Use three layers instead of looking for one all-purpose Xbox backlog: put games you may buy or try in the Xbox wishlist, use the Windows Xbox app to find installed PC games and recent activity, and keep a small personal list for statuses such as playing, paused, finished, or dropped. Xbox’s documented features do not establish one universal tracker that combines every game you want, own, install, subscribe to, and complete.
What each Xbox feature can—and cannot—track
A backlog normally contains more than one kind of game. Some titles are only candidates, some are already installed, some are available through a subscription, and others are half-finished. Treating all of those as one category makes the list harder to use. Assign each job to the tool that actually supports it.

The practical result is a two-part system: Xbox handles discovery and reminders, while your own list handles decisions and progress. You do not need to copy every game into every tool.
1. Put games you might play later in the Xbox wishlist
The wishlist is the right capture point for games you are considering. Xbox announced on August 5, 2026 that wishlists can contain up to 1,000 games and that the expanded capacity is available to all Xbox players. Xbox describes the feature as a way to keep track of games you want to play, follow, and pick up later.

What belongs on the wishlist
- Games you may buy in the future.
- Games you want to monitor before deciding whether to play them.
- Titles you are interested in but do not currently own or have installed.
- Games you want to remember for a sale, a release, or a future change in availability.
What to keep out of it
- Every game you already own, simply because it is in your account.
- Games you have finished, unless you genuinely want to revisit them.
- Games you tried and deliberately abandoned.
- A large collection of Game Pass games that you might play someday but cannot access permanently.
Separating purchase or discovery intent from ownership keeps the wishlist meaningful. When it becomes a list of everything you have ever noticed, it stops helping you choose.
A simple wishlist maintenance routine
- When a game catches your attention, add it to the Xbox wishlist rather than relying on memory.
- When you decide to buy or install it, move the decision into your personal tracker and leave the wishlist entry only if you still want price or availability reminders.
- During a monthly or quarterly review, remove games that no longer fit your interests.
- Keep your personal status—playing, paused, finished, or dropped—outside the wishlist so the wishlist remains a candidate list.
2. Use the Windows Xbox app to locate installed PC games
Xbox’s September 15, 2025 announcement says the Windows Xbox app’s aggregated library displays installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other supported PC storefronts in My Library. Installed games from supported storefronts also appear in Most Recent. This is useful when games are spread across launchers, but it is not evidence of a complete list of every PC game you own or every title you want to play.
Make the library show the storefronts you use
- Open the Xbox app on Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Library & Extensions.
- Adjust storefront visibility so the supported sources you use are included.
- Return to My Library and check that installed titles from those sources are visible.
The exact games shown depend on storefront support and installation state. A game that is owned but uninstalled, hidden by your settings, or outside the supported integrations may not appear in this aggregated view. Do not treat an absent title as proof that you do not own it.

Use Most Recent as a resume queue
Most Recent and the related Jump back in play-history experience are designed to bring recent activity back to the surface on console, PC, and handheld. They are excellent for answering “What was I playing?” and poor substitutes for “What is my entire backlog?” A game can disappear from a recent-activity view simply because you have not opened it lately, while an untouched game may never be listed there at all.
3. Build a personal backlog list with only useful fields
A separate spreadsheet, notes app, or list is the part that can cover all of your states in one place. This is a workflow recommendation, not an Xbox account feature. Start with fields that help you make the next decision; add detail only when it changes what you play.

Do not add ratings, dozens of tags, or detailed completion percentages unless you will maintain them. A compact list that is current is more useful than a sophisticated one that you stop updating.
4. Use statuses that describe a decision, not just ownership
To play
You have decided the game is a realistic candidate, but you are not playing it now. This status should be smaller than your wishlist. If every interesting game qualifies, none is a near-term choice.
Playing
Limit this to one to three games. A small active set reduces context switching and makes your next session obvious. The limit is practical advice, not a platform restriction.
Paused
Use this when you intend to return but are temporarily stopping. Add a short note such as “resume after co-op weekend” or “restart tutorial.” Without a next action, paused can become a permanent holding area.
Finished
Mark the game finished when you have reached your own stopping point. That might be the main story, the credits, or the amount of content you intended to play. You do not need to force one definition of completion onto every genre.

Dropped
Dropping a game is a valid outcome. Move it out of the active queue and record a brief reason only if that will prevent you from reconsidering it later. A backlog should reduce guilt, not create an obligation to consume everything you have access to.

Record a Game Pass title’s access source explicitly. A subscription catalogue is not the same as permanent ownership, so a game should not silently remain in your backlog as though you can play it indefinitely. Useful values are Game Pass—available, Game Pass—leaving soon, and owned, provided you update them when your access changes.
A February 2024 Xbox Wire article described PC game hubs that could show last played, total playtime, achievement summaries, Game Pass departure notifications, and other details. That article described an Insider rollout and availability to only a subset of PC app players; it does not establish that every player has those features today. If your app shows a departure notice, move that title to the top of your decision queue. If it does not, do not assume the absence of a notice means the game is permanent.
Make a Game Pass decision quickly
- When you add a subscription title, label the access source as Game Pass.
- Choose one next action: start it soon, install it now, buy it if you want permanent access, or leave it for later.
- If it is announced as leaving, either make it an active game, remove it, or change the plan to purchase it.
- When access ends, update the row instead of leaving a misleading “to play” entry.
6. A repeatable Xbox backlog workflow
Capture
Add possible future plays to the Xbox wishlist. Add a row to your personal list only when you can state why the game is a realistic candidate or when you already have access to it.
Qualify
Fill in platform and access source. This immediately exposes games that require a purchase, a subscription, a particular console, or a PC installation.

Choose
Mark one to three titles as playing. For each one, write a next action that can be completed in a session: install it, finish a mission, continue the campaign, or invite a co-op partner.
Review
Use My Library and Most Recent in the Windows Xbox app to rediscover installed games and recent activity. Compare those reminders with your personal list rather than assuming either view is complete.
Prune
At a regular interval, move finished and dropped games out of the active views. Remove wishlist entries that no longer interest you. Keep historical records only when they help you avoid a repeated purchase or remember what you enjoyed.

- Wishlist: access is Wishlist or Considering; this view can mirror the Xbox wishlist without duplicating every detail.
- Needs a decision: Game Pass access is temporary, a title is paused without a next action, or a game is installed but never started.
- Completed history: status is Finished or Dropped, kept out of the active queue.
Sort the Next up view by a decision you can act on, such as a short session, a friend’s availability, or an approaching access change. Sorting alphabetically is easy but rarely helps you decide what to play tonight.

8. Common backlog problems and fixes
“My Xbox library does not show everything I own.”
Check whether you are looking at the aggregated Windows PC library, which focuses on installed games from supported storefronts. Review Settings > Library & Extensions, confirm the relevant storefront visibility, and check whether the game is installed. Keep ownership and wishlist records in your personal list because the aggregated view is not documented as a complete uninstalled-game inventory.
“Most Recent is showing old games, not my backlog.”
That is expected. Recent-play history is a resume aid, not a backlog database. Use it to recover a game you were already playing, then rely on your status list for games you have not opened recently.
“My backlog is too large to use.”
Separate candidates from commitments. Keep broad interest in the Xbox wishlist, restrict the personal To play view to realistic options, and allow yourself to mark games Dropped. A 1,000-game wishlist limit announced by Xbox in August 2026 is room for capture, not a target for completion.
“I keep forgetting where a game came from.”
Add the access-source field and update it when a Game Pass title becomes owned, leaves the catalogue, or is removed from consideration. This prevents subscription access from being mistaken for permanent ownership.
“I want to use Play Later.”
Xbox announced a Game Pass Play Later discovery list in September 2021. That announcement is historical and does not prove the list remains available. Look for the feature in the current app before building your process around it. If it is absent, use the wishlist and your personal list instead.

A five-minute weekly review
- Open your personal Playing view and remove anything you are no longer pursuing.
- Check the Xbox app’s Most Recent or Jump back in area for a game you intended to resume.
- Look at My Library for installed games that are not represented in your list.
- Check Game Pass access and act on any departure information shown in your available game hubs.
- Choose the next session for each active game, then move one or more candidates to Dropped if they no longer deserve space.
This routine keeps the Xbox wishlist broad, the active queue small, and the personal tracker accurate without pretending that any one Xbox screen is a complete backlog.
