

Prepare your property before interpreting traffic
Confirm that landing pages send GA4 data
Open an article URL in a test browser and verify that the GA4 tag fires and that a session arrives in the property. If article pages do not send sessions, no source or medium filter can recover the missing data. Check the pages that Google News or search users actually reach, not only the home page.
Use a date range that includes the suspected visits
Set the report period to cover the publication, update, or campaign window you are investigating. Keep the same date range when comparing source rows, landing pages, and key events so that volume and quality are comparable.
Know which attribution signal you are testing
For Google News, you are looking for a referrer hostname. For links you control, you are looking for UTM values. For AI traffic, you may see GA4’s native AI Assistant classification, an identifiable platform source, ordinary Google organic traffic, or no usable signal at all.

Step-by-step: find the traffic in GA4
- Open the report: go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
- Select the primary dimension: choose Session source / medium. This displays rows such as a referrer paired with
referral, Google paired withorganic, or a campaign’s manually supplied values. - Search likely values: look for
news.google.com, other Google News referrer hostnames observed in your data, google / organic, and any AI-platform sources. Search is a way to isolate rows; it does not create attribution that GA4 never received. - Add source and medium separately: switch or add Session source and Session medium when you need to group several mediums under one platform or find a medium value such as
ai-assistant. - Add the destination: use Landing page + query string (or Landing page) as a secondary dimension. This shows which articles received the visits.
- Add outcome columns: include engaged sessions, conversions, revenue, or other key events. Traffic volume alone does not show whether a referral produced a useful visit.
- Compare consistently: retain the same date range, dimensions, and event definitions when comparing News, AI, organic, referral, and direct rows.
Google describes Traffic acquisition as the report for understanding where new and returning users come from. Source and medium should therefore be your first diagnostic view, with landing pages and key events added for interpretation.
Track Google News traffic
Use the HTTP referrer as the primary signal
Google Publisher Center guidance says to differentiate Google News traffic by finding the HTTP referrer. In GA4, inspect Session source / medium and the landing-page dimension for referrer hostnames associated with a Google News surface. news.google.com is a useful value to search for when it appears in your property.

A News referral is strongest when the source identifies a Google News surface, the medium is a referral-type value, and the landing page is an article that was eligible for or displayed in News. Report those dimensions together rather than labeling every Google visit as News.
Allow for web and app routing differences
Google News can route users through different web or app experiences. The hostname visible to your site can therefore vary, and routing can change over time. Keep the referrer-hostname pattern as an operational check: review the actual values arriving in your property instead of hard-coding one hostname as a permanent definition.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Understand why a News visit can become direct
Google Analytics Help lists missing UTM parameters, redirects that strip parameters, and ad blockers as causes of (direct) / (none). Redirect chains, canonicalization or cross-domain hops, and consent controls can also prevent the browser from delivering a usable referral signal. A direct row means that GA4 lacks a clear referral source; it does not reliably mean that the user typed the URL.
Use landing pages to validate the pattern
After isolating a News referrer, add Landing page + query string. A concentrated set of article URLs is more actionable than a total count: it shows which headlines, topics, or publication dates received the clicks and lets you compare engagement and conversions for those pages.
Track AI-summary referrals
Recognize GA4’s native AI Assistant channel
GA4’s default-channel documentation defines AI Assistant as the channel where the medium is exactly ai-assistant and the referrer matches Google’s recognized AI Assistant list. Use the default channel group to obtain that native roll-up, then inspect Session source / medium to see the platform detail behind it.

Because the rule depends on both an exact medium and a recognized referrer, an AI-related visit that lacks either signal will not necessarily appear in AI Assistant. Do not infer the channel from a page URL or from the fact that a user later mentions an AI tool.

Why Google AI Overview and AI Mode may look like search
Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode may not carry a distinct AI referrer. A current practitioner guide reports that these clicks can appear as google / organic when no separate referrer is passed. In that case GA4 cannot separate an AI-summary click from an ordinary Google results click using standard source and medium dimensions.
Seeing google / organic is therefore not proof that AI had no role, and it is not proof that every organic visit came from an AI summary. It is the observable classification that survived the click.
Build a custom view for sources outside the native list
For AI traffic that is not captured by the native AI Assistant channel, create a custom channel group or an Exploration using the source, medium, and referrer values you actually observe. Base each rule on a measured value, document the rule, and timestamp the list. Google’s recognized AI list can change, so a custom definition should be versioned rather than treated as permanent.
Keep native and custom classifications separate in reporting. The native channel follows Google’s current definition; a custom group is your organization’s operational rule and may include sources that Google does not currently classify as AI Assistant.

Use UTM parameters when you control the link
Manual UTM tagging is the most explicit form of attribution for links you publish or distribute. Google says that UTM parameters populate source, medium, campaign, and related traffic-source dimensions.
Adopt one naming convention and apply it consistently. For example:
https://example.com/article&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=summer-update
utm_sourceidentifies the sending platform or partner.utm_mediumidentifies the acquisition type, such asreferral.utm_campaignidentifies the distribution effort or editorial initiative.
Use lowercase values, document allowed names, and avoid changing conventions halfway through a reporting period. UTMs help only when the tagged URL is the one clicked and the parameters survive redirects. They do not retroactively label untagged Google News links or ordinary AI Overview clicks.
Compare the available signals
| Method | Signal available | Typical GA4 visibility | Reliability limits | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP referrer | Browser-supplied referring hostname | Session source / medium and landing page; often a referral classification | Can be changed or removed by app routing, redirects, consent choices, privacy tools, or ad blockers | Identifying Google News surfaces and other referring sites |
| UTM parameters | Explicit source, medium, campaign, and related values in the URL | Campaign and traffic-source dimensions | Works only when the tagged URL is used and parameters are preserved | Links you control, partner distribution, and repeatable campaign reporting |
| Native AI Assistant channel | Medium exactly ai-assistant plus a referrer on Google’s recognized list |
Default-channel AI Assistant row, with platform detail in source/medium | Excludes AI clicks without the required referrer or medium | Consistent reporting for AI assistants recognized by GA4 |
| Google organic inference | Google source with an organic medium, without a distinct AI signal | google / organic |
Cannot distinguish ordinary search from AI Overview or AI Mode clicks | Reporting total Google organic traffic while disclosing the AI attribution limit |
| Direct or none | No usable referral or campaign signal | (direct) / (none) |
May include stripped referrals, missing parameters, privacy tools, or genuine direct visits | Diagnosing attribution loss, not proving typed or bookmarked visits |
| Server or CDN logs | Request-level referrer and URL data captured outside the browser analytics tag | Separate log analysis, not a GA4 channel row | Still subject to privacy controls and may lack user or conversion context | Validating whether a browser signal reached the site when GA4 is incomplete |
Troubleshoot common GA4 results
You see no Google News row
- Confirm the article landing page sends GA4 sessions.
- Search Session source rather than only a preselected channel group.
- Check the date range and test several article landing pages.
- Inspect server or CDN referrer data to determine whether a News referrer reached the site but was not retained by the browser analytics path.
An absence of a News row means no usable News signal was recorded in the selected GA4 data. It does not establish that no one clicked from News.
Known referrals appear as direct
- Follow the complete redirect chain and check whether query parameters are removed.
- Verify that any cross-domain transition preserves the session and attribution.
- Check consent and ad-blocking behavior in the affected browser or app.
- Confirm that the original link did not omit required UTM parameters.
After correcting the path, test with a fresh visit. Historical sessions that were already recorded as direct cannot be relabeled by changing the site configuration.

AI traffic is absent from AI Assistant
- Inspect Session source / medium for
google / organicand other observed AI-platform values. - Check whether the medium is exactly
ai-assistant; similar wording does not satisfy GA4’s native rule. - Review whether the referrer is on Google’s current recognized list.
- If the source is measurable but not natively grouped, add it to a documented custom channel group or Exploration.
One article has traffic but no key events
First verify that key-event collection is working on the destination and subsequent pages. Then compare engagement, conversions, or revenue by landing page and source/medium. A source row with sessions but no events may describe low-intent traffic, a tagging problem, or a consented-out measurement path; GA4 alone does not distinguish those explanations without additional diagnostics.
Measure quality, not just referral volume
For each Google News or AI-related row, add the metrics that represent your business outcome: engaged sessions, conversions, revenue, or another configured key event. Keep the landing-page dimension beside those metrics so an apparently successful source can be traced to the articles that produced it.
Do not publish a conversion rate or traffic share for News or AI unless your property has actually measured it for the stated period and definition. There is no universal authoritative percentage for either source, and performance varies with audience, article type, routing, and attribution loss.

When GA4 is not enough
GA4 is browser-based attribution. If the business question is whether a known click carried a referrer before consent, a redirect, or an analytics block removed it, compare GA4 with web-server or CDN logs. Logs can show request-level referrer and landing-URL evidence even when the GA4 event is unavailable, although they will not automatically provide GA4 users, sessions, or key-event context.
Use the two systems for different purposes: GA4 connects acquisition to on-site behavior and outcomes; logs help investigate whether attribution data reached the site at all. Reconcile their time zones, URL normalization, bot handling, and privacy rules before comparing counts.
Define and document your reporting rules
Write down what each label means in your dashboard:
- Google News referral: a click whose HTTP referrer identifies a Google News surface.
- AI Assistant: GA4’s native classification requiring medium
ai-assistantand a recognized referrer. - AI Overview or AI Mode: potentially included in
google / organicwhen no distinct referrer is passed. - Direct: no clear referral or campaign signal, not proof of a typed URL.
- UTM campaign: explicit manual attribution whose parameter values populate GA4 traffic-source dimensions.
Record the date of each custom AI source list and the exact source, medium, and referrer rules. When Google’s channel definitions or routing change, you can explain why a trend break reflects classification rather than audience behavior.
A practical recurring workflow
- Verify that GA4 is receiving article landing-page sessions.
- Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and select Session source / medium.
- Search for Google News referrer hostnames,
google / organic,ai-assistant, and observed AI-platform sources. - Add Landing page + query string and key-event columns.
- Separate native AI Assistant traffic from custom classifications in the report.
- Investigate direct rows when redirects, missing UTMs, consent, or ad blockers could have removed attribution.
- Use server or CDN logs when the decision requires evidence beyond browser analytics.
- Save the source definitions, date range, and rule version with the published report.
This workflow gives you a defensible account of what GA4 observed: identifiable News referrals, native AI Assistant sessions, ordinary Google organic traffic that may include AI-summary clicks, and unattributed sessions that require cautious interpretation.
