The reliable way to test cloud-gaming internet is to measure the connection to the gaming service you will actually use, then confirm the result in a real game session. A generic speed test can show excellent download speed while the route to a cloud-gaming data center has excessive latency, packet loss, or jitter.
Choose your service and streaming quality first. Run its own network diagnostic when available, record bandwidth, ping, packet loss, and jitter, compare those values with the service’s current requirements, and retest after changing one local condition at a time.
What “good enough” means for cloud gaming
Cloud gaming sends video frames from a remote data center to your device while your controller, keyboard, or mouse input travels back. The connection therefore has two jobs: deliver a sustained video stream and carry input with minimal delay. A high download-speed number addresses only part of the first job.
There is no universal “cloud-gaming speed.” The target depends on the provider, device, resolution, frame rate, game stream settings, and the network path to that provider. A connection that works well for one service or television may perform poorly with another data center.

NVIDIA Support explicitly warns that ordinary internet speed tests do not evaluate the connection to a GeForce NOW server. Treat a generic test as a household-network baseline, not as a pass/fail verdict for a game stream.
The four measurements that matter
| Measurement | What it tells you | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Bandwidth | How much data can be delivered continuously, usually reported in Mbps. | Meet or exceed your service’s stated target for the selected resolution and frame rate, with headroom for normal household use. |
| Ping (latency) | Round-trip time between your device and the provider’s data center, usually in milliseconds. | Lower is better. Excessive latency makes controls feel delayed even when video quality is sharp. |
| Packet loss | The percentage of data packets that never reach their destination or return. | Ideally zero. Lost packets can cause stalls, visible corruption, and sudden quality drops. |
| Jitter | Variation in packet arrival time. | Low and consistent values are preferable. A low average ping with large swings can still feel erratic. |
NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW tester reports all four. Its support guidance describes a good network as having no packet loss and says low ping helps prevent a delay between pressing a control and seeing the result on screen. These are vendor diagnostics, not independent laboratory measurements, but they identify the properties that directly affect interactive streaming.
Read the measurements together. For example, bandwidth can exceed the target while jitter or packet loss causes stutters. Conversely, a modest but stable result may feel better than a faster connection with frequent timing swings. Record the actual values rather than relying on a single “good” or “bad” label.

- Name the service. Select the platform you intend to play on, such as GeForce NOW or Amazon Luna. Do not borrow one provider’s requirement as a general rule for every service.
- Choose the device. Requirements can differ between a native PC app, browser, phone, television, handheld, or streaming box.
- Choose the stream quality. Record the resolution and frame rate you want, such as 1080p at 60 frames per second or 4K at 120 frames per second.
- Find the provider’s current requirements. Requirements change, and the same service may publish different thresholds by device and quality mode.
This preparation prevents a common mistake: testing for a modest 1080p stream and assuming the result guarantees a higher-resolution, higher-frame-rate mode.
Also note the account region and the location selected by the client. A test on a laptop in one room does not prove that a television in another room, connected to a different band, will perform identically. Use the same endpoint, controller, and display arrangement you plan to use for regular play whenever possible.
Run the provider’s network diagnostic
GeForce NOW
GeForce NOW includes a route-specific test in its client. To run it:
- Open the GeForce NOW app.
- Open Settings.
- Leave Server Location set to Auto, unless you have a specific reason to test another location.
- Select TEST NETWORK.
- Record the displayed bandwidth, ping, packet loss, and jitter.
According to NVIDIA Support, Auto selects a nearby suitable data center. The support page also notes that a VPN can prevent the client from finding the closest data center, so test with the VPN disabled when you are diagnosing ordinary home connectivity. Re-enable it later if you need to determine whether its route is usable.

Other services
If your chosen service offers an in-app network test, use it with the same device and network you will use for play. If it does not, run a reputable general speed test only as a baseline, then judge the connection during an actual session. Record the time, connection type, and stream settings so that later comparisons are meaningful.
When a provider test is unavailable, avoid presenting a generic result as proof of eligibility. It can reveal that your local link is unusually slow, but it cannot show the complete route to the game server. A real session is the final check for services without a route-specific diagnostic.
Published requirements you can use as reference points
GeForce NOW
NVIDIA’s current requirements page lists these examples for native PC platforms:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

|---|---|---|
| HD, up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps | Less than 80 ms network latency from an NVIDIA data center; NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or a router using 5 GHz Wi-Fi. |
| FHD at 60 FPS | 25 Mbps | |
| QHD or ultrawide QHD at 120 FPS | 35 Mbps | |
| 4K at 120 FPS | 45 Mbps |
These are service requirements, not independent performance tests. NVIDIA lists other values for browsers, phones, televisions, and handheld devices, so use the value for your actual platform rather than assuming the native-PC figures apply everywhere. The less-than-80-ms figure is measured to an NVIDIA data center, not necessarily to a nearby generic test server.
Amazon Luna
Amazon Luna lists at least 10 Mbps sustained speed for 1080p. Amazon recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi when available and advises disabling VPNs and proxies while streaming. “Sustained” matters: a brief speed-test peak is not equivalent to maintaining the required rate throughout a session.
Xbox Cloud Gaming and other platforms
The figures above should not be used as Xbox Cloud Gaming requirements. Current Xbox requirements and any diagnostic supplied by Xbox should be checked directly for the device and quality mode you plan to use. If a provider does not publish a single threshold, use its own guidance and a real-session test instead of inventing a universal minimum.
Test your connection in a controlled sequence
1. Establish a baseline
Close large downloads, video calls, backups, and other heavy traffic. Run the provider diagnostic, or a general test if no provider test exists. Write down bandwidth, ping, packet loss, jitter, device, stream target, and whether you are on Ethernet, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
2. Compare with the service target
Check bandwidth against the exact service, device, resolution, and frame-rate requirement. Check latency against the provider’s latency guidance. Treat any packet loss as a warning for interactive play, and look for unstable jitter rather than focusing only on the average number.

- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
3. Test Ethernet
Connect the gaming device directly to the router with Ethernet, if both devices have compatible ports. Run the same diagnostic from the same room and at roughly the same time. A Cat 6 cable is an optional troubleshooting accessory, not a cure-all: it cannot shorten the physical distance to a remote data center, repair ISP routing, or fix a provider-side outage.
4. Test 5 GHz Wi-Fi
If you normally use Wi-Fi, connect to the 5 GHz band on a dual-band router when it is available. Run the test again without changing other conditions. 5 GHz often reduces congestion compared with 2.4 GHz, but its shorter range means walls and distance can offset the benefit.
5. Test without a VPN or proxy
Temporarily disable the VPN or proxy and repeat the provider diagnostic. Compare the route-specific latency, packet loss, jitter, and bandwidth. If the direct connection is better, the tunnel is part of the problem; decide whether its privacy or location features justify the added delay for your use case.

6. Check another time of day
Run a second comparison during the period when you normally play. Household uploads, neighborhood congestion, and ISP peak-time conditions can change results. Keep the device, server selection, and stream target the same so that time is the variable you are testing.
7. Change one condition at a time
Do not switch router, Wi-Fi band, VPN status, and device simultaneously. Isolating each change tells you whether the limiting factor is local wireless interference, the tunnel, congestion, or the upstream route.
8. Keep a simple test log
For each run, note the date and time, device, server setting, connection type, stream target, bandwidth, ping, packet loss, jitter, and what changed. Add a short session note such as “responsive for 30 minutes” or “two stalls during combat.” This makes an Ethernet-versus-Wi-Fi comparison meaningful and gives an ISP or service support team concrete timestamps if the issue persists.
Validate the numbers with a real game session
A diagnostic is evidence about the connection, not a promise of a particular experience. Launch a game you know well and play long enough to encounter ordinary movement, camera turns, combat, menus, and loading transitions.
- Input response: Does a button press produce a prompt, consistent on-screen response, or is there a noticeable delay?
- Stream stability: Do you see pauses, repeated “network” warnings, sudden resolution changes, or dropped frames?
- Image quality: Does the picture remain readable during motion, or does it become blocky when the scene changes?
- Consistency: Is the experience stable for the whole session, not merely good during the first few minutes?
GeForce NOW allows testing with a free membership before purchasing a membership. Use that opportunity to evaluate the actual route and device you plan to keep using rather than relying only on a subscription-page specification. Test more than one game scene if possible, because rapid camera movement and busy scenes make stream weaknesses easier to notice than a static menu.

How to diagnose a disappointing result
Bandwidth is below the target
First check for competing traffic on your home network. Pause large downloads and uploads, then retest. If the provider diagnostic remains below its target, a faster internet plan may help, but only if throughput is the limiting measurement. More advertised Mbps will not automatically fix high latency or packet loss.
Ping is high but bandwidth is adequate
High latency can come from distance to the data center, ISP routing, a VPN, or a busy local link. Try the provider’s automatic server selection, disable the VPN or proxy, and compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. If every local setup produces similar latency, changing Wi-Fi equipment is unlikely to solve a remote-route limitation.
Packet loss appears
Packet loss is especially damaging to interactive streams. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi, remove the VPN or proxy, and test with other household traffic paused. Persistent loss on both wired and wireless connections points toward the modem, router, ISP path, or provider route rather than a single room’s Wi-Fi signal.

Jitter is high or keeps fluctuating
Look for intermittent congestion rather than a single bad reading. Repeat the test at your normal play time, use Ethernet, and stop competing uploads. A connection can meet the nominal bandwidth target while still feeling inconsistent if packet timing varies widely.
The provider test is good but the game still feels poor
Check whether the game is using a different device, account region, or stream mode than the one you tested. Confirm that the client is up to date and that the television, monitor, controller, and local display settings are not adding perceived delay. Then retest in the same game session conditions; a short diagnostic cannot reveal every game-specific or provider-side issue.
Ethernet versus Wi-Fi: what to compare
| Comparison point | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Route stability | Usually less affected by walls, neighboring networks, and radio interference. | Can vary with distance, congestion, band selection, and household interference. |
| Diagnostic value | Useful control condition for separating local wireless problems from upstream problems. | Test both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz when the router and device support them. |
| Practical constraint | Requires compatible ports and a cable run. | More convenient, but performance can change as the device moves or the environment changes. |
| What it cannot fix | Neither setup can repair remote-server distance, ISP routing, or a provider-side outage. | |
Use measurements and session stability to choose. Do not buy a new router by default; first establish that local Wi-Fi is the variable causing the poor result. A 5 GHz-capable dual-band router with Ethernet ports is relevant only when your comparison demonstrates a wireless limitation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical pass, caution, or fail decision
- Ready to try: The provider-specific test meets the service’s bandwidth and latency guidance, packet loss is absent or negligible, jitter is low and stable, and a real session remains responsive.
- Needs local troubleshooting: Ethernet or 5 GHz materially improves packet loss, jitter, or latency, or disabling a VPN changes the result. Use the improved setup and retest during normal play hours.
- Route or service problem likely: Results remain poor on wired and wireless connections, with the VPN disabled and competing traffic stopped. Contact the ISP or service provider with timestamps and measurements, and check for an outage.
These categories are practical decisions, not guarantees. A service can change data-center capacity or requirements, and conditions can vary by time of day. Recheck after a major router, ISP, location, or streaming-quality change.
Common testing mistakes
- Using download speed alone as a verdict.
- Testing against a generic server that is much closer than the cloud-gaming data center.
- Comparing different resolutions or frame rates without noting the change.
- Testing on Ethernet but playing on distant 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Leaving a VPN or proxy active while trying to diagnose the normal route.
- Judging performance from a single short run instead of a complete game session.
- Assuming another provider’s Mbps figure applies to your service.
- Upgrading the internet plan or router before identifying whether bandwidth, latency, loss, or jitter is actually limiting.
- Changing several variables at once, so you cannot tell which adjustment helped.
- Ignoring sustained behavior because the first few minutes looked good.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a generic speed test enough to approve my connection for cloud gaming?
No. It measures your route to that test provider, not necessarily the route to your cloud-gaming data center. Use the gaming provider’s diagnostic when available, then confirm with a real session.

What numbers should I record?
Record bandwidth, ping or latency, packet loss, and jitter, along with the service, device, resolution, frame rate, connection type, server setting, and test time.
Does a faster internet plan always reduce controller delay?
No. More bandwidth helps only when throughput is the bottleneck. Distance, ISP routing, VPNs, packet loss, and jitter can keep latency high on a fast plan.
Should I use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Compare both on the same device and at a similar time. Ethernet is a useful control condition; 5 GHz can improve a local wireless route when the router and device support it, although walls and distance may reduce its benefit.
Can a Cat 6 cable fix a bad cloud-gaming route?
It can help determine whether local Wi-Fi is the problem, but it cannot fix remote-server distance, ISP routing, or a provider outage.
What should I do if GeForce NOW reports poor results?
Leave Server Location on Auto, disable any VPN or proxy, compare Ethernet with 5 GHz Wi-Fi, stop competing traffic, and run the test again. If results stay poor on both wired and wireless connections, contact the ISP or NVIDIA with your logged measurements.
What is Amazon Luna’s minimum speed for 1080p?
Amazon Luna lists at least 10 Mbps sustained speed for 1080p and recommends wired networking or 5 GHz Wi-Fi when available.
The Bottom Line
Test the route to the cloud-gaming service you actually plan to use. Check bandwidth against that service’s device and stream target, measure ping, packet loss, and jitter, compare Ethernet with 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and disable VPNs or proxies while diagnosing. Finish with a sustained game session: only responsive controls and stable video under normal play show that the connection is good enough for you.
