For a dependable internet-speed check, first run a computer connected to your gateway by Ethernet with other network activity paused. Record download, upload, and latency, then repeat the same test under the same conditions. After that baseline, test Wi‑Fi in the room and on the device where performance matters. A wired result and a Wi‑Fi result answer different questions, so label them instead of treating them as interchangeable.

One speed-test reading is a snapshot of traffic between one device and one test server at one moment. It is not a guarantee that every website, app, room, or time of day will perform identically. The procedure below helps you determine whether a difference comes from Wi‑Fi, your device, the router, congestion, or the connection delivered by your internet provider.

What an internet speed test actually measures

A speed test sends and receives controlled traffic between the device running the test and the test server selected by the service. The path includes the device, its connection (Ethernet or Wi‑Fi), the router or gateway, your provider’s access network, and the server. Changing any part of that path can change the result.

Download throughput is the rate at which data reaches your device, while upload throughput is the rate at which your device sends data. Ping, also called latency, is the round-trip response time to the test server, measured in milliseconds. Ookla describes ping as “the reaction time of your connection—it’s how quickly your device gets a response after you’ve sent out a request.” A lower latency generally means a quicker response, but throughput and latency describe different characteristics.

If the service reports loaded latency (latency while the connection is busy) or jitter (variation in latency), record those as separate values. Do not reduce the result to the largest download number: a connection can have high download capacity and still feel slow for interactive calls or games if latency becomes high under load.

Decide which question you need answered

There is no single “correct” test location. Choose the question first, then set up the test to match it.

Question Best setup What the result tells you
Is the service reaching my home at roughly the expected rate? Computer connected to the gateway by Ethernet A baseline with most Wi‑Fi variables removed
What performance does my laptop or phone receive in a particular room? The actual device, on Wi‑Fi, in that room The practical experience at that location
What does the router itself measure? The gateway or primary Wi‑Fi point’s built-in test The router’s connection to the test service, not the performance of a specific device
Will a specific app or site work well? Use the device and connection type used for that app, ideally at the time you notice the problem A path-specific snapshot; the app may use different servers and routes

Keep wired and Wi‑Fi readings in separate groups. Comparing them directly without noting the connection type can make a normal wireless limitation look like a provider failure.

Prepare for a controlled test

Pause competing traffic

Stop downloads, cloud backups, game updates, high-resolution streams, and other bandwidth-heavy activity. Pause video calls if possible. Phones, televisions, consoles, and smart-home devices can consume capacity even when you are not using the test computer. Ookla identifies concurrent network activity as a common reason for unexpectedly low results.

If you cannot take every device offline, record what remains active. A result taken while another person is uploading a large file is not comparable with an idle-network result.

Choose one repeatable setup

For comparisons, use the same device, browser or test app, connection type, room, and test service. If the service lets you select a server, record the selected server and keep it unchanged. Also write down the date, time, provider or service tier, and whether the network was idle or busy.

Different browsers, device processors, network adapters, Wi‑Fi radios, routers, and test servers can produce different readings. A change in any of those variables should be treated as a new test condition, not as evidence that one reading is wrong.

Check the device before starting

  • Install pending operating-system and browser updates if they are safe to apply, then restart the device if it has been running for a long time.
  • Close applications that may synchronize or transfer files in the background.
  • For a wired baseline, verify that the Ethernet plug is fully seated in the computer and gateway.
  • For Wi‑Fi, note whether the device is connected to the intended network and band. Do not move to another room between repeated readings.

Run a wired baseline

A wired test is the clearest first check because it removes the radio link between the device and router from most of the measurement. You need a computer with an Ethernet port (or a compatible adapter) and an Ethernet cable; no special cable purchase is required for a basic test. SaskTel’s instructions use the same principle: connect the computer directly to the gateway with Ethernet.

  1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to a LAN port on the gateway or router and the other end to the computer.
  2. Turn off the computer’s Wi‑Fi temporarily, or confirm that Ethernet is the active connection. This prevents the operating system from silently using wireless.
  3. Pause other network activity as described above.
  4. Open the same speed-test service you will use for later comparisons. If a server selector is available, choose one and note its name or location.
  5. Run the test and record download, upload, ping or latency, and any loaded-latency or jitter values shown.
  6. Run at least one more reading without changing the setup. Large differences between immediate runs are a reason to check background traffic, server selection, or the device rather than averaging blindly.

The wired result is not a contractual measurement of your provider’s service. It is a controlled observation of the path from that computer, through the gateway and provider network, to that particular server.

Test the Wi‑Fi experience that matters

After recording the wired baseline, test the phone, laptop, or other device you actually use. Stand or sit in the room where the problem occurs. Wi‑Fi walls, distance, interference, channel use, the device’s radio, and the router’s capabilities all affect this reading.

  1. Disconnect the Ethernet cable if the device has one and join the intended Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Stay in the target room and keep the device in the position normally used. Do not carry it next to the router for a “better” result unless that is the experience you want to measure.
  3. Confirm that competing activity is still paused.
  4. Use the same test service and, where possible, the same server as the wired test.
  5. Record the device model, room, Wi‑Fi band if visible, time, download, upload, latency, and any loaded metrics.
  6. Repeat once or twice without changing position. Then test another room only if you label it as a separate location.

A lower Wi‑Fi result than the wired baseline does not by itself show a provider problem. It shows that the complete path to that device and room is slower under those conditions. The size and consistency of the difference help decide whether to investigate placement, radio conditions, the device, or the service beyond the router.

Understand every reported metric

Download throughput

Download is the rate at which test data reaches the device. It matters for large downloads and multiple streams, but it is only one part of performance. A high advertised plan rate can coexist with a lower reading when the device, wireless link, server, or competing activity is the limiting factor.

Upload throughput

Upload is the rate at which the device sends data. It affects cloud backups, sending large files, livestreaming, and the quality of calls when you are transmitting video or other data. Record it even when download appears normal; providers often offer substantially different download and upload capacities.

Ping or latency

Latency is the response time to the selected test server, in milliseconds. It is path-dependent: a distant or busy server can produce a different value from a nearby one. Latency does not measure how much data the connection can transfer, so it should not be used as a substitute for download or upload.

Loaded latency and jitter

If the test supplies latency while downloading or uploading, keep it separate from idle latency. Loaded latency can reveal how the connection behaves when someone is using capacity. Jitter describes variation in delay; a stable connection with a slightly higher average latency may feel better for a call than one whose delay swings sharply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Router tests and device tests are not interchangeable

A gateway’s built-in check measures traffic from the router or primary Wi‑Fi point to the test service. Google’s Nest and Google Wifi help documentation describes its test in those terms: download and upload from the router or primary point. A laptop or phone test measures from that device over its current Ethernet or Wi‑Fi connection.

Use the router test to check the upstream connection without making a particular client device the limiting factor. Use the device test to evaluate what that client actually receives. If the router reports a strong result while a distant phone reports a weak one, the difference is occurring between the router and phone or in the phone itself. If both are low under controlled conditions, investigate the gateway, provider path, or test-server conditions.

Compare readings without fooling yourself

Before deciding that one result is “slow,” align the conditions. A useful log has one row per test with the following fields:

Field Example entry Why it matters
Date and time 14 October 2026, 20:30 UTC Congestion and household activity vary over time
Device Same laptop for all baseline runs Hardware and software can cap throughput
Connection Ethernet, or Wi‑Fi in the upstairs office These are different paths
Test service and server Service name and selected server The endpoint and route affect the measurement
Network activity Idle, or one active video call Competing traffic consumes capacity
Download, upload, latency Values exactly as displayed Each metric answers a different question
Loaded latency or jitter Record when provided; otherwise “not reported” Shows behavior under load and variation in delay

When comparing two devices, hold the connection type, server, room, and time as close as practical. If one test is wired and the other is Wi‑Fi, describe the comparison as “gateway path versus wireless client experience,” not as a pure device comparison.

Repeat tests to identify a pattern

One reading can be affected by a temporary download, a busy server, a radio burst of interference, or a short-lived provider issue. Repeat under comparable conditions and look for a consistent pattern rather than selecting the highest or lowest value.

NTIA’s 2023 checklist uses the median of three tests taken on separate days for identifying service levels in that particular program context. That is a context-specific method, not a universal consumer rule or a promise that three readings establish a contractual violation. For ordinary troubleshooting, taking multiple readings at comparable times and recording the conditions is more informative than relying on one result.

If you are investigating a time-of-day problem, deliberately test at the affected and unaffected times, while keeping device, server, and connection type unchanged. Label those as separate time windows instead of combining them into one average.

Troubleshoot a persistently low result

1. Eliminate active traffic and retest

Close transfers, streaming sessions, calls, and updates on every practical device. Repeat the test. If the result returns to normal, the original reading reflected shared use rather than the maximum available path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Compare wired and Wi‑Fi from the same area

Use Ethernet for the baseline, then test Wi‑Fi near the gateway and in the problem room. A large, repeatable drop only in the distant room points toward wireless coverage, interference, placement, or the client device. A low wired result as well points farther upstream or toward the gateway and computer.

3. Check equipment and client limits

Older routers, Ethernet ports, adapters, and Wi‑Fi radios may not support the full service rate. The same is true of an overloaded or underpowered test device. Confirm the negotiated link speed shown by the operating system, inspect cables and adapters for damage, and test with another known-capable computer if available. Treat the second computer as a separate reading and record its hardware.

4. Check the test endpoint

Run the same test against the same server again, then try another nearby server only as a diagnostic. A changed server changes the measured path. If one endpoint is consistently unusual while others are normal, the endpoint or route may be influencing the reading; do not present that single result as the speed of every destination.

5. Contact the provider with controlled evidence

If repeated wired tests remain unexpectedly low after competing traffic is removed, contact your internet provider. Supply the dates and times, device, wired connection details, selected server, download, upload, latency, and the steps already tried. Ask which diagnostic procedure or service-level terms apply in your region and plan. A consumer speed test alone does not establish a legal or contractual breach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common testing mistakes

  • Testing while another transfer is running: the test shares capacity and may look artificially low.
  • Comparing a wired computer with a Wi‑Fi phone: the measurements include different local links.
  • Changing servers between runs without noting it: distance, server load, and routing can change the result.
  • Reporting only download: upload and latency may explain a call, backup, or gaming problem.
  • Moving rooms between repetitions: location changes the wireless conditions.
  • Treating the router’s test as the phone’s experience: a router-level result does not include the phone’s radio or room.
  • Declaring the provider at fault from one reading: temporary activity and conditions can affect a single snapshot.
  • Applying one universal “acceptable speed” number: requirements depend on the activities, number of users, equipment, and service terms.

A practical record sheet

Copy this outline into a note or spreadsheet for each run:

  • Date and local time (include time zone if sharing results)
  • Provider and service tier as shown on the account
  • Device model and operating system
  • Ethernet or Wi‑Fi; if Wi‑Fi, room and visible band
  • Test service and selected server
  • Whether the network was idle or what activity remained
  • Download throughput
  • Upload throughput
  • Idle latency or ping
  • Loaded latency and jitter, if reported
  • Any unusual event, such as a disconnect or router restart

Keeping this information with the numbers turns a vague complaint into a reproducible comparison. It also prevents an unusually high or low reading from being mistaken for the normal performance of the connection.

When the result is “slow” but the internet feels fine

A test can be lower than the plan’s headline rate while ordinary browsing works normally. The test may be limited by the device, browser, Wi‑Fi link, selected server, route, or a short period of congestion. Conversely, a high download result does not rule out poor call quality if upload, loaded latency, jitter, or the application’s own server path is problematic.

Use the test to isolate a path and a condition, not to assign a universal grade to the entire internet connection. Match the setup to the experience you are trying to explain, preserve the variables that matter, and investigate only after a pattern appears.
