Wrapping a phone in aluminum foil can interrupt its radio reception. In a University of Iowa classroom demonstration, a foil-wrapped phone did not receive a test call—but the result depends on how the phone is wrapped, and it does not prove that every signal or phone function will be blocked.
What foil does to a phone’s signal
Phones use radiofrequency (RF) signals to communicate. A conductive enclosure can interfere with those signals, and the University of Iowa describes a demonstration in which a phone wrapped in foil did not receive a call. The demonstration reports a call result only. It does not establish what happens to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, or every cellular band, and it does not specify a universal number of foil layers or a measured signal-loss value.

Why the wrapping method matters
The University of Iowa warns that foil touching the phone may act like an extension of its antenna rather than simply blocking reception. For its demonstration, the university recommends placing the phone in a plastic or insulated bag before covering it with foil. The outcome can therefore vary with the wrapping, gaps, phone, and surrounding conditions.

How to try the classroom demonstration

Call the phone and confirm that it receives the call before wrapping it.

Put the phone in a plastic or insulated bag, as the University of Iowa recommends, so the foil does not touch it directly.

Wrap the bagged phone in aluminum foil and repeat the call.

Note whether the phone receives that call. This is a simple, qualitative demonstration—not a calibrated measurement of signal attenuation or a test of every radio connection.

Why a foil wrap is not a reliable isolation guarantee
Even purpose-made radio-isolation enclosures can fail. A U.S. government forensics guide identifies insufficient shielding, seams or other leaks, and the shield itself acting like an antenna as possible reasons a shielding product may still allow communication. If you need a device isolated from radio signals, do not assume that foil—or a pouch sold for shielding—will work for your particular phone and connections. Check whether the product is designed for the frequencies and signals you need to block, how its closure and seams are constructed, and whether the maker provides meaningful attenuation test data. The cited guide cautions that shielding products do not always prevent network communication.

Does wrapping a phone in foil protect your health?
No health benefit follows from the call-blocking demonstration. Blocking reception is a communications effect; it is not evidence that foil protects a person from RF exposure or health effects.
