Track a hurricane from the live National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisory, not from a reposted screenshot. Open the current storm map, verify its advisory number and timestamp, then read the forecast cone, center-position dots, intensity labels, watches and warnings as separate pieces of information. For decisions at a particular address, add local National Weather Service and emergency-management instructions plus NHC wind, arrival-time, rainfall and other hazard products.

Start with the live official advisory

The NHC is the authoritative starting point for Atlantic, Eastern and Central North Pacific tropical cyclones. Its storm pages bring together the public advisory, forecast discussion, forecast graphics, interactive cone and warning maps, wind-probability information and related products. Select the active disturbance or named storm, then check the product’s advisory number and issue time before interpreting any map.

A hurricane forecast is a changing operational product. A map saved six hours ago can show a previous center position, forecast track, intensity estimate or warning area. During an active storm, refresh the live page and read the newest advisory. If a warning is issued between routine advisories, the NHC can publish an intermediate or special graphic, so do not assume the regular schedule is the only time information changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a broad storm overview: use the current NHC public advisory and forecast discussion.
  • For the projected center path: use the forecast-track map and cone.
  • For alert status: read the watch and warning overlays and their legend.
  • For a location-specific decision: check local National Weather Service forecasts, emergency-management messages and evacuation instructions.

The NHC also publishes GIS data for people who need to load forecast tracks, cones, warning areas or wind fields into mapping software. Availability and fields can change, and the GIS products are more technical than the standard graphics. Most households should use the ordinary NHC maps and local alerts.

How often hurricane maps update

Atlantic graphics are normally issued every six hours at 5 a.m., 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, or the corresponding Eastern Standard Time schedule when applicable. Eastern Pacific and Central Pacific products follow different basin-specific schedules. These are normal release times, not guarantees that no update will occur between them. Intermediate advisories and special graphics can appear whenever warnings change or a cyclone changes significantly.

Always use the timestamp printed on the live product rather than converting a remembered schedule. The timestamp tells you which observation and forecast cycle the map represents. When comparing two maps, compare their issue times first; otherwise you may mistake a routine forecast adjustment for a disagreement between products.

Reading the NHC forecast map

Current storm marker

The current marker shows the estimated center of the tropical cyclone at the advisory time. It is a position estimate, not a photograph of the whole circulation and not the location of every dangerous condition. A broad storm can produce damaging weather far from that point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forecast-position dots

Dots or symbols ahead of the current marker indicate predicted center positions at labeled forecast times. Read the time label attached to each dot, then follow the sequence in order. The dots describe the center’s expected location; they do not draw the complete area of wind, rain, surge, tornadoes or flooding that may occur around it.

Intensity abbreviations

NHC graphics use abbreviated intensity labels:

Label Meaning
D Tropical depression
S Tropical storm
H Hurricane
M Major hurricane

Use the legend and accompanying advisory for the applicable wind-speed thresholds and units. An intensity category describes the cyclone’s forecast strength under the NHC classification; it is not a statement that every place near the storm will experience that category’s winds.

What the forecast cone means—and what it does not

The cone represents uncertainty in the forecast center track. NHC constructs it from circles around the forecast center positions. The radius at each forecast lead time is based on historical errors in official forecasts, so the cone generally widens farther into the future.

It is not a picture of the hurricane’s size, wind field or rain shield. It does not show every community that could receive hazardous weather, and it is not a probability map for a specific town. A location outside the cone can still experience tropical-storm-force winds, hurricane-force winds, storm surge, flooding, tornadoes or heavy rain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The NHC describes the limitation this way: “It is important to remember that tropical cyclones are not a point. Their effects can span many hundreds of miles from the center.” Use that principle whenever you are tempted to treat the centerline as the edge of danger.

How much confidence does the cone provide?

Historical data indicate that the entire five-day path of the storm center remains inside the cone about 60–70% of the time. That statistic concerns the full forecast path of the center, not the chance that a particular community will experience hurricane conditions. It also does not mean the storm is equally likely to be anywhere inside the cone.

Why 2026 cone widths differ by basin

For the 2026 Atlantic and Eastern/Central North Pacific products, NHC calculated cone radii from official forecast errors during 2021–2025. At a 120-hour (five-day) lead time, the 2026 Atlantic radius is 200 nautical miles, while the Eastern and Central Pacific radius is 138 nautical miles. These are geometric radii used to construct the center-track cone; they are not forecasts of storm diameter, wind extent or local-impact probability. NHC can recalculate the values in later years, so do not treat these numbers as permanent constants.

Separate the center track from the hazards

After checking the cone, open the other NHC graphics that answer the question you actually need to solve. A center-track map answers “Where might the center go?” It cannot answer all of the following:

Question Product to consult What to look for
How uncertain is the projected center path? Forecast cone and forecast-position map Current marker, labeled future positions, cone width and issue time
Is my area under an official alert? Watch and warning overlay The map legend, alert type, covered coastline or locations and expiration or update time
What is the likelihood of strong winds here? Wind-probability products Probability thresholds, wind category, valid period and location
How far can the strongest winds extend? Wind-field graphic Forecast wind radii by direction and threshold
When could tropical-storm-force winds begin? Arrival-time product Expected onset window and the uncertainty around it
Could rain, surge or flooding affect me? NHC hazard graphics plus local forecasts Rainfall, surge, flood and local-impact statements for your area

Do not compare a cone with a storm-size or wind-field map as though both depict the same boundary. The cone is about track uncertainty; the wind field is about the forecast reach of winds; a warning overlay is about an official alert area. A single storm can have a relatively narrow center cone and a very large area of hazardous weather.

Understanding watches and warnings

Read the overlay and its legend

Watch and warning areas appear as overlays on the NHC map. Their colors and line styles are defined by the legend on that specific graphic. Use the legend rather than inferring alert status from how close your community appears to the centerline. A warning area can extend well outside the cone, and an area near the cone may not be under the same alert.

Know what an alert changes

An alert means you should follow the detailed NHC advisory and your local emergency-management instructions for the hazard named in the product. It does not provide a complete personal forecast. Check whether your location is covered, which hazard the alert addresses, the valid time and any local evacuation or shelter direction. Local authorities may issue instructions that are more specific than the broad national map.

A practical hurricane-tracking routine

  1. Open the current NHC storm page. Select the active cyclone or disturbance and avoid relying on an image shared without an issue time.
  2. Confirm the advisory number and timestamp. Note the basin and the next expected update. If the page indicates an intermediate or special advisory, use that product.
  3. Locate the current center marker. Read the accompanying position, motion and intensity information; remember that the marker is only the center estimate.
  4. Follow the labeled forecast dots. Identify the predicted center at 12, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours when those labels are present, and observe how the track changes over time.
  5. Read the cone as uncertainty. Do not use its edge as a storm boundary or its centerline as a guaranteed route.
  6. Check watches and warnings separately. Use the map legend and the written advisory to determine whether your location is covered.
  7. Open hazard-specific products. Review wind probabilities, wind-field extent and arrival-time information; add rainfall, surge and other available graphics relevant to your area.
  8. Switch to local guidance for action. Read National Weather Service forecasts and emergency-management instructions, especially for evacuation, sheltering, flooding and transportation decisions.
  9. Refresh after each advisory. Record the new issue time if you are coordinating a household or workplace plan, because the forecast and alert areas can change.

How to interpret forecast changes

A shifted track

If a later forecast moves the center track east or west, compare the new advisory time and the previous forecast lead time. A five-day forecast from one cycle is not directly equivalent to a 72-hour forecast from another. Even when the center path shifts, the hazardous wind or rainfall area may still overlap your location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A changed intensity label

A change from depression to tropical storm, or from hurricane to major hurricane, describes the forecast classification at the labeled point. It does not instantly define local conditions across the entire map. Read the wind radii, probabilities and local statements that accompany the category.

A widening or narrowing cone

Cone width reflects the historical-error method and forecast lead time. A narrower cone is not a promise of low impact, and a wider cone is not a forecast that the storm will become larger. Use hazard-specific products for the physical reach of winds and other threats.

Common tracking mistakes

  • Using an old screenshot: Check the advisory number and timestamp on every image.
  • Treating the cone as the danger zone: Open wind, arrival-time, rainfall, surge and local-impact products.
  • Following only the centerline: The center is one forecast path among many possibilities and is not the edge of hazardous conditions.
  • Assuming outside-the-cone means safe: Impacts can extend many hundreds of miles from the center, and tropical-storm- or hurricane-force winds can extend beyond the cone.
  • Ignoring the legend: Watch and warning colors vary by product; read the legend printed on the current map.
  • Comparing different basins without context: Atlantic, Eastern Pacific and Central Pacific products use their own schedules, and 2026 cone radii differ between the Atlantic and Pacific.
  • Relying on a national map for a local decision: Follow local emergency-management and National Weather Service instructions for evacuation, sheltering and road conditions.

Using NHC GIS data

GIS users can obtain NHC data for forecast tracks, cone geometry, warning areas and wind fields and combine those layers with local boundaries, roads or critical facilities. Check the portal’s current availability and metadata before automating a workflow because data fields and availability are subject to change.

For a household decision, GIS is usually unnecessary. The standard NHC graphics already show the current center, forecast positions, cone and alert overlays in a form designed for rapid public use. Use GIS when you need repeatable analysis, a custom map or integration with an emergency-management system, and retain the advisory time with every exported layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Receiving alerts when you are away from the map

NOAA Weather Radio provides another channel for official watches, warnings, forecasts and hazard information. NWS broadcasts operate continuously. Depending on the receiver, features may include audible or visual alerts, Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) location selection and battery backup.

Capabilities differ by receiver model, and a radio is useful only where the signal is reliable. Check reception at your home, workplace or shelter before storm conditions arrive. Treat Weather Radio as a preparedness aid, not a replacement for the current NHC map, local emergency-management messages or direct instructions from authorities.

What to save for a household or team

  • The storm name or designation, basin and latest advisory number.
  • The issue time and the next expected update time shown on the product.
  • Your location’s watch or warning status, read from the current overlay and legend.
  • The relevant wind-probability, wind-field and arrival-time information.
  • Local evacuation zones, shelter instructions, road information and emergency contacts.

Keep the time attached to any printed or shared map. A forecast without its issue time can be mistaken for a current warning after the storm has changed.

The key terms in one view

Term Plain-language meaning Limit
Current center Estimated cyclone center at the advisory time Not the full circulation or hazard area
Forecast position Predicted center location at a labeled future time Not a boundary for wind, rain or surge
Cone Historical-error-based uncertainty around forecast center positions Not storm size or local-impact probability
Watch An official alert shown in the product’s watch/warning layer Read the covered area, hazard and valid time
Warning An official alert requiring close attention to the named hazard Follow local instructions; do not infer all hazards from the overlay
Wind probability Likelihood information for specified wind thresholds and periods Threshold, period and location all matter
Wind field Forecast geographic extent of specified wind speeds Different from the center-track cone
Arrival time Expected timing for tropical-storm-force winds or another defined threshold Use the stated window and uncertainty

Bottom line for tracking a live hurricane

Use the newest NHC advisory and map, verify its time, and interpret the cone only as uncertainty in the storm-center track. Read forecast dots and intensity labels for the projected center and strength, then consult separate watch/warning, wind, arrival-time, rainfall and local-impact products. Because a cyclone’s effects can extend far beyond its center and cone, local National Weather Service and emergency-management instructions—not the centerline alone—should guide decisions for your location.
