Track diesel prices and bond yields as two separate planning inputs. Use the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) weekly on-highway diesel series to estimate operating-cost scenarios, then compare it with your invoices and fuel-card records. Use Treasury’s daily par yield curve—or a practical series such as FRED’s DGS10—to frame borrowing-cost scenarios. A Treasury yield is a market reference, not your company’s loan offer, and the available sources do not establish that bond yields forecast diesel prices.
What to track—and what each number means
Your tracker should answer two different questions: “What might fuel cost?” and “What financing conditions should we test?” Combining the series into one forecast can create false precision because they measure different markets, use different frequencies and have different definitions.
| Input | What it measures | Cadence | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| EIA on-highway diesel price | Survey-weighted average retail price paid at sampled outlets, including taxes | Weekly; the observation represents Monday’s prices | Fuel-budget assumptions and regional operating-cost scenarios |
| Treasury par yield curve | Indicative closing-market bid yields for recently auctioned Treasury securities by maturity | Daily business-day observations | Interest-rate and refinancing sensitivity analysis |
| FRED DGS10 | Daily, not-seasonally-adjusted 10-year Treasury constant-maturity yield, expressed as a percent | Daily; data may be revised | A convenient time series for a 10-year market reference |
| Your transaction records | Actual price, gallons, location, vehicle or route and total paid | Every purchase | Actual cost control, variance analysis and budgeting |
The EIA figure is not a quote from your preferred station, wholesale supplier or fleet contract. Treasury’s yield is not the rate a lender must offer your business. Keep both facts visible in the spreadsheet and dashboard labels.

How do I track diesel prices for my business?
Choose the EIA geography that matches your fleet
Start with EIA’s weekly U.S. on-highway diesel price table. It provides dollars-per-gallon figures including taxes for the national market, regions and states. A single-state operator should use the state series when available. A fleet running across several regions should monitor each operating region instead of relying only on the national average.

Geographic matching matters because a national average can hide the price exposure on a particular route. Record the geography as a field—not merely in a chart title—so a later user cannot confuse a Gulf Coast, Midwest or state observation with the national value. If a fleet buys in several areas, calculate a planning benchmark by multiplying each area’s EIA price by expected gallons there, adding those products and dividing by total expected gallons. Keep the underlying regional rows so the weighted result can be audited.
Where can I check weekly diesel prices by state?
Open EIA’s current weekly on-highway diesel table and select the state or region that corresponds to the purchase location. The Petroleum & Other Liquids portal organizes the weekly update and related petroleum tools. Save the represented Monday, the publication date, the selected geography and the displayed units with each observation. A screenshot or downloaded copy can preserve what the team saw, while the source link lets someone verify a later revision or methodology note.
Record the release date and observation date correctly
EIA says the weekly estimate is released at about 5 p.m. each Monday, or Tuesday when Monday is a federal holiday. The release represents prices observed on Monday. Store both the publication date and the represented Monday in your data. Do not label a Monday observation as if it were a Tuesday market close simply because the table appeared on Tuesday after a holiday.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Build the minimum diesel worksheet
- Create one row per weekly EIA observation.
- Add the represented date, release date, geographic area, price in dollars per gallon and source name.
- Add a note field for holidays, methodology changes or unusual operating conditions.
- Keep a second table for each purchase: purchase date, station or supplier location, vehicle or route, gallons, price per gallon, taxes or fees if separately shown, and total cost.
- Calculate a weighted average paid price for each month: total fuel dollars divided by total gallons.
The EIA series identifies broad movement. Your invoices and card records establish what the business actually paid. Use the two side by side to calculate a benchmark variance rather than replacing transaction data with the public average. A useful variance record includes the dollar-per-gallon difference, gallons affected and the resulting dollar impact, so a small price gap on a high-volume route is not overlooked.
Use the benchmark without overstating accuracy
EIA’s estimates are weighted survey estimates. Outlet prices are weighted using sampling and annual sales-volume weights; some nonresponses are imputed. EIA’s methods documentation discusses sampling and nonsampling error, and it withholds some averages when the share of weighted volume based on imputed prices reaches its stated threshold. These characteristics do not make the series unusable, but they do mean a small week-to-week movement should not be treated as a precise quote for every purchase.
Historical comparisons also need care. EIA notes that the June 13, 2022 diesel estimate is not directly comparable with June 6, 2022 because of a methodology change. If a chart crosses that boundary, mark it clearly and avoid attributing the entire step change to market conditions without an adjustment or qualification.

Fuel expense = gallons used × expected purchase price per gallon
Estimate gallons first
Use route plans, historical fueling records, telematics or dispatch projections to estimate gallons for the budget period. Separate vehicle classes or routes when their consumption patterns differ. If a new contract, seasonal route or vehicle replacement will change consumption, put that assumption in the model rather than hiding it in a single blended number.
Create low, base and high price cases
Use the matching EIA regional or state series as a reference for the base case, then document the spread used for low and high cases. The spread is a planning assumption, not a claim that EIA predicts the next price. Apply each case to the same gallon estimate first; then create a separate activity sensitivity if mileage, loads or route counts may change.
| Scenario component | What to enter | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Volume | Expected gallons for the period | Route plan, historical gallons or operational forecast |
| Price | Low, base and high dollars-per-gallon assumptions | Matching EIA geography plus documented management spread |
| Expense | Volume multiplied by price | Recalculate when either assumption changes |
| Actual variance | Actual fuel dollars minus budget fuel dollars | Explain with gallons, location mix or paid-price differences |
Compare actual prices by route and location
At month-end, calculate each route or location’s weighted average paid price and compare it with the corresponding EIA geography. A difference can reflect timing, station mix, taxes, negotiated discounts, card fees or the fact that EIA measures sampled retail outlets rather than your exact purchases. Investigate persistent differences before changing the benchmark assumption. Separate a price variance from a volume variance: paying more per gallon and buying more gallons require different operating responses.

Use the maturity that matches the decision
Treasury’s par yield curve supplies yields by maturity. Select the maturity closest to the period you are planning to finance: a short working-capital facility, a multiyear equipment loan and a longer refinancing plan do not have the same interest-rate exposure. Keep the selected maturity in the model’s label and notes. If the financing term falls between published maturities, retain the two candidate points and explain which one is being used as the planning reference rather than implying an exact match.
Treasury describes the curve as based on closing market bid prices for recently auctioned Treasury securities. Indicative inputs are obtained by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York at approximately 3:30 p.m. each business day. That timing makes the series a daily market reference, not a continuously quoted loan rate.
Translate the reference yield into a financing scenario
A lender generally prices a business loan using a reference rate plus a credit spread, fees, structure and other terms. Model those components separately:

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe formula is a planning framework, not a quote. Use the lender’s actual term sheet when available. If the borrowing plan is not yet defined, test several yield levels while holding the assumed spread visible so a change in market rates is not confused with a change in credit risk or loan structure. Save the principal, maturity, reset features and fee assumptions alongside the selected yield; otherwise a later reviewer cannot reproduce the sensitivity case.
Use DGS10 when a simple daily series is enough
FRED’s DGS10 page provides a convenient daily 10-year constant-maturity Treasury yield sourced from the Federal Reserve Board’s H.15 release. It is not seasonally adjusted, is expressed as a percent and carries a warning that observations may be revised. A 10-year series is useful only when that horizon is relevant to the business decision; it should not automatically stand in for every loan.
For example, the page showed a 5.22% 10-year yield for October 8, 2026, with the page updated October 9, 2026. Treat that as a dated observation, not as a current rate for every borrower or as a forecast of diesel prices. Store the observation date and retrieval date separately so a revised value can be identified.
Can I use Treasury yields to predict diesel prices?
Not on the evidence available here. EIA’s diesel series is a retail-price survey, while Treasury’s curve is a market-yield benchmark derived from securities bids. Their definitions, observation times and market layers differ, and the cited sources do not establish a causal or predictive relationship between them.
You can display both series on a management dashboard to provide operating and financing context, but keep separate charts, units and calculations. Do not feed a yield change directly into the diesel-price formula unless your business has a separately validated forecasting model with documented data and testing. Co-movement on a chart is not validation: test any proposed model out of sample and retain its assumptions, error measures and revision history.
Public benchmarks versus operational tools
Public EIA, Treasury and FRED series answer the market-context question at low cost and with transparent definitions. They do not capture every vehicle, route, supplier discount or card fee. A business fuel card or fleet fuel-management program can add transaction-level records across vehicles, routes and locations, while fleet expense software can consolidate receipts and approvals. Use those tools to improve operational records, not as substitutes for the official benchmark or as evidence that a provider’s displayed price is a national market price.

| Choice | Strength | Limitation to document |
|---|---|---|
| National EIA average | Simple broad trend | May not match the fleet’s geography |
| Regional or state EIA series | Better geographic fit | Still a survey average, not a negotiated quote |
| Invoice or fuel-card data | Actual paid price and gallons | Requires complete, clean transaction records |
| Treasury maturity matched to term | Relevant market-rate context | Excludes the company’s credit spread and loan terms |
Design a repeatable spreadsheet or dashboard
Use one observation table for each series
A practical workbook can contain these columns:
- Diesel table: represented Monday, EIA release date, geography, benchmark dollars per gallon, actual gallons, actual paid dollars per gallon, total fuel cost and operating note.
- Yield table: observation date, source, Treasury maturity, yield percent per annum, publication or update note and financing scenario that uses it.
- Assumptions table: budget period, expected gallons, low/base/high diesel prices, selected yield, assumed spread, fees and review date.
Plot weekly diesel values in one chart and daily yields in a separate chart or table. Label the axes “dollars per gallon” and “percent per annum.” A daily yield point and a weekly diesel average are not synchronized measurements; avoid a combined line that implies they were observed at the same frequency.
Set a review cadence
- When each new EIA release arrives, update the matching regional or state benchmark and check the next budget variance.
- Review daily Treasury observations when a borrowing, renewal or refinancing decision changes.
- At least monthly, summarize gallons, weighted average paid price, total fuel dollars and benchmark variance.
- Re-open assumptions when routes, fuel suppliers, vehicle mix or financing terms change.
Automate only after verifying current documentation
EIA’s petroleum portal organizes weekly updates and other petroleum tools. A data.gov catalog entry describes weekly, monthly and annual petroleum price API data and says an API key is required, but that catalog metadata was last updated August 3, 2015. Use it to identify the API route, then verify the current EIA API documentation, authentication process, field names and release schedule before writing production code.

Using the national average for every route
Problem: A national number can mask the geography where most gallons are purchased.
Correction: Track each major operating region or state and weight the budget by expected gallons in that geography.
Confusing a benchmark with the paid price
Problem: A survey average is treated as a station quote or contract price.
Correction: Preserve invoice and card records, then measure the difference from the benchmark.
Mixing dates and frequencies
Problem: A Tuesday holiday release is interpreted as Tuesday’s price, or a daily yield is compared directly with a weekly diesel observation.
Correction: Store the observation date, release date and cadence as separate fields.
Calling a Treasury yield a loan rate
Problem: The model assumes the company can borrow at the displayed Treasury percentage.
Correction: Add the assumed credit spread, fees and contractual adjustments, and replace assumptions with the lender’s terms when available.

Ignoring revisions and methodology breaks
Problem: Every historical change is attributed to supply, demand or management performance.
Correction: Retain source notes, flag revisions and mark the June 13, 2022 EIA methodology break before calculating long-run changes.
Using co-movement as proof of causation
Problem: Two lines happen to rise together and are used to generate a diesel forecast from yields.
Correction: Keep the inputs separate and use scenario ranges unless a business-specific model has been validated.
A practical monthly review checklist
- Confirm that the latest EIA observation is the correct Monday and geography.
- Refresh gallons and total fuel dollars from invoices or fuel-card records.
- Calculate weighted average paid price and variance from the matching EIA benchmark.
- Review route, supplier, vehicle and location changes that could explain the variance.
- Update the low/base/high fuel scenarios without changing the gallon assumption silently.
- Check the Treasury maturity relevant to any active borrowing or refinancing plan.
- Recalculate financing sensitivity using the yield, assumed spread and fees as separate inputs.
- Check for revised FRED observations or EIA methodology notes before comparing long periods.
- Record the review date and the person who approved changed assumptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I track diesel prices for my business?
Use EIA’s weekly on-highway diesel table for the region or state where you operate, and record your own invoice or fuel-card purchases beside it. Keep the EIA represented Monday and release date in separate fields, then compare your weighted average paid price with the matching benchmark.
How can I forecast fuel costs for my fleet?
Estimate gallons from routes, historical fueling, telematics or dispatch plans. Multiply gallons by low, base and high dollars-per-gallon assumptions based on the matching EIA geography. Review volume and price sensitivities separately.
Where can I check weekly diesel prices by state?
Use EIA’s weekly U.S. on-highway diesel price table and select the applicable state series. The Petroleum & Other Liquids portal links the weekly update and related petroleum tools.
How do bond yields affect business borrowing costs?
A Treasury yield is a market reference. Test the maturity that matches your financing horizon, then add the business’s assumed credit spread, fees and other contractual adjustments. Replace the assumptions with the lender’s term sheet when available.
Can I use Treasury yields to predict diesel prices?
No supported relationship is established by these source definitions. Keep diesel price scenarios based on gallons and fuel-price assumptions, and use Treasury yields only for separate financing sensitivity unless you have a validated business-specific forecasting model.

The Bottom Line
Use EIA’s weekly regional or state diesel benchmark to frame fuel scenarios, but let your own gallons and transaction records determine actual cost. Use a Treasury maturity or FRED DGS10 as separate financing context, add the company’s spread and fees, and never treat a bond yield as a diesel forecast or guaranteed loan rate.
