To test a Samsung phone microphone, run the Mic diagnostic in Samsung Members, then record and play back a short clip in Voice Recorder or Camera. If those recordings sound clear but calls or one app do not, check microphone permissions and Bluetooth routing before assuming the phone’s microphone is faulty. Menu names and available tests vary by Galaxy model, region, and software version.
Run the Samsung Members microphone diagnostic

Open Samsung Members and look for Diagnostics or Phone diagnostics. Samsung’s US instructions place the entry point under either Discover or Support, depending on the route and app version. See Samsung’s diagnostic instructions.

Select Microphone or Mic, then follow the on-screen prompts. Allow microphone access if requested; the test may ask you to record and play back audio. Some devices may prompt you to test a second microphone, while others may offer a different set of checks. Samsung describes the feature as a way to check device functions, including the microphone, in Samsung Support’s guide to Samsung Members diagnostics.

Note whether the test passes, fails, or is unavailable. A pass means the tested function worked during that check; it does not establish that every app, call, microphone input path, or network condition will work the same way.

If you cannot find the diagnostic, check the Samsung Members app’s available sections and update the app or phone software where appropriate. The menu and test list can differ by device and software version.
Confirm with a recording and playback
A recording provides a separate, practical check of captured speech. Before recording, temporarily remove a case or film if it may cover a microphone opening, disconnect wired audio accessories, and turn Bluetooth off so the phone is less likely to use another device’s microphone.

Samsung’s microphone and speaker troubleshooting guidance also uses recording and playback as a checkpoint. Clear playback suggests the phone captured audio in that test, but it does not prove that a particular calling app or call connection is working correctly.

If recording works but an app or call does not
When recordings sound clear but the problem occurs in only one app or during calls, focus on permissions, audio routing, and the affected app or call path rather than treating one failed call as proof of hardware damage.

Check microphone access: Look in Settings > Privacy for the device’s microphone access control, if that menu is present, and check the affected app’s microphone permission in Settings. Check audio routing: Turn Bluetooth off and disconnect audio accessories before testing again. A connected device may supply the microphone input instead of the phone’s built-in microphone.

Compare apps: Try another recording app or, for a call problem, another call or location. If only one app fails, review its settings and consider updating or reinstalling it when appropriate.

Check for app interference: If the issue appeared after installing an app, compare behavior in Safe Mode. Samsung’s instructions and available options depend on the phone and software version.
Check for obstruction or moisture safely
Microphone openings are not in the same place on every Galaxy model. Remove anything that could cover an opening, such as a case or film, and consult the guidance for the exact model if you need to identify the microphone location.
If you suspect debris or moisture, avoid inserting anything into an opening or applying liquid. Samsung India advises powering off before cleaning and using gentle methods without sharp objects or excessive pressure; Samsung US advises letting a wet device air-dry and cautions against compressed air. Follow the instructions for your region and model: Samsung India’s Galaxy cleaning guidance and Samsung US guidance for a wet Galaxy device.

When to contact Samsung
Contact Samsung support or arrange service through Samsung’s local service options if the diagnostic continues to fail, recordings remain poor after basic isolation, or the problem persists across apps. A diagnostic or recording check can help narrow down the issue, but it does not identify the exact failed component or determine whether service is covered.
