The most reliable way to follow Hera is ESA’s official Hera mission page. It is the agency’s public hub for dated status stories, mission background, videos, images and links to the social accounts ESA currently uses for operations updates. As of ESA reporting available on 13 October 2026, Hera was preparing for braking manoeuvres before reaching the Didymos asteroid system; those manoeuvres and the rendezvous were still upcoming plans, not completed events.

This guide shows how to check each milestone, distinguish a planned burn from a confirmed result, and interpret the science updates Hera is expected to produce after its close-up survey.

Start with ESA’s Hera mission page

Bookmark the ESA Hera mission page and use it as your source of record. The page gathers the latest dated stories rather than presenting an unqualified live-status claim. It also links to mission operations information, frequently asked questions, background explanations, videos, images and ESA’s current social channels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you open the page, first look at the date and headline of the newest story. A new item can change the interpretation of an earlier schedule: a manoeuvre described as “planned” in one article may later be reported as completed, delayed or rescheduled in another. Treat the newest dated ESA report as the status of record, while retaining the earlier story for the technical plan it described.

What ESA’s published schedule said on 13 October 2026

ESA’s operational coverage published on 7 October 2026 described an October braking sequence designed to put Hera on course for the Didymos system. The schedule was:

Event Published plan How to interpret it
BRM-1 braking manoeuvre 15 October 2026; a 93-minute burn Planned at the time of the report. Check a later ESA story for confirmation.
BRM-2 braking manoeuvre 22 October 2026; approximately 31 minutes Also a plan, not a result, in the 7 October report.
Transition manoeuvres Three smaller manoeuvres later in October The report did not establish their completed status.
Rendezvous listing November 2026 on ESA’s mission page A mission-page schedule entry; it should not be read as proof that orbit insertion had already occurred.

The operations description uses the term “impulsive rendezvous” for the October activity and then describes an orbit-insertion sequence. The mission page separately lists rendezvous in November. These dates describe different parts of the approach and are not evidence of a completed arrival on 13 October. To establish completion, look for a later ESA report that explicitly says a burn was executed and gives the resulting trajectory or navigation status.

A repeatable way to check every update

1. Open the latest-story list

Begin at the Hera hub and identify the newest dated article. Read the full item, not only the headline: operational stories often distinguish a commanded manoeuvre, the spacecraft’s confirmation signal and the subsequent analysis of the trajectory. Save the publication date with your notes so an old schedule cannot be mistaken for current status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Separate “planned,” “under way” and “completed”

Use the wording in ESA’s report as a status label:

  • Planned or scheduled: ESA gives a future date, duration or manoeuvre name. It is an intention that remains subject to flight-dynamics approval and spacecraft conditions.
  • Under way: ESA says the command sequence or burn is in progress. This does not yet establish the final orbit.
  • Completed or successful: ESA reports that the manoeuvre occurred and normally provides the resulting navigation or trajectory assessment.
  • Delayed, modified or scrubbed: ESA reports a change to the plan. Replace the earlier date in your notes rather than treating both as current.

3. Check the operations context

Use the operations material linked from the hub to understand where a dated event fits in the mission. Hera is controlled from ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany. Communications use ESA’s Deep Space Antennas at Cebreros in Spain, Malargüe in Argentina and New Norcia in Australia. Those facilities support commanding and data return; they are not a public real-time map of the spacecraft.

4. Confirm which social accounts ESA currently links

The Hera page currently points readers to @operations.esa.int, @esaoperations and @esa_hera. Follow the links from the mission page itself because account availability and presentation can change. Social posts are useful for alerts and images, but use the dated ESA article for the authoritative wording of a milestone.

5. Record the source date and the event state

A simple log prevents confusion when several updates arrive close together. For each item, record the publication date, event name, whether it is planned or confirmed, and any stated result. Do not turn a planned date into a fact merely because it has passed; wait for ESA’s confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Compare updates by authority and precision

When two posts appear to disagree, compare three things in order: who published the item, when it was published and whether it describes a plan or an achieved milestone. An ESA mission-page entry can provide a broad month such as November 2026, while an operations story can describe individual October burns. The broader entry and the detailed sequence may both be accurate because they refer to different stages. Prefer the newest official wording for current status and keep the older item as context.

7. Save the technical vocabulary

Keep the exact labels BRM-1, BRM-2, transition manoeuvre, impulsive rendezvous and orbit insertion in your notes. Searching those terms within the Hera hub is more reliable than searching for a vague phrase such as “Hera arrival.” When an item uses “rendezvous,” check whether it means the approach activity, the target encounter or a later orbit-insertion step.

Is there a live Hera tracker?

The ESA pages reviewed for this guide provide public news, background and social links, but they do not establish a Hera-specific live telemetry feed or public real-time location tracker. The absence of a map is not evidence that the spacecraft is inactive. It means that verified public status is delivered through dated ESA communications rather than a consumer tracking dashboard.

A telescope is also not a practical way to follow Hera. The mission is travelling to the distant Didymos system, and the public information you need—manoeuvre status, navigation results and science findings—comes from ESA’s mission communications.

What Hera is investigating

NASA’s DART spacecraft deliberately struck Dimorphos, the smaller body in the Didymos binary system, in September 2022. Hera’s close-up survey is intended to determine what the impact changed and to measure the asteroid system in enough detail to improve models of kinetic-impact planetary defence.

The altered orbit

ESA’s FAQ cites a residual uncertainty of about 10% in measurements of Dimorphos’s altered orbit before Hera’s close inspection. That figure is a motivation for the mission, not a Hera result. Hera’s navigation and observations are intended to reduce uncertainty by measuring the binary system directly.

The impact site and surface

Hera will map the shape of Dimorphos and characterize the crater and surrounding ejecta produced by DART. Images and derived shape models should help researchers determine how the target’s surface responded, rather than relying only on observations from Earth and near-Earth spacecraft flybys.

Mass, gravity and internal structure

Measurements of the two bodies’ masses, gravity field and mutual orbit will show how material is distributed in the binary system. Those data are important for interpreting the change in Dimorphos’s orbit and for testing assumptions used in impact simulations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Surface composition and dust

Hera and its accompanying spacecraft will examine what the asteroids are made of, how their surfaces are arranged and how dust behaves around them. Composition results should be reported with the instrument and observation conditions that produced them; an image alone is not a complete mineralogical analysis.

Autonomous navigation in weak gravity

Hera is also a technology demonstration. Operating near small bodies with extremely weak gravity requires close-proximity navigation and carefully controlled trajectories. ESA’s future reports may therefore include navigation performance alongside geological findings.

Hera’s spacecraft and CubeSats

ESA’s mission page lists 12 instruments or payloads on the mission and two CubeSats. The small spacecraft are named Juventas and Milani, and their measurements complement Hera’s main survey.

Mission element Primary contribution described by ESA Updates to watch for
Hera spacecraft Close-up mapping of the Didymos system, impact aftermath, orbital dynamics and navigation performance Approach images, shape models, gravity and orbit solutions, and operational milestones
Juventas CubeSat Radar investigation of Dimorphos’s interior and contribution to gravity measurements Radar returns, internal-structure interpretations and deployment or proximity-operation status
Milani CubeSat Study of surface composition and dust Spectroscopic or compositional findings and dust-environment observations

The final scientific picture will come from combining these measurements with Hera’s own instruments. A single preliminary image or early navigation estimate should not be treated as the mission’s complete answer.

How to read future Hera science stories

Group each update by the quantity it actually measures. This makes it easier to tell a new result from a general mission announcement.

Arrival and navigation

These reports cover braking burns, trajectory determination, orbit insertion and close-proximity operations. Look for explicit statements about execution and the resulting orbit or pointing accuracy.

Shape and impact-site results

Images, mosaics and three-dimensional shape models describe the exterior and the DART impact area. Check whether a release shows raw or calibrated data and whether the interpretation is preliminary.

Mass, gravity and interior

Gravity solutions and Juventas radar observations address mass distribution and possible internal structure. These results generally require analysis of multiple measurements, so early numbers may be revised.

Composition and dust

Milani observations and Hera instruments can identify surface materials and particles around the system. Distinguish a detected spectral signature from a confirmed bulk composition, which may require modelling and comparison with laboratory data.

Planetary-defence implications

The mission’s broader value is improving predictions of how an asteroid responds to an impact. A useful update should identify the measured property—such as momentum transfer, crater size, density or internal structure—before drawing a conclusion about future deflection modelling.

Why operational dates can appear inconsistent

Mission schedules use different milestones. A braking burn changes the spacecraft’s velocity; a later transition manoeuvre refines the approach; rendezvous or orbit insertion marks a separate navigation state. One page may give the date of a manoeuvre sequence while another gives the month in which the spacecraft is expected to meet the target. Read the event name and the source date before deciding that two ESA pages conflict.

For the October 2026 sequence, the safest wording is that braking and arrival activity was expected in October, while ESA’s mission page listed rendezvous in November. Do not state that Hera had entered orbit unless a later ESA report confirms it.

What flight dynamics adds to the updates

Behind each burn announcement is a flight-dynamics process that turns tracking data into a trajectory decision. ESA Flight Dynamics Engineer Michael Mueller describes the team’s remit as: “The team performs Flight Dynamics operations for all ESA operated Science missions, including interplanetary missions and observatories, and now our agency’s first Space Safety mission as well!” That context explains why a burn report may be followed by a separate navigation-analysis story. The command can be sent and acknowledged before the team has completed the measurements needed to quantify the new trajectory.

A practical update checklist

  • Open the ESA Hera hub and sort your attention by the newest publication date.
  • Copy the exact event name, such as BRM-1 or BRM-2, into your notes.
  • Mark the event as planned, in progress, completed or changed using ESA’s wording.
  • Check whether the story reports a measured result or only a schedule.
  • Read the linked operations or FAQ material when a term is unfamiliar.
  • Use the ESA-linked social accounts for alerts, then verify important claims in a dated ESA article.
  • For science results, identify whether the measurement concerns navigation, shape, gravity, interior, composition or dust.
  • Keep preliminary findings separate from final analyses and later peer-reviewed interpretations.

What Hera’s updates can—and cannot—tell you

ESA’s public updates can establish the agency’s announced schedule, operational decisions and released scientific findings. They can also explain the purpose of an instrument or manoeuvre. They do not automatically provide continuous telemetry, an independent live position solution or a final scientific interpretation immediately after an observation.

That distinction matters most around high-profile dates. A scheduled burn may be completed successfully but still require navigation analysis before ESA publishes the resulting trajectory. Likewise, a first image can be released before researchers finish the shape, geology or impact-physics analysis. Waiting for the agency’s dated confirmation produces a more accurate record than inferring success from a calendar.

Common reader questions

How long will Hera take to reach its destination?

Use ESA’s dated schedule rather than a single fixed travel-time figure. Hera launched on 7 October 2024. On 13 October 2026, ESA’s hub listed rendezvous for November 2026, while operations coverage described braking and arrival activity in October. Those entries represent mission stages, so quote the relevant milestone and its publication date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did BRM-1 or BRM-2 definitely happen?

Not according to the status available on 13 October 2026. ESA had announced BRM-1 for 15 October and BRM-2 for 22 October, with durations of 93 minutes and approximately 31 minutes. Treat both as planned until a later ESA report explicitly confirms execution.

Where is Hera controlled?

Mission control is at ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany. Communications use the Deep Space Antennas at Cebreros, Malargüe and New Norcia. These facilities support operations but do not constitute a public live-position service.

Can I follow Hera through social media?

Yes, for alerts and media. ESA’s Hera page links to @operations.esa.int, @esaoperations and @esa_hera. Follow those links from the hub because ESA’s account presentation can change, and verify important milestones in a dated mission article.

What will Juventas find?

Juventas is intended to use radar to probe Dimorphos’s interior and contribute gravity measurements. Watch for radar returns and internal-structure interpretations, while remembering that those conclusions may require analysis of several observations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What will Milani find?

Milani is intended to study surface composition and dust. A future report may describe a spectral signature or dust observation; that is different from a final statement about the asteroid’s complete bulk composition.

Why is the DART impact important?

DART deliberately struck Dimorphos in September 2022. Hera’s close-up measurements are designed to show the impact site, determine how the binary system changed and improve models used in kinetic-impact planetary defence.

Is the 10% figure a Hera result?

No. ESA’s FAQ presents roughly 10% residual uncertainty in measurements of Dimorphos’s altered orbit as a pre-Hera motivation. It is not a measurement produced by Hera.

Bottom line for following Hera

Use ESA’s Hera mission page as your single starting point, then verify every manoeuvre against the newest dated report. As of 13 October 2026, the 15 October 93-minute BRM-1 burn, the approximately 31-minute 22 October BRM-2 burn and the later October transition manoeuvres were announced plans; the mission page listed rendezvous in November. Follow ESA’s confirmation before treating any of those events as complete. For science, organize updates around the impact site, orbital and gravity measurements, interior structure, composition, dust and autonomous navigation—the measurements that will show what DART changed and how reliably future asteroid deflection can be modelled.
