To track a Bitcoin address, search it in a block explorer such as Blockstream Explorer or Bitcoin.com’s Bitcoin Blockchain Explorer. You can inspect its recorded balance and transaction history. For automatic notifications, use a developer interface that supports address subscriptions or build a monitor around an API that checks confirmed and unconfirmed activity. An address’s public history does not, by itself, prove that it belongs to a particular person or organization—or that its owner is a “whale.”

What tracking a Bitcoin address can—and cannot—tell you

A Bitcoin block explorer presents records from the public blockchain. Search a known address to see transactions associated with it, including payments received and funds spent. Search a transaction ID (txid) to inspect a particular transfer, or a block height to view records in a block. Blockstream’s guide explains that an explorer can show transaction status, confirmations, inputs, outputs, and fee information; Bitcoin.com’s explorer supports address lookups and displays balances and transaction history.

That information describes on-chain activity, not the identity behind it. An address is not necessarily a complete wallet: one person or service can use many addresses, and an address can receive funds without revealing who controls it. Calling an address a whale’s wallet, or assigning it to a named exchange, fund, or individual, requires credible attribution evidence separate from its transaction history. Blockchain.com describes its explorer this way: “Our Block Explorer displays information from public network ledgers.”

In practical terms, “track a whale wallet” usually means keeping an eye on one or more addresses that someone has identified as potentially significant. The explorer can help you verify what those addresses have done on-chain. It cannot establish that the addresses belong to one owner, show activity on other addresses the owner may use, or explain the owner’s motive. Treat “whale” as a label attached to an address by an outside source, not a fact proved by the explorer itself.

A transaction is also not the same thing as a complete picture of an owner’s holdings. An address page reports activity associated with that address; it does not establish that the address represents every address controlled by one person or organization. The same caution applies when looking at a balance: it is a ledger value associated with an address, not a verified statement of an individual’s net worth or complete Bitcoin position.

Look up an address manually

  1. Start with the exact Bitcoin address. Obtain it from a source you trust and check that you have copied it correctly. A typo or a different address will show a different record.
  2. Open a Bitcoin block explorer. Enter the address into the explorer’s search field. Blockstream’s guide describes searching for an address, txid, or block; Bitcoin.com’s explorer also supports searching blockchain records.
  3. Review the address page. Check the displayed balance and transaction history. The history can include transactions that paid to the address and transactions that spent funds from it.
  4. Open a transaction for details. Inspect its status, inputs, outputs, fee, and confirmation count where available. If you have a txid, search for that directly; Blockstream describes a txid as a unique 64-character code.
  5. Revisit the address when needed. A manual lookup shows records available at the time you check. Simply opening an address in an explorer does not, on the evidence cited here, create an automatic email or push alert.

Use the address page for a broad view and a txid page when you want to examine one particular event. A txid is a unique 64-character code according to Blockstream’s guide. If you are starting from a block rather than an address or transaction, a block height can locate the block’s records in context. These are different search routes into the public ledger, not different ways to identify the person behind a transfer.

When comparing two views, make sure you are looking at the same address or txid and that you understand whether the explorer is showing confirmed records, unconfirmed activity, or both. A fresh page may include activity that was not present during an earlier visit. Since explorer dashboards and address records update as new transactions and blocks arrive, note what the page actually reports at the time you check rather than treating a past screenshot or remembered balance as current.

Explorer pages and dashboard values can change as new transactions and blocks arrive. Treat a balance or transaction list as a view of recorded ledger activity, rather than proof of ownership, a person’s total holdings, or the reason funds moved.

Understand transaction status before interpreting a move

Unconfirmed transactions

An unconfirmed transaction has been broadcast and is in the mempool, but has not yet been included in a block. Blockstream’s guide explains the distinction between mempool activity and confirmations. A monitor that checks only confirmed transaction history can therefore miss activity that has appeared but is not yet confirmed.

That distinction matters when an alert is intended to report activity as soon as it appears. If the monitor uses only confirmed address history, it is reporting a narrower category than a monitor that also checks the separate unconfirmed-address transaction data. The latter may surface an event earlier in its on-chain lifecycle, but it should still be described as unconfirmed until the explorer reports confirmations.

Confirmed transactions

A transaction receives confirmations as blocks are added after the block containing it. Blockstream describes six confirmations as a widely used threshold for treating larger payments as final. That is guidance, not a guarantee that a transaction is irreversible; do not present any confirmation count as certainty.

For monitoring, it can help to distinguish an alert for a newly observed transaction from an update that says the transaction has since received confirmations. The first reports detection; the second reports a change in status. If your purpose is to follow a transfer’s progress, store its txid and check its status again rather than treating the initial alert as the final word.

Inputs and outputs are not a market signal by themselves

A large input or output is evidence of a transaction event, not proof of a purchase, sale, exchange deposit, or directional market view. Transactions can include change outputs, and multi-party transaction patterns can make a simple reading misleading. Report what the explorer records; label any explanation of why funds moved as inference unless independently established.

For example, an alert that an address has a new transaction can accurately report that the explorer has recorded activity. Calling that transaction a sale, accumulation, exchange transfer, or bullish or bearish signal goes beyond the ledger facts unless separate evidence supports the interpretation. A value that looks large is not, on its own, proof of the transaction’s purpose.

Choose how to receive address alerts

Approach What it does Coverage and access Main trade-off
Manual explorer lookup Lets you inspect an address when you choose to search it. Browser-based address and transaction records. No automatic notification is established by simply viewing the page.
Address subscription over WebSocket Connects an application to a documented address-subscription operation for notifications. Blockchain.com’s WebSocket documentation describes real-time notifications, including an addr_sub operation for one Bitcoin address, and mentions unconfirmed transactions and new blocks. Requires an application to maintain the connection and handle notifications. Verify the current endpoint, authentication expectations, and availability before implementing it.
API-based polling or monitoring Checks an address’s records on a schedule and triggers an alert when the results change. Esplora documents address statistics, confirmed address transaction history, and a separate endpoint for unconfirmed mempool transactions, as well as transaction-status endpoints. The API provides data, not the alert-delivery mechanism. You must configure the schedule, comparison logic, and notification channel.
Self-hosted explorer or API Runs explorer or API infrastructure you control for lookups or monitoring. Blockstream and Esplora document self-hosting options. Requires setup and ongoing operation. Self-hosting is optional, not necessary for an ordinary lookup.

The cited sources establish these lookup and developer-interface approaches, but do not establish provider reliability, API quotas, or guaranteed notification latency. They also do not verify a current consumer-facing push or email alert feature in a public explorer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The choice is mainly about convenience, coverage, and operational responsibility. A manual lookup is the simplest option if you only need to check occasionally, but you must remember to return to the explorer. A WebSocket subscription is designed to deliver notifications to an application when the documented event occurs, but requires a running application that can keep the connection and process the notifications. Polling checks the API on a schedule, so the application controls when it checks and what it compares. A self-hosted setup gives you infrastructure you operate, but also means you take on setup and maintenance.

These are not equivalent alert guarantees. The available documentation describes an address subscription and API data endpoints; it does not establish a universal response time, uptime commitment, provider quota, or notification delivery service. Before depending on any approach, check the current documentation for that provider and test the complete path from data retrieval to the alert channel you plan to use.

Set up an API monitor

An API-based monitor is useful when you want to check an address repeatedly or include both confirmed history and unconfirmed mempool activity. Esplora’s documentation separates confirmed address transactions from unconfirmed address transactions, so a monitor should account for both if its purpose is to detect activity as soon as it appears.

  1. Choose the address and data source. Use an Esplora-compatible API and consult its current documentation for exact endpoints and response fields. API details can evolve; do not assume an endpoint or response format without checking the documentation.
  2. Decide what counts as an alert. For example, you might alert on any newly observed transaction, or only on one that has reached a chosen confirmation count. Keep detection separate from interpretation: an alert can say that an address has a new transaction without asserting why.
  3. Check confirmed and unconfirmed activity. Use the documented confirmed-history and mempool routes as appropriate. Comparing results over time lets your application identify records it has not seen before.
  4. Record transaction identifiers and status. Track txids and status so repeated checks do not send duplicate notifications, and so an initially unconfirmed transaction can be recognized if its status changes.
  5. Configure delivery separately. Send the resulting event to the notification channel your application supports. The API supplies blockchain data; it does not automatically configure email, text, or push delivery for you.
  6. Test the workflow and keep it running. Confirm that the monitor can reach its data source, process the returned records, and deliver an alert. A polling monitor depends on the code and service running; a WebSocket monitor depends on maintaining and handling its connection.

The cited Esplora documentation establishes the data categories and endpoints, not a particular ready-made monitoring script, polling interval, API quota, or notification service. Choose operating details from the current documentation and your own reliability needs rather than assuming a universal setting.

Design the alert so it reports an observable event

Define the event before connecting a delivery channel. An “any new transaction” rule is broader than a rule that waits for a selected number of confirmations. A rule that includes mempool records covers unconfirmed activity as well as confirmed history; a confirmed-only rule intentionally excludes activity that has not yet appeared in confirmed history. State that choice clearly in the alert itself so a recipient does not mistake an early notification for a confirmed transfer.

Use the txid as a way to recognize a transaction across repeated checks. If the same record appears in successive API results, the monitor should not automatically treat every appearance as a new event. Retaining the identifiers already seen lets it distinguish new records from repeat observations. Keeping status information alongside those identifiers also lets it report that an earlier unconfirmed transaction has advanced to a confirmed state, rather than sending an indistinguishable second “new transaction” message.

Make the alert language factual and compact: identify the monitored address, the txid if available, and the status the data source reports. Avoid labeling the event as a whale “buy” or “sell” based only on its inputs and outputs. If you include an interpretation, identify it as an inference and separate it from the transaction details shown by the explorer.

What the API does not do for you

An API response is data, not a complete alerting system. The documentation described here does not supply a ready-made monitor, a universal polling frequency, a notification destination, or a guarantee that a delivery will arrive within a specified time. Your application needs a running process to request or receive data, compare it with what it has already observed, and pass the resulting event to an alert channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No “best” interval or guaranteed latency is established. Choose an operating schedule based on the purpose of your monitor and the current API documentation, then test whether the full system behaves as intended. Do not assume a provider’s current access rules, endpoint, authentication expectations, or quotas from an old example; confirm them before implementation.

Costs, requirements, and self-hosting

The basic address lookup requires no dedicated hardware: a browser-based public explorer is enough to inspect public records. The available public explorer and API documentation describes software services, but does not establish a specific price, quota, or service plan for an API. Check a provider’s current terms if you need to know whether a particular use has a charge or limit; do not infer one from the fact that an API exists.

Automated monitoring adds operational requirements even when the data source itself is available as a software service. You need an application that can use the current API or WebSocket interface, keep running or reconnect as appropriate, interpret returned data, and deliver an alert through a separately configured channel. The source documentation does not validate a particular implementation, hosting provider, hardware configuration, or ready-made alert tool.

Self-hosting is an optional advanced route, not a requirement for tracking an address. Blockstream and Esplora document self-hosted explorer/API options, and Esplora says self-hosting its API server can provide better privacy and security. A small single-board computer such as a Raspberry Pi is a possible category of hardware for a reader considering a home setup, but the documentation does not prescribe or validate a specific model. Any self-hosted system also brings setup and ongoing operation responsibilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat self-hosting as a complete privacy guarantee. It can reduce the need to send address lookups to a public explorer or API provider, but the source does not say that it eliminates all network-level metadata exposure. Similarly, a public address being visible on-chain does not mean a third-party provider has no additional information when you query it. The privacy practices of individual public services have not been established.

Privacy, hosting, and attribution

A public address is visible on the ledger, but querying it through a public website or API may also reveal your interest in that address to the service you contact. This is distinct from revealing the address owner’s identity. The Esplora documentation says self-hosting its API server can provide better privacy and security; that supports self-hosting as an option, but does not establish the privacy practices of every public explorer or remove all network-level metadata exposure.

Keep two privacy questions separate. The first is what the ledger makes publicly observable: transactions and associated address activity. The second is what a service may learn when your browser or application requests data about a particular address. The sources establish that the first category is public ledger information and that self-hosting may offer better privacy and security; they do not establish how every provider logs, retains, or uses queries.

Attribution is a separate evidence problem. A familiar label on a website or in a third-party discussion is not the same thing as proof supplied by the address’s raw transaction history. Unless credible separate evidence supports the claim, write “the address received funds” or “the address sent a transaction,” not “the exchange bought Bitcoin” or “the fund sold.” This keeps what the ledger shows distinct from who may control the address and why the funds moved.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I track a Bitcoin whale wallet?

Start with a known Bitcoin address and search it in a block explorer. Review the address’s balance and associated transaction history, then open individual txids to inspect status, confirmations, inputs, outputs, and fees where available. The explorer shows on-chain records; it does not by itself prove who controls the address or that it is a whale’s complete wallet.

How do I get alerts when a Bitcoin address moves funds?

The documented options are a developer application using Blockchain.com’s WebSocket address subscription, or a monitor built around an API such as Esplora. The WebSocket documentation describes an addr_sub operation and notifications; an Esplora-based monitor can check confirmed history and, separately, unconfirmed mempool activity. In either case, verify current implementation details and configure alert delivery separately.

Can I get an alert from simply opening an address in a block explorer?

No alert feature is established by simply viewing an address page in the available sources. A manual lookup lets you inspect records when you choose to search. For automated notifications, use a documented developer interface or build a monitor that checks API data and sends a notification through a separately configured channel.

Can I monitor unconfirmed Bitcoin transactions?

Yes, the documented Esplora API has a separate endpoint for unconfirmed address transactions in the mempool, in addition to confirmed address history. Blockchain.com’s WebSocket documentation also describes notifications that include unconfirmed transactions. Verify current endpoints and availability before relying on either implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a large Bitcoin transaction prove that a whale bought or sold?

No. A large input or output is evidence of a transaction event, not proof of a purchase, sale, exchange deposit, or market view. Change outputs and multi-party transaction patterns can make superficial interpretations misleading. Report the explorer’s recorded activity and treat explanations of motive as inference unless independently supported.

Do I need to buy hardware to track Bitcoin addresses?

No. A public block explorer can be used in a browser, and dedicated hardware is not required for an ordinary lookup. Self-hosting an explorer or API is an optional advanced route that requires setup and ongoing operation. The available documentation does not prescribe a specific hardware model or establish API pricing.

Does self-hosting make address monitoring completely private?

The Esplora documentation says self-hosting its API server can provide better privacy and security. That supports it as an option, but does not establish that self-hosting removes all network-level metadata exposure or that every public explorer has the same privacy practices.

How many confirmations should I wait for?

Blockstream describes six confirmations as a widely used threshold for treating larger payments as final. It is guidance, not a guarantee that a transaction is irreversible. Your monitor can report the confirmation count and status without presenting any count as certainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use a block explorer to inspect the records associated with a Bitcoin address, and use a documented WebSocket subscription or API monitor if you need automated notifications. Include unconfirmed activity if your goal is to detect it, and track txids and status to distinguish a new event from an update. Most importantly, treat the ledger as evidence of transactions—not proof of an owner’s identity, total holdings, or intent.
