Track Ethereum’s supply changes by measuring three separate flows over the same time window: new ETH issued to consensus-layer validators, ETH burned as EIP-1559 base fees, and reductions from validator penalties or slashing. Use Ultrasound.money for the aggregate issuance, burn, and supply picture; Etherscan for block-level checks; and Beaconcha.in for validator-specific rewards and penalties. Record each metric’s definition, units, interval, and observation time before calculating a net change.

The accounting model: what adds ETH and what removes it

ETH does not have a permanent maximum supply. Its supply changes dynamically because protocol issuance adds ETH while fee burns, penalties, and slashing remove ETH. The direction over any period depends on the size of each flow during that period.

Flow What happens Where to inspect it How to treat it in a calculation
Consensus-layer issuance New ETH is credited by the proof-of-stake protocol to validators for participation. Aggregate supply dashboards and validator records Add it to the period’s ETH created.
EIP-1559 base-fee burn The base fee paid by transactions is destroyed by the protocol. Aggregate burn dashboards and individual blocks Subtract it from the period’s ETH created.
Priority fee An optional tip paid to the block proposer. Block and transaction details Do not count it as burned or as consensus-layer issuance.
Validator penalties and slashing ETH is removed from a validator’s balance for protocol violations or missed duties. Validator-level records Subtract it separately from the period’s net supply change when the data set includes it.
Proposer income from unburnt fees A block proposer can receive priority fees and other unburnt gas-fee income. Block-level and validator-level views Keep it separate from protocol issuance and from the base-fee burn.

A simple reconciliation for a defined interval is:

Net ETH change = consensus-layer issuance − base-fee burn − validator penalties and slashing

That expression is useful only when all terms cover the same start and end times and use compatible definitions. A dashboard’s displayed “net supply” may include or exclude particular components, so read its labels before comparing the number with an independently collected issuance or burn figure.

What changed at The Merge

The Merge, completed in September 2022, moved Ethereum’s proof-of-stake operation to the consensus layer. Since then, execution-layer issuance has been zero. Validator rewards continue on the consensus layer, and their total depends partly on how much ETH is staked and how validators perform.

This distinction prevents a common error: looking for post-Merge “miner issuance” in execution-layer blocks. The execution layer still records transactions, gas fees, and burns, but new protocol ETH is issued through consensus-layer validator accounting.

Ethereum.org’s Merge explainer gives historical illustrations rather than current rates:

Illustrative figure Qualification
Approximately 13,000 ETH per day Estimated pre-Merge miner issuance, published as a historical comparison.
Approximately 1,700 ETH per day Estimated staking issuance when about 14 million ETH was staked.
Approximately 88% reduction Estimated issuance reduction after The Merge, based on those historical assumptions.

The page was last updated June 6, 2026, but these figures describe the conditions used in its explanation, not the rate on that date. Do not use them as a current inflation quote.

Step-by-step workflow for tracking ETH supply flows

1. Define the question and the interval

Decide whether you need a live overview, a daily comparison, a historical report, or a single validator’s rewards. Write down the exact start and end timestamps, the timezone, and the unit (ETH, gwei, or wei) before opening a dashboard.

  • For a supply report, use a complete interval such as one UTC day or a specified range of blocks.
  • For validator performance, use epochs or a date range that the validator service supports.
  • For a live snapshot, record the observation timestamp because every displayed total can change continuously.

2. Start with an aggregate dashboard

Ethereum.org identifies Ultrasound.money as a real-time source for supply, issuance, and burn rates. Use its aggregate view to see how the services present total supply, new issuance, and burned ETH. Record the dashboard name, each metric label, the selected time range, the displayed units, and the time you observed the values.

Do not copy a number without its interval. A lifetime cumulative burn cannot be subtracted from a one-day issuance rate, and a rate such as ETH per day cannot be compared directly with a balance change measured over several weeks.

3. Verify what the fee metric means

Use the EIP-1559 specification to confirm the transaction-fee mechanics. The base fee is burned; the priority fee is paid to the block producer. Therefore, a page labeled “total fees” is not automatically a page showing “ETH burned.”

When a dashboard offers several fee fields, identify the one explicitly described as the base fee or burned amount. If it reports only total transaction fees, inspect blocks or transactions separately before treating that value as a burn.

4. Add validator-level context when rewards matter

Ethereum.org points readers to Beaconcha.in for validator statistics and detailed validator records. Use it when you need to distinguish a validator’s consensus rewards from missed-duty penalties, slashing, or income received for proposing a block.

Validator rewards and penalties are issued each epoch, approximately every 6.4 minutes, according to the Ethereum Foundation Staking Launchpad validator FAQs accessed October 13, 2026. A single epoch record is not the same as an annualized yield; aggregate enough epochs for the period you are analyzing and preserve the service’s units.

5. Check blocks with an explorer

Etherscan is identified by Ethereum.org as a block explorer with supply metrics. Use it to examine individual blocks, transaction fee fields, and block-proposer information when an aggregate number needs a spot check.

A block-level check is especially useful when you want to demonstrate that a transaction paid a base fee and a priority fee, or when you need to explain why a proposer received unburnt fee income even though the base fee was destroyed.

6. Reconcile the flows

Put the observations into a table or spreadsheet with one row per interval:

How consensus-layer staking rewards work

Consensus rewards compensate validators for duties such as timely attestations, block proposals, and sync committee participation. Validator reward documentation describes the base reward as a function of a validator’s effective balance and the network’s total active balance.

Why a validator’s rate changes

The per-validator base reward declines as total active balance rises. More validators can therefore increase aggregate issuance while reducing the base reward available to each validator. Network participation and validator performance both matter, so a single advertised percentage cannot represent every validator or every period.

Why rewards are not the same as supply issuance

A validator’s account can show several kinds of income. Consensus-layer rewards are protocol issuance, while a proposer can also receive unburnt gas fees from a block. The latter is paid by users through the transaction-fee mechanism and should not be reported as newly issued ETH.

How to interpret epoch records

  • Separate positive reward entries from negative penalties.
  • Check whether the record covers attestations, proposals, sync committees, or another duty.
  • Aggregate the same type of entry over the chosen period before comparing validators.
  • Keep the service’s distinction between effective balance and actual balance; they are not interchangeable fields.

How EIP-1559 fee burns work

EIP-1559 adjusts the base fee in response to demand relative to a gas target. Every eligible transaction pays that protocol-set base fee, and the protocol destroys the corresponding ETH. The specification states: “The base fee is always burned (i.e. it is destroyed by the protocol).”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The priority fee is different. It is an optional payment to the block producer, so it remains an incentive for proposing a block rather than being removed from supply. A transaction’s total fee can therefore exceed its burned amount.

Reading a transaction or block

  1. Identify the transaction’s gas used.
  2. Identify the base-fee rate for the block, normally expressed in gwei.
  3. Multiply the applicable base-fee rate by gas used to derive the base-fee amount for that transaction.
  4. Keep the priority-fee amount in a separate field.
  5. Sum the base-fee amounts across the same block range or time interval.

This procedure explains why high network activity can produce more burning: greater gas use and higher base fees increase the amount destroyed. It does not imply that burn always exceeds issuance.

The historical 16-gwei illustration

Ethereum.org’s Merge explainer used an average gas price of at least 16 gwei for a day as an illustration of burning roughly enough ETH to offset its then-estimated 1,700 ETH of daily staking issuance. That was a dated example based on historical issuance and usage assumptions, not a permanent break-even threshold. Current issuance, gas use, and base fees differ.

Penalties, slashing, and other reductions

Validator penalties and slashing reduce validator balances through consensus rules. They are not EIP-1559 burns and should not be described as transaction-fee destruction. A supply analysis that includes them should show them in a separate column.

Penalties can result from missed or late duties, while slashing is associated with serious protocol violations. The exact accounting displayed by a validator service may distinguish individual duties and events. Preserve those labels instead of combining every negative entry into “burn.”

When comparing an aggregate supply dashboard with validator records, determine whether the dashboard’s net figure includes penalties and slashing. If that inclusion is not stated, report the dashboard value as displayed and avoid claiming that it is a complete decomposition.

Choosing the right tracking tool

Need Best-fit source named by Ethereum documentation What it is useful for Caution
Overall ETH supply, issuance, and burn picture Ultrasound.money Real-time aggregate visualization of supply changes and rates. Record the displayed definition, interval, units, and timestamp; live methodology details are not independently established here.
Block and transaction inspection Etherscan Block explorer views and supply metrics, including fee fields for spot checks. Do not equate total fees with burned ETH without isolating the base fee.
Validator performance Beaconcha.in Validator statistics, rewards, penalties, and detailed validator records. Validator income is not identical to aggregate issuance; proposer fee income must remain separate.

These services answer different questions. An aggregate dashboard is efficient for supply direction, an explorer is better for explaining a particular block, and a validator record is necessary when the question concerns one validator’s duties or balance.

How to report a live ETH inflation or deflation reading

A responsible report includes five items:

  • Timestamp: when the value was observed, including timezone.
  • Interval: the start and end of the measurement window.
  • Units: ETH, gwei, wei, ETH per day, or another clearly stated unit.
  • Definitions: whether issuance, burns, penalties, and proposer income are included.
  • Source view: the dashboard, explorer, or validator page used.

Avoid saying that ETH is simply “deflationary” or “inflationary” without a period. Burn can exceed issuance during some high-demand periods, while issuance can exceed burn during others as network demand and staking participation change.

Illustrative calculation

Suppose, purely as an example, that a chosen interval records 1,000 ETH of consensus issuance, 1,200 ETH of base-fee burn, and 5 ETH of validator penalties. The net result would be 1,000 − 1,200 − 5 = −205 ETH. That arithmetic describes the direction for that interval only; it is not a current Ethereum measurement.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling all fees a burn

Problem: A report copies a “total fees” number and labels it burned ETH.
Fix: Isolate the EIP-1559 base-fee component. Keep priority fees and other proposer income separate.

Mixing live rates with historical totals

Problem: A daily issuance rate is compared with a lifetime cumulative burn.
Fix: Convert both to the same interval and unit, or do not calculate a net result.

Using the historical Merge figures as current data

Problem: The approximately 1,700 ETH-per-day illustration is presented as today’s issuance.
Fix: Label it as a historical estimate tied to about 14 million ETH staked and the June 6, 2026 page update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating validator rewards as a fixed yield

Problem: One validator’s reward is generalized to the entire network.
Fix: Account for total active balance, effective balance, validator duties, missed performance, and the length of the observation period.

Calling penalties a fee burn

Problem: A negative validator entry is merged into EIP-1559 burn totals.
Fix: Report penalties and slashing as distinct consensus-layer reductions.

Ignoring proposer income

Problem: A validator’s block reward is described entirely as protocol issuance.
Fix: Separate consensus rewards from unburnt gas fees paid to the proposer.

Quoting a “current” rate without a timestamp

Problem: A changing dashboard value is published without a date or interval.
Fix: Preserve the observation time, selected range, units, and metric label in the report.

A repeatable tracking template

For a weekly or monthly report, use one row per interval and retain the underlying observations:

  1. Set a fixed timezone and interval convention.
  2. At the end of each interval, record aggregate issuance and burn values from the same dashboard view.
  3. Record whether each value is a rate, interval total, or lifetime counter.
  4. Use Etherscan to inspect representative blocks when fee composition needs verification.
  5. Use Beaconcha.in for any validator-specific reward, penalty, or slashing question.
  6. Calculate issuance minus burn minus separately identified penalties.
  7. Publish the source names, observation timestamps, definitions, and any unresolved exclusions alongside the result.

This process produces a reproducible series without pretending that a live dashboard’s number is permanent or that differently defined metrics are directly interchangeable.
