The reliable way to test IPv6 is to work in layers: inspect the active adapter, run a browser test that separates IPv4-only, IPv6-only, and dual-stack connections, then force an IPv6 ping and trace when you need more detail. A passing check proves that your device reached that particular destination over IPv6 at that moment; it does not prove that every website or application will choose IPv6 or work correctly.
What “working IPv6” actually means
IPv6 can be present at one layer and broken at another. Your network adapter may have an IPv6 address, while DNS returns no usable IPv6 address for a name. A hostname may resolve to IPv6, while the route to the destination is unusable. A basic connection may work, while larger transfers fail because of a path-size problem. Testing one symptom cannot distinguish these cases.
Use three questions to define the result you need:
- Is IPv6 configured locally? The adapter has IPv6 information such as an address and default gateway.
- Can a browser reach an IPv6-only destination? This tests an application using a destination that cannot fall back to IPv4.
- Can the operating system select, route, and reach IPv6 when instructed? An IPv6-specific ping and trace expose address selection, name resolution, and hop-by-hop behavior.
These tests complement one another. An interface address is evidence of configuration, not proof of end-to-end reachability. A dual-stack website can still load over IPv4 when IPv6 is unavailable, so it answers a different question from an IPv6-only test.
Choose the right test for the question

Run the checks in that order. It prevents a command-line result from being mistaken for a browser result, and it gives you evidence to compare when one test fails.

Step 1: Inspect the active adapter on Windows
Start with the device rather than the website. Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfigFor a complete view of the TCP/IP settings, run:
ipconfig /allFind the adapter you are actually using
Windows may list several interfaces, including disconnected Ethernet, Wi-Fi, virtual adapters, and tunnel interfaces. Identify the Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter that carries your current connection. Read its IPv6 address information and default gateway rather than drawing a conclusion from an inactive interface.
The output can show IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, subnet masks, and default gateways. An IPv6 address on the active interface indicates that the device has received or configured IPv6 information. It does not establish that packets can leave the local network, that DNS supplies IPv6 destinations, or that a remote service will answer.
Record the result before changing anything
Save or copy the relevant adapter section. Note which interface is active and whether an IPv6 address and IPv6 default gateway appear there. Keeping this baseline makes later troubleshooting clearer: if the browser test fails, you can distinguish missing local configuration from a problem farther along the path.
Step 2: Run a browser test that separates IPv4 and IPv6
Open test-ipv6.com in the browser you want to evaluate. Its test sequence checks destinations with IPv4-only, IPv6-only, and dual-stack DNS records, and it also includes large-packet checks.

Why the IPv6-only result matters most
A dual-stack destination publishes both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. If IPv6 is unavailable, the browser may still connect over IPv4, so a successful dual-stack check alone is not proof that IPv6 works. The IPv6-only check removes that fallback. When the IPv6-only check succeeds, the browser reached a destination using IPv6 at the time of testing.
A common pattern is a successful IPv4-only check, a successful dual-stack check, and a failed IPv6-only check. That pattern is consistent with a working IPv4 path but no usable IPv6 path to the IPv6-only test endpoint. It does not, by itself, identify whether the cause is local configuration, a missing route, DNS behavior, or filtering; use the command-line tests to narrow that down.

Basic connectivity can pass while the large-packet checks fail. The test-ipv6.com page identifies this combination as a possible path-MTU discovery issue and specifically calls out filtering of ICMPv6 “Packet Too Big” messages as something to investigate. Treat it as a packet-size or path problem, not immediate evidence that the adapter or router must be replaced.
Browser prerequisites and limits
The JavaScript version of the test requires JavaScript and cross-site scripts. If those are blocked by the browser or an extension, use the page’s simpler pass/fail alternative. That alternative provides less diagnostic information. Results are dependent on the network and browser at the moment you run them, so a pass is about that test destination and time, not a permanent guarantee for every service.
Step 3: Force an IPv6 ping on Windows
When the browser result is unclear, test the address family explicitly. Microsoft documents this form:

ping -6 nameReplace name with a hostname that has an IPv6 address in DNS (an AAAA record) or in the local hosts file. The -6 switch tells Windows to use IPv6 rather than allowing the command to choose another address family.

Test a hostname
Run the command against a known IPv6-capable hostname:
ping -6 example-hostnameUse a destination you are authorized to test and that is known to publish an IPv6 address. A reply shows that the name resolved to IPv6 and that an IPv6 echo request reached a responder that sent an echo reply. It is a useful reachability signal, but it still describes one host and one protocol.
Test a known global IPv6 address
If you have a known global IPv6 address, ping the address directly instead of a name. This separates name resolution from packet delivery:
ping -6 2001:db8::1The address above is an example format, not a claim that it is a reachable public service. Substitute the actual global IPv6 address you intend to test.

Interpret name-versus-address differences
If pinging a known IPv6 address succeeds but ping -6 against its hostname fails, investigate name resolution. Confirm that the hostname has an AAAA record and that the command is receiving that record. Microsoft describes ping as an IP-level connectivity test; success by address with failure by name can indicate a name-resolution problem rather than a general IPv6 routing failure.
If both the address and hostname tests fail, compare the interface data from ipconfig /all with the browser results. A missing IPv6 default gateway or an unusable local address points to configuration. A configured interface with no response from an IPv6-only destination requires route and filtering investigation.
Step 4: Trace the IPv6 route
On Windows, run:
tracert -6 hostnameThis asks Windows to trace the route using IPv6 and reports responding hops and their timings. Use the same hostname that you tested with ping -6 when possible, so you are comparing like with like.
What the trace can tell you
- Early hops respond: Your device and at least part of the local IPv6 path are forwarding traffic.
- The trace stops near the beginning: Check the active adapter, local gateway information, and whether the network is actually providing IPv6 routing.
- Hops continue but the destination does not answer: The destination or an intermediate network may filter trace probes or echo traffic; this is not conclusive proof that all IPv6 traffic fails.
- Large delays or a break farther away: Compare with another destination and with the browser’s IPv6-only result before assigning blame to a single device.
Trace output is diagnostic, not a guarantee that every hop must answer. Some routers do not return trace responses even while forwarding packets. Use the overall pattern—configuration, browser reachability, ping, and trace—rather than one missing line.

Why a ping timeout is not a final verdict
Ping depends on an ICMP echo reply. A destination or firewall can filter that reply even when other traffic is permitted. Consequently, a timed-out ping can mean “this endpoint did not answer this probe,” not necessarily “the network has no IPv6.” Test-ipv6.com provides an application-level comparison, while the trace can show whether packets progress through the route.

The same caution applies to Windows Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) probes. Microsoft’s NCSI troubleshooting guidance states: “The inability of NCSI to complete a probe doesn’t necessarily imply that the client machine can’t access the internet.” Use that statement as a diagnostic boundary: a probe failure is one signal, not a complete outage determination.
Investigate large-transfer failures after basic IPv6 works
If small requests and ordinary pings work but the browser’s large-packet checks fail, focus on the path rather than replacing hardware immediately. IPv6 relies on path-MTU discovery to learn when packets are too large for a link. The test page identifies filtered ICMPv6 “Packet Too Big” messages as one possible cause.
- Confirm that the IPv6-only basic test succeeds.
- Run the large-packet checks again in the same browser so the conditions are comparable.
- Run
tracert -6 hostnameand note where the route becomes slow or stops responding. - Check network security devices or filters for handling of ICMPv6 “Packet Too Big” messages.
- Retest after any network-policy change, recording whether basic and large-packet behavior now match.
Do not treat a large-packet failure as proof that every IPv6 connection is broken. It describes a size-sensitive path condition that may affect only some transfers or destinations.

Testing on macOS and Linux
The commands above are Windows syntax. Do not copy ipconfig, ping -6, or tracert -6 into macOS or Linux and assume the same options or output. Use the network-configuration, IPv6 ping, and route-tracing tools provided by your operating system, and apply the same test design:
- Inspect the active physical interface, not a disconnected or virtual adapter.
- Confirm that the interface has IPv6 information and a usable default route.
- Use a browser test with an IPv6-only destination to verify application reachability.
- Force an IPv6 destination in the operating system’s ping tool when separating IPv6 from IPv4.
- Trace the IPv6 route when you need hop-by-hop evidence.
The important distinction is the address family being tested, not a particular command name. Keep the browser and operating-system results separate so a successful IPv4 fallback is not mistaken for IPv6 success.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Identify the active connection. On Windows, use
ipconfigandipconfig /alland select the connected Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter. - Check local evidence. Record the IPv6 address and default gateway shown for that adapter.
- Run the browser test. Compare IPv4-only, IPv6-only, dual-stack, and large-packet results.
- Force the address family. Run
ping -6 hostnameagainst a hostname with an AAAA record, or ping a known global IPv6 address directly. - Separate DNS from routing. If the address works but the name fails, investigate AAAA resolution and name selection.
- Trace the path. Use
tracert -6 hostnameon Windows when you need route and hop timing information. - Classify the failure. Missing local configuration, name-resolution failure, route failure, endpoint filtering, and packet-size problems require different fixes.
- Retest more than once when results conflict. Browser results depend on the network and browser at that moment, and individual endpoints may filter ICMP.
What a successful test does—and does not—prove
If an IPv6-only browser test succeeds, your browser reached that test destination over IPv6 at that time. If an IPv6-specific ping succeeds, that endpoint returned an ICMPv6 echo reply. If a trace shows responding hops, those hops provided route information for the probe. Together, these are strong evidence that IPv6 is usable from the device to the tested destinations.
None of those results guarantees universal IPv6 support. Different sites publish different DNS records, apply different filtering rules, and follow different network paths. Keep the scope attached to every conclusion: say that IPv6 reached the tested destination, that the tested hostname resolved to IPv6, or that the observed route responded. That precision prevents a passing check from hiding a problem that affects another application.
