A UPS should be tested with a controlled, repeatable load profile that reproduces the AI server’s real power steps—not merely with a steady full-load run. Measure the UPS through each transition and repeated cycle, including voltage, current, frequency, alarms, battery activity, bypass transfers, power quality and temperature. A UPS that survives a continuous 100% load test has not automatically demonstrated that it can regulate fast, repeated GPU-driven changes.
For high-power or production-critical systems, have the UPS manufacturer or a qualified service contractor design and supervise the test. Load-bank connections, isolation, bypass operation, heat management and lockout/tagout involve hazardous electrical energy and must follow the model-specific procedure.
What this test must prove
The question is not simply whether the UPS remains powered on. A useful test establishes whether the complete UPS installation can maintain acceptable output while the server load changes by a defined amount, at a defined speed, for a defined number of cycles.

Every result applies only to the UPS model, firmware, operating mode, source conditions, load configuration and profile that were tested. It is not a blanket certification for another UPS or a different AI server.
Why AI server loads require a dynamic test
GPU accelerators can move between relatively low activity and high power in milliseconds. Training, inference and batch workloads can therefore produce a changing electrical demand rather than a smooth, constant wattage. Vertiv describes AI power profiles that shift rapidly between levels and uses configurable simulators to reproduce those changes.
Three characteristics matter:
- Step magnitude: the difference between the low and high load, expressed in watts or as a percentage of UPS capacity.
- Transition time: how quickly the load rises or falls. A 100-millisecond transition stresses control loops differently from a change spread over several seconds.
- Repetition: how often the step repeats and how long the test continues. A UPS may tolerate one transition but heat up, discharge its battery or transfer to bypass after thousands of cycles.
A steady-state endurance test can still be useful for checking thermal capacity and regulation, but it does not replace a transient test that matches the server’s behavior.
Collect the system and workload data first
Document the UPS installation
Create a test record before applying artificial load. Include:
- Manufacturer, exact model, rating in kW and kVA, serial number and relevant firmware.
- Online, eco, double-conversion, parallel or other operating mode in use.
- Input voltage, phase configuration, frequency and upstream source arrangement.
- Battery state of charge, battery age or replacement status, and the normal recharge condition.
- Static-bypass arrangement, maintenance-bypass position and any load-sharing architecture.
- Connected rack, server, PDU and distribution equipment, including protection settings that could affect the result.
- Normal protected load and the amount of spare capacity available for the test.
Keep the exact configuration with the report. Changing firmware, battery strings, parallel modules or the upstream source can change the response.
Measure the real server demand
Use telemetry from the target rack or server wherever possible. Capture baseline demand, normal peak demand, the largest observed step, rise and fall timing, dwell time at each level and repetition rate. Include GPU-vendor load curves or site measurements when available.
Schneider Electric/APC guidance recommends collecting typical steady-state draw, maximum inrush current, maximum inrush duration and the make and model of connected equipment when evaluating a load. Inrush is not identical to an AI workload step, but it can expose a separate limitation in rectifiers, PDUs or upstream protection and should be documented rather than assumed away.

Choose a safe, representative load source
AI load simulator
A purpose-built AI load simulator is the most repeatable option when validating fast, recurring changes. Vertiv describes a simulator that accepts configurable two- and three-step profiles, application-specific curves and actual GPU-vendor curves. Its service description says the same approach can be used to test a UPS, PDU or the complete power-distribution path.
Use a simulator when you need precise timing, repeatable runs or a comparison between UPS models. Confirm its voltage, phase, kW and kVA limits before planning the test.
Professional load bank
A load bank provides artificial electrical demand without using production servers. It is specialized electrical test equipment, not a casual plug-in appliance. The selected unit must match the UPS voltage, phase, connector, frequency and required real or apparent power.
Load banks produce substantial heat. Before connection, verify that the facility can carry both the protected load and the test load, determine where the heat will go, and obtain site approval. Eaton’s documented UPS performance-testing scope requires infrastructure verification, a certified electrician to connect the load bank and lockout/tagout where applicable.

Testing with live AI servers can provide the most realistic waveform, but it is harder to control and carries operational risk. Only use it under an approved change plan with a safe rollback, redundant capacity and a way to stop the workload without leaving the UPS in an unknown state. If the workload cannot reproduce the same profile on demand, use a simulator or load bank for acceptance testing and use production telemetry to validate the profile afterward.
| Load source | Strength | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| AI load simulator | Precise timing, repeatable cycles and configurable curves | Requires specialized equipment and correct electrical integration |
| Professional load bank | Artificial load protects production servers and supports staged loading | Requires qualified connection, facility capacity and heat dissipation |
| Live AI workload | Most representative of the actual server and rack | Less repeatable and introduces continuity and change-management risk |
Build the dynamic test profile
Start with the measured low and high demand of the target workload. Specify the load level, transition time, dwell time, repetition rate and total duration. Do not deliberately exceed the UPS rating unless an approved engineering plan specifically addresses overload behavior.
Vertiv’s 2025 article gives three example profiles. They illustrate different stresses; they are not universal acceptance recipes:

| Profile | Cycle timing | What it observes | Published duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-frequency cycling | 100 ms on / 30 ms off, 8.3 Hz | Rapid, high-stress repeated transitions | Four hours in Vertiv’s example |
| Balanced cycling | 500 ms on / 500 ms off, 1 Hz | Allows the DC bus to approach a steady state between transitions | Four hours in Vertiv’s example |
| Longer recovery interval | 100 ms on / 900 ms off, 1 Hz | Repeated steps with more time for the DC bus to settle | Four hours in Vertiv’s example |
These timings are test-program examples from one manufacturer. Substitute the actual AI workload’s curve when one is available, and obtain the UPS manufacturer’s approval for the chosen levels and duration.

1. Establish a baseline
- Confirm the UPS is in the intended operating mode and that batteries, bypass paths and alarms are normal.
- Record input and output voltage, current, frequency, real power and apparent power at the normal protected load.
- Note ambient temperature, UPS cabinet temperature, battery temperature where available and the starting battery state of charge.
- Verify that monitoring logs are synchronized to a reliable time source so a brief event can be matched to the load step.
2. Install measurement equipment
Use the UPS’s native logs and a suitably rated power-quality recorder or data-acquisition system. Place measurements so that a problem can be located: UPS input, UPS output and, when practical, the rack or PDU feeding the tested equipment.
If the UPS exposes DC-bus voltage or current, record it. DC-bus behavior can reveal control or energy-storage stress that is not visible in a slow output trend. Do not open energized equipment or attach probes unless the manufacturer’s procedure explicitly permits it.
3. Complete safety and continuity checks
- Obtain written approval from the facility owner and affected service teams.
- Verify that upstream breakers, conductors, generators and distribution equipment can carry the protected load plus the artificial load.
- Plan ventilation and heat removal for the load bank.
- Confirm the intended bypass, isolation and emergency-stop sequence with the UPS service provider.
- Use a certified electrician for load-bank connection and apply lockout/tagout where the procedure requires it.
- Define who can stop the test and how the protected load will remain supplied if the test equipment fails.
4. Apply load in controlled increments
Begin below the final high level and increase in agreed increments while watching input current, output regulation, alarms and thermal readings. This staged approach can reveal an unexpected limit before the complete profile is applied. Allow the system to stabilize at each level for the interval specified in the test plan.
5. Run the repeated profile
Apply the selected on/off or multi-step curve for the approved duration. Capture every transition, not a one-second average that could hide a short excursion. Record the exact start and stop time, load level, repetition rate, UPS mode, alarms, battery current and any bypass event.

6. Add a separate endurance check when required
A dynamic test and a thermal endurance test answer different questions. Eaton’s 2015 scope of work describes one procedure using 50% load for one hour followed by 100% load for three hours, then battery-discharge and transfer checks. Those timings belong to that documented scope and are not a universal standard. Use the UPS manufacturer’s procedure for any endurance, battery or transfer test.
7. Inspect and document the result
After the final cycle, inspect the UPS, connections and load bank for abnormal heat, smell, discoloration, fan behavior or mechanical noise. Eaton’s example includes infrared inspection for hotspots, output harmonic measurements and a written report. Save raw waveforms and event logs rather than retaining only a pass/fail sentence.

What to measure during the test
| Measurement | Why it matters | Record with it |
|---|---|---|
| UPS input voltage and current | Shows source stress and whether the upstream supply remains within the planned condition | Phase, frequency and source mode |
| UPS output voltage and current | Shows regulation during each load transition | Time scale fast enough to capture the step |
| Output frequency | Reveals control-loop or source interaction during rapid changes | Any frequency alarm or transfer |
| Real and apparent power | Distinguishes kW demand from kVA and power-factor effects | Load level and phase balance |
| DC-bus voltage/current, if exposed | Shows internal energy-storage response | Battery current and state of charge |
| UPS mode and alarms | Identifies regulation limits, overload warnings or unexpected operating changes | Exact timestamp and alarm text |
| Bypass and battery activity | Shows whether the UPS needed stored energy or a different power path | Duration and trigger condition |
| Harmonics and waveform | Identifies power-quality changes that a basic wattmeter misses | Measurement location and instrument settings |
| Temperature and infrared images | Finds connections or components heating under repeated stress | Ambient conditions and image time |
Set pass criteria before applying the load
Write the acceptance limits before the test begins so the result is not judged after the fact. The limits should come from the UPS manual, the site electrical design and the equipment owner. Define:
- Permitted output-voltage and frequency excursion during a step.
- Maximum recovery time after the transition.
- Whether any battery discharge is acceptable and, if so, for how long.
- Whether a bypass transfer or alarm is allowed.
- Maximum temperature and thermal-rise limits for cabinets, cables, plugs and distribution equipment.
- Required number of cycles and total duration.
- Maximum acceptable harmonic or waveform change.
- Conditions that require an immediate abort.
Do not substitute “the servers did not reboot” for these criteria. A server can remain online while the UPS output briefly violates the limits needed by another device or while a connection develops a dangerous hotspot.

How to interpret published UPS results
Vertiv reports that its EXL S1, Trinergy and PowerUPS 9000 systems handled the described dynamic steps from 0% to 100% of rated capacity without battery involvement when utility input remained within nominal parameters. That is evidence for those named systems, profiles and source conditions. It does not certify another model, a different firmware version or overload above 100%.
“The tests confirmed that Vertiv Large Power UPS systems (Vertiv EXL S1, Vertiv Trinergy and Vertiv PowerUPS 9000) are capable of handling highly dynamic AI load steps from 0% to 100% of their rated capacity without involving the battery, provided the utility source remains within nominal parameters.”
Vertiv also identifies overload transients and profiles temporarily above 100% as subjects of further firmware work in that article. Treat any claim about above-rating operation as a separate engineering question requiring an approved overload test.
When reviewing a vendor report, check whether it identifies the exact model, firmware, load profile, utility condition, operating mode, measurement method, duration and pass criteria. A headline such as “AI-ready” is not a substitute for those details.
Troubleshoot an unsuccessful or ambiguous test
Output voltage or frequency moves outside the limit
Stop escalating the load. Confirm that the instrument is correctly connected and time-aligned, then check source voltage, phase balance, operating mode and the actual step timing. Repeat only after the UPS manufacturer has reviewed the waveform; changing the profile without understanding the cause can conceal the problem.

The UPS uses the battery during a nominal utility test
Check whether the utility input briefly left its nominal window, whether an input-protection threshold was crossed, or whether a bypass or rectifier event occurred at the same instant. Verify battery state and charger status before another run. A battery event is a result to investigate, not automatically a failure if the approved criteria permit it.
A bypass transfer or overload alarm occurs
Compare the measured kW and kVA with the UPS rating and phase limits, including crest factor and power factor. Confirm that parallel modules share load as designed. Do not continue cycling after an unexplained transfer; obtain the model-specific service procedure.
Temperature rises across repeated cycles
Check airflow, filter condition, cable terminations, load-bank ventilation and ambient temperature. Use infrared inspection to distinguish a general cabinet rise from a localized connection hotspot. A test that passes electrically but exceeds the site’s thermal limit is not acceptable.
The test cannot be repeated
Capture the simulator settings, load-bank configuration, server workload, firmware, source conditions and timestamps. Differences in GPU scheduling, battery state, utility voltage or parallel-module availability can change the result. Re-run only after those variables are controlled or explicitly documented.
How to compare UPS tests fairly
Use the same measured workload profile and the same reporting fields for every model under consideration. Compare:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Capacity | What are the continuous kW and kVA ratings, and how do they compare with the tested connected load? |
| Dynamic demand | What step size, rise/fall time, repetition rate and duration were actually tested? |
| Output behavior | What voltage, frequency, waveform and harmonic limits were measured? |
| Energy path | Did the UPS use batteries, transfer to bypass or raise an alarm? |
| Source and mode | Was utility input nominal, and was the UPS in the same operating mode used at the site? |
| Thermal response | Were cabinet, cable and connection temperatures inspected throughout the run? |
| Evidence scope | Does the report identify model, firmware, profile, instruments, criteria and conditions? |
A vendor-published test can be technically useful while still being limited in scope. No independent cross-manufacturer performance comparison or population statistic establishes that all UPS systems respond alike to AI load spikes.
What a complete test report should contain
- Test date, site, personnel and approval reference.
- UPS model, rating, firmware, battery condition, operating mode and source configuration.
- Connected production load and artificial-load equipment, including electrical ratings.
- Profile definition: low and high levels, step timing, dwell time, repetition rate and duration.
- Instrument models, locations, sampling or logging settings and calibration status.
- Baseline, transition and post-test voltage, current, frequency, power-quality and thermal data.
- Alarm, battery, bypass and emergency-stop event logs.
- Infrared images or other inspection records where used.
- Pass criteria, deviations, aborts, corrective actions and the engineer’s conclusion.
Keep the raw files with the report. If the AI workload, UPS firmware, battery set or facility source changes materially, treat the old result as historical evidence and schedule a new validation.
