For a daily view of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF activity, start with Farside Investors’ Bitcoin ETF flow table. It reports amounts in U.S. dollars, in millions, and compiles daily figures by fund and in aggregate. Check its coverage, date, update time, and any revision notes before treating the latest total as final. A positive net flow means reported creations exceeded redemptions for the covered funds and period; a negative figure means redemptions exceeded creations. Neither number, on its own, tells you where Bitcoin’s price is headed.
Where to check Bitcoin ETF flows
Use a tracker that clearly states which funds it covers and how it sources and updates its figures. Farside’s daily table is a secondary compilation of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flows, with values shown in U.S. millions. It is a practical place to see the daily figures together, but it is not a consolidated report published by the funds themselves.
Before comparing or quoting a number, check these details on the tracker:
- Product universe: Confirm that the figures cover U.S.-listed spot products. Do not combine those figures with futures ETFs or funds listed outside the United States unless the tracker explicitly includes them and labels the broader universe.
- Fund coverage: Check which tickers are included. A live roster can change as products launch, close, or become included in the compilation.
- Unit and scope: Farside labels amounts in U.S. millions. Check whether you are reading a particular fund’s figure or the aggregate before adding rows or comparing totals.
- Date and update status: Make sure the figure corresponds to the intended reporting date. Data can appear after the U.S. close and may be revised as disclosures arrive. If you cite a latest-session total, note the page’s displayed date and time and whether it is provisional or revised.
- Source and revisions: A tracker compiles data from other sources; its sourcing and revision practices matter. For additional context on coverage and price interpretation, see The Commoner’s Bitcoin ETF flow tracker notes.
Daily flow values are volatile and time-sensitive. A total seen early in the update cycle may differ from a later version, so avoid presenting it as a final figure without checking the page again.

What a positive or negative flow means
A net flow is the reported difference between creations and redemptions over a stated period for a stated set of funds. A positive number means creations exceeded redemptions; a negative number means redemptions exceeded creations. The interpretation applies only to the tracker’s covered products and reporting window.
Positive: net creations
For a cash-created product such as the iShares Bitcoin Trust, creation orders are associated with cash-to-Bitcoin transactions described in its SEC annual report. A positive flow therefore indicates net creation activity at the fund level, not that every reported dollar represents a direct purchase of Bitcoin on a public exchange at that moment.
Rank #2
Negative: net redemptions
A negative flow indicates more reported redemptions than creations during the period. The iShares trust’s filing describes redemption transactions involving Bitcoin converted to cash, but a fund-level outflow does not prove that every shareholder sold or that every redemption causes an immediate public-exchange Bitcoin sale. Counterparties, settlement, and timing affect how transactions occur. Product mechanics can differ, so check the current filing for the fund you are examining.

ETF flow figures reflect activity in fund shares, rather than a simple count of all investor trades. In its description of the iShares Bitcoin Trust, the issuer explains cash-to-Bitcoin transactions associated with purchase orders and Bitcoin-to-cash transactions associated with redemption orders. Its SEC annual report and SEC prospectus amendment describe that trust’s structure; they should not be taken as proof that every Bitcoin fund uses identical procedures.
Rank #3
For the iShares trust, the issuer’s product information and fact sheet provide additional product details. The fact sheet says only registered broker-dealers that become authorized participants by entering into a contract with the sponsor and trustee may purchase or redeem baskets. This is a fund-specific description, not a claim that ETF flow totals identify the end investors behind the activity.
Flows are not NAV, assets under management, or price performance
Flow, net asset value (NAV), assets under management (AUM), and market price answer different questions:
Rank #4
- Flow records net creations and redemptions over a reporting period.
- NAV values a fund’s assets, less liabilities, under its stated calculation method.
- AUM describes the value of assets under management and can change as the underlying Bitcoin price moves.
- Bitcoin price performance reflects trading across the broader market, not only ETF activity.
Because market value changes, AUM can rise even without net creations, or rise on a day when a fund has net redemptions. For the iShares trust, BlackRock says the administrator calculates NAV each business day after 4 p.m. ET, typically releases it after review by 5:30 p.m. ET, and generally no later than 8 p.m. ET. That schedule applies to this issuer’s stated process; check other funds’ current documentation for their calculation and publication details.

Do ETF inflows make Bitcoin go up?
Inflows can be one indicator of demand for ETF shares and, for cash-created products, are associated with fund activity that can involve acquiring Bitcoin. But a flow figure is not a direct price signal and cannot establish that ETF activity caused a Bitcoin move. Price formation also involves exchanges, miners, and holders outside the funds, as The Commoner’s tracker notes. To support a claim about causation, you would need evidence beyond observing flows and price changes at the same time.

Likewise, a flow report does not reveal who the end investors are. It does not establish that a particular institution, investor category, or person bought or sold. Calling a flow “institutional buying” requires separate evidence about investor identity.

Comparisons are meaningful only when the underlying definitions match. Check these dimensions before treating two figures as equivalent:
- Geography and product type: U.S. spot funds, global products, and futures ETFs are different universes.
- Fund coverage: Confirm the tickers included in each total.
- Unit and valuation basis: Distinguish U.S. dollars, U.S. millions, and Bitcoin-denominated values.
- Period and timestamp: Align the reporting date and note whether a number is early, provisional, or revised.
- Source chain: An issuer disclosure, issuer data page, and third-party compilation are not interchangeable sources.
- Revision policy: Check whether later disclosures can change earlier daily figures.
When comparing a fund’s activity over time, keep its creations and redemptions separate from NAV, AUM, and price performance. If an issuer changes its basket method or disclosure, consult that fund’s current filings rather than assuming the change applies across the market.
