The fastest way to test a Pixel microphone is to compare three recordings: a saved sample in Recorder, the soundtrack of a short Camera video, and what another person hears on a phone or Meet call. Repeat the same checks in Safe Mode. The pattern tells you whether the problem is limited to one microphone path, caused by an app or setting, or likely hardware-related.
Pixel phones contain three identical microphones, but they do not use all three at once. Different tasks select different microphones, so a phone can work on calls while Recorder captures silence. Exact microphone locations vary by Pixel model; use Google’s model-specific hardware guidance rather than guessing which opening is “the top” or “the bottom” mic.
How Pixel microphone selection works
Google documents three identical microphones in Pixel phones. The phone chooses among them according to the task, and the microphones are not active simultaneously. Recorder, Camera, phone calls, Meet, speakerphone, noise reduction and connected accessories can therefore follow different audio paths. A successful call does not prove that every internal microphone works.
Because the physical layout changes between models, identify the openings from Google’s Pixel speakers and microphones guide. Keep the model diagram open while you inspect the phone. Do not assume that an opening near a camera, charging port or speaker has the same function on every Pixel generation.

Your goal is not to name a hole by appearance. It is to establish which tasks fail, whether the failure follows the phone into Safe Mode, and whether Google’s built-in support tools report a microphone fault.
Prepare the phone before testing
- Remove a case, skin or screen protector that could overlap a microphone opening. Keep fingers away from the openings while speaking.
- Disconnect wired headphones, USB-C audio adapters and other accessories. An accessory can change audio routing, so test the phone’s internal microphones first.
- Check Quick Settings and the affected app for a mute control. A system-wide microphone privacy toggle or an in-app mute can make a healthy microphone appear dead.
- Inspect the openings under good light. If you can see lint, use a soft, dry brush with gentle strokes. Do not push a pin, SIM tool, compressed-air nozzle or other object into a microphone port.
- For a single app, verify its microphone permission in Settings → Apps → [the app] → Permissions → Microphone (wording can vary slightly by Android version). Do this before concluding that the hardware is defective.
- Restart the phone once if the failure began suddenly. Then run the tests below without changing several settings between tests.
The controlled microphone test sequence
Use the same short spoken sentence for each test, at a normal conversational volume. Save each result or write down whether playback was clear, faint, distorted or silent. The sequence deliberately moves from a local recording to a camera recording, a live call and finally a clean software environment.
1. Record and play back in Recorder
- Open the built-in Recorder app.
- Tap the record button and speak for 10 to 15 seconds. Include a few quiet seconds so you can hear the noise floor.
- Stop the recording and save it.
- Play the saved file through the phone speaker. If possible, also listen with headphones so a damaged speaker is not mistaken for a microphone failure.
Write down the result. A normal waveform and clear playback show that the microphone path selected by Recorder captured sound at that moment. Silence, a very low level or intermittent gaps indicate a problem with that path, the app’s permission or an obstruction near the selected opening; they do not identify a particular physical microphone by themselves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Record a Camera video
- Open Camera and switch to video.
- Record a short clip while speaking the same sentence.
- Stop recording and play the clip with the phone’s media player.
Camera uses a task-specific audio path, so compare its soundtrack with the Recorder file rather than treating it as a duplicate test. If the video has clear audio while Recorder is silent, the phone still has at least one working capture path. If both are silent, continue to the call and Safe Mode tests before drawing a hardware conclusion.
3. Make a phone or Meet call
- Place a normal phone call, or start a Google Meet call with someone who can give you immediate feedback.
- Ask the other person to describe what they hear while you speak at a normal volume. Have them listen for silence, low volume, crackling and dropouts.
- If you normally use speakerphone, repeat once with speakerphone off and once with it on, noting the mode for each result.
Google’s Pixel Tablet microphone guidance uses a live Meet call as a practical cross-app check; the same comparison is useful on Pixel phones because calls can select a different microphone from Recorder or Camera. Ask the listener to confirm that they can hear you, rather than relying on your own earpiece audio.

4. Repeat the checks in Safe Mode
Safe Mode temporarily prevents downloaded apps from running. It is the most useful way to separate an app conflict from a system or hardware problem.
- On Pixel 6 and later, hold Power + Volume Up.
- Touch and hold Power off or Restart on the screen.
- Tap OK when the Safe Mode prompt appears. The words “Safe mode” appear at the bottom of the display.
- Repeat the Recorder, Camera and call checks. If you cannot place a call in your normal app, use another built-in calling option available on the phone.
- Restart normally to leave Safe Mode.
Older Pixel models use a different power-button sequence. Follow the model-appropriate steps in Google’s Safe Mode instructions rather than applying the Pixel 6 procedure to every phone.
If the microphone works only in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is likely interfering. If the same test fails in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be responsible.
Use Pixel’s built-in support and diagnostics
Device health & support
On Pixel 6 and later, open Settings → Device health & support. This area can show device status, available diagnostics, warranty information, support choices and repair options. Google states that most diagnostics are available on Pixel 6 and later, but the individual checks shown depend on the model and region.
Run any microphone or audio check offered by your phone and record the exact result. A reported failure is stronger evidence than an app’s silence, but an absent check does not prove that the hardware is healthy; diagnostic availability is not identical on every Pixel.

Community-reported dialer test
A Google Pixel Community discussion reports the dialer code *#*#7287#*#* and individual microphone tests. The official Google help pages do not establish this code as universal or current for every Pixel model. Treat it as an optional, community-reported check: if entering it opens a diagnostic screen, run its audio or microphone tests and note which item fails. If nothing happens, do not repeatedly enter codes or install an untrusted diagnostic application.
Interpret the pattern instead of guessing the microphone location
The table below treats each app as an observation of a different audio path. “Works” means the recording or the other person’s report is clear; “fails” includes silence, severe low volume and repeatable distortion.
| Recorder | Camera video | Call or Meet | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fails | Works | Works | Recorder’s selected path, its permission, or an obstruction near that opening | Check Recorder permission, remove the case, repeat in Safe Mode and run Device health & support diagnostics |
| Works | Fails | Works | Camera’s selected path, Camera permission or a camera-specific audio issue | Check Camera permission and Safe Mode; compare another video app only after built-in tests |
| Works | Works | Fails | Call app, call permissions, Bluetooth or another audio-routing condition; the call path may be the affected one | Disconnect accessories, turn Bluetooth off temporarily, check call and microphone permissions, then retest in Safe Mode |
| Fails | Fails | Fails | Obstruction, USB-C or audio routing, system corruption or hardware failure becomes more likely | Repeat with all accessories removed, run diagnostics and contact Google support if Safe Mode does not change the result |
| Works | Works | Works | No failure reproduced in the built-in tests | Recreate the problem in the specific third-party app and inspect that app’s permission, update and settings |
This matrix narrows the failing path; it does not map a result to a physical “top,” “bottom” or “camera” microphone. Pixel models differ, and signal processing can make one test sound better than another.
Fixes for the most common test outcomes
Recorder is silent, but calls or Camera work
- Open the Recorder app’s microphone permission page and set it to Allow while using the app.
- Check for a microphone privacy toggle in Quick Settings or Privacy controls.
- Remove the case and gently brush visible lint from the openings identified in the hardware diagram.
- Force-close Recorder, restart the phone and create a new sample. Do not rely on an old, corrupted recording.
- Repeat in Safe Mode. If Recorder works there, uninstall or disable recently added apps that can capture, filter or control audio, then test after each change.
If Recorder still fails while Camera and calls remain clear, use Device health & support if available. This pattern is more consistent with a Recorder-specific path or software problem than with total microphone failure.
Calls fail, but Recorder and Camera are clear
First separate the call path from external routing. Disconnect USB-C audio devices, turn Bluetooth off temporarily and repeat a normal call. Check the Phone or Meet app’s microphone permission and any in-call mute control. If the other person hears you in one call app but not another, update or reinstall the failing app and compare its permissions with the working app.

Speakerphone can select a different path, so record whether the failure occurs with it on, off or both. A call-only failure that persists in Safe Mode points away from a downloaded app and toward call routing, system software or the microphone path used for calls.
Camera audio fails while the other tests work
Verify Camera’s microphone permission, then test a newly recorded clip after a restart. Remove any case or accessory that covers the camera-side openings. If Camera alone fails in normal mode but works in Safe Mode, investigate recently installed camera, recording or audio-processing apps. If only one third-party camera app fails, treat that app as the problem until the built-in Camera produces the same symptom.
All built-in tests fail
Repeat the sequence with the case removed, every wired accessory disconnected and Bluetooth temporarily off. Confirm that you are playing the recordings through a working speaker or headphones; a playback fault can mimic a recording fault. If Recorder, Camera and calls all fail in Safe Mode, stop repeatedly changing app settings. The combination makes obstruction, routing, system corruption or hardware failure more plausible, so proceed to Google’s support and repair flow.
Only one third-party app fails
Compare that app with Recorder and Camera before blaming the phone. In the app’s settings, enable its microphone permission, install its latest update, then reinstall it if necessary. Clear any in-app mute, voice-processing or input-device selection. A failure confined to one app is not evidence that an internal Pixel microphone has failed.

A USB-C headset with a microphone can provide an optional external-input comparison when the phone appears to route audio to an accessory. A Pixel Community case describes USB-C adapter and headset routing symptoms, but that report is not an official compatibility guarantee for every Pixel or adapter.
Best Value

Use the result only as a routing clue. If a headset works while internal tests fail, you have shown that the external path can capture audio; you have not proved that every internal microphone is healthy. Disconnect the headset and repeat Recorder, Camera and call tests before deciding where the fault lies.
When to seek Google support or repair
Escalate when the failure is repeatable in Recorder, Camera and calls, survives Safe Mode, or appears as a failed microphone in Device health & support. Open Settings → Device health & support on Pixel 6 and later to review warranty information and available support or repair options. If that menu is unavailable, use Google’s Pixel support page.
Have the following ready for the support agent:
- Pixel model and Android version.
- Which of Recorder, Camera, normal calls, speakerphone and Meet failed.
- Whether the same result occurred in Safe Mode.
- Any diagnostic test name and result.
- Whether removing the case, disconnecting USB-C devices or turning off Bluetooth changed the symptom.
Warranty eligibility and repair availability depend on the model, country and warranty terms. Do not open the phone or insert tools into microphone openings; physical damage can complicate a later repair claim.

How to document a useful failure report
Support can act faster when the observations are precise. Note the date, app, mode and result for each test instead of writing only “the mic is broken.” For example: “Recorder playback silent; Camera soundtrack clear; recipient could not hear me on a normal call; all three tests unchanged in Safe Mode.” Include whether the phone was in a case and whether a USB-C adapter or Bluetooth device was connected. This description identifies a reproducible pattern without assuming which physical opening is at fault.
