The most reliable book tracker is a single list with four statuses—want to read, currently reading, read, and did not finish—plus the title, author, and completion date. Start there, then add ratings, notes, tags, progress, or reread dates only if you will actually maintain them. A spreadsheet or paper notebook is enough; a tracking app adds search, imports, progress tools, challenges, and charts.

Build the smallest useful reading record

A tracker should answer two questions quickly: “What have I finished?” and “What should I read next?” Record the same core information for every book so the list remains searchable and easy to update.

Field What to enter Why it helps
Title The book’s title Provides the primary search term.
Author Author or authors Distinguishes books with similar titles and helps you find another work by the same writer.
Edition or ISBN ISBN, publisher, or edition when relevant Separates translations, revised editions, audiobooks, and other versions.
Status Want to read, currently reading, read, or did not finish Shows where each title belongs in your workflow.
Date finished The date you completed it Creates a dependable reading history and makes annual totals possible.
Date started Optional start date Useful when you want to understand reading duration or overlapping books.
Format Print, ebook, audiobook, library loan, or another format Records how you encountered the title and can help with future borrowing.
Rating Your own scale, such as one to five stars Helps you choose similar books later. Define the scale once and use it consistently.
Short note A sentence about what you thought or remembered Preserves context that a rating alone cannot capture.
Progress Page, chapter, percentage, or listening position Useful for books you pause or read in several sessions.
Reread date Optional target date or interval Separates books you plan to revisit from one-time reads.

Do not create every column just because it is available. If you never enter format or ratings, those fields add visual clutter without improving decisions. A title, author, status, and finish date are enough to begin.

Reading-tracker app

An app is useful when you want a searchable catalog, mobile entry, progress updates, reading dates, tags, goals, challenges, or visual summaries. StoryGraph’s help documentation describes read, currently-reading, to-read, owned, and did-not-finish lists, along with progress and challenge tools. Its App Store listing describes charts, annual goals, tags, barcode scanning, and a reading journal. Those are service-described capabilities, not independent performance measurements, and individual features can change by version, device, or plan.

To add a title in StoryGraph, its support material says you can search by title, author, or ISBN, then set the status and dates. ISBN entry is especially helpful when a search returns several translations or editions. Check the result before saving so a paperback, audiobook, and revised edition do not become one accidental record.

Other trackers describe different combinations of features. Bookshelf states that it supports barcode entry, custom shelves, reading sessions, and imports from Goodreads, StoryGraph, or Bookmory. Treat those as the provider’s stated features and confirm the current app interface before relying on a particular workflow.

Goodreads announced a Did Not Finish shelf on March 13, 2026. Its announcement says readers can record progress before setting a book aside and retain reading history when moving a title between shelves. A separate July 14, 2025 announcement says the Want to Read list can appear in Amazon Your Books for customers in the United States who have linked their accounts. That linked-account behavior is not a universal feature for every country or account configuration.

Spreadsheet

A spreadsheet is the best fit when you want flexible columns, straightforward sorting, and a copy you control. Create one sheet called Books, freeze the header row, and turn on filters. A status filter can show only unread titles; sorting the finish-date column gives you a chronological history.

Use one row per edition you actually read. If edition differences do not matter to you, keep one row and put format details in a separate column. Use a consistent date format such as 2026-10-17, and keep status values identical rather than mixing “finished,” “done,” and “read.” Consistency is what makes filtering work.

For a lightweight annual view, filter the status to read, select the finish-date range for the year, and count the visible rows. Avoid treating that count as a competition unless it motivates you; the tracker’s primary job is memory and selection.

Paper reading journal

A paper log works for readers who prefer handwriting or want a device-free ritual. Give each entry a title, author, status, and date finished; leave a few lines for a reaction or quotation reference. Keep the layout quick enough to update immediately after a reading session or when you return a library book.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reading-journal notebook is an optional product category, not a requirement. No particular notebook’s price, quality, or availability is established here. Any notebook with enough space for repeatable entries can serve the purpose.

Set up your tracker in one sitting

Start with the books you already know

  1. Create the list in your chosen app, spreadsheet, or notebook.
  2. Add books you have finished recently, then older books you can identify confidently.
  3. Add titles you genuinely intend to read, not every recommendation you have ever seen.
  4. Assign one of the four core statuses to every new entry.
  5. Enter finish dates for completed books. If you do not know an exact date, leave it blank or record only a month rather than inventing precision.

Use a consistent status workflow

  • Want to read: The title is a future option, not a promise to buy or borrow it.
  • Currently reading: You have started it and expect to return to it.
  • Read: You completed the book; add the finish date at that moment.
  • Did not finish: You deliberately stopped without completing it. Keep the reason in a note if that will prevent you from trying the same title again.

Move a title between statuses instead of creating duplicate rows. This preserves the book’s history and avoids inflating your totals.

Record progress only when it answers a question

Progress is useful when you alternate several books, pause for a long period, or need to resume an audiobook at a precise point. A page number, chapter, percentage, or listening position is sufficient. If progress updates feel like administrative work, use only the status and update it when the status changes.

Capture a note at the right time

Write a short note when you finish, not weeks later. Mention the central idea, a character or argument you want to remember, and whether you would recommend it to your future self. Keep quotations in the format your service or library permits; a personal reminder does not need to become a full review.

Track library loans and annotations separately from your master catalog

Borrowed-book records often contain information that a normal read/to-read list does not: loan dates, bookmarks, highlights, and notes. Libby’s Reading Journey documentation says you can export notes, highlights, bookmarks, and circulation activity for a title as a table or spreadsheet, even after the loan is returned.

That export is useful for preserving annotations and borrowing context. The documentation does not describe it as a complete, universal catalog of every book you have read or want to read. Keep your master status list separately, then attach or copy the library export when a title’s annotations matter.

  1. Open the title’s Reading Journey information in Libby.
  2. Choose the export option for notes and highlights.
  3. Save the resulting table or spreadsheet with a clear filename, such as author-title-libby-2026-10-17.
  4. Back up the file somewhere you control.
  5. Add or update the title in your main tracker, including its status and finish date.

Move your catalog without losing dates or notes

Before changing services, identify what the current service can export and what the destination can import. An export file is not automatically a faithful backup: column names, shelf labels, ratings, dates, and reviews may map differently.

  1. Export first. Download the source file and keep the original untouched.
  2. Inspect the columns. Look for title, author, ISBN, shelves or statuses, dates, ratings, reviews, and notes.
  3. Read the destination template. StoryGraph documents Goodreads imports and says a spreadsheet from another source can be modified to match its import format.
  4. Normalize values. Convert inconsistent statuses and dates before importing. Keep one date format and decide how “to-read,” “currently reading,” and “did not finish” should map.
  5. Import a small test. Use a handful of titles first and verify that status, finish date, rating, and notes landed in the intended fields.
  6. Import the remainder. Retain both the original export and the destination copy until you have checked the result.

Bookshelf states that it reads CSV or spreadsheet exports from Goodreads, StoryGraph, and Bookmory. Confirm the current accepted columns and file limits before preparing a large migration, because provider requirements can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After an import, sample books from different situations: an ordinary finished title, a book with a rating, a currently reading title with progress, a did-not-finish book, and a book with an unusual edition. Compare dates, notes, shelves, and identifiers rather than checking only the total number of rows.

Decide how much tracking is worth the effort

Priority Spreadsheet App Paper journal
Fast initial capture Manual entry; barcode tools are not built in. May offer title, author, ISBN search or barcode scanning, depending on service. Fast for a book already in hand; handwriting is manual.
Search and filtering Strong when columns are consistent. Usually built in, with service-specific filters and shelves. Limited to your index and page layout.
Progress and sessions Possible, but you design the fields. Often supported; StoryGraph and Bookshelf describe progress or sessions. Possible with a custom page, but labor-intensive.
Portability You control the file, but imports may require column changes. Depends on export formats and destination support. Readable without software, but not machine-searchable.
Goals and charts Requires your own formulas or a pivot table. Some services provide annual goals, challenges, charts, or summaries. Requires manual tallies.
Privacy and sharing Stored wherever you save it; sharing is your decision. Review account visibility, social settings, and the service’s current privacy policy. Private unless someone can access the notebook.
Maintenance burden Low if you keep few columns. Can rise with tags, progress, challenges, and social activity. Low for a basic log, higher if you design elaborate spreads.

Choose the format that lowers the friction at the moment you finish or discover a book. A feature-rich app is not an improvement if you stop updating it; a plain spreadsheet is not a compromise if it remains accurate.

Keep the system current without making it a chore

Use a capture rule

When you hear about a book, add it immediately with only title, author, and want-to-read status. Fill in the ISBN, edition, or tags later if you decide to borrow or buy it. This prevents recommendations from becoming untracked scraps of paper or browser tabs.

Use a completion rule

When you finish, change the status first and enter the finish date second. Add a rating or note only if you have something useful to record. The status and date are the durable history; the commentary is optional.

Review the want-to-read list periodically

Every few months, remove titles you no longer want and keep the rest in an order that helps your next choice. A shorter list is easier to use than an archive of every recommendation. If a title has been postponed repeatedly, either schedule it or release it.

Back up digital records

Keep an occasional copy of a spreadsheet or an app export in a location you control. When a service changes its import format, closes a feature, or you switch platforms, the backup is the starting point for recovery. Never overwrite the original export while cleaning a migration file.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use privacy and social features deliberately

Decide what you want other people to see before enabling social settings. Public shelves, reviews, reading challenges, and activity feeds can motivate some readers and pressure others. Check the service’s current privacy controls and account settings rather than assuming a shelf is private.

If you connect accounts, verify the geography and account requirements. The July 2025 announcement about showing a Want to Read list in Amazon Your Books applied to linked accounts for US customers; it should not be treated as a general cross-service synchronization promise.

Troubleshoot common tracking problems

Duplicate editions appear

Compare ISBN, language, publisher, and format. Keep separate entries only when the edition matters to you; otherwise merge your notes into one record and retain the most useful identifier.

  • Spiral Binding for Flexibility: The spiral binding allows the notebook to lay flat or fold back on itself, making it easier to write in different situations, whether at a desk or on the go.

You cannot remember the finish date

Do not invent an exact day. Use the month or year if your system permits it, or leave the field blank and preserve the title and status.

The list has become overwhelming

Archive or delete abandoned recommendations, then keep a small active want-to-read view. A separate “maybe later” tag can preserve possibilities without making them look like immediate plans.

An import loses shelves or notes

Stop editing the destination copy, reopen the original export, and compare the source and destination column mapping. Reformat the file to match the destination template, test with a few rows, and repeat the import only after those fields survive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Logging feels like homework

Reduce the record to title, author, status, and finish date. Add detail only when it helps you choose, remember, or resume a book.

A practical default setup

For most readers, begin with one list containing title, author, status, and finish date. Add format and a short note when they clarify your history. Use a spreadsheet if you want control and portability; use an app if search, scanning, progress, goals, or charts will keep you engaged; use paper if handwriting makes you more likely to record consistently. Preserve library annotations through Libby’s Reading Journey export when needed, and keep an original backup before moving between services.
