You can follow Bitcoin without repeatedly opening a chart: choose the BTC market and currency you care about, create an above- or below-price (or percentage, where available) alert, and allow notifications on both the service and your phone. Use one-time alerts for a single decision point and recurring alerts when you want the same condition monitored repeatedly. The notification is a prompt to check the market—not a trade instruction—and each service may quote a different BTC price.
What a Bitcoin price alert actually does
An alert watches a condition you define and sends a notification when the service says that condition has been met. Typical conditions are a price moving above or below a selected level; some apps also offer percentage or movement alerts. This replaces repeated manual checks with a signal that tells you when to look.
Alerts are not orders. Coinbase states: “Price alerts are only notifications that an asset has reached a certain price. A notification does not guarantee that a trade can be executed at the displayed target, and the available conditions, timing and delivery channels depend on the service and your device settings.

Select the BTC pair and currency
Decide whether you are following a BTC/USD market, BTC/EUR, or another currency offered by the service. A Bitcoin price is not one universal feed: exchanges and tracking services can use different markets, liquidity and calculation methods. Set the alert on the same market you intend to check afterward so the trigger has a clear meaning.

Pick a service you already use
Using an existing exchange or tracking app usually means fewer accounts and fewer notification systems to configure. Choose a service only after confirming that it supports the behavior you need:
- Custom threshold: an explicit amount above or below which you want a notification.
- Percentage or movement condition: useful when you care about a change rather than one fixed price, if the app provides it.
- One-time behavior: the alert fires once and then stops.
- Recurring behavior: the same condition can notify you again, where supported.
Set up a useful alert in six steps
- Open the BTC market. Search for Bitcoin and select the market and currency you actually follow, such as BTC/USD where available.
- Open the alert control. Look for Price alert, Alert, bell or a similar control on the asset page or watchlist.
- Choose the trigger. Enter an above or below price, or select a percentage/movement option if the service offers one.
- Choose how often it can fire. Select one-time when you need a single prompt; select recurring only when repeated notifications are useful for your plan.
- Enable delivery. Select push, in-app or email where offered, then allow notifications in the phone’s operating-system settings as well as inside the app.
- Review the alert later. Keep a small number of meaningful alerts active. Check that the market, currency, threshold and expiration behavior still match what you want.
Set the threshold far enough from the current quote to prompt a useful check-in rather than a stream of minor notifications. There is no universally appropriate Bitcoin level; the right number depends on the decision you want the alert to trigger.
Decide what kind of trigger you really need
A fixed-price alert answers, “Has BTC reached this amount?” It is straightforward when you have a specific level to investigate. A percentage alert answers, “Has BTC moved by this amount?” That can be more useful when the price changes substantially over time and you do not want to keep editing an absolute number. Not every service offers both choices, so confirm the control before building your routine.

For example, an above alert and a below alert on the same pair are separate rules, not one two-sided instruction. If your purpose is simply to review your portfolio after a large move, a movement condition may fit better than several closely spaced price levels. If you have one specific level to examine, a one-time threshold is less likely to keep prompting you after the check is complete.
How to create alerts in supported services
Coinbase mobile app
Coinbase documents custom above/below target alerts as well as predetermined price alerts in its mobile app. The asset must be on your watchlist for its price alerts to send.
- Add Bitcoin to your watchlist.
- Open the BTC asset and choose the option to create a custom price alert, or select one of the predetermined alerts shown by the app.
- Set the above or below target and select the notification choices available to you, such as push, in-app or email.
- Save the alert, then confirm that notifications are allowed for the Coinbase app in your device settings.

CoinGecko mobile app
CoinGecko’s tutorial says an account is required to create app alerts and documents both one-time and recurring choices. Its support documentation also describes automatic alerts after you search for and select a coin, provided the feature is available and device notifications are enabled.
- Sign in or create a CoinGecko account.
- Search for Bitcoin and open the coin page.
- Use the price-alert control to enter your target and choose whether the alert is one-time or recurring, when those choices are shown.
- For automatic alerts, follow the app’s prompt after selecting Bitcoin and allow notifications at the device level.
- Check the alert list so you know which subscriptions are active.
CoinGecko’s support page says automatic alert subscriptions expire after 45 days. That expiration applies to the documented automatic-alert behavior, not necessarily every custom alert type, so check the label and renewal behavior in the app. Instructions and defaults can change. CoinGecko on the web
The web interface lets you choose a custom price amount or a percentage choice on a coin page.
- Open Bitcoin’s page on CoinGecko and select the alert control.
- Choose whether to enter a price amount or percentage condition.
- Enter the threshold and save it.
- Allow the browser or account notification channel requested by the site.
CoinGecko’s support instructions say a notification arrives once the price reaches the chosen level. Review the current steps at CoinGecko’s web-alert support page.
Kraken Pro on web or mobile
Kraken documents market alerts in Kraken Pro, with selected trigger parameters and a price level on web and mobile.
- Open the market-alert tool in Kraken Pro and select the BTC market you want to monitor.
- Choose the trigger parameters and enter the price level.
- Save the alert.
- On mobile, enable push notifications in the device settings and in the Kraken Pro app; both levels are required for push delivery.
The Kraken support article was last updated January 20, 2026. Because app screens and notification controls can change, compare the current interface with Kraken Support’s price-alert instructions before relying on a particular menu name.

Design alerts that reduce checking instead of creating more noise
Use thresholds tied to a decision
Before entering a number, finish the sentence: “When Bitcoin reaches this condition, I will check the market and decide whether to do something.” If you cannot name the follow-up check, the alert may be too narrow to be useful. A threshold can mark a level for research, a portfolio review or a planned conversation; it does not determine what action is suitable.
Separate one-time, recurring and automatic alerts
- One-time: best for a single level you want to notice once. After it fires, verify whether the service disables it.
- Recurring: keeps monitoring the same rule and may notify you repeatedly. Use it only when repeated prompts are intentional.
- Automatic movement alert: a service-defined subscription that may use its own movement logic and lifetime. CoinGecko’s documented automatic subscriptions expire after 45 days.
Do not treat these as interchangeable. A custom threshold you set yourself and an automatic movement subscription can have different triggers, expiration rules and notification frequency.
Keep the alert set small
Several tightly spaced levels can all trigger during one volatile move, producing repeated prompts without adding information. Start with the few conditions that would change what you check. Review and remove stale alerts rather than adding another alert each time your plan changes.

Make sure notifications can reach you
Check both permission layers
Many services have an in-app notification switch, while iOS, Android or a desktop browser has a separate permission. Turn on the channel in both places. Kraken explicitly requires device and Kraken Pro permissions for mobile push. CoinGecko’s automatic-alert documentation likewise calls for device notifications.
- Confirm the app or browser is allowed to send notifications.
- Check Focus, Do Not Disturb, battery-saver and background-activity restrictions.
- Verify that the selected email address is current if you use email delivery.
- Open the service after saving to confirm the alert appears in the active-alert list.
If an alert never appears
- Reopen the alert and verify the BTC market, currency, direction and numeric threshold.
- Check whether a one-time alert already fired or an automatic subscription reached its expiration.
- Confirm in-app and operating-system permissions again.
- Check whether the app is signed in to the account where the alert was created.
- Look for an in-app history or email record before creating a duplicate.
These checks identify configuration problems; they do not establish that delivery is instantaneous or uninterrupted. The documented features do not provide a universal delivery-time guarantee.
Test the setup before relying on it
After saving an alert, inspect its active-status screen and verify every field. Confirm that “above” was not selected when you meant “below,” that the currency symbol is correct, and that a recurring rule is not enabled accidentally. If the service offers a predetermined alert alongside a custom one, identify which rule you are reviewing so you do not later mistake one for the other.

Make a harmless test of the notification path when the app allows it, or review the service’s notification history and account email after a trigger. A test can show that permissions are working, but it cannot prove that every future notification will arrive on time. Keep the service’s app updated and revisit permissions after operating-system or app updates.
Understand the limits of an alert
The displayed price can differ between services
Coinbase, CoinGecko and Kraken Pro may reference different markets or calculations. If you set an alert in one service and inspect a chart in another, the values may not match exactly. Compare the same pair and currency when deciding whether the condition was reached.
An alert is not execution or investment advice
A notification does not reserve a price, submit an order or ensure that an order will fill. It also does not say whether buying, selling or doing nothing is appropriate. Use it as a reminder to inspect the relevant market, your own plan and any applicable fees or limits.
Availability can vary
App versions, account status, geography, notification choices and partner terms can change. A control shown in a help article may be labeled differently in your current version. Recheck the service’s settings when you create or renew an alert, especially after an app update.

The practical choice is the service that already contains the market you intend to check and offers the trigger frequency you can manage. Set it once, test the permissions, and let the alert tell you when a deliberate check is warranted.
