Test a Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) integration in the Merchant Center sandbox before requesting production review, and choose the test flow that matches the capability you actually implement. A cart-transfer integration is validated around cart creation and transfer to the merchant’s site; native checkout is validated around checkout-session creation, updates and completion on Google. Identity linking is an optional native-checkout capability, not a substitute for checkout validation.
The most important debugging distinction is the error class. Malformed requests, failed authentication and unavailable services are protocol or server failures and use normal HTTP status codes. Stock, payment, fraud and other business outcomes are returned as HTTP 200 with a structured UCP messages array, canonical error codes and a required severity. Use the schema for the UCP version declared by the integration: Google’s January 23, 2026 and April 8, 2026 native-checkout examples differ in their unrecoverable session-creation response.
Choose the UCP checkout path before you test
Merchant Center does not use one universal validation script. The integration workflow branches according to the capabilities selected for the merchant account. Decide this first, then test only the operations and production checklist that belong to that path.
| Capability | Where checkout completes | Primary interfaces to test | Distinct requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer to merchant cart | On the merchant’s own checkout after Google transfers the cart | Cart creation and, when supported, cart retrieval, updates and cancellation | Cart API behavior, matching product-ID configuration and the cart-transfer validation checklist |
| Native checkout on Google | Inside Google’s checkout experience | Checkout-session creation, updates such as shipping information, and completion | Native checkout endpoints, order status and webhook configuration, and the native-checkout validation checklist |
| Identity linking | Associated with native checkout | The identity-linking flow selected in Merchant Center | Optional capability-specific validation and the merchant’s account configuration |
If a merchant supports both cart transfer and native checkout, treat them as two test tracks. The published UCP profile, selected Merchant Center capabilities and credentials must describe the same implementation. A profile that declares one path while the account is being validated for another creates confusing failures before a transaction is attempted.

Prepare accounts, profiles and credentials
Separate sandbox from production
Keep staging or sandbox credentials separate from production keys. The integration workflow asks for separate keys for each environment; never use a production secret while diagnosing a sandbox discovery failure. Record which profile URL, API key or OAuth bearer token belongs to each environment so a failed test can be reproduced.
Confirm access and market availability
Verify that the Merchant Center account can open the UCP integration hub and that the selected capability is currently enabled for the target account and market. Google describes the rollout as gradual, and the integration-hub scope covers products sold within the United States. Availability can therefore differ by account, feature and geography; confirm the live Merchant Center UI rather than assuming that documentation means the feature is enabled for every account.
Deploy the merchant profile
Host a publicly reachable HTTPS UCP profile at the merchant’s exact /.well-known/ucp location. It must return valid JSON and declare the capabilities that will be validated. Check the production URL from a network that is not logged in to the merchant’s infrastructure; authentication walls, IP allowlists, redirects that end on an HTML page, invalid certificates or malformed JSON can all prevent discovery.

Assemble service-provider components
If a service provider is integrating merchants, prepare more than checkout endpoints. The setup also calls for order-lifecycle webhooks, the hosted merchant profile and a way to handle service proposals: either a redirect callback or ACCOUNT_SERVICE_CHANGE notifications. These pieces are part of the integration surface and should be deployed before end-to-end sandbox testing.
Run the Merchant Center sandbox workflow
1. Select the capability and environment
- Open the UCP integration workflow in Merchant Center.
- Select transfer to merchant cart, native checkout on Google, identity linking or the combination that the merchant will publish.
- Choose the sandbox or staging environment and provide its profile location and test credentials. Keep production keys for the later production-validation step.
- Confirm that the account, market and selected capability are supported and that any required enablement has been completed.
Do not begin by sending arbitrary requests to an endpoint. The sandbox uses the declared profile and credentials to determine which operations are available, so an incorrect capability selection can look like an API defect.

2. Check profile discovery and authentication
- Enter the profile URL that resolves to the merchant’s public
/.well-known/ucpresource. - Supply the applicable test API key or OAuth bearer token in the sandbox form.
- Verify that the response is valid JSON, is served over HTTPS and contains the capability declarations expected for this test.
- Confirm that credentials are accepted without exposing secrets in logs, profile content or returned error messages.
When discovery fails, test the URL exactly as entered. A path such as /.well-known/ucp/ can behave differently from the configured resource, and a redirect may return a document that is not the UCP profile. Compare the profile’s declared capabilities with the options selected in Merchant Center before changing application code.
3. Exercise cart-transfer operations
For transfer to merchant cart, start with cart creation. Where the implementation declares support, continue with retrieval, updates and cancellation. Use test products that cover normal availability, quantity limits and a changed total so that both successful and business-error responses are exercised.

- Retrieve the cart if the capability is declared, checking that identifiers and line-item state are stable.
- Update quantity, shipping or other supported cart fields, then verify that the response reflects the requested state or returns a canonical business message.
- Cancel the cart and confirm that subsequent operations receive the documented unavailable or cancelled state rather than silently creating a new cart.
The goal is not merely an HTTP success. Check that product IDs match the configuration used by Merchant Center, totals are internally consistent and each state transition can be correlated with the request that caused it.
4. Exercise native-checkout operations
Native checkout simulations cover session creation, updates and completion. An update commonly includes shipping information, but test every update operation that the profile declares.
- Create a checkout session with a valid cart, customer context and payment test data required by the sandbox.
- Update the session with shipping information and any other supported fields. Verify recalculated shipping charges, tax or totals according to the response contract.
- Complete the session using the sandbox payment path. Confirm that the response contains the expected order or completion state.
- Repeat with controlled business outcomes such as an unavailable item, an invalid quantity limit or a payment decline. These should exercise structured UCP messages rather than transport failures.
Keep the session identifier and request correlation data for every step. A session-creation failure may not have a checkout session ID at all; do not build a recovery routine that assumes the identifier is always present.

5. Add service-provider end-to-end transactions
Service-provider sandbox testing adds end-to-end transactions that verify payload validation, error responses and webhook acknowledgements. After a checkout or cart operation succeeds, wait for the order-lifecycle event, process it, return the required acknowledgement and verify that the merchant or provider’s order state changes. A checkout that completes while its order remains stuck is not production-ready.

Classify every response before changing code
Protocol and server failures
Use standard HTTP status codes for malformed requests, authentication failures, authorization problems, unavailable servers and other transport or protocol conditions. These failures mean Google could not process the request as a valid protocol exchange. Inspect the HTTP status, headers and protocol-level details first; do not disguise a parser or authentication failure as an item-level business message.
Business errors and warnings
Business outcomes are returned with HTTP 200 and a structured messages array. Each message should identify the canonical code, message type, human-readable content and required severity. Include a path when it identifies the affected request or response field. Payment declines, fraud rejections, stock changes and quantity rules belong in this structure even when the shopper cannot complete checkout.
Google warns that an unrecognized error code causes the Google UI to fall back to a generic “something went wrong” message. Do not invent a catch-all code such as invalid. Select the published canonical code whose meaning matches the condition and preserve the documented recoverability and severity.
| Business condition | Example canonical code | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Item has no available inventory | out_of_stock |
Availability was checked for the requested product and the message explains the affected item without personal data. |
| Item cannot be purchased in the current context | item_unavailable |
The product or offer is unavailable for the transaction, not merely temporarily out of stock. |
| Item fails eligibility rules | item_ineligible |
The response identifies the eligibility failure and uses the severity specified for that outcome. |
| Requested quantity exceeds a limit | quantity_invalid_limit_exceeded |
The response points to the quantity field where relevant and states the applicable limit. |
| Requested quantity is below a minimum | quantity_invalid_minimum_not_met |
The minimum rule is applied consistently for create and update operations. |
| Server-side recalculation changed the amount | totals_changed |
The returned totals are authoritative and the shopper can review the changed amount. |
Protect customer data in errors
Do not include personally identifiable information (PII) or sensitive personally identifiable information (SPII) in UCP error responses. Log a private correlation identifier on your side, but keep names, addresses, payment details, authentication tokens and other sensitive values out of the message content returned to Google.

Match the response schema to the declared UCP version
Never copy an error example from a different implementation-guide revision without checking the version declared by the request and profile. Google’s native-checkout guide dated January 23, 2026 illustrates an unrecoverable session-creation failure with no checkout session ID and an unrecoverable message severity. The April 8, 2026 guide adds ucp.status: "error" to its illustrated response. Those details are not interchangeable merely because both examples describe an unrecoverable failure.
- Read the UCP version in the incoming request and the published profile.
- Open the native-checkout or cart-transfer implementation guide for that exact version.
- Copy the response structure, required fields and severity semantics from that version only.
- Run a sandbox test for a recoverable business error and an unrecoverable creation failure.
- Keep versioned fixtures in automated tests so a documentation or schema upgrade produces an intentional code change instead of a silent regression.
If one version accepts a response while another rejects it, compare the envelope and required status fields before investigating business logic. A structurally valid message with the wrong version can fail before the underlying stock, payment or fraud rule is evaluated.
Complete the production validation checklist
Native checkout on Google
- Configure the merchant account for native checkout and confirm the selected account settings.
- Publish the HTTPS UCP profile location and verify that its declarations match the native-checkout capability.
- Complete native checkout endpoint validation for session creation, updates and completion.
- Run identity-linking validation if the merchant selected that optional capability.
- Configure order-status and order-lifecycle webhooks, then verify acknowledgements.
- Agree to the UCP Program Addendum when prompted by the Merchant Center flow.
- Submit the completed validation for Google review.
Transfer to merchant cart
- Configure the merchant’s cart-transfer capability and publish the matching profile declaration.
- Confirm that product-ID configuration in Merchant Center matches the IDs accepted by the Cart API.
- Complete Cart API validation for creation and every additional operation the profile supports.
- Test changed totals, unavailable items and cancellation before requesting review.
- Submit the cart-transfer checklist for Google’s review.
If both capabilities are implemented, complete both capability-specific checklists. Passing cart validation does not prove that native-checkout sessions, identity linking or native order webhooks work.

Fix common Merchant Center integration failures
Sandbox cannot discover the implementation
- Open the exact profile URL and confirm the
/.well-known/ucpresource is publicly reachable over HTTPS. - Check the certificate chain, redirect destination, HTTP response and JSON syntax.
- Compare declared capabilities with the capability selected in Merchant Center.
- Confirm that the sandbox key or OAuth bearer token belongs to the same environment as the profile.
- For a service provider, verify that the merchant test account and enablement request are complete.
Google shows “something went wrong” for a known business condition
Inspect the returned message code. Replace a generic or unrecognized value with the canonical code from Google’s error table, such as out_of_stock, item_ineligible or the applicable quantity code. Keep the response at HTTP 200 when the request was valid and the outcome is a business rule. The UI can only present a useful recovery message when it recognizes the code.
A stock or payment rule is sent as HTTP 4xx or 5xx
Separate the application decision from the transport result. An unavailable item, payment decline or fraud rejection is a business outcome and should be represented in the structured messages array with HTTP 200. Reserve 4xx and 5xx responses for malformed, unauthenticated, unauthorized or unavailable protocol exchanges.
A copied example works in one environment but fails in another
Compare the declared UCP version and the matching implementation guide. In particular, check whether the response requires ucp.status: "error", whether a checkout session ID is allowed or required, and which severity value describes an unrecoverable condition.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Checkout completes but order state does not update
- Confirm that the order-lifecycle webhook URL is deployed and publicly reachable.
- Inspect the provider’s webhook acknowledgement for status and timing requirements.
- Correlate the completion response with the order event and verify that duplicate delivery is handled safely.
- Run the service-provider end-to-end sandbox transaction again and inspect payload validation and acknowledgement logs together.
The production checklist does not match the implementation
Compare three things side by side: the capability selected in Merchant Center, the capability declared in the profile and the endpoints actually deployed. If the merchant supports native checkout and cart transfer, complete both checklists. If identity linking is selected, include its validation rather than assuming native checkout alone covers it.
Testing is blocked before the first transaction
Check service-provider enablement, Merchant API registration, test-account setup, deployed profile, endpoints, webhooks and handshake handling. The sandbox UI and advanced checkout-management services may require explicit Google enablement; an unavailable test surface is an access prerequisite problem, not evidence that a checkout request is malformed.
Use a release gate that mirrors production
Before requesting review, keep a written matrix of capability, environment, profile version, credentials, operations tested and expected outcomes. For each operation, retain the request identifier, HTTP status, canonical message code when applicable, severity and webhook acknowledgement. This makes it possible to distinguish a schema regression from a changed inventory rule without recording customer data.
Re-run the matrix whenever the profile’s capabilities, product-ID mapping, checkout endpoints, webhook handlers or UCP version changes. Recheck Merchant Center rollout and market availability before launch because account access and supported geography can change independently of application code. Google’s Content API for Shopping sunset is dated August 18, 2026, and UCP account-integration additions have limited access noted for August 2026; ensure the implementation follows the currently supported Merchant Center and UCP surfaces rather than an older integration path.
A UCP checkout is ready when the selected capability can be discovered from the public profile, sandbox operations produce version-correct responses, business outcomes use canonical HTTP-200 messages, protocol failures use appropriate HTTP statuses, order webhooks acknowledge and update state, and the exact Merchant Center production checklist is complete.
