Correlate browser errors with backend activity by carrying a shared distributed trace context from the page into API requests, then having the API and downstream services continue that context. The result is a trace graph connecting browser work to server work; matching timestamps alone cannot establish the same causal relationship.
What connects a browser error to an API trace?
The connection is propagated trace context. The W3C Trace Context standard defines two HTTP fields that tracing systems can use to carry it:
traceparentidentifies the trace and the current position within it. It is the portable context needed to link work across instrumented services.tracestateis optional and carries vendor-specific tracing information.
A browser tracing SDK can create or continue context and attach it to an API request. The API’s instrumentation must extract that context and continue the trace; downstream services must do the same if you want the trace to span them. OpenTelemetry describes this as context propagation: preserving causal relationships as work crosses service boundaries. See its JavaScript propagation documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the pieces are configured compatibly, a trace viewer can show related browser and server spans under one trace. A captured JavaScript exception is a separate kind of telemetry: it may be associated with the active trace or request when the selected SDK supports that connection, but an exception does not automatically become a backend span.

How do you set up browser-to-API correlation?
- Instrument browser activity. Choose browser tracing instrumentation that covers the page loads and API calls you need to investigate. OpenTelemetry’s browser guide demonstrates components such as
@opentelemetry/sdk-trace-weband document-load instrumentation. It also shows a page receiving a server-generatedtraceparentvalue. Follow the current documentation for the specific SDK and package versions you deploy. - Configure propagation for intended API destinations. Set the browser instrumentation to send trace context only to the API origins you control or explicitly intend to observe. Do not attach trace headers indiscriminately to unrelated third-party requests.
- Allow the cross-origin request to work. If the page and API are on different origins, check the browser’s CORS rules and the API’s CORS policy for the request headers involved. Configure both sides according to their current browser and server documentation; the exact policy depends on your deployment.
- Instrument the API to continue context. The server must extract incoming trace context and create its work as part of that trace. Instrument downstream services to continue propagation across each additional service boundary.
- Connect error capture to request context where supported. Configure the error-monitoring and tracing SDKs so an error event can link to the active trace or span when the chosen tools support it. Keep the error event and the trace distinct: they may have different capture and sampling paths.
- Verify the trace graph. Send a controlled browser request through the intended API path and inspect the resulting trace in your observability backend. Confirm that browser and server spans share a trace, that downstream spans appear where expected, and that error events link to useful request or trace context.
What should you verify before choosing browser instrumentation?
Do not assume browser tracing has the same maturity as backend tracing. OpenTelemetry’s JavaScript documentation says traces and metrics are stable overall, while client instrumentation for the browser is experimental and mostly unspecified. Check the status and limitations of the particular package or instrumentation you plan to use, rather than treating the overall JavaScript status as a guarantee about browser support.
When evaluating an implementation, check whether it covers your browser framework and request paths, propagates and ingests W3C Trace Context, lets you restrict which origins receive trace headers, and connects error events to trace or span details. Also assess how it handles readable production stack traces through source maps and releases, as well as sampling, retention, privacy, deployment model, and operational overhead. These are evaluation questions; the standards and documentation cited here do not establish a feature-by-feature vendor comparison.

What security and privacy boundaries apply?
Trace headers are observability metadata, not authentication or authorization. The W3C standard discusses privacy concerns from linking activity across requests and abuse risks when a public service naively trusts incoming sampling context. Public APIs should apply their own trust and sampling policies rather than treating client-supplied trace context as authoritative.

Where does Sentry fit as an example?
Sentry’s JavaScript page describes viewing an end-to-end distributed trace that includes API calls and related errors. That makes it an example of the category, not evidence that it is superior to alternatives. Check any platform against your framework, propagation, origin-control, error-linking, privacy, and operational requirements.
