Track AI API costs in each provider’s usage dashboard, then compare those totals with your application logs and billing records. To limit overspending, distinguish notification alerts from controls that can block requests: an alert alone may not stop usage, and a hard limit can interrupt production traffic. The available reports, permissions, billing models, and enforcement behavior differ by provider.
How do I track AI API usage?
Start with the account or organization that actually pays the bill, then review the provider’s usage or cost report for a complete billing period. Dashboards show provider-recorded usage; your application logs can identify which feature, customer, or workflow generated it. Neither view automatically answers every question the other can.
OpenAI API
OpenAI’s Usage Dashboard can show current and past billing periods. Access requires organization-owner status or Usage Dashboard permission, and dashboard data is displayed in UTC. The project selector in the dashboard is independent of the project selected elsewhere in the API Platform, so check that you are viewing the intended project. OpenAI also supports dashboard exports for broader analysis and exposes usage information in individual API responses; response-level fields depend on the endpoint, so do not assume every API response reports usage in the same format. Google Gemini API
Google directs users to Google AI Studio > Dashboard > Usage to monitor Gemini API usage. Billing plans and account rollout status can vary, so check the billing page for the account you use rather than assuming its setup matches another account. Google says linked projects inherit a billing account’s usage tier and associated rate limits and account caps; those are Google account and project mechanics, not a universal spending cap across AI providers. Anthropic Claude API
Anthropic’s Console reporting article describes cost and usage reporting that includes a daily cost chart. It identifies Developer, Billing, and Admin roles as able to view the report. How do I set a spending limit for API usage?
First decide whether you need an early warning or want requests to stop when a threshold is reached. Then choose the narrowest scope that matches your billing and operational ownership: an organization-wide limit, a project limit, or application-level tracking. Do not treat a provider’s alert, rate limit, approved usage limit, or prepaid balance as interchangeable with a configured spend limit.

Configure OpenAI alerts and hard limits
OpenAI documents monthly spend limits at organization and project level. A person needs permission to manage the relevant settings. Use Organization limits for an organization-wide setting, or Project settings > Limits for a project setting. Spend alerts notify you while API traffic continues; adding a hard limit does not disable those alerts, so you can set an alert threshold below the point where you expect requests to be blocked. OpenAI distinguishes these configured spend limits from the separate monthly usage limit approved for an organization. When a request fails, inspect the error details and account state to determine whether the cause is a configured spend limit, the approved usage limit, or exhausted prepaid credits.

Check Google’s billing plan for the account
Google says its Gemini API Prepay and Postpay billing plans start taking effect March 23, 2026. Assignment and transition may depend on account age and rollout status, so review the billing page for each account before making assumptions about when charges occur or which controls apply. The billing documentation does not establish a provider-neutral hard spending cap.
Will a budget alert stop API requests?
No: an alert is a notification, not an enforcement control. OpenAI explicitly says spend alerts do not stop API traffic. If your provider offers a hard limit, that is a different setting and can cause requests to fail when tracked spend reaches the applicable threshold.

OpenAI warns that “Hard spend limits can interrupt production traffic.” It also says, “Enforcement is not instantaneous, so recorded spend can slightly exceed the configured amount.” As a result, the configured amount is not a guaranteed exact billing ceiling. Plan for the possibility of both a small overrun and failed requests, and keep an alert threshold early enough to investigate before traffic is interrupted.
How can I see API costs by project or feature?
Use the provider’s project-level reporting where available, but add attribution in your own application when you need detail the provider report does not offer. Record usage against internal identifiers such as project, feature, or customer where lawful and appropriate. Then compare those records with provider reports, exports, and invoices. Request-level token or usage data helps explain individual calls; aggregate billing reports help reconcile what the provider records over a period.

For OpenAI, verify the dashboard’s project selector directly: it is independent of the API Platform’s other project selection. In all providers, align the reporting period and time zone before investigating a mismatch; OpenAI’s Usage Dashboard uses UTC.
How should I roll out spending controls safely?
- Map billing ownership. Identify the provider accounts, organizations, projects, billing owners, and applications that generate traffic.
- Establish a baseline. Review usage and costs across an appropriate billing period in each provider’s reporting page. Confirm the account, project, date range, and reporting time basis.
- Add application attribution. Log the internal project, feature, or customer associated with usage when provider reporting alone cannot answer who or what drove the cost.
- Set notification thresholds. Choose a point that leaves time to investigate and respond before a business-critical threshold is reached.
- Evaluate hard enforcement. Decide which requests could fail, how the application will handle those failures, and who needs to be notified. Do not enable a hard limit without accounting for the impact on production traffic.
- Reconcile records. Compare provider reports with application logs and invoices or cost exports, using matching billing periods and time zones.
- Review after changes. Revisit thresholds when workload, model mix, billing plan, or account limits change.
Why did my API request fail after I set a limit?
A request may fail because tracked spend reached a configured hard limit, but other account controls can produce similar symptoms. OpenAI documents billing-related 429 errors for requests affected by a hard spend limit; it also notes that enforcement can take time to propagate. Check the error code and the relevant organization or project setting, then verify whether the account instead reached its separate approved monthly usage limit or ran out of prepaid credits. Rate limits are another distinct control and should not be mistaken for a spending threshold.
If a hard limit is affecting production, have an authorized owner review the applicable organization or project limit and the account’s billing state. Treat the failure as an operational incident if the affected requests are business-critical; an alert alone cannot restore blocked traffic.
